Chapter 20

Morning light crept through the curtains, pale and gentle, touching Nolan's face like a mother's fingers. He woke slowly, stretching his arms above his head, a yawn cracking his jaw. But something felt wrong.

Something was missing.

"Hmm..." He sat up, blinking at the empty room. "Ralph should have been here by now. And Isabella with her tray, doing her maid duties, scolding me for sleeping in..."

He stared at the doorway, expecting any moment to hear footsteps, to see a shadow cross the threshold. But nothing came. Only silence, heavy and strange.

"Maybe I'm rushing them..." He swung his legs off the bed, sliding his feet into the soft shoes waiting nearby. "Let me take a shower, then see what happens after."

He walked to the bathroom, his bare feet silent against the cold floor.

---

A few hours later, Nolan returned with a towel wrapped around his waist, another draped over his head like a hood. Water dripped from his hair, tracing paths down his lean frame. He was not muscular, not bulky. His body was built like a blade, long and sharp, every muscle defined but compact. His shoulders were broad for his age, his waist narrow, his arms carrying the faint lines of new strength earned from battle. The scars he had collected, small and pink, stood out against his pale skin, proof that he was no longer the soft boy who had first arrived.

He stared at his bedroom once more.

Everything was left just the same. Untouched. His bedsheets lay rumpled where he had thrown them off. No one had made them. No one had been here at all.

A cold feeling settled in his stomach.

"Looks as though you've woken, my son."

Layla's voice came from the doorway, soft and kind, but carrying an edge he had never heard before.

Nolan turned. She stood straight and tall, her eyes glimmering in the morning light. But as he watched, she looked down, quickly wiping away a tear with the back of her hand before stepping inside.

"And what's going on now..." Nolan wondered, brushing the towel through his damp hair. His mind raced, searching for answers, finding only fear.

"Take a seat..." Layla moved to a chair by the table, which was covered in scattered pages and small potion bottles. Her movements were careful, controlled, the way someone moved when they were holding something fragile and dangerous.

Without a word, Nolan followed. He sat on the edge of the bed, his towel still clutched in his hands, his heart beginning to beat faster.

"Why did you save her?" Layla asked. Her voice shook, barely audible, her eyes fixed on her own hands as if they might betray her.

"Save her???" Nolan's confusion lasted only a heartbeat. "Well, I didn't just save her alone... I saved everyone who'd been captured by the goblins."

"Not what you did yesterday..." Layla finally looked up, and her eyes were different. Harder. Sadder. "The assassin."

Nolan froze.

His eyes widened, his body beginning to shake without his permission. The towel fell from his numb fingers.

"What has happened to her... It's been hours and I haven't seen her or Ralph..." His thoughts spun wildly, panic clawing at his throat. "Don't tell me the story has started fast-forwarding..."

He stared at his mother, who stared down at her own hands again, her fingers twisting together.

"Where is she?" Nolan asked. His voice came out soft, but underneath it was something cold. Something dangerous.

"Your answer is the one that will determine where she will be going."

Layla's tone was soft, gentle even, but the intensity behind her words could be felt like heat from a fire. This was not a question. This was a trial. A judgment.

Nolan's mind raced, searching for arguments, for pleas, for anything that might convince his mother to spare Isabella. He knew what Layla was. In the novels, she was one of the Six Calamities of the Kingdom of Valdoria, a title earned through blood and ruin. She was known as the Stone Wall, unmovable, unbreakable, unforgiving.

And in those same novels, she had suffered more than anyone.

Her first child, murdered. Her husband, lost to war. Her second child, taken from her. Her lands, stolen. By the end of the story, she had nothing left but grief and a name that children whispered in fear.

But that hadn't happened yet. Not in this timeline. Not with Nolan here.

"Because..." He paused, gathering his courage, meeting his mother's eyes. "No person should live a life of a weapon."

Layla lifted her head, confusion flickering across her face.

"Have you seen how this world operates behind closed doors?" Nolan's voice grew stronger, fueled by memories of the novel, of the suffering he had read about and now witnessed. "Life is spilled for no good reason. Nobles starve commoners with every loss they suffer, and no one bats an eye. I saved Isabella because I could feel her pain. Sure, everyone has a past, but that doesn't mean we should let them suffer for it forever."

He looked down, his own eyes filling with tears he couldn't stop. "And now... I get to see another side of her that no one could ever see. Sure, her hands will always be full of blood, innocent and guilty alike. But I also want to be there. I know with her aid and Ralph's aid, we will make a difference. Even if it's little, it's still something."

He paused, swallowing hard.

"So, Mother, I beg you..."

He looked up at her, his eyes burning with a determination that surprised even himself.

"No... I am telling you. If a single hair falls from her head, then believe me, every part of me shall be destroyed as well."

Layla's eyes widened, the glimmer in them turning to something like shock, like recognition, like the first crack in a wall that had stood for too long.

The golden radiance had faded to a faint glow, then to nothing, leaving behind only the memory of something impossible. Isabella smiled. It was small, tired, but real. She looked down from her perch in the tree and released a heavy breath, her shoulders dropping, the tension of the day finally leaving her muscles. "We rest here for the night." She jumped from the branch, landing silently on the moss below. "You all better get some rest." --- On the far end of the forest, Nolan collapsed. His body hit the ground like a puppet with its strings cut, his remaining arm flung out, his eyes rolling back. The purple flames had died. The wind had stilled. All that remained was a boy, broken and bleeding, who had given everything he had. "Master!" Xavier ran to him, sliding to his knees, his hands shaking as he checked f

Around him, dozens of golden strings lay dead and dull on the black floor, their light extinguished, their magic spent."Another wrong string chosen..." The voice echoed through the darkness, dripping with mockery, with amusement, with the cruel patience of something that had watched mortals fail for centuries. "This sure is entertaining. Which one will you choose next? Another wrong string, or..."Without another thought, Xavier reached out and pulled another. It turned gray in his hand, the light dying before it could even flicker. His eyes widened, horror flooding his chest."Wrong yet again."Electricity surged through Xavier's body, ten times stronger than before. He had not spoken a word since they left the clearing, had not moved, had not breathed in any way that suggested consciousness. The knight ran on, branches whipping his face, roots threatening to trip him with every step. His lungs burned. His legs ached. But he did not stop. Could not stop. "Hey, you..." The voice came from behind him, low and dark and completely wrong. It did not sound like a wounded boy. It sounded like something that had crawled out of a grave and decided to keep walking. The knight paused mid-step, his eyes widening, his whole body freezing in place. "Ma... Master?" "Don't you think you've done enough running around for the day?" Nolan asked, his expression still hidden, his voice carrying an e

Chapter 26Hours passed at the far north, where Hilda and her army pushed deeper into the forest. They had cleared six stages of different beasts, each one more vicious than the last. Blood painted their armor in streaks of green, black, and crimson. Their swords dulled. Their shields cracked. But they kept moving."We stop here for now."Hilda stood at the edge of a small clearing, her eyes scanning the darkness between the trees. The forest ahead seemed to breathe, its branches swaying without wind, its roots trembling with something buried deep beneath the earth. Her men dropped to the ground, gasping, their bodies hitting the dirt with exhausted thuds."Thank the heavens above... I thought we were still going." One knight sprawled on his back, staring at the canopy, his chest heaving. Others relaxed against tree trunks, their armor clinking softly, their faces pale beneath the grime."Eat up and drink water. Tend the wounded. We head out in an hour's time." Hilda's voice was flat,
