Chapter 21
Layla got up without a word, walking out of the room. She paused at the doorway, her hand on the frame, her back to her son. The morning light caught the gold in her hair, making her look like a statue carved from grief and grace. "Your decision better be a good one in the end." Then she walked out, her footsteps fading down the hall, not waiting for a response. Not needing one. Nolan stared at the empty doorway, not uttering a word until he released a long, shaky sigh. It hurt to breathe. It hurt to think about what he had just done, the line he had drawn, the people he had chosen between. "I can't lose Isabella at the moment..." he thought, his fingers clenching the bedsheets tight, twisting the fabric until his knuckles turned white. "And yes, my decision is right..." His eyes burned with a determination like never before, his aura flowing around him in a relaxed state, purple and gold mingling like fire and sunrise. But beneath the calm, his heart hammered against his ribs. "All I need now is to level up more... Then I will save him." --- Hours later, Nolan entered the training ground and froze. Dozens of knights filled the yard, swinging swords, clashing shields, running drills in perfect formation. Sweat gleamed on their foreheads. Grunts of effort filled the air. It was a Sunday. They should have been resting. Drinking. Sleeping off the week. "What the..." Nolan muttered between his lips, his brow furrowing. "Why are they doing this on a Sunday?" "After what you did yesterday..." A familiar voice came from behind him, low and warm. "To them, it was a sign of a strong leader in place. So they want to prove themselves useful to you." Nolan turned with a smile already forming on his lips. "Is that so, Ralph... Well then, now I get why you never came to my room. Well then, deal with them." "As you wish, my lord." Ralph bowed slightly, the gesture still foreign on his broad frame, still carrying the weight of a knight who had once doubted. "Let me get to it then." He walked toward the knights, his boots crunching on gravel, only to be stopped midway by Nolan's voice. "Hey, Ralph... Where is Isabella?" Ralph paused. His shoulders tensed, just for a moment, before he turned back. His face was dark, his eyes shadowed with something that looked like worry. Or guilt. "You should find her by the garden." "Okay..." Nolan muttered slowly, watching Ralph continue toward the knights, his movements brisk and efficient. Something in Ralph's expression nagged at him, a splinter under the skin. He walked out of the training ground, heading toward the garden path Ralph had mentioned. But as he stepped inside the mansion, he came to a halt. Hilda stood in the hallway, a bag slung over her shoulder, her hand on the door handle of her room. She wore traveling clothes, simple and practical, not the training robes he had expected. "What the heck is going on today?" Nolan thought, his mind reeling. "First, Mom finds out about Isabella. Second, Ralph has subordinates who suddenly want to take their jobs seriously. And now her..." "Miss Hilda!!" He shouted, waving a hand, his voice too loud, too cheerful, trying to mask the panic climbing his throat. Hilda's eyes shot up for a split second, sharp and startled, before she gathered her composure. Her face smoothed into the cold mask he knew too well. "Sir Nolan." She greeted him with her cold expression, her voice flat and formal. "How may I be of help to you?" "Well, I believe you know how..." He stepped closer, his smile faltering at the edges. "We still have mana practice today, don't we?" "I'm sorry, but there is nothing I can be of help with." She turned away, her hand tightening on the bag strap. "Your mana is high and balanced as it is." Nolan quickly grabbed her wrist, stopping her. His fingers wrapped around her skin, warm and firm, and he felt her pulse racing beneath his thumb. "There is no way I've already reached the level you want me to reach," he replied, his tone dropping into something darker, something desperate. Hilda turned back to face him. Her eyes were shining, wet with tears she refused to let fall. She looked down at his hand on her wrist, then up at his face, her lips trembling. "Even so..." Her voice cracked, just barely. "Would you trust someone like me? Someone who was once one of the gang that wanted you dead?" Nolan's eyes widened for a moment, caught off guard by the raw pain in her voice. Then they cooled, softened, filled with something that looked like understanding. "I don't care what your past is..." He said it slowly, each word deliberate, a promise carved in air. "Nor do I care if you were once one of them. It's all in the past, isn't it?" He stepped closer, his hand sliding from her wrist to her fingers, holding them gently. "I need the person who is now standing in front of me. The Miss Hilda I know. The Miss Hilda I love and adore." Hilda's eyes widened, her breath hitching in her throat. She bit her lower lip, hard enough to draw blood, her free hand clenching into a fist at her side. She closed her eyes, forcing the tears back, wrestling with the sob that wanted to break free. Words failed her. They stuck in her throat, heavy and sharp, too many to choose from, none big enough for what she felt. "So please..." Nolan's voice dropped to a whisper, his fingers squeezing hers. "Teach me what I need to know." Hilda stood there, trembling, her bag forgotten on her shoulder, her whole world narrowed to the boy in front of her who saw her, really saw her, and chose to trust her anyway. The tears won. One escaped, tracing a silver line down her cheek. But she did not wipe it away.Latest Chapter
The Hand of a God
Chapter 31. "What was that...?" One of Isabella's knights stared at the dimming light on the horizon, his sword hanging limp at his side, his face pale with awe. The golden radiance had faded to a faint glow, then to nothing, leaving behind only the memory of something impossible. Isabella smiled. It was small, tired, but real. She looked down from her perch in the tree and released a heavy breath, her shoulders dropping, the tension of the day finally leaving her muscles. "We rest here for the night." She jumped from the branch, landing silently on the moss below. "You all better get some rest." --- On the far end of the forest, Nolan collapsed. His body hit the ground like a puppet with its strings cut, his remaining arm flung out, his eyes rolling back. The purple flames had died. The wind had stilled. All that remained was a boy, broken and bleeding, who had given everything he had. "Master!" Xavier ran to him, sliding to his knees, his hands shaking as he checked f
Absolute Light
"Arrrggghhhhh!!!"Xavier's scream tore through the void, raw and broken, as electric shocks crawled over his body like living snakes. He fell to one knee, his head hanging low, his whole body convulsing. Around him, dozens of golden strings lay dead and dull on the black floor, their light extinguished, their magic spent."Another wrong string chosen..." The voice echoed through the darkness, dripping with mockery, with amusement, with the cruel patience of something that had watched mortals fail for centuries. "This sure is entertaining. Which one will you choose next? Another wrong string, or..."Without another thought, Xavier reached out and pulled another. It turned gray in his hand, the light dying before it could even flicker. His eyes widened, horror flooding his chest."Wrong yet again."Electricity surged through Xavier's body, ten times stronger than before. He screamed, his voice cracking, his eyes rolling back until only the whites showed. He collapsed to the ground, twit
The Burn and the Choice
'Chapter 29 The knight kept running, Nolan slung over his shoulder like a sack of grain. Blood soaked through the knight's armor, warm and sticky, painting his back in dark ribbons. Nolan's face was hidden in shadow, his eyes invisible, his body limp and silent. He had not spoken a word since they left the clearing, had not moved, had not breathed in any way that suggested consciousness. The knight ran on, branches whipping his face, roots threatening to trip him with every step. His lungs burned. His legs ached. But he did not stop. Could not stop. "Hey, you..." The voice came from behind him, low and dark and completely wrong. It did not sound like a wounded boy. It sounded like something that had crawled out of a grave and decided to keep walking. The knight paused mid-step, his eyes widening, his whole body freezing in place. "Ma... Master?" "Don't you think you've done enough running around for the day?" Nolan asked, his expression still hidden, his voice carrying an e
The Price of Survival
Chapter 28 The defense dragged on for over twenty minutes, each second stretching into eternity. Nolan stood alone in the offense, his magic tearing through the darkness, fire and wind and earth exploding from his palms in desperate bursts. Blood sprayed across the forest floor, black and red, painting the leaves in streaks of death. The lizards learned. They adapted. Their attention switched to him alone, abandoning the shielded knights to focus on the mage who burned their kin. They attacked in groups, coordinated, silent, shadows given fangs and claws. His men stepped in, defending him as much as they could, their swords flashing, their shields rising, their bodies becoming walls between their lord and the monsters."Give me your sword."Nolan didn't wait for permission. He snatched the blade from a knight's hand and stormed into the fray, his movements wild, reckless, driven by adrenaline and fear. He slaughtered lizard after lizard, steel meeting scales, magic meeting flesh. But
The Chosen One
'Chapter 27 -"Young Master Nolan!!! Are you injured?!"One of the knights rushed over, his boots crunching through leaves, his face pale with worry. He reached out a hand, then stopped, his whole body freezing in place.Nolan slowly turned. His expression was dark and serious, his purple eyes glowing brighter than ever before, two burning embers in the shadow of the forest. He stared at the knight for a long moment, silent, assessing, seeing something the others couldn't.The knight took one step back. Blonde hair. Blue eyes. A silver piercing on his right ear catching the dim light. Young. Maybe seventeen. Scared but trying to hide it."I'm alright. Tell me... what's your name?" Nolan asked, his voice calm, cool, controlled."My name is Xavier, my lord." The knight gave a slight bow, his hand trembling at his side.Nolan's heart skipped a beat. His blood turned cold."It truly is him..." he thought, his mind reeling. "Why is he appearing so early in the book? And in this family's ho
The Shadow Looms
Chapter 26Hours passed at the far north, where Hilda and her army pushed deeper into the forest. They had cleared six stages of different beasts, each one more vicious than the last. Blood painted their armor in streaks of green, black, and crimson. Their swords dulled. Their shields cracked. But they kept moving."We stop here for now."Hilda stood at the edge of a small clearing, her eyes scanning the darkness between the trees. The forest ahead seemed to breathe, its branches swaying without wind, its roots trembling with something buried deep beneath the earth. Her men dropped to the ground, gasping, their bodies hitting the dirt with exhausted thuds."Thank the heavens above... I thought we were still going." One knight sprawled on his back, staring at the canopy, his chest heaving. Others relaxed against tree trunks, their armor clinking softly, their faces pale beneath the grime."Eat up and drink water. Tend the wounded. We head out in an hour's time." Hilda's voice was flat,
