"Hold on tight, Keth,” Darion grinned into the dark. “It’s about to get weird.”

“Wait, Darion, what do you mean ‘weird’? Vexel! Don’t you dare—”

“Ghost Step, activate!”

The world didn't just go dark; it went hollow. Keth’s panicked grip on Darion’s shoulder felt like it was slipping through frozen jelly. The solid floor beneath their boots softened, turning into a shimmering, frictionless void.

“Oh god, I can’t feel my legs! Darion, why can’t I feel my legs?!”

“Deep breaths, Detective! Just keep moving forward. If we stop while we’re phased, we might end up as permanent decorations in the plumbing!”

“I’m going to kill you! If I don’t die, I am literally going to kill you!”

“Less talking, more walking! One... two... and—pop!”

They burst through the outer brickwork of the precinct’s rear wall, tumbling onto the rain-slicked asphalt of the alleyway. The freezing transition snapped back into reality, leaving both men gasping as the smell of ozone and wet trash replaced the sterile scent of the holding wing. Above them, the second floor of the precinct erupted in a plume of orange flame and black smoke.

“We’re out,” Darion wheezed, pushing himself up. “See? Easy. Five stars on Yelp. Would phase through reality again.”

Keth remained on his hands and knees, retching. “You... you absolute lunatic. My atoms feel like they were put through a blender.”

“No time for a physics lesson, Keth. Look up.”

A heavy, vibrating thud echoed from the front of the building. The sound wasn't an explosion; it was the rhythmic, inevitable footfalls of something that didn't care about obstacles.

“Sern,” Keth whispered, his face pale under the flickering streetlights. “He’s already inside.”

“And he’s not going to find us in there, which means he’s going to start looking out here,” Darion said, his eyes darting to the blue screen flickering in his vision.

[ Objective Updated: Reach Ironclad Trust & Security ]

[ Current Reward Tier: Class-B (Pending) ]

[ Required Condition: High-Stakes Environment ]

“I have to go, Keth. Somewhere he won’t expect a ‘museum rat’ to show up.”

“You’re running? After that? Darion, if Sern is what you say he is, you can’t just hide in a hole!”

“I’m not hiding. I’m leveling up. There’s a high-security bank three blocks from here. Ironclad Trust. They don't just keep money; they keep secrets. Digital ones.”

“A bank? You’re going to pull a heist while the city is being dismantled by a super-powered freak?!”

“It’s the perfect time, isn't it? Everyone’s looking at the fire. Nobody’s looking at the vault. Stay safe, Keth. Try not to get fired for letting the ghost escape.”

“Vexel! Get back here! Darion!”

Darion didn’t look back. He vanished into the shadows of the alley, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm. He wasn't just running; he was following the glowing gold trail only he could see, cutting through the neon-lit rain of the city.

Ten minutes later, he stood before the monolithic black marble facade of Ironclad Trust & Security. The main doors were already locked down, red security lights pulsing behind the reinforced glass.

“System, tell me you’ve got a backdoor. My Ghost Step is still on cooldown.”

[ Analysis: External ventilation shaft at 4.5 meters. ]

[ Suggestion: Use 'Archivist's Eye' to locate structural weaknesses. ]

“Right, the eye. Let’s see... there. That grate looks like it hasn't been serviced since the Cold War.”

He scrambled up a nearby dumpster, his fingers catching the lip of the vent. With a grunt and a sharp kick, the rusted metal gave way. He slid inside, the narrow duct smelling of dust and expensive air conditioning.

“Okay, I’m in. Now, where’s this private server?”

[ Guidance: Level B-3. The Obsidian Suite. ]

He dropped out of the ceiling into a plush, carpeted hallway. A security guard turned the corner, his hand immediately flying to his holster.

“Hey! Who are you? Hands in the air!”

“Whoa, easy there, big guy!” Darion raised his hands, a manic grin plastered on his face. “I’m with the... uh... Emergency Fire Inspection? Didn't you hear the sirens? The precinct just went up in smoke. I’m here to make sure your servers don't melt.”

“Fire inspection? Through the vents? Are you kidding me?” The guard drew his taser. “Get on the ground, now!”

“Look, I’d love to, but I’ve got a very tight schedule. Is that the Obsidian Suite behind you? Great. Thanks for the directions.”

“I said on the ground—!”

Darion lunged forward, not for the guard, but for the heavy biometric lock on the door behind him.

“System, bypass! Give me anything!”

[ Skill Triggered: Data Manipulation (Temporary Preview) ]

[ Override Initialized... 100% ]

The heavy steel door hissed open. Darion dove inside, slamming the manual override button just as the guard’s taser prongs hissed through the air, sparking harmlessly against the closing metal.

“Safe and sound,” Darion panted, leaning against the door. “Now, where’s the loot? And by loot, I mean the shiny box that makes the System happy.”

The room was silent, filled with rows of black server towers pulsing with rhythmic violet lights. In the center sat a single console, glowing with a complex array of encrypted data streams.

“This is it? No gold bars? No diamonds? Just a bunch of blinking lights?”

[ Objective: Access the 'Forgotten Protocol' file. ]

[ Progress: 0% ]

“Fine, fine. Let's see what's behind Door Number One.”

He sat at the console, his fingers flying across the holographic keyboard. To his surprise, the symbols seemed to make sense before he even touched them. It was as if the System was whispering the passwords directly into his nervous system.

“Wow, okay. ‘Admin_Password_123’? Seriously? These guys need a better IT department.”

[ Security Alert: Silent Alarm Triggered. ]

[ SWAT Response Estimated: 180 Seconds. ]

“Three minutes. Plenty of time. Let’s see... Forgotten Protocol... open... and... what the hell is this? It looks like a map of the stars. No, wait, it’s a map of the city, but with layers I’ve never seen before.”

“Stop right there!” A voice boomed from the room’s intercom. “This is Ironclad Security. You are in a restricted area. The tactical response team has been deployed. Abandon the console and lie face down.”

“You guys have a really nice intercom system!” Darion shouted back, his eyes glued to the screen as a progress bar crawled toward 90%. “Very crisp audio! Have you considered a career in podcasting?”

“We are not joking, intruder! You have sixty seconds before the room is flooded with incapacitating gas!”

“Gas? That’s a bit dramatic, don't you think? I’m just looking at some maps! It’s educational!”

[ Progress: 98%... 99%... 100% ]

[ Data Acquired: The Forgotten Protocol ]

[ Condition Met: Final Stand in a High-Security Zone. ]

Outside, the muffled sound of heavy tires screeching to a halt echoed through the building’s foundations. Blue and red lights began to strobe against the high windows of the lobby far above.

“They’re here,” Darion whispered. “And they brought the big guns.”

The sound of a heavy battering ram hitting the bank’s front doors reverberated through the Obsidian Suite.

“System, any time you want to hand out that reward would be great. I’m currently trapped in a box with a lot of angry guys in Kevlar outside.”

[ Calculation Complete. ]

[ Performance: B-Rank Efficiency. ]

[ Synchronization: 115% ]

The doors to the server room began to groan. A thermal charge detonated against the hinges, sending a shower of sparks into the dark room.

“Darion Vexel!” A voice barked through a megaphone outside the door. “This is the S.W.A.T. Tactical Unit! We have the building surrounded! There is no exit! Come out with your hands behind your head!”

“Surrounded, huh?” Darion looked at the screen. “That’s exactly what the System wanted. You guys are so predictable.”

The door finally buckled, swinging inward with a crash. A dozen tactical officers flooded the room, their rifle-mounted lights cutting through the violet haze, all centered on Darion’s chest.

“Freeze! Don't move a muscle!”

Darion didn’t freeze. He smiled. He reached out and touched the main server tower, feeling a sudden, violent surge of electricity arc from the hardware into his fingertips.

“You’re a bit late for the party, fellas!” Darion yelled over the cacophony of shouting. “I just finished the d******d!”

[ Reward Unlocked: Data Manipulation (Permanent) ]

[ New Skill: System Command ]

[ Description: You no longer follow the rules of the machine. You rewrite them. ]

The lead officer stepped forward, his finger tightening on the trigger. “I said stay down! Hands where I can see them!”

“You want to see something?” Darion whispered, his eyes glowing with a sudden, sharp blue light. “Watch this.”

He snapped his fingers.

Instantly, the tactical team’s gear went haywire. Their high-tech visors flickered to static, their laser sights spun in wild circles, and their encrypted radios began blasting a deafening, high-pitched screech of white noise.

“What’s happening?! My HUD is dead!”

“I can’t see! Fall back! Fall back!”

In the chaos, Darion stood up, the holographic map from the server now hovering inches before his face, integrated into his vision.

“Space was a suggestion,” Darion said, his voice echoing with a new, terrifying authority. “But data? Data is reality. And I’m the one holding the pen.”

He walked toward the line of blinded, panicked officers, the metal of the server room floor humming beneath his boots as every electronic lock in the building clicked open at once.

“Thanks for the assist, boys!” Darion chirped, stepping past the lead officer who was frantically tearing off his malfunctioning helmet. “I’ll be sure to leave a tip in the vault on my way out!”

As he reached the hallway, the System screen flared one last time.

[ New Master Objective: Open the First Gate. ]

[ Location: The Obsidian Spire. ]

[ Note: The Collector is following the signal. Hurry. ]

“The Spire, huh?” Darion glanced at the map in his mind. “Well, I’ve always wanted to see the penthouse. Let’s see if Sern can keep up with a ghost in the machine.”

The dim, flickering light of the conduit cast long, distorted shadows across Isavelle’s face, turning her features into a shifting landscape of planes and hollows. For the first time, Darion didn’t see the polished, unshakeable operative who had guided him through the Ministry’s labyrinthine intake process. He saw someone terrified, someone whose entire world had been built upon a foundation of convenient fictions."You knew," Darion whispered. The words weren't an accusation; they were a realization that felt like a serrated blade sliding between his ribs. "From the moment you pulled me out of that extraction zone, you knew exactly what the Ledger was. And you knew exactly what it was doing to me."Isavelle finally looked at him, her eyes glassy, reflecting the artificial hum of the Lower Sectors. She didn't offer a platitude. She didn't reach out to touch his arm in that practiced, empathetic way she used when she wanted to steer his focus. She simply let the silence settle between

"You said it was a book," Darion repeated, his voice rasping against the humid, stagnant air of the ventilation shaft. He didn't look at Isavelle. She adjusted her grip on the small, handheld diagnostic device that hummed with a low, dissonant frequency. "I said it was a Ledger, Darion. I never used the word 'book.' That was your interpretation of what a record of accountability should look like. In the Ministry, records aren't ink and paper. They are ghosts in the machine. They are the traffic patterns of the grid, the power fluctuations in the Spire, the micro-transactions of citizens who don’t even know they’re paying for their own surveillance."Darion leaned his head back against the cold, damp iron of the wall, letting out a breath that came out as a ragged shudder. The "Ghost Step" was receding, b

  • Chapter 13: The Echo of Ruin

The air in the Lower Sectors tasted of oxidized iron, stagnant damp, and the bitter, ozone-heavy tang of leaking power conduits. It was a place where the city’s refuse collected—not just the physical waste of a million souls living in the Spire’s shadow, but the discarded remnants of the Ministry’s failed experiments and broken tech. For Darion, it was the only graveyard dark enough to hide a man who had become a living glitch. He lay pinned against the rusted grating of the maintenance catwalk, his body feeling less like a biological organism and more like a corrupt file struggling to render in a broken engine. Each time his vision flickered, the world around him shifted. One moment, he saw the dull, flickering amber of a failing utility light; the next, he saw the underlying mathematical structure of the metal beneath him, a wireframe of cold, unforgiving polygons.Isavelle pulled her hand back as if the air itself had stung her. She sat back on her haunches, her tactical boots clat
