'Chapter 17

Back at Nolan's home, Layla stood by the front door, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles had gone white. Behind her, the maids huddled together like frightened birds, their whispers barely audible over the howling wind outside. Every creak of the old house made them flinch. Every shadow seemed alive.

They had been waiting for hours.

The door slowly opened with a groan of rusted hinges.

Isabella entered first. Her eyes were fixed on the floor, her shoulders slumped, her face drawn and pale, the face of someone who had seen too much and couldn't unsee it. She looked like a mourner at a funeral.

Hilda followed, her expression unreadable as stone, but her jaw was clenched tight enough to crack teeth.

Then Ralph stepped inside, and Layla's heart stopped.

He carried a large sack over one shoulder, something heavy and wet dragging behind him. Blood trailed down the canvas in thick, dark ribbons, pooling on the marble floor with every step he took. The smell hit them first, iron and rot and something worse.

Layla's heart froze. The world tilted. Her vision blurred at the edges.

The other maids gasped, hands flying to cover their mouths. One of them whimpered, a high, broken sound.

"N... no..." Layla whispered, the word barely making it past her lips. "How..."

"Because..."

The voice came from behind Ralph, bright and teasing and so painfully alive.

Nolan stepped through the doorway, and the room held its breath.

Isabella's head snapped up, her eyes flooding with relief so sharp it looked like pain. Ralph's shoulders dropped, the tension draining from his body in one long exhale. Even Hilda's mask cracked, just for a second, her eyes widening a fraction before she looked away.

"I'm a genius mage." Nolan let the words hang in the air, his aura radiating around him like heat from a furnace. A smirk played at his lips, tired but triumphant. "What? You thought I was in that sack?"

He chuckled, the sound warm and young and so completely out of place in the blood-scented room.

"My child!!"

Layla didn't remember moving. One moment she was standing frozen by the door, and the next she was across the room, her arms wrapped around Nolan so tight his ribs creaked. She buried her face in his neck, inhaling the smell of smoke and sweat and blood, her son, her baby, alive and warm and real.

"Mom!!!" Nolan wheezed, tapping her back with a weak fist. "I can't breathe."

She didn't let go. Not yet. Not when she'd spent hours imagining him dead in a ditch, his body torn apart by monsters, his eyes empty and cold. She needed to feel him breathe. Needed to feel his heart beat against hers.

Finally, reluctantly, she loosened her grip. She pulled back just enough to look at his face, really look at it, and her eyes filled with tears that refused to fall. Glistening. Terrified. Grateful.

"I'm so glad you're still alive," she whispered, her voice cracking like old glass. "My dear."

Nolan's smirk softened into something real. Something gentle. He reached up and touched her cheek, just for a second, before walking past her and dropping onto the couch with a groan of exhaustion.

"Now then..." He stretched out his hand, palm up, and the air above it shimmered. "Let's get to it."

A purple warp tore open in front of him, a hole in reality, rimmed with crackling energy. From the darkness inside, objects began to fly out, pouring themselves onto the table in a cascade of steel and gold and magic.

Hero's weapons. Enchanted swords that hummed with power. Axes that gleamed with runes. Shields that bore the marks of ancient battles. Bows strung with silver thread. Jewelry that caught the light and threw it back in a thousand colors, rings, necklaces, crowns, all pulsing with dormant spells.

The room erupted in chaos.

Everyone stumbled backward, eyes wide, mouths open. A maid screamed. Another fainted dead away, hitting the floor with a thud nobody noticed.

Hilda's mask shattered completely. Her eyes were enormous, her chest pumping up and down in sharp, shallow breaths. She reached out a hand as if to touch a sword, then pulled it back like she'd been burned.

Ralph simply stared, his mouth working silently, no words coming out. He, a knight who had seen kingdoms fall, who had buried brothers in war, couldn't speak.

"Spatial warp..." Isabella muttered, her own chest heaving, her fingers pressed against her throat as if checking her own pulse. "How..."

Nolan leaned back, legs crossed on the table, looking for all the world like a king surveying his treasury. His purple eyes glowed faintly in the dim light, eerie and beautiful and wrong.

"So..." He gestured lazily at the pile of treasure. "With this much stuff, how much will they cost?"

Silence.

Nobody could utter a word. They exchanged glances, Hilda to Ralph, Ralph to Isabella, Isabella to Layla, then back to Nolan, who had already closed his eyes. His head lolled to the side. His breathing deepened, slowed, steadied.

He was asleep.

Just like that. After everything. After fighting monsters and coming back covered in blood, he had simply... fallen asleep. Like a child after a long day of play.

"He's gone asleep..." Isabella whispered, her voice filled with something that might have been awe.

"Guards," Ralph commanded, finding his voice at last, though it cracked on the first word. "Take the equipment and store it in the basement."

The guards, two young men who had been standing frozen by the door, snapped into action. They approached the table cautiously, as if the weapons might bite, and reached for a sword.

It vanished.

Purple flames licked across their fingers, and the weapon dissolved into sparks, sucked back into the warp that still hovered above Nolan's sleeping hand.

"What the..." Ralph shouted, stumbling backward. "Where are they?"

"Back into the warp."

The voice came from the stairs, calm, cold, amused. Everyone turned.

Victor walked down slowly, one hand in the pocket of his noble attire, the other trailing along the banister. His face was smooth and unreadable, his dark eyes scanning the room like a predator counting prey. He stopped at the bottom step, looking down at them from his height advantage, and smiled.

It wasn't a nice smile.

"Scatter," he commanded, his voice soft as velvet and sharp as a blade.

The maids fled without a word, skirts rustling, feet pattering. The guards followed, bowing as they backed out of the room. Within seconds, only five remained, Ralph, Isabella, Hilda, Layla, and the sleeping Nolan.

Victor descended the final step and walked toward Isabella, his boots clicking against the marble. He stopped inches from her, close enough that she could smell the wine on his breath, the expensive cologne, the underlying scent of something rotten.

"You're Isabella Hoshino, right?" he asked, his head tilting like a curious bird. "The assassin who attempted to assassinate my elder brother?"

He circled her slowly, his smile never wavering, his eyes never blinking.

Layla's head snapped toward Isabella, her eyes turning sharp and dangerous, the eyes of a mother who had just realized a viper had been sleeping in her nest.

Isabella stepped back, her heel hitting the wall. She had nowhere to go. Her hands shook at her sides, her breath coming in short, desperate gasps. She grasped for air like a drowning woman reaching for the surface.

"How..." she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Do... do you know?"

The room held its breath. Outside, the wind howled louder, as if the world itself was waiting for the answer.
