Fred stopped beside the table. For a long moment, no one spoke.

The soft melody of a piano drifted through the restaurant, sounding absurdly cheerful against the heavy silence that settled over the three of them. Crystal glasses sparkled beneath golden chandeliers, and the rich aroma of expensive wine lingered in the air.

The elegant dining room suddenly felt like a stage, and Fred realized with painful clarity that he had unknowingly stepped into the role of the evening's fool.

His rain-soaked clothes clung to his body, while droplets of water slid from his sleeves and splashed onto the polished marble floor. He looked at Chloe; she had changed.

Not physically. She was still the woman whose smile had carried him through countless difficult days, but something far more important had disappeared from her eyes. The warmth he had always relied on had simply vanished.

When he finally spoke, his voice came out much quieter than he had expected. "Chloe... what is this?"

She held his gaze for only a moment before letting out a slow breath. "It's exactly what it looks like."

Her words struck him with more force than any slap ever could.

Fred searched her face desperately, hoping to find even the smallest sign that this was some terrible misunderstanding. He wanted to believe it was a cruel joke, a misunderstanding, or anything that could explain what he had just witnessed.

Instead, she calmly folded her hands on the table, looking as though they were discussing nothing more important than tomorrow's weather.

"You said you were meeting a client," Fred said.

"I did," she replied without hesitation.

"So... was that a lie?" Fred asked.

"No." She tilted her head toward Ethan. "I was meeting him."

Fred felt his stomach twist into a painful knot.

Across the table, Ethan lazily swirled the wine inside his glass before taking an unhurried sip. His expression carried the effortless confidence of a man who had spent his entire life getting everything he wanted and had rarely, if ever, heard the word "no."

"So," Ethan said casually, "you're Fred."

Fred ignored him completely; his attention remained fixed on Chloe.

"You told me..." His throat tightened as he struggled to speak. "You told me tonight was important."

"It is." Her answer came without the slightest hesitation. "I just didn't tell you why."

Almost without thinking, Fred slipped his hand into his pocket until his fingers brushed against the velvet ring box.

Three years of overtime, three years of skipped meals, three years of believing he was slowly building a future for the woman he loved.

The small box suddenly felt unbearably heavy in his hand, carrying the weight of every dream he had poured into it. "I was going to ask you to marry me."

For the first time that evening, Chloe's calm expression cracked; the change lasted only an instant before she looked away. "You shouldn't have."

Fred stared at her in disbelief. "You knew?"

"I had a feeling," she said, looking away like it wasn't important

"And you still..." he ended the statement halfway as he took a deep breath.

She already understood the message, so she nodded slowly. "Yes."

The silence that followed became almost impossible to endure.

Conversations at nearby tables gradually faded as diners pretended to focus on their meals while secretly watching every word.

A waiter slowed his pace with a serving tray in his hands, a couple at the next table leaned closer without realizing it, and even the pianist softened his performance as though he sensed the emotional collision unfolding inside the room.

Ethan finally set his wineglass onto the table. "I think we've dragged this out long enough."

He smiled at Fred, but there was nothing friendly about the expression. It was the satisfied smile of a man who thoroughly enjoyed winning. "You must be the delivery boy she mentioned."

A few uneasy laughs escaped from nearby tables.

Fred's jaw tightened. "I'm not—"

"Oh?" Ethan slowly looked him up and down. "My mistake, I assumed anyone wearing a suit like that was here to deliver something."

Another ripple of uncomfortable laughter spread through the restaurant.

Fred felt his ears burn with humiliation. Part of him wanted to shout, another part wanted to throw a punch and wipe that smug smile from Ethan's face.

Instead, he remained perfectly still; his restraint only seemed to amuse Ethan even more.

"You know," Ethan continued, "I almost admire your determination."

"You actually believed you could compete."

Fred finally looked him in the eyes. "This isn't a competition."

Ethan chuckled. "It always was."

He casually slipped an arm around Chloe's shoulders before pulling her comfortably against his side. "This world is simple; the person with more value wins."

Fred slowly turned his gaze back to Chloe. "You agree with him?"

She remained silent for several seconds before answering.

"I've spent years worrying about rent," she said quietly. "I've watched you work yourself to exhaustion. You missed birthdays, anniversaries, and countless moments because you were always chasing another overtime shift. Every time I asked when things would get better, you promised they eventually would."

She lowered her eyes to the table. "But they never did."

Fred felt his chest tighten. "I was trying."

"I know," she said, like she was about to feel sorry.

Fred took a step forward with tears dripping down his chin. "I did everything I could."

"I know," Chloe said without remorse.

His voice finally cracked beneath the weight of his heartbreak. "Then why?"

Chloe lifted her eyes and met his once again. There was sadness in them. There was understanding, but there was no regret. "Love doesn't pay bills, Fred."

The sentence echoed through his mind with devastating clarity. It sounded exactly like the kind of nightmare he had never imagined hearing from the woman he loved.

"I was tired of surviving," she continued quietly. "I wanted to live."

She reached up and touched the simple silver pendant resting against her neck.

Fred recognized it instantly. It was the first gift he had ever bought for her, and he remembered spending weeks saving enough money just to afford something so modest.

Slowly, she unclasped the necklace. For one impossible moment, he convinced himself that she was merely adjusting it. Instead, she laid it gently on the table before pushing it toward him. "Keep your cheap gifts."

The pendant slid across the polished surface until it stopped only inches from his trembling hand. At that moment, something deep inside him quietly shattered.

Fred picked up the necklace, not because it held any financial value, but because every scratch and every inch of silver carried memories that money could never replace.

He remembered celebrating birthdays inside their tiny apartment with instant noodles because neither of them could afford cake.

He remembered walking home together late at night because taxi fare was a luxury they couldn't justify. He even remembered laughing together in the rain because buying umbrellas meant sacrificing tomorrow's lunch.

Had those memories truly meant nothing to her?

His voice fell to barely more than a whisper. "Was any of it real?"

The question lingered heavily between them. Even Ethan remained silent.

Chloe closed her eyes for a brief moment before answering. "Not after I met a real man."

Her words were calm, precise, and utterly merciless.

Fred felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath his feet. He slowly removed the velvet ring box from his pocket and opened it.

The diamond caught the restaurant lights, scattering brilliant reflections across the room. Several diners gasped softly.

Chloe's eyes widened, and for the briefest instant, she looked genuinely surprised. Perhaps she even felt a flicker of conflict.

The moment passed almost as quickly as it had appeared.

Fred quietly closed the ring box again. "I guess," he said with a faint, exhausted smile, "I was too late."

He slipped the box back into his pocket. He didn't shout. He didn't beg. He didn't cry. Instead, he accepted the unbearable weight of the moment in silence before turning toward the exit.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

Behind him, conversations slowly resumed as diners returned to their meals, treating the most painful moment of his life as though it had been nothing more than an unexpected interruption to dinner.

Outside, the heavy rain had faded into a cold drizzle, but Fred barely noticed.

His fists remained clenched so tightly that his fingernails pierced his palms, and warm blood slowly trickled between his fingers. Still, he kept walking.

He had no idea where he was going. He only knew that if he stopped moving, he might never find the strength to start again.

The city lights blurred through the tears gathering in his eyes, and every breath sent another wave of pain through his chest.

In a single night, he had lost the woman he loved, the future he had spent years imagining, and the last fragile piece of hope he had carried through countless sacrifices.

Then his phone vibrated. The sound broke through his thoughts. He almost ignored it, but after a moment's hesitation, he pulled the phone from his pocket.

Unknown Number.

His brow furrowed as he tapped the message open, and three simple words appeared on the screen. "Congratulations."

Fred frowned in confusion; almost immediately, another message appeared.

"Today was the worst day of your life."

His pulse quickened. Before he could make sense of those words, a third notification flashed across the screen. "Tomorrow changes everything."

A cold breeze swept through the nearly deserted street as Fred slowly lifted his head. For the briefest moment, an unsettling feeling crept over him, making him think that someone was watching from somewhere beyond the glow of the city's lights.

He quickly looked around, but the street was empty, and Nothing moved except the steady rain that continued to fall beneath the night sky.
