THE WAYLAY

With a deep sigh, Ethan collected the phone and walked out of the room to receive the call. He pressed the phone pressed to his ear and uttered,

“Hello, why are you disturbing me, Celine?" His voice tinged with annoyance.

On the other end, his wife’s voice was sharp and furious, each word dripping with anger and accusation.

“You miscreant, where have you been? I have been trying to reach you but to no avail. Do you switch off your phone because of me? Are you trying to make me angry?”

Ethan chuckled at his wife's irate words. He totally forgot he had thrown his phone out of the helicopter earlier. The reason she could get through to him.

 “I found the woman’s contact information through the helicopter that had taken him away.

Who the fuçk is that woman? Why is a helicopter here because of you?” Celine demanded,

“I don't think you need to be concerned about that. We are not together anymore, you don't deserve to know anything!” Ethan mumbled.

Celine was fuming over the phone, she never expected to speak to her in that manner.

“You’re a coward, Ethan,” she spat, her voice trembling with rage. “You can’t even face reality. You attacked my mother and brother, and then you ran away like a shameful child.

You couldn't wait because you are embarrassed for beating up my mother. How dare you lay your hands on my mother?

Beating up my brother to stupor, you are a shameless being. How dare you lay your hand on Logan? Have you forgotten how delicate and fragile he is?

You cowered in fear and couldn't stand up to your actions.”

Ethan listened in silence, his expression calm but his golden eyes glowing faintly. He didn’t interrupt her, didn’t try to defend himself.

When she finally paused, he spoke, his voice steady and measured.

“The truth isn’t always what it seems,” he said. “Sometimes, what you hear isn’t the whole story. You’ll need to discover the truth for yourself.”

“Everything your brother and mother told you isn't the truth. They are all lying against me. Instead of proving myself innocent or arguing with you about the issue, you discover it yourself and realize how wrong you and your people are." He said, his voice rising a little bit.

His wife hesitated, her anger faltering for a moment. There was a flicker of doubt in her voice when she spoke again.

“Are you trying to tell me my mother is lying to me, Ethan? Anyways, I didn't call you because of that.” She blurted out.

“Why did you call them?" Ethan asked.

“You didn’t sign the divorce agreement before you left. We need to settle this. Meet me at the Annex Court tomorrow at noon. Don’t be late.”

Ethan didn’t argue. “I’ll be there,” he said simply.

The call went limp instantly, and Ethan slipped the phone back into his pocket. He stood there for a moment, his mind racing.

 He knew his wife was angry, but he also knew that her anger was rooted in misunderstanding.

She didn’t know about his new found ability, identity and about the dragon blood. And since she's trying to divorce him, there was no point in trying to explain.

Meanwhile, in the hospital, Celine stood outside her brother’s room, her hand still gripping her phone. She had come to visit him, to check on his condition after the incident at the lobby.

She never wanted to believe Ethan, her husband, had done any of this but the injury inflicted on his brother and mother's body convinced her all they said about Ethan was nothing but the truth.

As she approached the door, she overheard a conversation between her brother and mother.

“Such things have never happened before. I really stabbed him in the chest but he didn't feel any pain.

He became even more stronger, mother! That's really strange and mysterious! That bastard carried me like I weighed nothing in his hand.”  Logan seethed angrily.

Celine's mother, Mrs Henderson was surprised also, “That bastard is truly a wizard. You need to see how his eyes were blazing with fire! I haven't seen such a thing before."

They were discussing the details of what had happened. How her brother had stabbed Ethan in the chest, then he had overpowered him, and how he had left without further conflict.

Her heart sank as the realization dawned on her. She had been so quick to blame her husband, so quick to believe the worst of him.

But now, knowing the truth, she felt a pang of regret. Had she been too harsh? Did she mistrust him?

She pushed the door open and stepped inside, her brother lying in bed with a bandage wrapped around his ribs. He looked up at her, his expression a mix of anger and defiance. “Sis,” he said, his voice weak.

“Can you see the injuries your useless husband inflicted on me? I'm going to make sure he regrets touching me?” He grumbled.

Celine didn't say anything at that moment. Instead, she did the unthinkable.

Slap!

Slap!!

Celine flew her hand unto his brother's face and slapped him very hard on the cheek. The force pushed Logan's face to the bed.

He held his cheek and flared dangerously at his sister. He was surprised at her actions. He didn't know what he had done to warrant such heavy slaps from her.

Mrs Henderson was also stunned. Why would she slap her younger brother like that?

“What are you doing? What has gotten over you? Why would you lay your hand on your younger brother?” She uttered furiously.

Celine didn't bother answering her mother, her gaze was on Logan. She yelled at the top of her voice, "How dare you?”

“How dare you try to stab Ethan? What do you really think you're doing? Do you want him dead?" She burst out angrily, her mind still reeling from what she had heard.

“Do. You really want to stab Ethan? Are you serious, Logan?"

Her brother hesitated, then looked away. “I… I lost my temper,” he admitted. “I thought he was trying to hurt Mom. I didn’t mean to stab him, but it just happened.”

Celine's heart ached as she listened. She had been so quick to side with her family, so quick to believe that her husband was the villain. But now, she wasn’t so sure.

She didn't even know what to say anymore. She walked out of the ward, her heart heavy with pain.

~~~
Meanwhile, Ethan and the young lady were on the road, heading to the residence she had arranged for him as part of her appreciation. The car ride was quiet, the tension between them palpable.
The young lady known as Rebecca Grant glanced at him occasionally, her expression a mix of gratitude and curiosity. She had so many questions, but she didn’t know where to start.
“Thank you,” she said finally, breaking the silence. “For everything. I don’t know how to repay you.”
Ethan shook his head. “You don’t need to repay me,” he said. “Just stay safe. Whoever cursed you is still out there, and they won’t stop until they finish what they started.”
She nodded, her expression serious. “I’ll be careful. But… What about you? What will you do now?”
Before he could answer, the car came to a sudden stop. The driver cursed under his breath, his hands tightening on the wheel. “What the hell?” he muttered.
“What is going on? Why do you stop?" Rebecca questioned.
Ethan looked up, his golden eyes narrowing. Ahead of them, two massive oil tankers were blocking the road, their hulking forms completely obstructing the way.
Before anyone could react, a group of street gang members emerged from the tankers, each one armed with a baseball bat. They surrounded the car, their faces twisted with malice and contempt.
The driver turned to Ethan, his face pale. “What do we do?” he asked, his voice trembling.
“How are we going to face these people? They are very dangerous! What are we going to do?"
 The young lady said, and watched them move closer to the car, her heart pounding heavily in her chest.
    Ethan's fingers trembled as he gripped its cold, metallic edge on the man's face with all of his power. He had expected resistance—some mechanical lock or invisible force—but this was different. The mask breathed. It pulsed faintly against his touch, like a second skin bound by will, not metal. He was astounded at this revelation, and he wondered how possible this could be. He tried pulling with all his strength again, but he wasn't successful. The mask was like a rock that couldn't be pulled easily from its position. A thrum of dark energy rippled through the air as if something ancient coiled within the villain’s flesh, guarding his identity like a venomous sentinel.“This isn’t just an ordinary mask,” Ethan muttered to himself. “It's something more! Something I can't even explain!" Before he could process it further, Rebecca grabbed his arm and pulled him aside, her grip firm. Her usually composed face was tight with fear and worries. Ethan, fazed by her actions, snatched his
    "What are you waiting for? Get out! You don't deserve me anyways, you are just useless!” She spat disparagingly. “Okay then, I hope you don't regret your decision, Celine!" He muttered, his heart heavy with hurt and disappointment. With that, he opened the door and stepped out into the hallway, leaving behind the life he had once known. As soon as Ethan walked out of the office, the secretary approached Celine, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder."Don't worry," he said. "Your future husband will be someone extraordinary. Ethan, a man in his early thirties with sharp features and a calm demeanor, sat behind his mahogany desk. His fingers tapped lightly on the polished surface as he held the phone to his ear. The voice on the other end was tense, almost anxious."How is our deal going?" Ethan asked, his tone steady but laced with authority and power. There was a brief pause before the voice replied, "We agreed before that we would help your wife's company go public, and you would give me what we need, right?"Ethan leaned back in his chair, his eyes narrowing slightly.
