Silence fell over the room once again.

But not the same silence as before. Not the kind born from shock. This silence had a different texture. Hot, tense, like the air right before lightning strikes.

And the one who broke it was Megan.

Megan took a step forward, staring at Lein with a look that no longer bothered hiding anything. Her fingers were a little stiff around her wine glass.

"I don't know where you dug up this trash, Sera." Her voice was sharp and cold. "But are you seriously going to marry him? This man has a big mouth and doesn't know his place. Get him out of here before I throw up just looking at him."

Lein didn't answer right away.

His eyes dropped, stopping on the necklace around Megan's neck. A white gold chain with a diamond-encrusted cross pendant, sparkling under the room's lights.

He studied it for two seconds.

Then his lips moved.

"Trash, you said." His tone was flat, but there was something in it that felt like a knife just drawn from its sheath. "What an interesting choice of words from someone wearing an Eternal Cross from the House of Veyron around her neck tonight."

Megan blinked.

A few people in the room turned to look. Eternal Cross, House of Veyron. Everyone there tonight knew that name. A limited-edition necklace worth a serious fortune, twenty-one million dollars apiece, and Megan had worn it to several family events over the past two months. She'd even called it a "personal investment" in front of the lifestyle reporters covering last month's gala dinner.

"But there's a small problem," Lein continued, his voice neither rising nor falling. As calm as someone reading a weather report. "A genuine Eternal Cross uses hand engraving on the back of the pendant. The original artisan's signature is carved at a depth of zero point two millimeters. It can't be cast, and it can't be faked by machine." He nodded slightly at the necklace. "The one around your neck tonight doesn't have that signature. I'm sure of it. The chain's wrong too. House of Veyron uses a cable chain with a diameter of one point two millimeters. Yours is thinner, around zero point eight, and the color is too bright for eighteen-karat white gold." He paused for a moment. "It's a replica. If you had it appraised at an ordinary shop, it probably wouldn't even fetch a thousand dollars."

The room went silent as a grave.

Every eye shifted to Megan.

They wanted to know if what the man said was true, but Megan's face had already answered for her.

It turned red. Not red like anger. Red like someone who had just been humiliated in front of the entire family and had no idea where to run.

Because that was exactly what had happened.

Megan's necklace really was a fake. She'd bought it for less than 900 dollars, from an experienced replica craftsman who had made sure it looked almost identical to the real thing.

And everyone she'd met had fallen for it.

But how the hell did this beggar know?!

A few very long seconds passed.

Lara turned to her mother with an expression that was trying very hard not to look panicked. Angela was suddenly very interested in the contents of her glass. Meanwhile, Megan's husband, Gerard, quietly cleared his throat.

Megan drew a breath, and when she opened her mouth, her voice no longer carried its usual confidence.

"What the fuck would you know about Veyron, you bastard?!" she snapped, her face turning even redder. "There's no way a bum like you can tell the real thing from a fake! Everything you just said is complete bullshit!"

But no one laughed this time.

Because it was too specific to be bullshit.

One point two millimeters. Zero point eight millimeters. Details like that couldn't just be made up on the spot. And everyone in the room was secretly thinking the same thing:

This man was right.

Megan then turned to Sera, her eyes flashing.

"Sera! As your aunt, I'm telling you to throw this bastard out of this house right now, before he humiliates the Caldwell family even more!"

"That's a great idea!" Arthur stepped forward, his voice booming. "What are you waiting for?! Throw him out!"

But no order came out of Sera's mouth.

Arthur stared at her for a moment, then ground his teeth.

Fine. If Sera wasn't going to do anything, he'd do it himself.

Arthur didn't know who this bum was. Didn't know where he came from or what he wanted. But one thing was clear tonight: as long as this man stood beside Sera, she wouldn't be easy to control. Sera had always been stubborn enough as it was. With this loudmouth by her side, things would only get harder.

On top of that, they already had a husband lined up for Sera in case the assassination plan failed.

And since the assassination plan had failed, this man had to go. Now.

Arthur strode forward, closing in on Lein with impatient steps. His hand shot up, grabbed the collar of that wrinkled shirt, and gripped it tight.

Then he pulled.

Or tried to pull.

But the man's body didn't budge.

Arthur frowned. He pulled again, harder.

Same result. Nothing happened.

It was like pulling on a concrete pillar planted three meters into the ground, or trying to shove a wall.

The shirt collar was in his hand, his grip hadn't slipped, but the man in front of him stood in the exact same spot like he didn't feel a thing.

He didn't even turn his head.

Wh... what the hell is going on?

Arthur pulled one more time, this time with everything he had, until the veins in his neck bulged.

"Sera."Tristan turned his head without lowering his raised hand. His voice went soft again, like someone coaxing a child away from a fire."Step back. This is the guy who wants to marry you, right?" His smile was thin. "Then please, don't get involved just yet. Let him prove he's worthy right here. If he really deserves to stand beside you, he'll make it through this."Sera opened her mouth. She wanted to say something. Maybe to refuse, maybe to warn him, but before a single word came out, her eyes met Lein's.He turned his head slightly toward her and smiled.A small, easy smile, like someone about to step out to grab some tea. His eyes said one thing very clearly: I'll be fine.Sera looked at him for a moment. Then nodded slowly. She stepped back a few paces, leaving plenty of space in the middle of the hall.Lein turned to face forward again. Ten huge men stood in a half circle in front of him, their shadows falling across the marble floor like a moving wall. He looked at them one

"You only see what's on the outside, Tristan."Sera's voice wasn't loud, but it was sharp enough to make the smile on Tristan's face slip a little."That's the only thing you ever see, and that's exactly why you'll never understand." Sera took a step to the side, standing shoulder to shoulder with Lein. "Lein is a good man. He promised to protect me. And I trust him."A moment of silence. Then Tristan laughed.Quietly at first, like someone trying to hold it in. But the longer it went on, the more it broke loose, until his shoulders were shaking and he had to press a palm to his chest to catch his breath."Protect you?" He wiped the corner of his eye with a fingertip. "*Him?*"His index finger rose, pointing at Lein without even looking."Sera, Sera, Sera. Listen to me." His tone softened again, full of fake patience. "I know the people from the other branches of the Caldwell family want your fortune. That's no secret. That's exactly why I'm here today, offering to protect you. The Ka

The front doors of the Caldwell estate were wide open. In the doorway stood a man whose presence seemed deliberately designed to fill the room. He was about 185 centimeters tall. His brown hair was slicked neatly back, not a single strand daring to stray out of place. Thin-framed glasses sat on his sharp nose, giving him a polished, intelligent look. The dark gray suit he wore wrapped his athletic build in a perfect cut, broad shoulders, slim waist, not a single wrinkle in sight. He was handsome. His smile was warm. His posture was upright and confident. In short, he looked like the kind of guy any mother would want to set her daughter up with. In his hands was a massive bouquet of white and pink roses, at least a hundred stems. Behind him stood five maids in matching, neatly pressed cream uniforms. Each one carried a velvet-wrapped gift box tied with a perfect gold ribbon. And behind those five, ten men in black suits stood in two rows. Shoulders as wide as doorways, necks as

"You don't need to cook anything," Sera said, throwing off her blanket. "Let's head downstairs. They've already made breakfast for us."Lein nodded. "Alright."They left the bedroom and went down the stairs to the ground floor. The corridors of the Caldwell estate were full of busy staff. Some were carrying laundry baskets, some were wiping down the stair railings, some were straightening vases in the corners of the hallway. All of them were working diligently. But not a single one of them greeted her.A young maid passed them at a corner. She just stepped aside, eyes fixed straight ahead, then went back to her work as if what had just walked by was nothing but a breeze. Two other maids near the living room door didn't even turn their heads. No respectful nods. No "good morning, Young Miss."Lein glanced at Sera. She walked with her back straight and her face blank, as if nothing about this was strange at all. She's not bothered, Lein thought. Or more accurately, she's too used to it

Sunlight poured in all at once. Wide and bright, it hit Sera square in the face without warning the moment the curtains were pulled aside. Sera scrunched her forehead, squeezing her eyes shut tighter before finally giving up and slowly opening them. It took a few seconds for her vision to adjust, for the shapes in the room to come into focus. The open window. Morning light slanting in. And Lein, standing there with his hand still on the curtain, looking at her with an expression that was not the least bit sorry. Sera let out a slow breath. Relief. Not because Lein was there, but because it meant everything that happened last night wasn't a dream. It was real. This man was real. And she wasn't alone anymore. But it also meant something else. Uncle Caden was really gone. Sera swallowed the feeling for a moment, let it linger, then tucked it away somewhere it wouldn't bother her until she was fully awake. "You were really out cold," Lein said, his tone light. "It's already six

Ten minutes later, the bathroom door opened.Sera turned from where she lay on the bed, half asleep, the TV remote still in her hand.Lein stood in the bathroom doorway, his hair still wet, and the only thing covering his body was a white towel wrapped low around his waist.Sera stared. And didn't stop staring right away.Because the body in front of her didn't exactly make it easy to look away.Lein's shoulders were broad but not overdone. His chest was wide and solid. His abs were cleanly defined, and not like a bodybuilder's, but like someone whose body hadn't been built in a gym, but by something far harsher than that. Not a single inch felt like too much or too little. Everything was exactly right, and perfect.Absolutely perfect.So... this guy had a body like that?Sera swallowed.Once. Silently. But it felt incredibly loud in her own throat. Her cheeks had been flushed since the very first second, and instead of getting better, they only got worse with every passing moment.Th
