"My lord, something isn't right!" one of the guards shouted.

"I don't want to hear anything! Deal with him!" Corven snapped.

"My lord, the demon maiden is already claimed by another Lord! We can't even approach her!"

"I don't care! Move!"

The guards tried again, but the closer they got to Vyrella, the harder it became to move. An invisible force pushed against them, growing stronger with every step.

One of the guards staggered backward. "There's another mark beneath her chain, my lord. Someone else has already claimed her!"

Marcus looked between them in confusion. What the hell was going on now? From the expressions on Corven's and Vyrella's faces, he was certain it wasn't anything good.

"Wonderful, Lucien. You've really outdone yourself this time." Corven shook his head in disbelief. "You sold her to another Lord? After collecting all that money from me? I want my money and every woman I gave you returned immediately, or you find a way to hand her over!"

Corven stepped closer to examine the mark beneath Vyrella's cracked chain. It was black, with strange markings he couldn't recognize.

That worried him.

If he couldn't identify the mark, there was no telling how powerful its owner was. For all he knew, Lucien had sold the demon to someone far above his rank.

"Stand down," he ordered his guards.

Marcus watched them retreat. He had no idea what he was supposed to do now. Apparently, Lucien had sold the same demon woman to two different people. The audacity alone was frightening.

"I expect an explanation!" Corven snapped. "Why did you sell her to someone else after taking my money?"

Marcus noticed something interesting. The man was angry, but he was no longer trying to attack him. In fact, he seemed afraid of the strange mark.

And if that was the only advantage Marcus had, he was going to use it.

"I have no interest in explaining anything to you," he replied coldly, even though his heart was doing backflips. "You came here and embarrassed me when you could have invited me to your courtyard, and we would have discussed this over a few drinks."

Corven stared at him. "You—"

"I don't want to speak to you right now. Leave, and think about how you've broken my trust."

Marcus almost laughed at himself. Broken my trust? What the fuck am I even saying?

But whoever Lucien had been, he apparently sounded exactly like the kind of man who would say something that arrogant.

Corven took a step backward.

"I'll bring someone who can identify that mark," he warned. "And you'd better have my money ready before I return."

He turned and hurried away with his guards.

Marcus finally released the breath he'd been holding. Had he really escaped death for the second time today? One touch from those poisonous guards could have finished him!

Unfortunately, Vyrella was already approaching him.

"Who is it?" she demanded.

Marcus turned toward her. "Who is who?"

"The other Lord! Who did you sell me to?"

"I have no idea."

Vyrella scoffed. "Of course you don't." She nodded bitterly. "Seven days, Lucien. Don't forget that."

She turned and walked away.

Marcus watched her go, feeling miserable. All he wanted was to return to Earth and continue his boring life. He had barely spent an hour in this world, yet he had already made enough enemies to last a lifetime.

And the only person who seemed to know anything about Lucien hated him too much to explain anything!

He was seriously considering sitting on the ground and screaming when three people approached him.

"Lord Lucien!"

Marcus turned toward the cheerful voice.

A broad-shouldered man with short brown hair was walking toward him, smiling. Beside him was a woman with silver hair and a handsome, quiet-looking man dressed in dark leather.

Marcus immediately became suspicious. The last person who had smiled at him almost got him killed.

Not another one.

"What is it this time?" he asked tiredly.

"I told Selene you'd be back today!" the broad-shouldered man laughed. "You usually show up again about two weeks after you die."

Marcus froze.

Two weeks?

The woman smiled and moved closer. "I really missed you, Lucien. I was beginning to think you wouldn't come back this time."

"Man, that woman you introduced me to was a complete lunatic," the third man complained. "She made me massage her back every morning. Every single morning!"

The others laughed.

Marcus forced himself to smile.

Okay. These people know Lucien.

And from the way they were talking, they were probably close to him. That meant they might know things he desperately needed to learn.

"Let's go to my house," he suggested.

Selene chuckled. "Which house? You sold it before you died. Said you weren't going to leave such a valuable property sitting around while you were dead."

He sold his house too?!

"You really knew your demon maid was going to kill you," the broad-shouldered man said, laughing. "It's almost frightening how you always know when you're about to die."

Marcus was beginning to understand why everyone hated Lucien.

"Then let's go to yours," he said, turning toward Selene. "We have things to discuss."

The three exchanged surprised looks.

Lucien had never willingly visited any of their homes. They weren't even genuine friends. They only maintained their relationship because they occasionally needed one another.

And Lucien knew that.

Why was he suddenly acting as though they were close?

"Hold on." The broad-shouldered man suddenly looked toward the ruined pillars. "What are you doing hiding over there?"

Vyrella stepped out of the shadows.

"Garrick, don't talk to me!" she snapped.

"I thought you left?" Marcus asked, frowning. "Come along. We're going to Selene's house. You must be hungry."

Garrick frowned.

Since when did Lucien care whether his demon women were hungry? He had always treated them like treasures he collected after battles, not people who needed food and rest.

Vyrella looked equally suspicious, but she said nothing.

"Lucien, let's settle something first," the man in dark leather interrupted. His friendly expression had disappeared. "We've been waiting for you for two weeks. You should have told us where you kept it before you died. Give it to us now."

Marcus stared at him.

Give them what?

"Yes," Selene added. "It was bad enough that you entered the Vault and took it without telling us. But we're willing to forgive that. Just return it."

Marcus glanced between them.

"The Vault?" he repeated.

"Don't start this nonsense!" the man snapped. "We obtained it during our last battle, and we all agreed to keep it inside the Vault. You had no right to take it!"

Garrick folded his arms. "You think you could have gotten it without us? Who do you think you are? Our boss?"

Marcus glanced toward Vyrella, hoping she understood what they were talking about. But from the confusion on her face, she didn't seem to know anything either.

And these three bastards were doing everything possible to avoid mentioning what they actually wanted!

He needed to make them talk.

"Come on, I only just woke up after being dead for two weeks," Marcus said with a chuckle. "Can't we discuss this another time?"

"Another time?" Dren repeated angrily. "We've waited long enough!"

"Then you'll have to wait a little longer."

Selene suddenly frowned. "Guys..."

The other two turned toward her.

"Something isn't right with Lucien."

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

"What do you mean?" Garrick asked.

Selene continued studying Marcus, her expression growing more suspicious. "The Lucien I know would have attacked us by now."

Garrick slowly turned toward him.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Garrick reached into his pocket and pulled out a small knife. He flicked his wrist, and the weapon suddenly extended, transforming into a long sword.

CLANG!

The blade struck the ground.

"Alright, Lucien," Garrick said coldly. "Let's see what happened to that famous temper of yours."

Marcus finally managed to get himself a proper meal. But one of the main reasons he had insisted on coming into town was because he wanted to look around. So far, he had seen several demons who looked similar to Vyrella. Two weeks before Lucien's death, he had called Selene aside and handed her a sealed envelope."I'm going to die soon. Keep this safe," he said, taking another drag from his cigarette."Why are you dying this time? And what about the Vault?" Selene asked."Don't question me. And don't bother opening it. Only the person it's meant for can read it.""Then why give it to me?""Because I said so."He walked away. Selene slipped the letter into her pocket and eventually forgot about it.
