Chapter 7: The Iron Network

The morning sun finally shone through the Oakhaven fog casting long golden beams across the broken marble lobby of the Central Bank. The city was waking up. It was waking up to a completely new landscape.

While General Diana Vance’s soldiers in uniforms filtered into the building to secure the gold and process Silas Sterling, who was still in a daze, Logan didn't stay to enjoy the victory. By the time the media vans breached the military cordons, the black Vanguard breaching ram was gone, leaving nothing but crushed granite and the echo of a powerful shadow empire.

Back in the warehouse the hum of the servers felt different. It was no longer the buzz of a hunted resistance; it was the steady pulse of a dominant force.

Marcus was already at the terminal, a new bionic brace shining beneath his dark pants. When Logan walked in putting his armored helmet on the steel workbench Marcus didn't salute. Instead he tapped a key bringing up a digital network map that spanned far beyond Oakhaven Metro.

"The Directorate is in disarray now " Marcus said, sounding very satisfied. "Evelyn Thorne has taken control of the city’s intelligence grid. She’s signing arrest warrants for every executive who contributed to Julian Sterling’s shadow fund. By noon the old elite won't have money to buy a coffee let alone a politician."

Logan ran a hand through his hair, his gray eyes locked on the glowing holographic globe. "Oakhaven was a harbor, a safe port for their dirty money. Silas was terrified before I even hurt him. He mentioned the Supreme Council."

"He had every reason to be terrified, " Marcus said, looking grim. He swiped his hand across the air zooming the globe out to focus on a massive mountain range in the northern territories—Sector 0. "While you were getting Evelyn I ran a diagnostic on the encrypted data drives you took from Silas’s private vault. The frame-up five years ago? It wasn't a cover-up for arms-smuggling. It was a clearance operation."

Logan’s brow furrowed. "Explain."

"The Vanguard was getting too close to the border anomalies " Marcus explained, pulling up a series of satellite feeds. The images showed massive industrial complexes being drilled into the earth surrounded by energy shielding. "The Supreme Council isn't a political body, Logan. They are building infrastructure. Silas was funneling hardware and advanced tech to a shadow division known as The Iron Vanguard."

Logan’s jaw tightened. "They copied our names, our tactics and our research."

"And they’re using it to prepare for something " Marcus added, tapping a blinking red node on the map. "Silas’s final encrypted transmission wasn't to an ally. It was a distress signal sent directly to the commander of Sector 0. A man listed under a code name: The Architect."

Before Logan could analyze the file a chime cut through the warehouse's audio system. It wasn't an alarm. A private communication override.

The main monitor flickered, replacing the map with a live video feed from a secure military line.

General Diana Vance appeared on the screen. She was sitting in her command vehicle with the backdrop of Oakhaven's purge visible behind her. Her ice-blue eyes were fixed on the camera lens, her expression a mix of concern and duty.

"I know you can hear me, Logan, " Diana said, her voice heavy. "The Supreme Council has issued an emergency order. They have classified the events in Oakhaven as a rebellion. They are stripping my division of its authority. Sending in the First Warden Fleet to assume martial control of the province."

Logan stepped closer to the console, his voice flat. "They’re trying to bury the evidence before it reaches the capital."

"They're trying to bury you " Diana corrected sharply. "The First Warden Fleet doesn't take prisoners. Their commander, Lord Caleb has orders to destroy the sector if they detect any trace of Vanguard technology. Logan... You need to pull your people out. Oakhaven is no longer safe."

"I don't run from a fight with Aunt Diana, " Logan said softly. ". I won't leave my city to the wolves."

"Then you need to know what you're actually fighting, " Diana said, leaning forward, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Caleb isn't a commander. His flagship carries a prototype orbital strike weapon. If you deploy your armor or attempt another frontal breach he will destroy the city from the stratosphere. You can't fight a god from the ground, Logan."

The feed cut to static as a jammer hit the frequency.

Marcus stared at the screen, his fingers freezing over the keys. "Logan... She’s right. The Warden Fleet is a military asset. Our rifles can stop a humvee. They can't pierce an orbital dreadnought's hull shield."

Logan slowly picked up his helmet, the light of the monitors reflecting off the silver dragon emblem. He didn't look afraid. If anything the threat only sharpened his calculated lethality.

"We don't need to pierce their shield from the ground Ghost " Logan murmured, putting the helmet back on his voice shifting to a tone. "Activate the Aegis Oblivion satellite network. If the Supreme Council wants to bring the war to the sky we’ll meet them there."

He turned toward the weapon racks, where a sleek tactical uplink vest sat glowing with a light—the key to a powerful shadow arsenal the world had yet to witness.

The battle for Oakhaven Metro was over. The war for the sovereign sky had just begun.
