CHAPTER 154

The ward was quiet as Nicholas and Gnits approached Mr. Philips' bedside. Nurses fluttered about, tending to monitors and checking his vitals, but they promptly scattered at Mr. Philips' dismissive wave of his hand.

"Leave us," he commanded, his voice raspy but firm.

The nurses exchanged bewildered glances but dutifully filed out of the room, their crisp white uniforms rustling as they went.

Nicholas felt a pang of pity for the old man. Mr. Philips looked frail, propped up against the pillows, his complexion sallow and his breathing labored.

But despite his fragile state, there was a resolute gleam in his eyes as he regarded them.

"Mr. Loughty. Mr. Gnits." Mr. Philips acknowledged them with a slight nod. "I'm glad you're here. You arrived earlier than I expected."

Nicholas offered a small smile as he drew closer to the bed. "How are you feeling, Mr Philips?"
