The door opened and the silence broke, cold air rushed in first, carrying that same heavy, metallic scent. Zayn stepped through beside Lira, every muscle tense, his mind already reaching for the edges of his upgraded skill.

The hallway beyond had changed, the red emergency lights were gone, now it flickered in a dull, pale white, but unstable, and glitching

“…It wasn’t like this before,” Zayn murmured.

“No,” Lira said quietly. “It wasn’t.”

The corridor stretched ahead longer than it should be.

Too long.

Zayn frowned. “…Did it get bigger?”

Lira didn’t answer.

Because she was already moving.

Zayn followed, slower this time, eyes scanning every shadow, every flicker of light, his mind felt… sharpe, not clearer, but faster, like something beneath the surface was constantly calculating, and predicting what was to come.

A faint flicker,he saw it.

A movement that hadn’t happened yet,a distortion at the far end of the hallway.

“…Stop,” Zayn said suddenly.

Lira froze instantly.

“What?”

Zayn’s eyes narrowed.

“…Something’s about to….”

A figure phased into existence exactly where he was looking, right on cue.

Lira’s grip tightened on her weapon. “…You saw that before it appeared.”

Zayn nodded slowly.

“…Yeah.”

The phased entity tilted its head.

Then…

It split into two identical forms and stood where one had been.

Zayn’s stomach dropped. “…That’s new.”

“Fall back,” Lira said.

“Wait,” Zayn whispered.

His vision sharpened

Echo Trace activated.

This time,he didn’t just see movement,he saw branching paths.

Options.

The creatures flickered, each one shifting between positions, and for a brief moment..

One path felt… heavier.

More real.

“…Left one,” Zayn said.

“What?”

“Left one’s real move!”

The two entities lunged….

Lira reacted instantly, swinging her rod at the left figure

CRACK.

Solid hit.

The right one flickered then vanished.

“…Okay,” Lira said, stepping back. “That’s useful.”

Zayn exhaled sharply. “…Yeah. Let’s hope it stays that way.”

The remaining entity recovered quickly, faster than before.

It lunged again but Zayn saw the path, ans stepped aside,he grabbed its arm,and slammed it into the wall.

THUD.

It flickered violently,then stabilized

Lira finished it with a sharp strike to the head.

The body collapsed and didn’t move.

Zayn stared.

“…Did we just kill it?”

Lira crouched slightly, watching.

“…I think so.”

A flicker.

HOSTILE NEUTRALIZED

MINOR EXPERIENCE GAINED

Zayn let out a breath.

“…Okay. That’s progress.”

But the relief didn’t last, because the hallway shifted.

Literally.

The walls moved,just slightly.

“…You see that?” Zayn asked.

“Yes.”

“…I don’t like that.”

“You shouldn’t.”

The corridor ahead stretched further, doors appeared where there hadn’t been any before.

New ones,different ones,all slightly open.

A faint whisper drifted through the air.

Zayn stiffened.

“…Do you hear that?”

Lira nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“…What is that?”

She didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t know, the whisper grew louder, not only one voice, but many, overlapping one another

“…help…”

“…stay…”

“…don’t…”

Zayn’s chest tightened.

“…Those sound like..”

“Players,” Lira finished quietly.

He swallowed.

“…They’re alive?”

“No.”

“…Then what….”

“Echoes.”

Zayn froze.

“…Like my skill?”

“No,” she said. “Like what’s left after the system is done with you.”

A chill ran down his spine.

“…That’s worse.”

“Yes.”

A door creaked open slightly to their right, the whisper grew louder from inside.

Zayn stepped closer instinctively.

“…Wait.”

Lira grabbed his arm.

“Don’t.”

“…What if there’s something useful in there?”

“There isn’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I do.”

Zayn hesitated,then,the whisper changed.

“…Zayn…”

He froze.

His blood ran cold.

“…Did you….”

“Yes,” Lira said immediately. “Ignore it.”

But his name….It called his name again

“…Zayn… help…”

His grip tightened.

“That’s not possible.”

“They read you,” Lira said sharply. “Your thoughts, your memories, that’s how they truck you and pull you in.”

Zayn’s jaw clenched.

“…That’s messed up.”

“Yes.”

The door creaked open wider, and all they could see was darkness inside.

Something moved.

“…Zayn…”

He stepped back.

“…Nope. Not falling for that.”

Good,smart.

The whisper faded, slowly, like it lost interest.

Zayn exhaled.

“…Okay. That’s officially the worst thing so far.”

“We keep moving,” Lira said.

He nodded, they continued down the shifting corridor.

More monsters appeared,but this time

Zayn saw them coming, and was able to predict their movements.

Guided Lira without hesitation.

“Right….duck….now!”

She moved instantly

A phased strike passed over her head

Zayn countered,they adapted together,faster,more efficient.

And yet,the deeper they went, the worse it felt, the air grew heavier, and the whispers grew even louder.

The walls became more unstable.

“…This place is getting worse,” Zayn said.

“Yes.”

“…Why?”

Lira’s expression darkened.

“Because we’re getting closer.”

“…To what?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then….

“…The main core of the trial.”

Zayn’s pulse quickened.

“…And what happens there?”

A pause

Then….

“…We find out what it’s really testing.”

They turned a final corner and stopped.

The corridor ended in a large circular and open room

At the center,a structure.

Strange.

Floating slightly above the ground.

Pulsing with faint light.

“…That doesn’t look friendly,” Zayn said.

“No,” Lira replied. “It doesn’t.”

A flicker.

OBJECTIVE UPDATED

INTERACT WITH CORE

Zayn stared at it.

“…Of course it is.”

Behind them, the hallway shifted again, this time it closed up the passage to the corridor they entered from sealing them in.

Zayn exhaled slowly.

“…No turning back.”

Lira stepped forward.

“No.”

He followed,carefully.

The core pulsed brighter as they approached.

The whispers grew louder.

More frantic.

More desperate.

“…Zayn…”

He ignored it.

Forced himself forward.

Step by step.

Until he stood right in front of it.

The light surged,blinding,and then,a voice.

Not broken.

Not distorted.

Clear.

Cold.

“Player.”

Zayn froze.

“…That’s new.”

The voice continued.

“You have progressed beyond expected parameters.”

His expression hardened.

“…I get that a lot.”

A pause.

Then…

“Proceed to evaluation.”

Light swallowed everything, not blinding at least, not in the way Zayn expected,it was softer, warmer, and even almost… comforting. That alone made it dangerous. When the light faded, he wasn’t in the containment level anymore, instead he stood on grass.Real grass.Soft beneath his feet, swaying gently in a breeze that actually felt alive, the sky stretched endlessly above him, blue, clear, untouched by the decay and distortion of the world he’d been trapped in.For a moment, zayn didn’t move.“…This is fake,” he said quietly.“Correct.”The voice came from behind him.Zayn turned.A figure stood a few meters away.Human, completely human,no distortion,no flicker,no glowing eyes.Just a man, dressed simply, hands clasped behind his back, watching him with calm, unreadable eyes.“…You’re not an enemy,” Zayn said.“Not in the conventional sense.”Zayn exhaled slowly. “Yeah, that sounds about right.”He glanced around again. No Lira.“…Where is she?”“Removed,” the man replied.Zayn’s expressio

Darkness pressed in from all sides.Zayn leaned against the cold wall, forcing his breathing to steady as the lingering effect of the system’s penalty drained through him. It wasn’t just fatigue,it felt like something essential had been taken. He didn't feel much pain, not exactly but he felt an absence within him“…I feel lighter,” he muttered.Lira glanced at him. “That’s not a good thing.”“Yeah,” Zayn said weakly. “Figured.”The room they’d stumbled into was small, and enclosed,no windows,no visible exits beyond the door they had just sealed behind them. And worst of all,no sound,no movement,no enemies,as good as that sounded it wasn't really comforting Zayn slowly pushed himself upright, gripping the wall for balance. His legs still felt unsteady, like they didn’t fully belong to him anymore.“…Where are we?” he asked.Lira moved cautiously toward the center of the room. “I don’t know.”That alone was unsettling, she always seemed to know something.A faint hum began to fill the ai
