Chapter 1: The Journey Begins

Chapter 1: The Journey Begins.

The scorching sun on a bright summer's day gradually begins to dim as a dark blue vehicle drives into a commercial building's quarters.

On it's sides were written Golden Delivery Service in an acronym GDS.

A young man alights from the vehicle with his eyes looking weary as he walked into the building, As his steps progress he meets a matured burly man seating behind a desk.

"Maxwell!" He thundered noticing his presence.

"Good evening Mr Nelson." Maxwell responded.

The tired young man was none other than Maxwell Wonderson a graduate from a grand varsity who now takes up a job as a struggling delivery driver due to lack of a good job.

"You were off on your usual and properly accurate delivery today especially with your stop at Wellington street. You spent more than an hour and you know that we work with time." Mr Nelson said in a stern manner.

"I'm so sorry sir this was due to heavy traffic." Maxwell responded.

"Do you think I care?" Mr Nelson inquired.

"The answer is absolutely no!" Mr Nelson thundered as he looked at him with utter disdain.

"All I want is for you to deliver properly without wasting time and I don't care how you get there. All I want is your deliveries should be made on time." Mr Nelson added before signalling to him to get out of his office.

Maxwell didn't respond as he was already weary of this job that paid below minimum wage. He was doing this to try and make ends meet.

As Maxwell walked towards another part of the office to get his side bag he felt a familiar tap on his shoulder.

"Forget that sack of potatoes bro." The familiar voice uttered with nonchalance and disregard.

It was none other than his co-worker Gerald. He'd gradually grown to be become his friend and they'd bonded not just as friends but close brothers.

The relationship was indeed a strong one between friends who watched each other's backs.

"Well I'm already aware of that he's never too lazy to find anything to use as a verbal weapon against me." Maxwell responded to Gerald.

"Yeah upon all the work you've put in this month. He never considered you for the employee of the month position, simply because he doesn't actually value you. Let's just ignore him until we get out of this situation that we call a job." Gerald replied as he took his side bag with him.

Maxwell had hung his side bag and dropped the keys of the delivery vehicle on the table where all delivery drivers drop theirs.

Maxwell and Gerald left the GDS building as they walked home chatting and laughing to jokes that they where already used to.

When they reached a certain street they parted ways like the red sea in biblical terms and waved each other goodbye.

Maxwell journeyed towards an apartment building. He was met with a mixture of different aromas that invaded his olfactory receptors.

The aromas originated from a nearby Italian restaurant that was serving meals to it's customers.

His stomach churned for something it desperately needed.

'I haven't eaten today' Maxwell thought as his memory jerked back to life.

Maxwell hadn't eaten for the most part of the day he desperately needed to grab a bite to eat.

'Possibly there's something in the fridge.' He thought as he took the elevator of the building heading to his apartment.

He entered the family hallways as his cheap shoes clicked against the tiled floors, this clip clop sound continued until he arrived Infront of his apartment's door.

A creaky sound rang across the room announcing his presence as he entered his apartment.

He was greeted with the familiar feeling of loneliness.

"Home sweet home!" Maxwell uttered as he dropped his bag and dropped on the nearby bed.

After spending a few minutes romancing the bed he changed his clothing and walked into the kitchen as he grabbed the usual macaroni and cheese in a pack.

He put it in the microwave and waited until it was ready to be consumed and then he took it out of the microwave.

Maxwell devoured the meal like a predator that had just caught his prey.

Ding!

His phone gave out it's notification sound signalling that a message had entered.

Maxwell opened the phone and noticed it was none other than the love of his life Rayne.

The message read: Good evening Boo, I know you must have had a really hectic day at work but I'll like to remind you that my birthday is coming up. I'll really like a mind blowing surprise from you. I wish you all the best. My lovely boo..

Maxwell eyes beamed with excitement as his blood bubbled with joy.

The love of his life had just messaged him and this made him forget all the stress he'd been through in recent times.

Then the truth shattered his sprinting happiness he didn't have as much money to actually buy her a solid gift.

'My salary isn't even enough to afford me a decent place to live in and now I'll have to buy something expensive just to impress her.: Maxwell thought as he stroked his chin.

Maxwell decided to check for the prices of expensive rings online only to discover that one costed two thousand, five hundred dollars.

He current bank account had never even gathered that much in several months of working as a delivery driver for GDS under Nelson's iron fisted administration.

Rayne Williams came from the affluent Williams family and she had dated him for years now since their days in Royal University.

He felt truly connected to Rayne and he loved her deeply and promised to give her the best of the best.

Maxwell's mind raced towards a memory of a particular gift Gerald had given him of his Mother's diamond ring.

Something he'd tried to reject but Gerald gave it to him because of their close friendship.

Maxwell still remembered where he'd kept that ring still hidden it's in its tightly sealed black box.

He went in search for it and quickly brought it out from a small bag he'd hidden underneath his bed.

He'd finally gotten the perfect gift for Rayne.
