"I think we both know that's a lie," Felix whispered, his face still inches from hers, their breaths mingling in the small, cramped crawlspace.
Odette didn’t shove him off. Her hands, calloused and strong, remained curled into the fabric of his shirt, pulling him just a fraction closer. The tension was thick enough to choke on, a volatile cocktail of adrenaline and something far more dangerous.
"Keep pushing your luck, flyboy," she breathed, her gaze flickering to his lips before sharpening back into her trademark lethal glare. "If you don't get us to a refueling station in the next hour, I’m going to make sure your last memory is the sensation of my boot against your spine."
Felix chuckled, a shaky, breathless sound. He rolled off her, the movement clumsy in the confined space, and scrambled toward the access ladder. "Always the romantic, aren't you? Fine. Let’s get off this hunk of junk and find a fuel pump before the ship decides to spontaneously combust."
They didn't speak as they descended into the main hangar of Ophiuchus Station, a grim, rusted rock orbiting a dying nebula. It was the kind of place where people went to disappear, which made it perfect—provided you didn't mind the smell of ozone and desperation.
"Remember the plan," Odette muttered, tugging her oversized scavenger cloak tighter around her lithe frame, obscuring the deadly lines of her bodysuit. "We’re a couple of bored, broke, and blissfully ignorant traders. You’re the idiot. I’m the irritable partner who does all the thinking. Don't deviate."
Felix scoffed, adjusting his jacket. "The 'idiot' part is a bit harsh, don't you think?"
"It’s the most convincing part of the act, Felix. Try to keep up."
They moved into the dimly lit corridor of the outpost, the air thick with the scent of recycled oxygen and cheap synthetic oils. Felix tried to adopt a casual saunter, hooking an arm around Odette’s waist. She stiffened, her hand dropping instinctively to the hilt of a hidden blade, but she didn't push him away.
"You’re doing it again," she hissed through gritted teeth. "Too much pressure. You’re holding me like a tactical objective, not a date."
"Well, you’re built like a tactical objective," he muttered, trying to keep his voice light as they passed a group of surly-looking locals. "I’m improvising."
"You’re a hazard to our survival," she retorted, leaning into his side with a deceptively sweet smile that didn't reach her predatory eyes.
They approached a docking master’s kiosk manned by a behemoth of a man with cybernetic eyes. Felix leaned against the counter, flashing his most disarming, crooked grin. "Hey there. Just looking for a quick top-up. The Rusty Pelican is running on fumes and prayers."
The man grunted, his optic sensor whirring as it scanned them. "Credits first. Outpost rates are double for unregistered hulls."
Felix’s smile faltered. "Double? Come on, friend. We’re just two honest traders looking to get to the next sector. Can’t you cut a fellow traveler some slack?"
A scarred thug lounging nearby stepped forward, spitting a stream of glowing blue tobacco onto the floor. "Hey, pretty boy. You heard the boss. Pay up or get lost. Or maybe your girlfriend here wants to earn the credits another way?"
Odette’s posture shifted, a subtle, lethal tightening of her shoulders. Felix felt the change instantly.
"Easy, honey," Felix murmured, placing a hand on her arm, though he could feel her muscles coiling like a spring. He looked back at the thug, his humor vanishing. "She’s not for sale, pal. And frankly, your breath is offensive enough to warrant a formal complaint."
The thug laughed, a dry, grating sound, and grabbed Felix by the collar. "You got a lot of mouth for someone whose ship is probably held together by duct tape."
"Hey!" Odette’s voice was like ice cracking. She stepped forward, her hand moving with a speed that defied the human eye.
"Don't—" Felix started, but it was too late.
Odette didn't use a weapon. She slammed her forehead into the thug’s nose with a sickening crunch, then spun, catching his wrist and twisting it until the bone popped. The guy shrieked, collapsing into a heap as the surrounding bar went dead silent.
"You really had to do that?" Felix asked, his voice strained. "We were almost finished with the transaction."
"He insulted me, and he bored me," Odette said, wiping a speck of blood from her cheek with cool detachment. "Now, unless you want the rest of his friends to join us, I suggest you start running."
"Right. Running. My specialty," Felix groaned.
They scrambled down a side corridor, the sound of heavy boots echoing behind them.
"This way!" Felix yelled, spotting a cargo bay door. He fumbled with the keypad, his fingers shaking. "Come on, come on, open up!"
The door hissed open, and they dove inside, slamming it shut and locking it from the inside. They scrambled over a massive, unstable stack of synthetic cargo crates.
"We’re going to get caught," Felix gasped, pulling Odette down into the narrow, dark crevice between the boxes. They were pressed tight against each other again, their heartbeats synchronized in the frantic silence.
"Not if you stop breathing so loudly," Odette whispered, her hand moving to his chest to steady him. Her touch was searing through his shirt.
Felix looked down at her, the adrenaline fading into a different, sharper heat. "You know, for a woman who keeps threatening to kill me, you’re remarkably protective of my personal space."
Odette didn't answer immediately. Her gaze lingered on his face, tracing the line of his jaw in the shadows. "Someone has to keep you alive long enough to finish the mission, Starling."
"Is that all this is?" Felix whispered, his voice dropping an octave.
She leaned in, her lips hovering mere centimeters from his. "For now."
A sharp, metallic clink interrupted them. Felix reached down, his fingers brushing against something cold and hard tucked inside the synthetic packing material. He pulled it out—a sleek, heavy, encrypted data drive, glowing with a soft, pulsing violet light.
"Odette," he murmured, his voice tight. "I don't think this was just a random cargo hold."
Odette’s eyes widened as she looked at the drive. The threat outside the door suddenly seemed very, very small. "Felix... you have no idea what you just picked up."

Chapter 10: Ghost in the Machine
"And unfortunately for us, the landlord is home, and they look like they’re about to tow us," Felix squeaked, his fingers digging into the armrests of his chair so hard his knuckles turned white."Felix, shut up. Don't even breathe," Odette whispered, her hand instantly snapping to his shoulder, her grip tightening until it was borderline painful."Breathing is kind of my favorite hobby, Odette. Along with surviving, which is currently a very distant second on my priority list!""They haven't spotted us yet," she hissed, her eyes darting across the dead, dark monitors of the cockpit. "We're running completely cold. No engines, no life support, no active sensors. If we don't emit any thermal signatures, we might just look like a floating piece of space junk.""Space junk? I'll have you know the Rusty Pelican is a classic! A vintage masterpiece of Core-worlds engineering!" Felix protested, though he lowered his voice to a frantic whisper. "Okay, fine, it's a floating dumpster, but it's
Chapter 9: The Unresolved Horizon
"Punch it, Felix! Punch it!" Odette screamed, her fingers digging into the back of his pilot chair."I'm punching! I'm punching as hard as my fist allows!" Felix yelled back, slamming the hyperdrive lever forward just as a blinding lance of plasma scorched the Rusty Pelican's rear shields. The universe stretched into a violent violet tunnel, dragging them away from the exploding moon and the Aegis fleet. But the relief was short-lived. A low, angry hum started vibrating through the floorboards, accompanied by a heavy, sweet smell of ozone."Uh, Odette? Why is the cockpit filling with purple mist?" Felix asked, coughing as he waved his hand in front of his face. "Is the ship having a gender reveal party?""No, you absolute clown," Odette hissed, lunging toward the central console where the Black-Box Echo Drive was nestled. "The drive's containment casing is cracked. The feedback from the EMP must have ruptured the sub-harmonic seal.""Which means what, exactly? Are we growing third eye
Chapter 8: Manual Labor
"I love the honesty in this relationship," Felix whispered, his voice cracking as the last of the cabin's residual heat began to vanish into the sub-zero void of the cargo bay."Great. Now get your hands off my waist and help me figure out if this ship is officially a coffin or just a very expensive, very cold metal box," Odette replied, though she didn’t actually move. Her body was still a furnace against his chest, a stark contrast to the frost creeping up the bulkhead."I’m fairly sure it’s a coffin with a really nice sound system," Felix said, teeth beginning to chatter. He pulled back, his breath a thick plume of white. "I fried the Core-Sync, Odette. The drive is fine, but the ship’s brain is basically scrambled eggs. We’re not going anywhere without a Phase-Flux bypass."Odette stood up, her movements stiff from the cold, and pointed a gloved finger toward the jagged horizon visible through the viewport. "There. About three clicks north. You see that silhouette? The one that lo
Chapter 7: Drone Defense
"Get to the cockpit. I’ll handle the welcoming committee," Odette snapped, her voice already regaining that razor-sharp edge, though her lips were still swollen from his kisses."Can I at least put on my socks? Frostbite is a very unsexy look for me, Odette! I have a reputation to uphold!" Felix scrambled across the cargo floor, his bare feet slapping against the freezing metal."Your reputation is 'Dead Man Walking' if you don’t move! Now!" She kicked a stray drone-sensor that had poked through a gap in the hull, sending a shower of sparks over Felix’s head."Okay, okay! Moving! Why are the scary ones always so bossy after a romantic night in?" Felix ducked into the narrow corridor, fumbling with the zipper of his flight suit while hopping on one foot."I heard that, Starling! And for the record, it wasn't romantic, it was a tactical necessity!" Odette yelled back, followed by the wet shing of her blade leaving its sheath."Tactical necessity? My back has carpet burn that says otherw
Chapter 6: A Night Under the Stars
"Felix, if those things start shooting, we’re not even going to be a memory! We’re going to be a footnote in a Vultar history book titled Things We Easily Obliterated!" Felix shrieked, his hands blurring across the controls as the massive silhouettes of the Dreadnoughts loomed like jagged mountains in the purple void."Shut up and find a gravity well, Felix! Any rock, any moon, just get us out of their line of sight before they prime those cannons!" Odette roared, her hands bracing against the dashboard as the ship lurched under the weight of a distant tractor beam lock."I’m trying! I’m diving for that grey marble at eleven o’clock! Hold on to your teeth, because this is going to be a very, very 'un-smooth' landing!"The Rusty Pelican screamed as it hit the thin atmosphere of the uncharted moon. Metal groaned, sparks showered from the ceiling, and for a terrifying ten seconds, the world was nothing but vibration and Odette’s colorful cursing. With a bone-shattering thud and the sound
Chapter 5: Chasing Shadows
"Fly, Felix! Or the next thing you feel isn't going to be my heart rate—it’s going to be a torpedo!""I’m trying! My pants are literally caught in the seat hydraulics, Odette! This is not how a legendary pilot starts a high-stakes dogfight!" Felix screamed, yanking at his trousers while simultaneously slamming his fist into the engine’s 'Go Fast' button. The Rusty Pelican groaned, its engines shrieking as they kicked into an Overdrive that the manufacturer had explicitly labeled 'Suicidal.' Outside the viewport, four sleek, terrifyingly expensive-looking corporate interceptors dropped out of warp, their hulls gleaming with the cold, silver polish of the Aegis Corporation."They’re locking on!" Odette roared, sliding into the gunner’s seat. She hadn't even finished zipping her bodysuit; the fabric was pulled taut over her shoulders, but the plunging neckline still teased the skin that, seconds ago, had been pressed against Felix’s chest. "Felix, if you don't break their lock in three s
