The night was quiet, but Katherine's mind was anything but quiet.

She sat alone on the roof of the guest quarters, her legs dangling over the edge, eyes tracing the silver lines of moonlight on the estate walls. A gust of wind brushed her face, cold enough to sting her eyes.

Or maybe that was just the guilt clawing its way back into her chest. She had made a mess of her mission, of her loyalty, of her feelings.

And of Sylvester.

He’d trusted her. Placed his wife under her protection. Yet here she was, answering to a man whose goal was to destroy everything Sylvester stood for. A man she didn’t even know, except for the fact that they shared a common goal.

Her fingers trembled as she typed a message on the encrypted device: “We need to talk. Urgently.”

She waited.

Minutes ticked by.

Then, finally, a reply blinked across the screen.

“Meet at the usual place. Come alone.”

“Come alone,” Katherine rolled her eyes and scoffed. “So typical.”

Katherine stared at the message, heart thumping

Katherine’s heels echoed through the quiet halls of Edrag’s underground compound, but even the sharpness of her steps couldn’t mask the unease tightening in her chest. No one liked her around here. As far as they were concerned, she was for the other side. It didn’t matter if she was a double agent.“Oh, look. It’s one of Sylvester’s,” a man sniggered to his peers as she passed by.She ignored them, barely even sparing a glance. She didn’t want to give them the pleasure of seeing her angry.Maybe…just maybe…when this was all over, she would pick out few of the most ill-behaved towards her…and she would end their lives. But right now, she was stuck in this maze that she had to push her way out of.“Where’s Edrag?” she asked as soon as she entered the lab.She was told he would be here, but there was no sign of him.“He’s in his office,” one of the scientists said. “You shouldn’t be here. You want to catch the disease?”She paused. “What disease?”The scientists exchanged glances befor

The flickering lights of the clinic hallway barely masked the tension in the air. Edrag dragged himself through the bleached looking hallway that looked like it sucked lives. Ironic, considering he was going in, trying to save his own.His breath came ragged, short. He clenched his fists as another wave of pain shot through his chest and down his spine. What was happening to him.He had a clue, but he didn’t want to think about it. He didn’t want it to be…his dear weapon. His plan to a blissful world of control.No.It couldn’t be that.It couldn’t be the bringer. He pushed through the final door at the end of the hall and entered a small, cold room that smelled faintly of antiseptic and burning herbs.Dr. Harlen didn’t look up at first. His gloved hands moved carefully over vials of strange, dark liquids. Only when he noticed the sound of strained breathing did he lift his head.“Edrag,” he said slowly, his tone neither surprised nor welcoming. “I was expecting you.”Edrag said n

The silence in the jeep had been a heavy blanket, smothering the usual banter between them. Geral and Otto, bless their pragmatic hearts, were already deep in the weeds of logistics – how to best safeguard the Rose of Life during transport, contingency plans for any further attacks. But Sylvester? His mind was a tangled mess of suspicion, each thought…every route his brain took, led to the end with him having to fight his way out.He hated it...distrust.It meant he couldn’t focus too much on the main task, and it slowed him down significantly. As the familiar gates of the base finally loomed into view, the shift in the atmosphere was noticeable. The air, usually buzzing with the low hum of activity felt twined with an invisible tension. It was subtle, almost imperceptible, but it prickled at his senses."Geral," he called out, his voice rougher than intended. He gestured his most trusted student away from Otto and the others, needing a private word before the weight of his suspi

Katherine knew better than to betray Sylvester outright. She loved him.Not the naïve, starry-eyed kind of love that came with teenage crushes or fleeting infatuations. Hers was raw, aged, soaked in admiration and longing, buried deep in places she'd never dare speak of. Sylvester had saved her more than once. He saved her from herself, from the world, from the chaos in her head. That kind of debt bred obsession. Devotion. But Emily?Katherine’s jaw clenched at just the thought of her name. Emily, with her soft voice and saintly aura. Emily, who looked at Sylvester like he was more than a man…like he was her all. Yet, there was a time she despised him.Katherine knew of those times.Sylvester deserved someone better than her. Not the wet, soggy noodle that she was. She was of no use to Sylvester, and Katherine could almost guarantee that if Sylvester was ever going to lose his life, it would be to save Emily.Women like that annoyed Katherine. They offered nothing but their weak,

The first step into the mountain path came with a gust of cold wind and an immediate jab of regret in Otto’s voice.“Whoever said adventure builds character clearly never had to hike up a cursed mountain,” he muttered, adjusting his pack for the third time in five minutes.Geral chuckled from up ahead. “What’s the matter? Missing your spa days already?”“Spa? Please,” Otto groaned. “Back at the base, I had a mattress. Do you know how rare that is out here? A real mattress. I was somebody.”Sylvester smirked but didn’t turn around. “Then why did you come?”Otto answered without missing a beat. “Because you asked. Doesn’t mean I can’t complain while doing it.”Even Hozert laughed at that, though he was usually the quietest among them. “Keep your eyes open while you whine. If the legends are true, the Rose of Life is somewhere on this mountain, hiding in plain sight. I doubt it'll bloom next to a welcome sign.”“Yeah, yeah,” Otto grumbled. “Magic rose, world-ending darkness, giant evil.

Sylvester returned to base just as the sun ducked behind the horizon, casting long shadows across the stone courtyard. His coat was dusted with dirt from travel, and his mind buzzed with urgency. There was no time to waste.By the time he stepped into the strategy room, Geral, Verity, and Otto were already waiting. They sat in a loose circle, their expressions tense but expectant. Katherine’s seat remained empty.“Anyone know where she is?” Sylvester asked, pointing to her seat, but he already had an inkling as to what the answer might be – something generic.Verity shook her head. “She left early this morning. Said something about personal errands. Didn’t say where.”Aha. Something generic.Sylvester’s jaw clenched for a second before he exhaled through his nose. “Then we move on without her.”He stepped into the middle of the room, letting his presence settle the room. His voice came out low, controlled.“I visited the old woman again. She’s dying… but before she goes, she told me
