2026-03-18 11:03:10'Should I run?' He sat at the edge of his bed clutching to his sword as the candle flickered threatening to go out, he turned to the door as the sound of cheers rose up the stairs from the first floor filling the corridor.
'How can they still be celebrating?' He sighed hoping their noise could distract him from the question that plagued him all night yet their noise couldn't distract him from his grim reality.
"Tap.tap.tap"
The floor faintly creaked as he kept tapping his foot on the floor 'should I run?'
"Tap...tap....tap.."
The taping seemed to slowly down as he rubbed the dark circles under his eyes, He was only fifteen yet it seemed his life could end if he didn't leave soon.
'The knights haven't arrived' he rose from the bed moving the sword to his hip and turning to the door 'the captain will have to forgive me, I didn't become a mercenary to die'
'Why should I die for a Kingdom that barely cares about me? And with people I've only known for a year' he took a deep breaths grabbing the rusted silver round door handle 'I'll say I'm going to pee then leave'
He opened the door and in an instant shut his eyes as the bright light that filled the corridor pierced his eyes, he had been up all night in a dim room wandering to answer the duke's call.
Less than a day ago the duke summoned all mercenaries in his territory to face the demons that stood at the countries border, killing a few low rank demons wasn't an issue for Vex but.
He smirked as he thought about how his captain cheered when he heard about the rewards.
'There is no way those arrogant fucks would give us all of that, unless they knew we wouldn't be alive to claim it' his pace quickened toward the stairs, he had to leave before the knights could arrive.
The promis of wealth that great made it blatantly clear that the rumours were true, for a while now the surge of strong demons around the territory had fueled the rumours that one of the demonking generals was near the territory but now, Vex was certain.
The stairs creaked at his every step 'any mercenary that abandons a mission given by the kingdom will be branded a traitor and hunted down'
'I'd rather become a criminal and live than die here' He put a smile on his face as his feet touched the first floor 'act normal'
The smell of beer filled the air as people laughed and cheered.
"Yo Vex you up?!" a familiar voice called out to him but Vex didn't bother to look back as he responded "yeah Dex!"
"Im going to take a leak!" He yelled with a smile plastered on his face as he moved across the floor filled with drunks "I'll be back!"
"Ok man!" Dex yelled from the bar as Vex grabbed the door 'sorry Dex but this is the last time we will ever meet'
He pulled the handle then!
"Where are you going?" A tall muscular figures spoke but the sight of the captain wasn't what froze his muscles on sport, no he could always lie to him. It was the armoured figures that stood behind him.
'Seven!' His eyes twitched as he looked at them 'why are seven knights here?'
He took a step back and spoke with that smile of his "I'm going to take leak captain"
The captain stepped into the bar "you'll pee on the way its time to move"
'Fuck' despite failing to leave his smile never wavered, he couldn't afford to show any discontent when several knight stood this close to him.
