Chapter 7: Going for Interview

"I'll figure something out. You don't need to ask Elon Mu for help. Elon Mu... never mind. You just wouldn’t understand," Jennifer Zhao said with a sigh.

She walked over to her vanity and applied light makeup, getting ready to leave.

But when she reached the front door, she was surprised to see Alfred Lucas already there, wearing a clean shirt and proper shoes.

"You..." Jennifer Zhao looked at him with confusion.

"Going for an interview," Alfred Lucas replied casually, though it was a lie.

"An interview? Which company? I can drive you there," Jennifer said, feeling a slight warmth in her heart.

She thought Alfred was finally serious about starting work. If this was true, then maybe their home life would improve and things would slowly return to peace.

"I’m heading to a recruitment meeting on the west side of the city. I’ll just go check things out first," Alfred said calmly.

Jennifer nodded. She wanted to believe him. Even though she wasn’t sure yet, she told herself not to rush. If Alfred was finally making a move to improve himself, then she would support it. Take it slow. One step at a time.

On the way to the recruitment venue, Jennifer gave Alfred plenty of advice.

She explained how to pick a proper job, how to answer interview questions, and how to talk about his strengths and weaknesses when facing the company’s HR team.

When they reached the recruitment venue on the west side of the city, Jennifer waved him off and then drove to her own company.

There was still a huge pile of work waiting for her, and even if she worked overtime till midnight, she might not be able to finish everything.

Back at the recruitment venue—

As soon as Alfred Lucas got out of the car, another car pulled up. It was Mr. Feng.

He glanced briefly at the old summer car Alfred had arrived in, then got out.

"What’s the situation now?" he asked.

"Let’s just say things are better than before. Still a work in progress," Alfred said.

Mr. Feng walked over and patted him on the shoulder.

"Did you tell her about the investment?"

"Yes, I did. But she doesn’t believe a word of it. Let’s not push it. I’m just here to take a look at the recruitment," Alfred replied.

The two of them walked into the recruitment event together. But Alfred wasn’t here to look for a job. He came to recruit others.

He had already reached an agreement with Manager Destiny. The funds were about to be transferred soon. But in order to bring his project to life, he needed the right team.

"Alright, keep an eye on things here. I’ll go look for an office space and talk to Manager Destiny again," Mr. Feng said before walking off.

After saying goodbye to Mr. Feng, Alfred began walking around the nearby office buildings to look for a place to rent.

He checked several spots, but none of them felt right.

Eventually, he ended up near a fast food restaurant. Feeling a bit hungry, he stepped closer, planning to grab lunch.

Just then, a loud car horn sounded behind him.

It was Elon Mu.

"Haha, look at you, poor guy. You came here to eat fast food? Do you really call this human food?" Elon Mu said, looking Alfred Lucas up and down with a mocking smile.

Alfred turned away with an annoyed face, ready to leave.

"Alfred Lucas, let me tell you something," Elon said loudly behind him. "I’ve already prepared the money that Jennifer Zhao’s company needs. Not a lot, just eight hundred thousand. I’ll be asking her out tonight to talk. Do you want me to record a video for you to watch later?"

Alfred stopped and turned around.

"I admire your mother," he said coldly. "Now get out of here."

He wondered how someone like Jennifer’s mother could know such a shameless man.

Elon Mu laughed, shook his head, and left with a sneer.

Even after Elon left, Alfred still felt heavy in his heart.

Eight hundred thousand was no small amount. It was a real problem for Jennifer. If she could not repay the bank on time, the damage to her business and credit would be serious.

Thinking of that, Alfred took out his phone and called her.

"Jennifer, I just saw Elon Mu. He said—"

Before he could finish, Jennifer interrupted him.

"The company needs eight hundred thousand. If I don’t fix this, the bank will come down on me hard. My mom already asked Elon for help, and he’s agreed to meet me tonight to talk. If I can’t find another way, I’ll have to use his money to cover it."

Alfred felt his throat tighten. "No, wait. Eight hundred thousand... I... I..."

"You? What about you?" Jennifer snapped. "Don’t get involved in things you can’t handle. If you had the ability, I wouldn’t have to carry the weight of the company by myself, would I?"

With that, she ended the call.

Alfred stared at his phone for a moment, then sighed and dialed another number.

It was Manager Destiny.

Half an hour later, they met at a nearby café.

"Mr. Lin, what’s the matter?" Manager Destiny asked as he sat down. He glanced at his watch like he had something else scheduled.

Alfred cleared his throat. It was hard to speak, but time was tight.

"Manager Destiny, I wanted to discuss something with you. It’s about the money."

"Money?" Destiny raised an eyebrow. "We already signed the financing agreement. The capital has been approved. What do you mean by bringing it up again now?"

Alfred gave a bitter smile.

"I know. But I need an extra eight hundred thousand. And... I hope the funds can be made available today."

Destiny paused, his expression unreadable. Then he raised his hand slightly.

"Hold on."

He took out his phone and made a call.

"The meeting this afternoon is cancelled. I don’t know when it will be rescheduled."

After hanging up, he placed his phone on the table and looked directly at Alfred.

"Mr. Lin, you should understand something. Even though I’m in charge of this deal, you changing terms the day after signing the agreement does make me question your reliability."

Alfred nodded calmly. "I understand."

Destiny crossed his arms and sat back.

"I’m willing to hear your explanation. But if you can’t give a solid one, then I may have to consider ending our cooperation."

But since the eight hundred thousand dollars borrowed in Jennifer’s name had not been used for her company, Alfred decided it could be allocated for something practical. This was not embezzlement after all it was for w
