Chapter 19
"Impressive..." Victor's voice cut through the silence like a knife through silk. He began to clap, slow, deliberate, each impact of palm against palm echoing in the stillness. "Bravo. That was truly a spectacle." Isabella and Victor glared at each other across the wreckage of the room. Killing intent crackled between them like lightning seeking ground. Her eyes burned with anger and rage, hot, alive, desperate. His eyes were flat. Dull. Empty as a dried well. He looked at her like she was a painting he was considering buying. "If I don't get answers right this moment, then death will follow..." Layla's voice was soft. Too soft. The kind of softness that came before a storm broke everything apart. Her gold aura began to flare again, not bright this time, but deep, heavy, pressing against the air like a physical weight. The chandelier above her swayed though there was no wind. The floorboards groaned. Isabella stepped back, her body shaking uncontrollably. The aura wasn't directed at her, but it didn't need to be. It was everywhere, in everything, the rage of a mother who had realized her nest was full of serpents. "Fine, Mother..." Victor spread his hands in mock surrender, his smile never wavering. "Why don't we all take a seat?" He settled back onto the couch as if he owned it, as if the room wasn't splintered around him, as if assassins weren't bleeding on his mother's floor. The others followed, Ralph rigid with fury, Hilda stiff with dread, Isabella trembling with adrenaline still coursing through her veins. And so it began. Victor spoke. He explained everything from the start, the plots, the players, the invisible wars fought in shadowed halls and whispered contracts. He spoke with the precision of someone who had been there, who had watched from dark corners and taken notes, who had played every side against the middle and emerged smiling. "So that's the gist of it..." He leaned back, swirling the last drops of whiskey in his glass. "The game, the pieces, the board." "You missed a few details there..." Layla's voice was ice over steel. "What of the assassins placed under your rule?" "I'm afraid they don't belong to me either, Mother..." Victor's head turned toward the unconscious assassins, their porcelain masks cracked and bloody. His expression flickered, something almost like regret, there and gone before anyone could name it. "Like her, I was given the same offer." "And you agreed." Ralph's voice was barely recognizable, low and grinding, his face turned to shadow, his eyes lost in darkness. His fists clenched so tight the knuckles split, blood beading on his skin. He looked like a man holding himself together with fraying thread. "I'm afraid so..." Victor stood, walking to the sideboard where a crystal decanter of whiskey caught the light. He poured with steady hands, the amber liquid singing against the glass. "But not for the reason you believe." He threw back the drink in one motion. His throat worked. His eyes watered. "Argh... strong stuff." "You know... you are underage to be drinking," Isabella said, her voice hollow, automatic. The words of a person too shocked to process what was happening. "I'm afraid I am..." Victor reached into his pocket and withdrew a small card. He held it up between two fingers, letting the light catch the embossed seal. "I believe you know what this is." "That's an Adventurer's Guild card..." Ralph muttered. "Which means I'm legally permitted to drink. But that's not the point now." Victor pocketed the card, his smile fading into something harder. Something real. "The reason I agreed... is to destroy the High-Ups. As a whole. Every last one of them." Hilda's eyes widened until the whites showed all around. "You must be insane!!!" She shot to her feet, her chair scraping backward with a shriek. "There is no way you could ever do that!!! The High-Ups aren't easy to locate like any other person. Getting close to them would be like getting close to the King himself!!" "I'm aware." Victor's voice didn't rise. Didn't shake. "Just as I'm aware you were once a part of them." The words landed like a physical blow. Hilda froze, her body locked mid-gesture, her mouth still open around a scream that died in her throat. The color drained from her face until she looked like a corpse standing upright. "How... do you...?" "That's not the case right now." Victor turned away from her, dismissing her shock as easily as he'd dismissed the broken furniture. "What you should know is this, the things given to kill Nolan weren't items that would kill him right that instant. Am I wrong?" Isabella looked down at her hands. They were still stained with blood, her own?, her enemies'?, she couldn't tell anymore. Her eyes filled with regret so heavy it seemed to pull her toward the floor. "No..." she whispered. "Everything I was given to take him out would have killed him days later. After everything was confirmed. After he suffered." "Which leads me to a question..." Victor's eyes found hers, sharp and searching. "Why was it him they hunted?" "I think I've heard enough." Layla stood. Her movements were slow, controlled, the careful motions of someone containing an explosion. She had listened to every word, her face giving away nothing, her gold aura pulsing in time with her heartbeat. "I've heard everything that was said here, and everything that came out is just nonsense." She turned toward Victor, and for the first time, her mask cracked. Her eyes were wet, not with tears, but with something harder. Something that looked like grief. "As for you... you are a danger to your older brother. Starting from today, you are to distance yourself from him and his land until further notice." The words fell like a guillotine blade. Victor's smile didn't falter. But something in his eyes dimmed, just for a moment, just a flicker, before the mask slammed back into place. Layla turned toward Isabella. Her gaze was heavy enough to crush stone. "And as for you..." She paused, letting the silence stretch, letting Isabella feel every second of her life hanging by a thread. "If it weren't for the kindness my son showed you... you would have died a slow death by my hand. Any mistake you make toward my son... and you are a goner." She didn't wait for a response. She glanced at Hilda, one look, heavy with meaning, heavy with warning, then walked away without another word. Her footsteps echoed down the hall, each one a funeral bell. Silence followed. Heavy. Suffocating. Filled with the weight of things said and unsaid, of bridges burned and knives drawn. Ralph stood slowly, his movements stiff and mechanical. He walked to the couch where Nolan still slept, peaceful, innocent, oblivious to the storm that had raged around him. Gently, as if handling something precious and fragile, Ralph lifted the boy into his arms and headed upstairs without a word. His back was straight. His shoulders were bowed. Hilda remained in her chair, her body curled inward like a wounded animal. Tears fell from her face, silent, endless, dripping onto her clasped hands. She didn't wipe them away. Didn't try to hide them. She simply sat and let them fall, each one carrying years of secrets and shame. Isabella could do nothing but watch Ralph walk away, Nolan's head lolling against his shoulder. She wanted to call out. Wanted to explain. Wanted to beg for forgiveness she didn't deserve. But the words wouldn't come. Victor, alone among them, seemed untouched. He held his empty glass up to the light, turning it sl owly, watching the crystal fracture the chandelier's glow into a thousand rainbows. A full grin spread across his face, too wide, too bright, too wrong for the moment. But if anyone had looked closely, really looked, they might have seen the way his hand trembled against the glass. The way his smile didn't quite reach his eyes. The way he, too, was bleeding where no one could.Latest Chapter
The Hand of a God
Chapter 31. "What was that...?" One of Isabella's knights stared at the dimming light on the horizon, his sword hanging limp at his side, his face pale with awe. The golden radiance had faded to a faint glow, then to nothing, leaving behind only the memory of something impossible. Isabella smiled. It was small, tired, but real. She looked down from her perch in the tree and released a heavy breath, her shoulders dropping, the tension of the day finally leaving her muscles. "We rest here for the night." She jumped from the branch, landing silently on the moss below. "You all better get some rest." --- On the far end of the forest, Nolan collapsed. His body hit the ground like a puppet with its strings cut, his remaining arm flung out, his eyes rolling back. The purple flames had died. The wind had stilled. All that remained was a boy, broken and bleeding, who had given everything he had. "Master!" Xavier ran to him, sliding to his knees, his hands shaking as he checked f
Absolute Light
"Arrrggghhhhh!!!"Xavier's scream tore through the void, raw and broken, as electric shocks crawled over his body like living snakes. He fell to one knee, his head hanging low, his whole body convulsing. Around him, dozens of golden strings lay dead and dull on the black floor, their light extinguished, their magic spent."Another wrong string chosen..." The voice echoed through the darkness, dripping with mockery, with amusement, with the cruel patience of something that had watched mortals fail for centuries. "This sure is entertaining. Which one will you choose next? Another wrong string, or..."Without another thought, Xavier reached out and pulled another. It turned gray in his hand, the light dying before it could even flicker. His eyes widened, horror flooding his chest."Wrong yet again."Electricity surged through Xavier's body, ten times stronger than before. He screamed, his voice cracking, his eyes rolling back until only the whites showed. He collapsed to the ground, twit
The Burn and the Choice
'Chapter 29 The knight kept running, Nolan slung over his shoulder like a sack of grain. Blood soaked through the knight's armor, warm and sticky, painting his back in dark ribbons. Nolan's face was hidden in shadow, his eyes invisible, his body limp and silent. He had not spoken a word since they left the clearing, had not moved, had not breathed in any way that suggested consciousness. The knight ran on, branches whipping his face, roots threatening to trip him with every step. His lungs burned. His legs ached. But he did not stop. Could not stop. "Hey, you..." The voice came from behind him, low and dark and completely wrong. It did not sound like a wounded boy. It sounded like something that had crawled out of a grave and decided to keep walking. The knight paused mid-step, his eyes widening, his whole body freezing in place. "Ma... Master?" "Don't you think you've done enough running around for the day?" Nolan asked, his expression still hidden, his voice carrying an e
The Price of Survival
Chapter 28 The defense dragged on for over twenty minutes, each second stretching into eternity. Nolan stood alone in the offense, his magic tearing through the darkness, fire and wind and earth exploding from his palms in desperate bursts. Blood sprayed across the forest floor, black and red, painting the leaves in streaks of death. The lizards learned. They adapted. Their attention switched to him alone, abandoning the shielded knights to focus on the mage who burned their kin. They attacked in groups, coordinated, silent, shadows given fangs and claws. His men stepped in, defending him as much as they could, their swords flashing, their shields rising, their bodies becoming walls between their lord and the monsters."Give me your sword."Nolan didn't wait for permission. He snatched the blade from a knight's hand and stormed into the fray, his movements wild, reckless, driven by adrenaline and fear. He slaughtered lizard after lizard, steel meeting scales, magic meeting flesh. But

'Chapter 27 -"Young Master Nolan!!! Are you injured?!"One of the knights rushed over, his boots crunching through leaves, his face pale with worry. He reached out a hand, then stopped, his whole body freezing in place.Nolan slowly turned. His expression was dark and serious, his purple eyes glowing brighter than ever before, two burning embers in the shadow of the forest. He stared at the knight for a long moment, silent, assessing, seeing something the others couldn't.The knight took one step back. Blonde hair. Blue eyes. A silver piercing on his right ear catching the dim light. Young. Maybe seventeen. Scared but trying to hide it."I'm alright. Tell me... what's your name?" Nolan asked, his voice calm, cool, controlled."My name is Xavier, my lord." The knight gave a slight bow, his hand trembling at his side.Nolan's heart skipped a beat. His blood turned cold."It truly is him..." he thought, his mind reeling. "Why is he appearing so early in the book? And in this family's ho
The Shadow Looms
Chapter 26Hours passed at the far north, where Hilda and her army pushed deeper into the forest. They had cleared six stages of different beasts, each one more vicious than the last. Blood painted their armor in streaks of green, black, and crimson. Their swords dulled. Their shields cracked. But they kept moving."We stop here for now."Hilda stood at the edge of a small clearing, her eyes scanning the darkness between the trees. The forest ahead seemed to breathe, its branches swaying without wind, its roots trembling with something buried deep beneath the earth. Her men dropped to the ground, gasping, their bodies hitting the dirt with exhausted thuds."Thank the heavens above... I thought we were still going." One knight sprawled on his back, staring at the canopy, his chest heaving. Others relaxed against tree trunks, their armor clinking softly, their faces pale beneath the grime."Eat up and drink water. Tend the wounded. We head out in an hour's time." Hilda's voice was flat,
