Henry took the lunchbox from Mrs. Mason. He wondered why she wanted him to deliver the lunchbox to her husband. She could always enter the company; after all, her husband was the CEO.

He saw a strange look on her face. It was as if she had a fight with someone, or maybe she mistakenly fell on the floor.

Henry threw the thought away as he entered the warehouse back. Why should he be worried about other people's problems, especially rich people? Right now, he needed money to feed his family and to enroll in the Mage Academy. That was all that mattered to him now, not somebody else's problems.

Henry opened the door without knocking, and he immediately regretted it.

His eyes shot up as he saw the scene before him. Lilly, his co-worker, was sitting on Mr. Mason's lap, and they were kissing.

His entrance stopped them, and Lilly quickly retraced her movement, but Henry saw it all. She stared at him with frightened eyes and quickly escaped through the door.

Mr. Mason's bloodshot eyes met Henry's, wondering what to say to the kid for ruining his blossoming fantasy.

“Leave.”

He finally said something with a cold yet calm voice.

Henry quickly obeyed. He hurried out of the room and headed to his duty post at once. The scene was still fresh in his head, and his heart was pounding heavily. He couldn't believe what he had just witnessed. He didn't blame Lilly. She came from a family much poorer than his, and she hadn't awakened any magical elements, in a world where magic was almost everything.

Having magic alone guaranteed a stable life and a chance to become one of the wealthiest people in the world, if wealth was the target.

For someone like her who hadn't awakened any elements, it was normal for her to take this path to success. He only wished that he hadn't witnessed the scene.

He knew what was coming next. Mr. Mason was definitely going to fire him. If he was lucky enough, he would only be threatened.

Henry prayed for the second. He didn't want to lose this job. If he lost this job, he wouldn't be able to enter the Mage Academy, and his family's future depended on it.

Being a mage was the fastest way to become rich. Entering the Mage School was free for everyone who had awakened their elements, but people of lower class had to pay to enter. The school took them as a burden and had more responsibilities to cater to.

If he lost his job, he wouldn't be able to afford the academy fees, and that would mean the end of the world for him.

Henry continued to think about his future when somebody tapped him on his shoulder.

“Henry.”

He gazed back, seeing it was his best friend, Jeremy. He quickly hoped it wasn't Mr. Mason calling, and it turned out to be exactly that.

“Mr. Mason wants you in his office,” Jeremy muttered.

“I think it's about that promotion. Congratulations, Henry. Your dreams will finally come true.”

Henry managed to pull a fake smile. If only Jeremy knew what the call was about. He was expecting a promotion, but that certainly wasn't the case now, was it? He was about to embrace his worst nightmare.

He got to Mr. Mason's office and knocked thrice on the door before Mr. Mason finally granted him permission to enter.

Henry entered with a straight posture, not daring to meet Mr. Mason in the eyes. His gaze quickly dropped to the ground.

Mr. Mason didn't waste time. He simply looked at Henry.

“Henry, you are fired. I don't want to see you in this company again. And no paycheck for you this month.”

Henry quickly collapsed to his knees before Mr. Mason finished speaking.

“Please, sir, I swear I won't tell anyone. I won't dare. I swear.”

Mr. Mason paused to look at Henry. Henry got this job through his wife's recommendation. His wife was a close friend of Henry's mother. How then could he trust somebody like that? Besides, this wasn't how he intended to keep this a secret.

“You can leave when you're done with this rubbish you are doing.”

Henry's heart missed a beat when he heard that. He tried to process the words, but he couldn't. His dreams were scattering to pieces, and there was nothing he could do.

What was he going to tell his parents? They had placed all their hopes on him. He needed that money.

“Sir, I have awakened my magical element. My wages are for the academy fees. I really need the money. I swear I won't tell anyone. This is how important this job is to me.”

Henry was shivering on the floor, stating how important the job was to him. He believed Mr. Mason would pity him. What did it matter if Mr. Mason was cheating on his wife? Mr. Mason was rich, while he needed to work to feed his family.

Seeing that Mr. Mason was silent, Henry believed he must have been thinking about his judgment earlier. He was not only good at his job, he was an awakener. His power would be used for the benefit of society and Cherry City as a whole.

Awakeners were treated specially by everyone.

Mr. Mason paused because he had never thought Henry was an awakener. He pushed his head forward to look at the watch Henry was wearing. The Mage class detector watch was used to state the class and element a person awakened.

His cheeks tightened as he saw what Henry's watch was displaying. Mr. Mason burst out laughing when he couldn't hold it anymore. Henry was surprised by the laughter, but Mr. Mason's next words confirmed everything.

“You call yourself an awakener? Have you ever heard of anybody with an E rank class before? The lowest in the world is C rank, and you just awakened an E rank class, and you are calling yourself a mage!”

Mr. Mason's mocking laughter followed.

“What a fool you are, to think you can become a real mage. If I were you, I would have killed myself already. Loser!”

Henry was speechless. Although he knew his rank was the lowest the world had ever recorded, his element was fire.

Fire was the rarest element.

“I awakened fire, sir. Fire—”

Mr. Mason's mocking laughter shut Henry off quickly. He couldn't believe the boy's words. A C ranked fire mage would barely scratch a monster, let alone an E ranked mage.

This boy must be delusional to think he could really become a mage.

“You are a waste. Your birth is useless to this world and to Cherry City as well. Now leave before I kick you out.”

Henry wanted to speak when the door burst open and some hefty men entered.

“Take this waste product out of here!” Mr. Mason screamed at them.

The hefty men grabbed Henry and threw him out of the company.

Henry couldn't go home. He didn't know what to tell his parents. They would be heartbroken when they found out he had lost his job. He waited for closing hour before he slowly strolled home.

He had always been subjected to mockery and bullying. Even the non-awakeners mocked him as well. They believed he was a waste product and useless to the mage society.

Nobody had ever awakened an E rank before. It was the lowest rank ever recorded. He was the first, and yet he believed he could become a good mage. That was their favorite line to mock him.

Henry believed that if he entered the academy, he would surely become a good mage, but that dream had just ended today.

He was a few blocks away from home when a group of men jumped out of the darkness.

Their faces were deadly, and Henry recognized them immediately. They were the hefty men from Mr. Mason's office. He wondered why they were blocking his way.

“What do you want?”

Their leader stepped forward and displayed his class detector watch. It was a wristwatch that detected the magical class and elemental power of an awakener. The man was a C ranked earth mage.

“Mr. Mason wants you dead.”

Henry's heart skipped at the words. He stepped backward, fear gripping his heart.

“No… no.”

Henry tried to speak but ended up falling on his back. He pleaded the moment he fell.

“I won't tell anyone. I swear I won't.”

The man chuckled, hearing the boy's new tone.

“Orders are orders, and they must be followed. And by the way, Mr. Mason is helping Cherry City remove the shame of having an E ranked mage.”

Henry lost control of himself. Fear took over everything. He bowed his head on the ground, crying.

“Please don't kill me. My family is poor. My sister needs money for her treatment. I am the only one… they depend on me… please, I am too important to my family.”

The leader squatted in front of Henry and whispered,

“Run.”

Henry got up and ran, but before he could take three steps, a heavy blow brought him to the ground.

A rock ball fell beside Henry. The man stretched his hand forward, and the rock ball moved toward him.

He received it with a smile, then shaped it into a baseball bat.

Henry coughed blood. He tried to crawl away, but his body refused to move. The impact had rendered him useless.

The boss and his men reached him with beaming looks on their faces. They hammered their bats on his body.

Henry was helpless on the ground. This was how his life had always been, only that he would die this time.

Even though he was an awakener, he was just like a normal human. Those ones were even better than him.

Henry's breath grew heavy, his eyes slowly closed, and his heart became still. This was the end of his worthless life.

Everybody was right about him. He was useless to the end.

His sister's face flashed before his eyes as they closed. He forgot that today was his eighteenth birthday. There was nothing to celebrate anyway.

At eighteen, he died.

She subconsciously stepped backwards in fear, and an evil smile crept onto Diego's face.He said as he slowly approached Lora.“There is no need to step backwards, little lamb. There is nowhere you can run to that I can't run to as well. I know you are afraid of dying, but that was your fate the moment you were born as a human being. If you were born as monster, that would've been different. You would've been strong and immune to death.Your friend over there fought a good fight, but he still ended up dying.”Diego stopped approaching and continued.“Monsters do die, so you don't think am not being obvious of the hundreds of monsters that have died on this very ground, but just as hundreds of monsters have died on this floor, over a million humans have died on this ground as well.So you can see that the numbers are not worth an argument. The monsters that fell into the hands of humans are simply the ones that couldn't work

To her Helen had developed into something else.Something that scattered all her ideology and calculation about humans to the ground.“There is no way I am giving up in this lifetime!”Helen coughed out a mouthful of blood as she took a different stance from the one she took when she stood up.“Water control: a million slashes!”Immediately Helen triggered the skill, the whole surroundings started experiencing a shock wave, that even Ava subconsciously stepped backwards out of fear.
