The rain arrived without mercy; it lashed against the city like a thousand tiny whips, drumming on rooftops, splashing across windshields, and turning the sidewalks into shimmering rivers of gray.

People hurried beneath their umbrellas, desperate to escape the relentless storm.

Fred Harris ran straight through it as rainwater soaked his shirt until it clung tightly to his lean frame. His worn dress shoes slapped against the flooded pavement, sending icy water over his ankles with every step, yet he refused to slow down.

His left hand shielded a small bouquet of white lilies beneath his jacket, while his right remained buried inside his pocket, gripping a velvet ring box so tightly that his knuckles ached.

For three long years, he had skipped lunches, accepted endless overtime shifts, and saved every spare dollar he could find. Every sacrifice had been made for one purpose, and tonight was supposed to make all of it worthwhile.

His phone buzzed.

Chloe: Where are you? Ethan reserved the private room.

Despite the exhaustion weighing on his body, Fred smiled as he read the message.

"Just a few more minutes," he murmured.

He pictured Chloe pretending to be irritated before breaking into laughter, teasing him for always arriving at the last possible moment.

He could already imagine the surprise that would spread across her face when he knelt before her and opened the ring box; the image was enough to push aside the burning ache in his legs and keep him moving forward.

At the end of the street, the restaurant finally came into view.

Its golden lights glowed warmly through the curtain of rain like a welcoming beacon. Luxury cars lined the curb, their polished bodies reflecting the city's dazzling lights, while uniformed attendants greeted elegantly dressed guests beneath a crimson awning.

Fred slowed to catch his breath before glancing down at himself.

His inexpensive navy suit had become damp despite his efforts to protect it from the storm. The sleeves were badly wrinkled, and one cuff still carried a faint ink stain from the office printer he had repaired earlier that afternoon.

"Not exactly Prince Charming," he muttered with a weary smile.

Even so, Chloe had always insisted that she admired his determination far more than expensive clothes or flashy success. He wanted to believe that her words were true.

Taking a steadying breath, Fred crossed the street.

As he approached the restaurant's floor-to-ceiling windows, laughter drifted through the glass. One familiar voice rose above the others, and the instant he recognized Chloe's laugh, his smile widened with quiet relief.

Then his smile vanished, and she wasn't sitting alone.

Across from her sat a sharply dressed man wearing a charcoal suit tailored so perfectly that it appeared sculpted to his body. A platinum watch caught the light each time he lifted his wineglass, flashing with effortless wealth and confidence.

Fred recognized him immediately.

It was Ethan, the youngest executive at Cross Global Holdings, a man whose name appeared regularly in business magazines and financial headlines. Ethan was the kind of billionaire who seemed to have everything the world could offer.

A knot formed in Fred's stomach. Perhaps it was only a business meeting. Perhaps Chloe had simply forgotten to explain why Ethan would be there.

But before that hopeful thought could take root, it was shattered with the next thing he saw.

Ethan reached across the table and gently brushed a loose strand of hair behind Chloe's ear.

She smiled in response. It wasn't the polite smile she offered strangers, nor the awkward smile of someone caught in an uncomfortable situation. Instead, her expression softened with unmistakable warmth and affection.

Fred felt his pulse falter. He stood motionless outside the restaurant as the bustling city around him faded into the background. The only thing that existed was the scene unfolding beyond the glass.

Then Ethan leaned forward.

Chloe met him halfway without the slightest hesitation, and their lips touched in a slow, intimate kiss.

The bouquet slipped from Fred's numb fingers, and the white lilies scattered across the rain-soaked pavement, their delicate petals crushed beneath the falling rain.

For several agonizing heartbeats, Fred could neither hear the storm nor feel the bitter cold soaking his clothes. Even the simple act of breathing seemed impossible.

Only moments earlier, he had been rehearsing the proposal he intended to give the woman he loved, but in the span of a single kiss, every dream he had spent three years building collapsed into painful ruin.

The restaurant doors swung open.

A doorman looked down at the scattered flowers before lifting his gaze toward Fred with quiet concern.

"Sir?"

Fred offered no response; his eyes never left Chloe; she finally noticed him standing outside.

Her face showed no panic, and there was no trace of guilt in her expression. Instead, she closed her eyes for the briefest moment, looking almost relieved that the truth no longer had to remain hidden.

Ethan followed her gaze toward the entrance.

A confident smile spread across his face as though he had been expecting this moment all along. Without breaking eye contact with Fred, he casually slipped one arm around Chloe's waist and drew her a little closer.

The gesture was slow and deliberate. It wasn't merely an embrace. It was a declaration of possession, a silent challenge, and an unmistakable invitation for Fred to witness exactly where he stood.

Fred swallowed hard.

Every instinct urged him to turn around before the last fragments of his dignity were stripped away. Common sense told him to leave, to disappear into the rain, and to pretend none of this had ever happened.

Instead, he reached for the door and pushed it open as warm air rushed over his soaked body, and conversations gradually softened throughout the elegant dining room.

One by one, curious diners lifted their heads to stare at the drenched young man who had walked into one of the city's most exclusive restaurants without an umbrella and with heartbreak written plainly across his face.

Water dripped steadily from his clothes and pooled beneath his shoes as he walked forward.

Each step felt heavier than the last, while the pounding of his heartbeat echoed through his ears like a war drum. His eyes remained fixed on the private table where the woman he loved sat comfortably beside another man.

Neither Chloe nor Ethan made any attempt to stand and greet him.

The storm outside was already beginning to fade, but the storm waiting inside had only just begun.
