"——Come on."

 ......

"Hey. ...wake up."

 What's going on…?

 Who's talking…?

"Hey… wake up…"

"..."

When I opened my eyes, a girl who looked about elementary school age was looking down at me from right next to me.

"Come on… You shouldn't be sleeping in a place like this…"

"..."

I sat up abruptly and looked around.

"...? What's going on?"

"Where… am I…?"

"Huh…?"

An unfamiliar room. People I'd never seen before. A scene I didn't recognize.

That was the scene that greeted me when I woke up.

"Wh-what's wrong…?"

"..."

"H-hey… you've been acting weird since a little while ago…?"

My head feels fuzzy.

…Actually, who is this girl?

"Wait, who are you?"

"Huh…?"

"Where am I? I don't remember leaving this room."

"I-I don't… understand what you're saying…"

The girl in front of me is still confused.

But I press on regardless.

"What's your name? Where are you from?"

"Come on… what's gotten into you all of a sudden…? Are you still half-asleep…?"

"No, I'm not half-asleep. I really don't remember anything."

"It's me… It's Reese…"

The girl who introduced herself as Reese had the build of an elementary school student and was dressed in ragged clothes.

Her clothes were worn out and frayed in places, looking well-worn.

Her hair was a mess, and it certainly couldn't be called pretty.

"Hey. What's really going on…? Zest…-kun…"

"…What?"

What did she just say?

"Huh? What's wrong…?"

"Listen. Is that 'Zest' my name?"

"Of course it is… You always call me that, don't you…

 The name Zest.

I definitely recognize that.

It's the character name I gave to a character in a certain game.

Ark Ravage Online.

Commonly known as ARO.

It's one of the most popular VRMMOs out there.

I'm hooked on ARO too, and I've been playing it for years now.

I'm so into it that people call me a "game addict."

And I named the character I use "Zest."

Does that mean I'm inside the game the world of ARO?

When did I log in?

No, that's not it.

I'm not inside the game.

Because there's no HP bar.

In the game world, HP and MP bars are displayed within my field of view by default.

There are also UI elements like item shortcuts and in-game time displayed.

In other words, you can tell at a glance that you're inside the game.

But right now, I can't see any of that.

Or is it just a glitch?

I try calling up the menu screen, but…

"...Huh. Nothing comes up."

"?"

So, does that mean this really is the real world...?

...But there's something off about it, isn't there?

I glance down at my feet.

"...What the...."

"Wh-what's wrong?"

What's going on here?

I'm wearing clothes I've never seen before.

The girl in front of me they're just as dirty as Reese's.

They look well-worn too, with holes here and there.

I don't remember ever wearing such ragged clothes?

I try standing up…

"Ugh…"

"A-are you okay!?"

I almost stumble right away.

 What is this body…?

It feels like I've slipped into someone else's body.

"Hey, Reese. Is there a mirror?"

"Um… it's over there."

"Over there, huh."

I walk in the direction Reese pointed.

Looking closely, the room wasn't very clean either.

It looked so old, like it was at least 50 years old.

When I reached the mirror, I immediately peered into it.

"Just as I thought…"

What I saw there was a handsome young man with silver hair and chiseled features.

"No doubt about it. This is the world of ARO."

The reflection showed the figure of Zest the character I had created.

"But something feels slightly off…?"

It was definitely the character I'd created, but I felt the details were different.

The biggest difference was his height.

I was sure I'd made him taller, but he'd shrunk a bit.

He was about the height of a middle schooler.

Was that why I almost stumbled when I stood up earlier?

It might be more accurate to say I'd been rejuvenated.

"...I'm starting to remember little by little."

I'm gradually recalling what happened before I woke up.

"That's right. I'm pretty sure I used the Reincarnation System."

The Reincarnation System.

It's a system available only to characters who have reached the level cap.

It resets your level and stats, letting you start over from Level 1.

However, you can carry over your acquired skills and items.

There are several benefits to reincarnation.

The biggest benefit is that you receive a permanent bonus to your stats.

Once you reach the level cap, your stats stop increasing.

After that, the only way to boost them is through items and equipment.

That's where the Reincarnation System comes in.

Your stats are reset once, but after that, you start receiving additional bonuses to your stats.

What's more, these bonuses are permanent and never disappear.

That's the mechanism that lets you get even stronger.

So, I guess I was trying to use that reincarnation system.

A confirmation window popped up, and I selected "Yes."

Then everything went pitch black…

......

――I have no memory of what happened after that.

When I woke up, everything was just as it had been before.

"So… does that mean I reincarnated?"

But there are a lot of things that don't add up.

I didn't hear anything about being transported to a place like this, and there shouldn't have been a feature where the character's appearance changes.

I've never equipped these ragged clothes I'm wearing, either.

The biggest difference is... it feels... too real.

I've been thinking about this for a while now, but my senses are strangely sharp.

ARO is a groundbreaking VRMMO that replicates the five senses, but it has its limits.

Pain perception, in particular, is restricted.

Otherwise, things would get out of hand when you take damage.

Without those limits, even though it's just a game world, you'd end up experiencing pain intense enough to knock you out.

I try pinching my cheek.

"...Ow, that hurts."

No way.

There's no way the sense of pain could be reproduced this accurately.

"That's ridiculous…"

…Could this be it?

"This should do it!"

This time, I try banging my head against the wall.

"Ow!"

It hurts like hell!

I instinctively crouch down right where I am.

"If this isn't a dream… does that mean I'm really in the world of an ARO game?"

It seems I've been reincarnated into a game world…

  • Chapter 170: The Information That Came After

While I was relaxing in the living room, I heard a knock at the front door along with someone's voice. The owner of the voice was Leon. When I headed to the entrance and opened the door, Leon was standing there with impeccable posture."Leon, what's up?""I've received some new information regarding that matter, so I came to inform you. If it's convenient, I can explain it immediately. What do you think?""That matter... Ah."Crap. I forgot.I'd asked Leon to look into Lise."About that... there's actually something I need to tell you too.""Then shall we talk inside the carriage? This way, please."Leon gestured toward a luxurious carriage. As always, it looked like an expensive, magnificent carriage.Just as I was about to step outside, I noticed Teresia in the back."Ah, Teresia. I'm going out for a bit, so if anyone comes looking for me, could you let them know?""Eh? Ah, yes. Understood.""Teresia...?"As I stepped outside and headed toward the carriage, I noticed Leon had frozen

  • Chapter 169: Lise's Proposal

The next day. After waking up in the morning, I left my room.As I walked toward the living room, I spotted Teresia. She seemed to notice me immediately as well."Ah... Lord Zest...""G-Good morning...""G-Good morning..."...It was awkward. After all, that had happened yesterday. There was no way either of us could simply pretend it hadn't.We both stood there in silence, but Teresia was the first to move, walking over to me."I'm sorry about yesterday... I wanted to express my gratitude to you, Lord Zest, but I couldn't hold myself back and got a little carried away...""I-I see... Well, I understand getting excited after being able to see again. So don't worry about it. I don't intend to blame you over something like that.""Uu..."That's right. So what happened yesterday really was just a momentary lapse of judgment. There's no way Teresia is actually like that. It was only temporary, like someone getting drunk.Let's forget about yesterday and just treat her normally from now on.

  • Chapter 168: Teresia's Gratitude

After Teresia arrived, we talked things over for a bit, and in the end, we decided she'd basically stay here at the mansion, just like Lise. Since she said she'd take care of all the household chores, I decided to leave everything to her.Even though she could now see, she was still blind. As an adventurer, that was far too severe a handicap. So, for the time being, she'd be living here. With this, Lise shouldn't have to feel lonely while we're out on subjugation missions anymore. Fortunately, she and Teresia got along well, too.I never imagined I'd find the kind of person I was looking for in a situation like this. You never know what life's going to throw at you. That night, I was relaxing alone in my room.It was then—"Lord Zest. I'd like to speak with you for a moment. May I come in?""Hm? Ah, sure.""Then, excuse me."The one who opened the door was Teresia. She slowly opened it before stepping inside. She then began walking toward me, but..."...!""Whoa! A-Are you okay!?"Som

  • Chapter 167: A New Resident

Now that Teresia could see, we decided to return to Celestia for the time being. We'd accomplished our objective, and there was no reason to continue hunting any further. With that, we arrived back in Celestia and headed home to the mansion."Lord Zest, thank you so much for everything today. I will never forget this kindness for as long as I live.""I learned something new from this too. Honestly, it was more like I had you help me test a theory. You don't need to make such a big deal out of it."After all, I hadn't known that Shared Vision would work even for someone who was blind. There might be other skill applications that even I didn't know about. Just discovering that possibility alone had made today worthwhile."If there is anything I can do for you, please tell me. If it is your wish, Lord Zest, I will do anything. This debt can never truly be repaid. Even if it takes my entire life, I shall devote myself to serving you.""N-No, you really don't have to go that far...""But I

  • Chapter 166: The Light That Illuminates the Darkness

There was no sign of any monsters nearby. It seemed the Queen Ant they had just defeated had been the last one. After confirming the area was safe, I walked over to Teresia."That should keep things safe for a while. Now that the Queen Ant is gone, they shouldn't be able to multiply anymore. Are you alright?""Yes. Thanks to everyone protecting me, I was able to remain unharmed and avoid any attacks from the monsters. Thank you very much.""Glad to hear it. Though honestly, this level of threat could've probably been handled even without me."Big Ants were numerous, but weak. Even the Queen Ant wasn't particularly strong. The others could have dealt with them just fine on their own. That said, I still stayed alert just in case something unexpected happened."That was my first time fighting so many monsters at once. There were even more than when we fought the goblins...""Monsters that appear in numbers like that are pretty rare. Big Ants are more the exception than the rule.""I see.

  • Chapter 165: Exterminating the Queen Ant

As Big Ants continued pouring out of the nest one after another, everyone moved into action and began taking them down."At this rate, we'll never finish if we kill them one by one... Ah, I've got it! Fiene! I'll gather them together, so wipe them all out at once!""Eh...? O-Okay. Leave it to me."Fiene immediately began chanting. While she did, Lapis raised her bow and activated a skill."They're packed together nicely... There! Gravity Point!"The arrow shot into the swarm and struck one of the Big Ants, killing it instantly. But the skill's effect continued.Using the arrow as its center, the surrounding Big Ants were pulled toward it one after another. They struggled to escape, but more ants kept getting dragged in and pressed against them, blocking each other's movements. Even those that managed to move were hindered by other ants trying to do the same.In no time, a huge cluster of Big Ants had formed around the arrow."Here I go! Flame Javelin!"Fiene finished her chant, formin
