Marcus looked around, expecting to see three Demon Lords who looked just as terrifying as Vyrella. He didn't even know what Demon Lords were supposed to look like, but judging by the woman standing before him, he wasn't interested in finding out.
"Do they look exactly like you?" he asked, glancing at her.
Vyrella gave him an angry look. "This is not the time for your stupid jokes. I can't tell who they are yet, but whoever is coming knows about the damaged chain. That means they're not ordinary people."
Marcus was still confused. He had barely managed to convince her to give him seven days before cutting his head off, and now some other people were coming to finish the job.
"Wait." Vyrella looked toward the entrance as the markings on her wrist changed. "Now I know who they are." Her expression turned ugly. "The people you sold me to. Wonderful. You've really outdone yourself this time, Lucien."
She turned around and started walking away.
"What? You can't just leave!" Marcus hurried after her. "You just said they're coming for me. What if they kill me? What happens to you then?"
Vyrella stopped and slowly turned around. "Wait, Lucien. Did you think I agreed to keep you alive because I wanted to stay by your side?"
Wasn't that the most logical thing? But fuck logic. Marcus hadn't experienced anything reasonable since he arrived in this world.
"You want them to kill me?"
"I'm not responsible for saving you! Do you understand that?" she snapped.
She turned to leave again, but Marcus ran after her. For a brief moment, he noticed that he was moving faster than he ever could on Earth. Unfortunately, that wasn't going to be much help against people who could probably kill him with one finger.
He hurried in front of her. "Listen, what do you—"
"Just because I agreed to give you seven days doesn't mean I agreed to serve you. I don't have to obey every stupid order you give me!"
Marcus swallowed. This woman really hated Lucien. He couldn't even blame her anymore.
"If I die now, how long will you have to wait before you get another chance at freedom?"
"You manipulative bastard!" Vyrella hissed. "Good luck dying, then!"
She disappeared into the shadows between two ruined pillars.
Marcus stood there, stunned.
Shit!
He had three Demon Lords waiting to collect debts he knew nothing about, some dangerous people were coming to kill him, and the only person he had managed to negotiate with had just abandoned him.
How the fuck do I get back to Earth?
"Lucien Veyr!"
A friendly voice suddenly called from behind him.
Marcus turned around.
A tall man dressed in expensive purple robes was approaching with four armed men. He had neatly combed silver hair, a pointed beard, and a smile that made Marcus uncomfortable. He looked like the kind of man who could convince someone to sign a terrible deal while making it sound like a favour.
"How can I help you?" Marcus asked, keeping his face calm.
"Oh, you know exactly how you can help me, my friend." The man laughed. "The demon maiden you sold me never arrived at my estate. It's been an entire week, and I haven't even laid eyes on her. I came to find out what happened."
Marcus glanced at the men surrounding him. Dark green liquid dripped from their fingers, burning tiny holes wherever it touched the ground.
Wonderful. Even their hands are poisonous.
"So you're here to collect her?"
"Don't put it that way!" The man laughed again. "But yes, of course. I paid for her, didn't I? If she's being stubborn, my men can collect her themselves. You won't have to lift a finger."
He signalled to his guards.
"By the way, we should have wine together this evening. I acquired five new mistresses yesterday. Perhaps you'd enjoy watching them bathe in the courtyard."
"Stop." For once, Marcus appreciated how offended his new voice sounded.
The guards stopped immediately.
The man raised an eyebrow. "You weren't the one who prevented her from coming to me after taking my money, were you?"
Marcus ignored the question.
"Vyrella!" he called. "Come here."
He had no idea whether she was still nearby, but if those people could detect her chain, she couldn't have gone too far.
Vyrella was hiding among the ruined pillars. She had considered leaving him to his fate, but the thought of waiting for Lucien to return after weeks of dying made her stomach turn. She had already endured that once.
When she heard him calling her, she almost laughed.
Of course. Here comes another order.
Still, she stepped out of the shadows, determined to see what nonsense he was planning.
"Do you want to go with him?" Marcus asked.
Vyrella stared at him. "What?"
"I'm asking whether you want to follow this man."
"No!"
"Well, you heard her." Marcus turned toward the smiling stranger. "You can leave now, Lord..." He paused. "Remind me of your name."
The man's smile disappeared.
"Lord Corven Vareth," he said coldly. "And you'd better remember that the next time you address me."
"Wonderful. Lord Corven, I think you should leave."
Corven stared at him. "I paid you for that demon!"
"I'll return whatever you paid. Now go while I'm still being nice."
Vyrella looked at Marcus in disbelief.
"Return his money?" she repeated. "With what? The money you lost gambling? Or the money you spent on those women you brought home?"
Marcus felt his stomach sink.
What kind of useless bastard was this Lucien?
"You hypocrite!" Vyrella continued. "You arranged this, didn't you? You brought these men here so you could pretend to defend me, and then I'd trust you enough to go along with another of your stupid plans!"
"What? No, I—"
"I should have killed you when I had the chance!"
Corven shook his head impatiently. He had been conducting this kind of business long enough to recognize what he believed was a staged disagreement. Lucien had taken his money, failed to deliver the demon, and was now pretending to defend her.
"Enough of this nonsense!" he snapped. "Deal with him. By the time you're finished, he'll be begging me to take her away."
The guards began approaching Marcus. Their teeth lengthened into sharp fangs, and the poisonous liquid dripping from their hands grew thicker.
Marcus looked toward Vyrella, but she merely folded her arms and stepped back.
She had no intention of interfering.
In fact, she was almost looking forward to watching the performance. Lucien Veyr was Level 200. Even with his damaged body, he should have enough power to crush these guards without much effort.
If this was another trick, he could have chosen better actors.
Marcus, meanwhile, was struggling to breathe normally.
I'm dead.
The guards were getting closer, and he had absolutely no idea how to fight them. Worse, the one woman who could help him was standing there watching as though she had paid for a seat.
He glanced at Corven, desperately searching for something he could say to stop the attack.
But before he could open his mouth, one of the approaching guards suddenly stopped.
"My lord!"
Corven frowned. "What?"
The guard was staring at Marcus. A strange green light flickered across his eyes.
"Something isn't right!"

Marcus finally managed to get himself a proper meal. But one of the main reasons he had insisted on coming into town was because he wanted to look around. So far, he had seen several demons who looked similar to Vyrella. Some had horns, while others had strange eyes or tails. Thankfully, none of them stopped to give him a second look. That was some consolation. At least he didn't seem to owe every demon he passed on the street. He excused himself while Vyrella was eating and went to the restroom. After making sure the door was locked, he called up his status screen.[STATUS]Name: Lucien VeyrLevel: 1Class: None (Hollow)STR: 8 | SPD: 9 | MIND: 14 | WILL: 12Marcus ran a hand through his hair."Still Level 1? How the fuck do you even grow this thing?"Back on Earth, all the games he played had rules for levelling up. You fought enemies, completed missions, and gained experience."At least that fight with those three bastards should have counted for something!"As though responding to

Marcus had said they would eat in town, so they left the ruins and left Selene and Dren lying where they had fallen.Vyrella walked three steps behind him. She told herself she was only following to see what he was planning. It had nothing to do with the fact that, for the first time in two years, someone was actually going to feed her.She had put a sword through this man’s shoulder that morning. And now he was walking ahead of her, with his back turned, like it didn’t even matter.Idiot, she thought, If I wanted him dead, he would be dead.Halfway down the road, her wrist started to burn. She glanced down. The black mark beneath the cracked chain, the one that had barely been visible before, was crawling up her arm like ink spreading in water.No. Not now, she panicked.Marcus looked back at that exact moment. She tried to hide her hand, but he grabbed her wrist before she could.“What is this?”“Nothing.” She jerked her hand away. “I’m perfectly fine.”“Your arm is turning black, a

Two weeks before Lucien's death, he had called Selene aside and handed her a sealed envelope."I'm going to die soon. Keep this safe," he said, taking another drag from his cigarette."Why are you dying this time? And what about the Vault?" Selene asked."Don't question me. And don't bother opening it. Only the person it's meant for can read it.""Then why give it to me?""Because I said so."He walked away. Selene slipped the letter into her pocket and eventually forgot about it. Lucien's strange behavior had never been worth trying to understand.Only as she lost consciousness under Vyrella's attack did she remember the envelope. Then everything went dark.\\###Marcus stared at the letter in his hands.Marcus Hale. That was his name. His real name! What kind of fucking coincidence was this?He tore open the envelope and unfolded the paper inside.Marcus, if you're reading this, then I was right. You finally made it here.— Lucien Veyr.Marcus frowned. Before he could decide what to

"You can't kill my master while I'm standing here," she hissed. She raised her hand and released a spell of her own. The magic Selene had gathered shattered before it could reach Marcus."He already gave you three days to get whatever nonsense you're looking for. But apparently, you're all too stupid to understand that."Marcus looked toward her in disbelief. She's helping me?He wasn't about to question his luck.Garrick was still approaching from behind, while Dren moved to attack Vyrella. Selene was already trying to prepare another spell.Marcus noticed a cracked pillar between Garrick and the two women. An idea came to him."I was hoping you'd kill me, Garrick!" he shouted. "But you're all talk. How disappointing!"Garrick turned toward him, furious.Marcus hurried behind the damaged pillar."Come out, you bastard!""Come and get me!"Garrick swung his sword with all his strength. The blade struck the weakened pillar, and a terrible crack echoed through the ruins.Marcus threw hi

Selene hurried forward to grab Garrick's arm. They all knew Lucien, and whatever was wrong with him, he was still the last person anyone wanted to fight."I could have been wrong, Garrick. Don't take it too far.""Stay away, woman!" Garrick snapped, raising his sword.Marcus still thought it was some kind of joke. Back on Earth, he and his friends used to threaten to kill one another whenever they argued. Nobody actually meant it."Come on, man—"Garrick swung.Marcus tried to move, but he was too slow. The sword went straight into his stomach."ARGHH!"He staggered backward, clutching the weapon. Blood spilled down his clothes as Garrick pulled it out, but before Marcus could even understand what had happened, the wound began closing.Within seconds, the wound closed, leaving a scar. The pain was still there, sharp enough to make him dizzy.Selene stared at him. So did the others.Fuck!Marcus's heart almost stopped. Chapter 4
"My lord, something isn't right!" one of the guards shouted."I don't want to hear anything! Deal with him!" Corven snapped."My lord, the demon maiden is already claimed by another Lord! We can't even approach her!""I don't care! Move!"The guards tried again, but the closer they got to Vyrella, the harder it became to move. An invisible force pushed against them, growing stronger with every step. One of the guards staggered backward. "There's another mark beneath her chain, my lord. Someone else has already claimed her!"Marcus looked between them in confusion. What the hell was going on now? From the expressions on Corven's and Vyrella's faces, he was certain it wasn't anything good."Wonderful, Lucien. You've really outdone yourself this time." Corven shook his head in disbelief. "You sold her to another Lord? After collecting all that money from me? I want my money and every woman I gave you returned immediately, or you find a way to hand her over!"Corven stepped closer to exam
