Chapter 10: The Botanist in the Dome
"You’ve got to be kidding me," Bastian muttered, adjusting his grip on the heavy plasma torch. "That thing looks like it’s breathing.""It is breathing," Mika said, her voice tight through her respirator. She kept her assault rifle raised, scanning the overgrown highway. "The spores are feeding it. Can you cut through or not?""I can cut through anything if I turn the intensity up," Bastian said, flipping the ignition switch. A bright, sizzling blue flame hissed into life at the tip of the nozzle. "But I don't want to trigger a chemical explosion if these vines are packed with methane.""The System says the outer sheath is mostly acidic sap, not gas," Mika countered. "Just watch your splash zone. If that sap gets on your armor, it'll eat right through to your skin.""Thanks for the encouragement," Bastian grunted. He stepped up to the massive, writhing green wall. "Here goes nothing.""Don't get too close!" Mika warned, stepping back. "If it reacts like the others, it might lash out."
Chapter 9: The Spore Threat
Mika smoothed out a crumpled, dirt-streaked map on the metal workbench. "Look here," she said, pointing a finger at a shaded circle. "This is where we are, Fire Station 22. And this yellow mass? That’s the spore bloom.""How fast is it actually moving?" Bastian asked, leaning over her shoulder to get a closer look."Too fast," Mika replied, shaking her head. "The wind is carrying it directly toward us. The vanguard of the rot will reach this grid in forty-eight hours.""Forty-eight hours," Ariana muttered, leaning heavily on her crutch as she joined them. "So we have two days before our cozy little fortress gets swallowed by a giant wall of toxic mold.""Yes," Mika said, her voice grim. "And once it hits, any exposed organic matter on the surface is finished. It turns crops, soil, and plants into toxic mush. If we don't act, we’ll eventually starve in here.""I don't plan on starving," Bastian said. "What's the play?""We need a
Chapter 8: A Fragile Treaty
"I've got her, Ariana. But we need to get back to the station. Right now.""Bastian, your filter is at eight percent!" Ariana’s voice vibrated with sheer panic over the radio. "You’re carrying a full-grown soldier in tactical gear through a yellow zone! If you don't run, you’re going to suffocate before you even reach the bay doors!""I'm running, I'm running!" Bastian gasped, his upgraded lungs burning as he bolted up the concrete stairs, holding Mika tightly against his chest."Warning," the System chimed inside his mind, its blue light flashing aggressively. "Atmospheric toxicity levels rising. Respirator filter efficiency: four percent. Please accelerate.""Easy for you to say," Bastian muttered through the rubber diaphragm of his mask. "You aren't carrying a human shield."He burst out of the bunker's concrete entryway and back into the thick, yellow soup of Sector Four. The world was a blinding, sickening haze of sulfur and nitric oxides. Every step felt heavier than the last, h
Chapter 7: Fierce Defense
"Bastian! Do not go in there!" Ariana’s voice shrieked in his ear, nearly blowing out his earpiece. "The bio-scanners are spiking! There is something else down there!""I'm already at the bottom!" Bastian yelled back, rounding the final landing of the concrete stairs. "And I'm not turning around now!""Hostile entities detected," the System’s voice chimed inside his head, painting three jagged red outlines through the heavy darkness. "Nanite-Infected Scavengers. Structural armor: High. Weak point: Central neural core located behind the cranial plate.""Thanks for the heads up!" Bastian shouted, his upgraded eyes instantly locking onto the chaotic scene. At the end of a narrow, pipe-lined corridor, a woman in scorched tactical gear was pinned against a heavy steel door. Two metallic-shelled beasts—resembling oversized, skinless wolves with glowing silver veins running through their armored bodies—were snapping at her face. She was holding them back with nothing but the barrel of an emp
Chapter 6: The Soldier's Signal
The static hissed loudly from the old fire station radio speaker, filling the garage with a harsh, rhythmic white noise."...any station receiving this transmission, respond immediately..." the voice repeated, fading under another wave of distortion before starting over."Is it just going to loop like that?" Bastian asked, leaning over the dusty metal console and squinting at the flickering green dials."Looks like an automated emergency beacon," Ariana said, her fingers flying across the glowing keyboard of the newly powered station computer. "It's transmitting on an old military frequency. High-band VHF. That's why our new antenna picked it up so clearly.""Bravo-Actual," Bastian murmured, shaking his head. "I remember that call sign from the early days of the collapse. It was a regional defense unit. But Sector Four... where is that exactly?""The industrial basin near the old shipyards," Ariana replied, looking up at him with wide, worried eyes. "But Bastian, that area is a death
Chapter 5: Sparks in the Dark
"Ninety seconds?" Ariana repeated, her voice cracking as she gripped the edge of the workbench. "Bastian, what does that mean? A runner? A pack?""The System says it's artificial," Bastian said, his eyes scanning the garage. "Do you have a weapon in this bag?""Front pocket," Ariana said, pointing a shaky finger. "My steel-limb crossbow. The bolts are loaded. Grab it!"Bastian unzipped the leather pouch and pulled out the compact, heavy-duty weapon. "Got it. How do I get to the roof?""The maintenance ladder is behind the main engine bay," Ariana said, coughing slightly. "Through that grey door. Hurry!""Stay here, keep your head down," Bastian ordered, rushing toward the door."Like I have a choice with this leg!" she called after him. "Just don't get yourself killed!""I'll try!" Bastian yelled back.He burst through the door, finding the rusty iron ladder. His upgraded muscles made the climb effortless, his hands flying up the rungs. He threw open the heavy roof hatch and scrambled
