"Felix, if those things start shooting, we’re not even going to be a memory! We’re going to be a footnote in a Vultar history book titled Things We Easily Obliterated!" Felix shrieked, his hands blurring across the controls as the massive silhouettes of the Dreadnoughts loomed like jagged mountains in the purple void.

"Shut up and find a gravity well, Felix! Any rock, any moon, just get us out of their line of sight before they prime those cannons!" Odette roared, her hands bracing against the dashboard as the ship lurched under the weight of a distant tractor beam lock.

"I’m trying! I’m diving for that grey marble at eleven o’clock! Hold on to your teeth, because this is going to be a very, very 'un-smooth' landing!"

The Rusty Pelican screamed as it hit the thin atmosphere of the uncharted moon. Metal groaned, sparks showered from the ceiling, and for a terrifying ten seconds, the world was nothing but vibration and Odette’s colorful cursing. With a bone-shattering thud and the sound of something vital snapping underneath them, the ship skidded across a frozen, rocky plain, kicking up a rooster tail of dust before finally grinding to a halt.

Silence followed. Then, the rhythmic tink-tink-tink of cooling metal.

"We’re alive," Felix wheezed, his head resting on the yoke. "I’d like to thank my flight instructor, my mother, and the sheer, dumb luck that follows idiots like me."

"Don’t start the victory lap yet," Odette snapped, though her voice was shaky. She checked a flickering monitor. "The stabilizers are sheared. The hull is intact, but the life support is wheezing. And Felix? Look at the external temp."

Felix squinted at the display. "Minus forty? That’s... that’s not ideal for my current wardrobe of a half-unzipped flight suit and sheer panic."

"The main heaters are dead. The only reason we aren't popsicles yet is the residual engine heat," she said, standing up and shivering. "We need to get to the cargo bay. It’s the only part of the ship with reinforced shielding. We can huddle there until morning."

"Huddle?" Felix followed her, his boots clanking on the freezing floor. "You mean like... together? In a 'sharing-body-heat-to-survive' trope? Because I’ve seen this holo-film, Odette, and it usually ends with someone losing a limb or catching feelings."

"If you don't shut up, I’m going to make sure you lose a limb right now," she muttered, grabbing a heavy, silver-lined thermal blanket from the emergency locker. "Inside. Now."

The cargo bay was dark, illuminated only by the faint, pulsing violet light of the data drive they’d shoved into a secure crate. The air was already crystalline with frost.

"There’s only one blanket," Felix noted, his breath coming out in thick white plumes. "And it’s barely wide enough for one professional assassin, let alone one assassin and one remarkably handsome pilot."

"Get under the damn blanket, Felix," Odette commanded, sitting down on the cold deck and pulling the thermal fabric over her shoulders. "I am freezing my tactical assets off, and your shivering is making the floor vibrate."

Felix slid under the blanket, his shoulder pressing against hers. The contact was electric. "Whoa. You’re like a furnace. Is that a mercenary thing? Do they teach you how to generate heat through sheer spite?"

"It’s called a metabolism, you moron," she hissed, but she didn't pull away. In fact, as the temperature in the bay dropped further, she leaned into him. "God, your arm is like an ice cube."

"Maybe if you didn't have so much metal armor on, you’d feel the warmth," Felix joked, though his voice was losing its playful edge. He could feel the curve of her hip against his thigh. "Wait... do you still feel it? The sync?"

Odette went still. "The neural bridge? It should have faded by now."

"It hasn't," Felix whispered. "I can feel your heart. It’s... it’s doing that thing again. That heavy, thumping rhythm. Are you scared, Odette?"

"I don't get scared," she rasped, turning her head to look at him. In the dim light, her eyes weren't cold anymore; they were liquid fire. "I get... focused."

"You’re focusing really hard on my mouth right now," Felix pointed out, his own heart hammering against his ribs. "And my brain is currently sending me a very loud signal that says 'Compatible. Extremely Compatible.'"

"It’s the drive," she whispered, her hand reaching out to steady herself against his chest. Her fingers brushed the bare skin where his shirt was still open. "It’s messing with our neurotransmitters. It’s a chemical trick."

"Is it?" Felix’s hand moved instinctively, his fingers tangling in her silver-streaked hair. "Because the drive is over there in a box, and I’m pretty sure this feeling is coming from right here."

"Felix," she warned, but her voice broke. "If you do this... if we do this... I’m still going to be a nightmare to deal with in the morning."

"I’ve been dealing with nightmares my whole life, sunshine," Felix murmured, leaning in until their foreheads touched. "I think I can handle one more."

The tension snapped like a dry twig. Odette didn't just kiss him; she claimed him with the same lethal precision she used in a fight. It was a collision of teeth and gasps, the cold of the room forgotten as the thermal blanket trapped the sudden, explosive heat between them.

"You talk too much," she breathed against his lips, her hands sliding under his flight suit, her skin searingly hot against his.

"I’m a pilot," Felix gasped, his head spinning as she pulled him down onto the makeshift bed of the blanket. "I... I need to fill the silence. But I think I can make an exception for this."

The "Harmonic Sync" flared to life again, but this time, it wasn't a military decryption. It was a feedback loop of pure, unadulterated sensation. Felix felt the arch of her back as if it were his own; he felt the desperate, sharp hunger in her mind, and she felt the overwhelming, protective warmth flooding through him.

"Felix..." she moaned, her composure shattering as he traced the line of a scar on her shoulder with his tongue. "I’m going to... I’m going to kill you if you stop."

"Not planning on it," he rasped, his hands finding the curve of her waist. "Believe it or not, I’ve been thinking about this since you threatened to carve me out of my seat in Chapter One."

"You’re an idiot," she whispered, pulling him closer until there was no space left between them.

"Yeah," he grinned, his eyes dark with a passion that surprised even him. "But I’m your idiot."

Hours later, the sun of the uncharted moon began to bleed a pale, sickly light through the cargo bay’s small viewport. Felix woke up with his arm asleep and Odette’s head resting on his chest, her hair a wild halo across his skin. For a moment, the galaxy was peaceful.

Then, a sharp, rhythmic clack-clack-clack echoed against the ship’s hull.

"Odette," Felix whispered, his eyes widening. "You hear that?"

She was awake in a heartbeat, her hand already reaching for the knife she’d discarded on the floor. "Sensors?"

Felix scrambled to a small internal monitor near the cargo lift. His face drained of color. "Uh, remember how I said the Aegis guys wouldn't find us? I was wrong. But it’s not Aegis."

"Then who is it?"

"Scavenger drones," Felix said, watching the screen as dozens of small, spindly mechanical shadows swarmed over the Rusty Pelican. "And they aren't just looking for scrap. They’re trying to cut through the cargo doors."

"Great," Odette hissed, zipping her bodysuit with a grim finality. "Looks like the honeymoon is over, Starling. Get to the cockpit. I’ll handle the welcoming committee."

"And unfortunately for us, the landlord is home, and they look like they’re about to tow us," Felix squeaked, his fingers digging into the armrests of his chair so hard his knuckles turned white."Felix, shut up. Don't even breathe," Odette whispered, her hand instantly snapping to his shoulder, her grip tightening until it was borderline painful."Breathing is kind of my favorite hobby, Odette. Along with surviving, which is currently a very distant second on my priority list!""They haven't spotted us yet," she hissed, her eyes darting across the dead, dark monitors of the cockpit. "We're running completely cold. No engines, no life support, no active sensors. If we don't emit any thermal signatures, we might just look like a floating piece of space junk.""Space junk? I'll have you know the Rusty Pelican is a classic! A vintage masterpiece of Core-worlds engineering!" Felix protested, though he lowered his voice to a frantic whisper. "Okay, fine, it's a floating dumpster, but it's

"Punch it, Felix! Punch it!" Odette screamed, her fingers digging into the back of his pilot chair."I'm punching! I'm punching as hard as my fist allows!" Felix yelled back, slamming the hyperdrive lever forward just as a blinding lance of plasma scorched the Rusty Pelican's rear shields. The universe stretched into a violent violet tunnel, dragging them away from the exploding moon and the Aegis fleet. But the relief was short-lived. A low, angry hum started vibrating through the floorboards, accompanied by a heavy, sweet smell of ozone."Uh, Odette? Why is the cockpit filling with purple mist?" Felix asked, coughing as he waved his hand in front of his face. "Is the ship having a gender reveal party?""No, you absolute clown," Odette hissed, lunging toward the central console where the Black-Box Echo Drive was nestled. "The drive's containment casing is cracked. The feedback from the EMP must have ruptured the sub-harmonic seal.""Which means what, exactly? Are we growing third eye

  • Chapter 8: Manual Labor

"I love the honesty in this relationship," Felix whispered, his voice cracking as the last of the cabin's residual heat began to vanish into the sub-zero void of the cargo bay."Great. Now get your hands off my waist and help me figure out if this ship is officially a coffin or just a very expensive, very cold metal box," Odette replied, though she didn’t actually move. Her body was still a furnace against his chest, a stark contrast to the frost creeping up the bulkhead."I’m fairly sure it’s a coffin with a really nice sound system," Felix said, teeth beginning to chatter. He pulled back, his breath a thick plume of white. "I fried the Core-Sync, Odette. The drive is fine, but the ship’s brain is basically scrambled eggs. We’re not going anywhere without a Phase-Flux bypass."Odette stood up, her movements stiff from the cold, and pointed a gloved finger toward the jagged horizon visible through the viewport. "There. About three clicks north. You see that silhouette? The one that lo

  • Chapter 7: Drone Defense

"Get to the cockpit. I’ll handle the welcoming committee," Odette snapped, her voice already regaining that razor-sharp edge, though her lips were still swollen from his kisses."Can I at least put on my socks? Frostbite is a very unsexy look for me, Odette! I have a reputation to uphold!" Felix scrambled across the cargo floor, his bare feet slapping against the freezing metal."Your reputation is 'Dead Man Walking' if you don’t move! Now!" She kicked a stray drone-sensor that had poked through a gap in the hull, sending a shower of sparks over Felix’s head."Okay, okay! Moving! Why are the scary ones always so bossy after a romantic night in?" Felix ducked into the narrow corridor, fumbling with the zipper of his flight suit while hopping on one foot."I heard that, Starling! And for the record, it wasn't romantic, it was a tactical necessity!" Odette yelled back, followed by the wet shing of her blade leaving its sheath."Tactical necessity? My back has carpet burn that says otherw

Felix screamed, yanking at his trousers while simultaneously slamming his fist into the engine’s 'Go Fast' button. The Rusty Pelican groaned, its engines shrieking as they kicked into an Overdrive that the manufacturer had explicitly labeled 'Suicidal.' Outside the viewport, four sleek, terrifyingly expensive-looking corporate interceptors dropped out of warp, their hulls gleaming with the cold, silver polish of the Aegis Corporation."They’re locking on!" Odette roared, sliding into the gunner’s seat. She hadn't even finished zipping her bodysuit; the fabric was pulled taut over her shoulders, but the plunging neckline still teased the skin that, seconds ago, had been pressed against Felix’s chest. "Felix, if you don't break their lock in three s
