THE CURSE
The ward was tense, the air thick with unease. The young lady lay on the bed, her breathing steady but her eyes still closed. Ethan stood by the window, his golden eyes fixed on her. Samantha standing beside him shifted uncomfortably, her curiosity getting the better of her. “Why hasn’t she woken up yet?” she asked, her voice low but insistent. “You said your blood would heal her. It clearly worked, her body is stronger now. So why is she still unconscious?” “Are we going to wait a little bit? She is taking a lot of time to wake up. What is going on, Sir Siegfried?” She mumbled, her voice hinted with fear and concern. Ethan didn’t look at her. His gaze remained on the young lady, his expression thoughtful. “Her body is healed,” he said slowly, “but her spirit is still trapped. She’s been cursed. My blood can cleanse the physical ailments, but it cannot break the hold of the curse on her mind.” Samantha’s eyes widened. “A curse? Who would do such a thing? Why would someone place a curse on such a young lady?” She questioned, glancing over at the lady once more. Before Ethan could answer, the door to the ward swung open. The suitor strode out, looking at Ethan with disdainful demeanor. “You should come and see how a doctor can operate on a patient and not like your barbaric method. The doctor is a psychic master and very soon, my fiance is going to wake up from that coma!” With a smug grin on his face, he muttered. Ethan didn't say anything. He was disappointed at how foolish and ignorant he was. Ethan shifted his gaze at the doctor, now revealed to be a self-proclaimed psychic master—was dressed in elaborate robes adorned with symbols and charms. He carried a bag filled with what looked like exorcism tools: candles, incense, talismans, and vials of mysterious liquids. Nico Wharton looked smug, as if he had just won a great victory. “This is Master Cho, a great miracle doctor from Old Town County. He is very popular, he has treated many of these cases and everything was successful.” he announced, gesturing to the psychic master. “He’s an expert in treating mysterious diseases. He’ll wake my fiance up very soon.” Ethan’s eyes narrowed, but he said nothing. He watched as Master Cho set up his tools around the young lady’s bed, arranging them in a precise pattern. The psychic master lit the candles and incense, filling the room with a heavy, cloying scent. He began to chant, his voice low and rhythmic, the words unintelligible but carrying an eerie weight. At first, nothing happened. Then, slowly, the young lady’s breathing began to change. It became rapid and shallow, her chest rising and falling in quick, uneven bursts. Her fingers twitched, and her face contorted as if she were in pain. The heart monitor beeped frantically, its lines jumping erratically. Nico walked back into the room and the smug expression faltered instantly at what was going on. “What’s happening?” he demanded, his voice tinged with panic. “Why is she breathing heavily and her lip turning black all of a sudden?” Master Cho didn’t answer. He continued chanting, his voice growing louder and more urgent. But the young lady’s condition only worsened. Her skin turned pale, and her lips took on a black tint. The heart monitor’s beeps became slower, more sporadic. Ethan couldn't take it any longer. He couldn't watch the young lady fall into more danger. He stepped forward, his eyes blazing. “Stop,” he said, his voice firm and commanding. “You’re making it worse. You are endangering her life.” Master Cho ignored him, his chanting growing more frantic. Ethan turned to Nico Wharton. “Your so-called spiritual doctor is aggravating the curse. If you don’t stop him, she will die.” Nico Wharton hesitated, his face pale. He was confused. “But he’s an expert. He knows what he’s doing.” “Does he?” Ethan shot back. “Look at her. She’s fading.” Nico Wharton glanced at his fiancee, his confidence crumbling. He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could, the heart monitor let out a long, flat tone. The young lady’s body went still, her chest no longer rising and falling. The room fell silent, the weight of the moment pressing down on everyone. “What is going on? Why does the heart monitor stop? Wake her up right now!” Nico Wharton shouted at the top of his lungs, his voice trembling. Tears welling up in his eyes. Matthew, the housekeeper, who had been standing quietly in the corner, stepped forward, his face etched with desperation. “Sir Siegfried,” he said, his voice trembling, “Please. You have to save her. You’re the only one who can.” Also Samantha fell on her knees and begged, “Sir Siegfried, you have to help the lady! You are the only one that can save her!” Nico Wharton also slumped to the ground. "Please, don't let my fiance die! She is all I've got. Anything you want, I'm going to give it to you! Just name it!” He mumbled, his face filled with tears. Ethan hesitated. He had already done what he could—his blood had healed her body, but the curse was beyond his current abilities. He thought back to the dragon blood, the power it had awakened within him. If he could harness that power, perhaps he could break the curse. “I’ll try,” he said finally. “But I can’t promise anything.” The housekeeper, Samantha, and Nico Wharton nodded, relief and hope flickering in their eyes. “Thank you so much! There is nothing you can't do! I'm certainly sure you are going to wake her up!” Nico Wharton mumbled instantly, walking towards Ethan. He held his hands, and said. "I put my trust in you! Give it a try!” Samantha and the housekeeper stared at Nico Wharton in awe. They are marvelled by his change of attitude. Was he not accusing Ethan some minutes ago? What went wrong? Ethan put on a smile, “Sure, I will try,” then he walked towards the lady on the bed.
