Chapter 6: Clearing a bit of the misunderstanding

"Divorce..."

"Divorce..."

The two of them spoke at almost the same time.

Once they realized they both said the same thing, they went silent and waited for the other to speak.

A few seconds later, Alfred Lucas spoke first.

"Jennifer, think about it. Yesterday's talk about divorce was mostly from Elon Mu pushing the idea. Please think it through again. I really didn’t cheat on you."

Hearing this, Jennifer Zhao blushed a little and tucked her hair behind her ear.

"I was too emotional yesterday. After going through everything we have, if I ask for a divorce over just one misunderstanding, then I really did overreact."

Even though Jennifer still didn’t believe Alfred had been discussing investment with someone from the Benson Group, she was sure he wasn’t the kind of man to cheat. As for what he was actually doing with that woman, she assumed it had something to do with his failed project again.

While they were still talking, Jennifer Zhao's phone buzzed.

She looked down and saw it was her mother calling.

"Hello, Jennifer. Last night, did you and Elon Mu..."

"Mom, please stop talking nonsense."

"Haha, I understand. You’re an adult now. There’s no need to be shy."

Jennifer let out a deep breath. "Never mind. What do you actually want to say?"

Her mother's voice continued on the phone, but Jennifer was already feeling helpless.

A few moments later, the call ended. She looked at Alfred sitting on the sofa and said, "Let’s go home."

Alfred frowned a bit. "I don't have a home. What do you mean?"

Jennifer let out a small sigh. "I mean our house. Just tell them I got drunk with Elon Mu last night and you came to pick me up."

After that, the two of them hailed a taxi and returned home.

At the house, Linda Su was in a good mood. As soon as she heard the door open, she shouted from inside.

"Jennifer, let me tell you. Last night, Alfred Lucas didn’t come back. He must have run away from embarrassment. That man is already—"

"Mom, what are you even saying. It doesn't make sense does it?"

Jennifer stepped inside. As Linda was speaking, she suddenly saw Alfred Lucas behind her daughter.

Her smile dropped instantly.

Seeing Alfred, Linda’s face darkened.

"Why are you pestering Jennifer again?"

"Mom, Elon Mu got me drunk last night. Alfred came and picked me up," Jennifer said plainly.

Linda glared at her and pointed at Alfred. Her voice rose as her anger boiled over.

"You. You’re just a problem! You don’t know when to act or when to stay away. Who told you to pick them up? The two of them were drinking fine. Why did you even bother going there, you bringer of bad luck!"

Jennifer stood still, shocked. Looking at her mother, she suddenly felt very tired.

What exactly was going on in her mother's mind?

"It was me. I drank too much last night," Jennifer said, her voice low. "Alfred and I checked into a hotel. Nothing else happened."

She looked directly at her mother now.

"Mom, stop trying to push things. I’m not divorcing Alfred. And stop hoping something will happen between me and Elon Mu."

Without waiting for a response, Jennifer turned and walked back to her room, her steps full of frustration.

Alfred didn’t say a word to Linda. He simply changed his shoes, stepped inside, and went straight to the bathroom.

When Alfred Lucas came out of the bathroom, he noticed that the door to Jennifer Zhao’s room was open.

Jennifer was sitting in front of her computer, staring at an email. It was a repayment notice from the bank.

The Zhao family owned a small company. After Jennifer graduated, she started managing parts of the business. Recently, she had taken out a large loan for a project, but things didn’t go as planned, and now the cash flow was tight.

As Alfred looked at the amount and the due date on the screen, he started thinking quietly.

"When did you learn to peek?" Jennifer suddenly noticed him and quickly closed the email.

"I was just passing by. I saw it by accident," Alfred replied. "Have you figured out how to solve the money problem?"

Jennifer let out a small laugh.

"Do you have any good ideas? Even if I told you, it wouldn’t help. Why bother asking? You’re just stressing yourself."

"I care about you," Alfred said calmly.

Jennifer paused. She didn’t expect that answer. Then she shook her head and sighed.

"If you really care, then go out and find a job. Earn your own money. Help with the house if you can. That would mean more to me than anything else."

"I will," Alfred said.

Just a day ago, he wouldn’t have said that with such confidence. But now, his tone was firm.

"You will?" Jennifer repeated, with a bitter smile. "Alfred Lucas, if you stopped chasing that silly project of yours, maybe the house would feel a bit more peaceful."

"I..."

Alfred was about to respond, but he was interrupted by the sudden voice of Linda Su.

"Jennifer, I’ve already told Elon Mu about your money issue. He said he can help you. One million. Look, he just replied."

She walked in while speaking and held out her phone, showing the message on the screen.

"No, Mom. Why would you do that? Are you even close to Elon Mu? Why would you ask him for help?"

Jennifer’s face turned pale with anger.

Linda didn’t look sorry at all.

"I don’t care how close you are. But listen to me. If a man is willing to give you money, it doesn’t mean he truly loves you. But if a man can’t even help you with money, then one thing is clear. He doesn’t love you at all."

While she spoke, she rolled her eyes and shot a look of pure disgust at Alfred Lucas.
