Chapter 3: Run or Fight

I stared at the dead guardian lying at my feet. Its blood still felt warm on my hands. The new numbers in front of my eyes made me feel different, sharper, like I could do more than I ever thought possible. But the voices coming closer told me I had no time to celebrate.

"Spread out! The guardian’s scent is fresh!"

"Find whoever did this!"

Torchlight danced on the tunnel walls. I counted at least fifteen men. Most carried swords or axes. A few had crossbows. These were not simple scavengers like the three I killed earlier. They looked organized, like a real team hired by some rich merchant or minor noble.

My heart raced. Running deeper into the ruins might lead me into worse trouble, but staying here meant facing all of them at once. The System words waited patiently.

New quest available: Escape the hunters or face them.

Reward: Hidden primordial shard.

I took a deep breath and made my choice. I turned and ran down the dark path ahead. My legs moved faster than before. Each step felt light, almost easy. The new agility from leveling up helped me dodge fallen stones and jump over cracks in the ground.

Shouts echoed behind me.

"He’s running! After him!"

A crossbow bolt whistled past my ear and shattered against the wall. I pushed harder. The tunnel twisted and turned. I followed the faint glow of the black stone in my hand. It seemed to pull me forward, like it knew the way.

The path opened into a large chamber. Moonlight came through cracks in the ceiling high above. Broken pillars stood like silent guards. In the center of the room sat a small stone pedestal. On top of it rested a glowing shard, no bigger than my thumb. It pulsed with the same red light as the relic I carried.

The System spoke again.

Hidden primordial shard detected. Claim it to unlock further growth.

I ran straight for it. My fingers closed around the shard just as the first hunters burst into the chamber.

"There he is!"

I spun around. Five men charged at me with weapons raised. The rest were right behind them. I had no place to hide.

The hunger from the System rose again, stronger than before. It whispered that I could take them. That I should take them.

I gripped the shard tight. Warm power flowed into my arm and spread through my body. My muscles tightened. My skin felt harder, like the scales I had just absorbed.

The first man swung his sword at my head. I raised my arm. The blade bounced off with a loud clang. No cut, no pain. Only a small scratch that healed almost instantly.

Scale Armor activated.

The man’s eyes widened in shock. I punched him in the chest. He flew back and crashed into two others. All three went down in a heap.

More men came. I moved between them like water. My fists broke bones. My kicks sent men sliding across the stone floor. Each time I landed a hit, the System took a little more essence.

Strength +1

Vitality +1

I felt myself getting stronger with every second. But there were too many. A heavy axe caught me in the side. Pain flared hot and sharp. I staggered but did not fall.

Blood ran down my ribs. The leader of the hunters, a tall man with a thick beard, pointed his sword at me.

"Give us the relic and the shard, boy, and we might let you die quick."

I wiped blood from my mouth and smiled. Something inside me had changed. The old Zephyr who ran from trouble was gone. The new one wanted to see how far this power could go.

I stepped forward.

Before I could attack, the ground under us shook hard. Cracks spread across the chamber floor. Ancient stones groaned and shifted. A deep voice, much older than the System’s, boomed from below.

Who dares disturb the slumber of Nethralis?

The hunters froze. Some looked ready to run. The tall leader shouted orders, but fear showed in his eyes.

I looked down. The cracks glowed with the same red light as my relic. Something huge was waking up beneath us.

The System words appeared, calm and cold.

Boss entity awakening. Level 15 threat.

Recommendation: Survive or grow stronger.

The floor exploded upward in a shower of stone and dust. A massive claw, bigger than any man, reached out and grabbed the nearest hunter. His scream cut off fast.

Chaos broke out. Hunters scattered in every direction. Some ran back the way they came. Others turned their weapons toward the hole in the floor.

I stood in the middle of it all, the shard and the black relic both pulsing in my hands. The huge claw pulled back, dragging more stones with it. Two glowing eyes, far bigger and brighter than the guardian’s, opened in the darkness below.

They looked straight at me.

My body screamed to run, but the System hunger pushed me to stay. To fight. To devour.

The massive creature roared, and the entire chamber began to collapse.

I had only one thought as I braced myself.

This was going to hurt.

Chapter 28: The Trial of Echoes Dawn broke cold and gray over the village. The sky was heavy with clouds that promised snow. I stood outside Elder Thorne's hut, watching the village wake. Lira joined me, her face pale but determined. "Today is the day," she said. I nodded. "The Trial of Echoes. Whatever that means." Elder Thorne emerged from his hut, dressed in ceremonial robes. Two other elders flanked him, carrying staffs topped with glowing crystals. The villagers gathered in the central square, their faces solemn. Even the children were quiet. Elder Thorne approached us. "The first trial begins now. The Trial of Echoes tests your mind — your ability to resist illusion, deception, and the voices of the past. Many have failed here, lost in their own memories." He handed me a small stone, similar to the ward he'd given us the night before, but larger and etched with more complex runes. "This will guide you. Follow the path it illuminates. Do not stray. Do not speak to anything

Chapter 27: The Village of EchoesThe night in the village was the first peaceful sleep we'd had in weeks. I woke to the smell of fresh bread and the sound of children laughing outside. Lira was already up, sitting by the window and watching the village come to life."They seem so… normal," she said when she noticed I was awake. "After everything we've been through, it's strange to see people just living their lives."I sat up and stretched. My body still ached from the Wraith fight, but the new Fear Resistance skill made me feel steadier.[Primordial System message: You have entered the domain of the Forgotten Mountains. The village is protected by ancient pacts. Violence here is forbidden.]I kept that to myself. No need to worry Lira.Elder Thorne knocked on the door and entered with his wife, carrying trays of food. Hot porridge, fresh eggs, and a strange blue fruit that tasted like honey and berries mixed together."Eat well," he said. "The trials begin at dawn tomorrow. You will

Chapter 26: The Whispering Pass The pass narrowed as we climbed. On both sides, steep cliffs rose like black teeth biting into the sky. The wind howled through the gaps, carrying whispers that sounded almost like voices. Lira shivered and pulled her cloak tighter around her. "Do you hear that?" she asked, her voice low. I nodded. The whispers were faint but constant. They seemed to come from the rocks themselves. [Primordial System message: The pass is protected by ancient wards. The whispers are echoes of past Anomalies who failed the trials ahead.] I kept the message to myself. No need to worry Lira more than she already was. The path twisted and turned. Sometimes it disappeared completely under loose scree, sometimes it became so narrow that we had to press our backs to the rock face and shuffle sideways. Every few steps, old runes glowed faintly on the cliffs, reacting to our presence. We stopped for a short rest on a flat ledge. Lira sat with her back against the rock, bre

Chapter 25: The Edge of the Wild The days blurred together as we pushed deeper into the Eldrath Forest. Each morning we woke early, ate whatever we could find or hunt, and kept moving toward the distant mountains the System pointed out in my mind. The trees grew taller and thicker, their branches forming a green roof that blocked most of the sunlight. The ground was soft with moss and fallen leaves, making our steps almost silent. Lira had grown stronger from the constant walking, but she still tired faster than I did. I carried her on my back for long stretches when her legs gave out. The new power from the Heart made my body feel tireless, but I was careful not to push too hard. The hunger was always there, whispering in the back of my mind, waiting for any excuse to break free. [Primordial System update: Distance to Forgotten Mountains reduced to 8 days. Essence density in the forest has increased. Stronger guardians expected.] The message appeared in its usual calm tone. I kep

Chapter 24: The Silent WatchThe fire had burned low by the time I woke Lira for her watch. The forest was quiet except for the soft rustle of leaves and the distant call of night birds. I lay down on the soft moss under the tree roots, but sleep did not come easily. The new power from the Heart still hummed in my veins, making every small sound sharper.[Primordial System update: Distance to Forgotten Mountains reduced to 10 days. Wild essence density increasing.]The message appeared clearly in my mind, calm and cold as always. I closed my eyes and tried to rest. The Hunger Suppression skill kept the constant whisper at bay, but I could still feel it there — waiting, patient, hungry.Lira sat with her back against the tree, dagger in her lap. She looked small in the darkness, but her eyes were alert. Every few minutes she glanced at me, as if checking that I was still the same person who had saved her in Valthor.Morning came too soon. Chapter 23: Whispers of the WildThe next morning came with a soft gray light filtering through the thick forest canopy. I woke up first, my body already feeling the pull to move. The new power from the Heart of the Primordial made everything sharper — sounds, smells, even the way the leaves moved in the breeze. Lira was still asleep, curled up against the cave wall with my cloak over her.I stepped outside the cave and looked around. The canyon we had crossed yesterday was far behind us now. The forest here felt older, wilder. Tall trees with thick trunks blocked most of the sky. Vines hung like curtains, and strange glowing flowers grew on the ground in small patches. The System gave a quiet update.Distance to Forgotten Mountains: 11 days.Warning: Wild essence detected in the area.
