Chapter 18
"How... How do you..." Isabella's voice cracked, barely a whisper. She stepped back, her heel scraping against the marble, her eyes darting around the grand living room like a trapped animal searching for escape. The chandeliers cast fractured light across her face, making her look like a broken doll. Layla stared at her. Hard. Unblinking. Gold light began to flare around her, faint at first, then brighter, pulsing with every heartbeat. The air grew heavy, charged, dangerous. A mother's protective instinct made manifest. "Hmm... So will you agree... Huh??? Issa... I mean Roselite?" The voice came from the couch, soft, mumbled, half-asleep. Nolan's head turned to the other side, his face peaceful, innocent, completely unaware of the storm breaking around him. Layla's aura vanished instantly. She turned toward her son, the gold light dying like a snuffed candle, her eyes searching his sleeping face for... something. Anything. Finding only the soft breathing of a boy too exhausted to wake. "It seems like brother has taken a liking to you..." Victor's voice cut through the silence, smooth as silk and cold as winter. He walked past the frozen tableau and settled onto a single couch, crossing his legs with the casual ease of a man who had orchestrated this entire moment. "If it weren't for that, you'd already be a goner." He leaned back, his smile widening into something that showed too many teeth. "But who said you would survive even if that were the case?" A dark grin spread across his face, the grin of a man who enjoyed watching others realize they were already dead. Isabella's heart pounded so hard she felt it in her throat, her temples, her fingertips. It wanted to leave her chest, to run away before the rest of her could follow. "Wha..." Her voice came out creaking, rusty, barely human. "You're going to kill me?" "No, dear..." Victor's eyes drifted to the ceiling, studying the frescoes as if admiring art. "That would be stupid of me." He paused. The silence stretched, thin and sharp as a wire. "But it's no matter, you're already a target to the higher-ups." Isabella's blood turned to ice. "But then again..." Victor's gaze dropped back to her, heavy and calculating. "Killing you would secure a lump sum of gold. Enough to pay back all the misdeeds my older brother caused over the years." "Then get on with it." The words fell from Isabella's lips like stones into still water. Victor's head snapped straight, his mask cracking, just for a moment, revealing genuine surprise beneath the polished cruelty. Isabella stood tall. Her face was dark and serious, her posture straight as a soldier's, her hands steady at her sides. The trembling girl from moments ago had vanished. In her place stood someone who had already died once and found the experience... freeing. "Finish what your weak brother couldn't do..." Her eyes met Victor's, unflinching. "After all, it's not like I'm the only one sent here to take his head." "What do you mean by that!?" Ralph jumped forward, his hand on his sword, his face flushed with confusion and dawning horror. "There are over twenty assassins in this house on the very same mission I failed..." Isabella's finger rose, pointing straight at Victor with deadly precision. "Four of them belong to you. Right?" Layla's heart paused. Literally stopped for one terrible beat before slamming back to life. "What do you mean by that..." Her voice was barely audible, her hands pressed against her chest as if holding herself together. "My son would never intend to take the life of his brother!" "She's not wrong, Mother." Victor stood, his movements fluid and unhurried. "But neither are you, Mother." He turned toward the shadows in the room's four corners, the spaces between furniture, the gaps behind curtains, the darkness that seemed too thick to be natural. "You may appear." Four shadows detached themselves from the walls. They moved like smoke given form, sliding across the floor without sound, without breath. They knelt in a perfect circle around Victor, their faces hidden behind porcelain masks, white, expressionless, nightmare faces with empty eye holes. Ralph and Layla remained frozen, rooted to the spot by shock. Even Hilda, who had faced dragons and demons, stood cool but wordless, her composure cracking around the edges. So many secrets. So many knives hidden in so many backs. And all of them being revealed in one suffocating moment. "How did you know they were there...?" Victor asked, his smile returning, curious despite himself. "Because they are below me." Isabella's voice was calm now, almost serene. "Even if I were in my room, I would locate their movements. Their breathing. Their heartbeat." She had trained for this. Lived for this. Died for this. "Hmmm." Victor lifted his hand, one finger pointing at her like a death sentence. "Attack." The four vanished. So did Isabella. Steel clashed against steel in mid-air, sparks flashing where no bodies could be seen. The room erupted into chaos, furniture splintering, paintings tearing, the chandelier swinging wildly as invisible forces collided again and again. This was an assassin's battle. Silent. Deadly. Beautiful in its brutality. Even though no one could be seen, they could be sensed. The air itself seemed to bleed. A body fell, thud, unconscious, mask cracked. Another followed, crash, into the wall, leaving a spiderweb of cracks in the plaster. Then the third dropped, gasping, clutching a wound that wouldn't stop bleeding. Silence returned. Isabella materialized from nothing, her hand wrapped around the last assassin's throat, her dagger pressed against the porcelain mask hard enough to draw a thin line of blood. She held the assassin like a shield, her eyes blazing with purple flames, flames unlike any magic Nolan had shown. These were born of rage, of survival, of a woman who had been hunted for too long and had finally stopped running. "I told you..." Her voice was low and dangerous, shaking with barely contained fury. "If you want to finish me off, then do it yourself." She twisted the dagger, just enough to make her point. "Not with kids." Her eyes blazed at Victor, anger mixed with determination, hatred mixed with something that looked almost like pity. She had been where he stood. She had sent others to die in her place. And she had learned, too late, that there was no glory in blood on your hands that you didn't earn yourself. The room held its breath. Waiting.Latest Chapter
The Hand of a God
Chapter 31. "What was that...?" One of Isabella's knights stared at the dimming light on the horizon, his sword hanging limp at his side, his face pale with awe. The golden radiance had faded to a faint glow, then to nothing, leaving behind only the memory of something impossible. Isabella smiled. It was small, tired, but real. She looked down from her perch in the tree and released a heavy breath, her shoulders dropping, the tension of the day finally leaving her muscles. "We rest here for the night." She jumped from the branch, landing silently on the moss below. "You all better get some rest." --- On the far end of the forest, Nolan collapsed. His body hit the ground like a puppet with its strings cut, his remaining arm flung out, his eyes rolling back. The purple flames had died. The wind had stilled. All that remained was a boy, broken and bleeding, who had given everything he had. "Master!" Xavier ran to him, sliding to his knees, his hands shaking as he checked f
Absolute Light
"Arrrggghhhhh!!!"Xavier's scream tore through the void, raw and broken, as electric shocks crawled over his body like living snakes. He fell to one knee, his head hanging low, his whole body convulsing. Around him, dozens of golden strings lay dead and dull on the black floor, their light extinguished, their magic spent."Another wrong string chosen..." The voice echoed through the darkness, dripping with mockery, with amusement, with the cruel patience of something that had watched mortals fail for centuries. "This sure is entertaining. Which one will you choose next? Another wrong string, or..."Without another thought, Xavier reached out and pulled another. It turned gray in his hand, the light dying before it could even flicker. His eyes widened, horror flooding his chest."Wrong yet again."Electricity surged through Xavier's body, ten times stronger than before. He screamed, his voice cracking, his eyes rolling back until only the whites showed. He collapsed to the ground, twit
The Burn and the Choice
'Chapter 29 The knight kept running, Nolan slung over his shoulder like a sack of grain. Blood soaked through the knight's armor, warm and sticky, painting his back in dark ribbons. Nolan's face was hidden in shadow, his eyes invisible, his body limp and silent. He had not spoken a word since they left the clearing, had not moved, had not breathed in any way that suggested consciousness. The knight ran on, branches whipping his face, roots threatening to trip him with every step. His lungs burned. His legs ached. But he did not stop. Could not stop. "Hey, you..." The voice came from behind him, low and dark and completely wrong. It did not sound like a wounded boy. It sounded like something that had crawled out of a grave and decided to keep walking. The knight paused mid-step, his eyes widening, his whole body freezing in place. "Ma... Master?" "Don't you think you've done enough running around for the day?" Nolan asked, his expression still hidden, his voice carrying an e
The Price of Survival
Chapter 28 The defense dragged on for over twenty minutes, each second stretching into eternity. Nolan stood alone in the offense, his magic tearing through the darkness, fire and wind and earth exploding from his palms in desperate bursts. Blood sprayed across the forest floor, black and red, painting the leaves in streaks of death. The lizards learned. They adapted. Their attention switched to him alone, abandoning the shielded knights to focus on the mage who burned their kin. They attacked in groups, coordinated, silent, shadows given fangs and claws. His men stepped in, defending him as much as they could, their swords flashing, their shields rising, their bodies becoming walls between their lord and the monsters."Give me your sword."Nolan didn't wait for permission. He snatched the blade from a knight's hand and stormed into the fray, his movements wild, reckless, driven by adrenaline and fear. He slaughtered lizard after lizard, steel meeting scales, magic meeting flesh. But
The Chosen One
'Chapter 27 -"Young Master Nolan!!! Are you injured?!"One of the knights rushed over, his boots crunching through leaves, his face pale with worry. He reached out a hand, then stopped, his whole body freezing in place.Nolan slowly turned. His expression was dark and serious, his purple eyes glowing brighter than ever before, two burning embers in the shadow of the forest. He stared at the knight for a long moment, silent, assessing, seeing something the others couldn't.The knight took one step back. Blonde hair. Blue eyes. A silver piercing on his right ear catching the dim light. Young. Maybe seventeen. Scared but trying to hide it."I'm alright. Tell me... what's your name?" Nolan asked, his voice calm, cool, controlled."My name is Xavier, my lord." The knight gave a slight bow, his hand trembling at his side.Nolan's heart skipped a beat. His blood turned cold."It truly is him..." he thought, his mind reeling. "Why is he appearing so early in the book? And in this family's ho
The Shadow Looms
Chapter 26Hours passed at the far north, where Hilda and her army pushed deeper into the forest. They had cleared six stages of different beasts, each one more vicious than the last. Blood painted their armor in streaks of green, black, and crimson. Their swords dulled. Their shields cracked. But they kept moving."We stop here for now."Hilda stood at the edge of a small clearing, her eyes scanning the darkness between the trees. The forest ahead seemed to breathe, its branches swaying without wind, its roots trembling with something buried deep beneath the earth. Her men dropped to the ground, gasping, their bodies hitting the dirt with exhausted thuds."Thank the heavens above... I thought we were still going." One knight sprawled on his back, staring at the canopy, his chest heaving. Others relaxed against tree trunks, their armor clinking softly, their faces pale beneath the grime."Eat up and drink water. Tend the wounded. We head out in an hour's time." Hilda's voice was flat,
