Chapter 19: The Voice That Wasn't Mine

The voice remained inside my head after the western passage sealed, repeating its claim that it had found the new host. I stood among the guards, keeping my face still while the mark beneath my sleeve burned against my wrist. The words had not come from the primordial entity. I knew the difference between its cold warnings and the stranger's distant voice, yet both seemed to have reached the same conclusion.

You heard it too, I thought.

I did, the entity replied. Its presence had withdrawn so deeply that I could barely sense it. That voice did not come from the formation. Something beyond it has recognized our bond.

“Our bond?” I kept my lips still.

Do not speak aloud. I cannot tell whether it can hear thoughts, but I will not risk testing it.

Grandfather Zhao's orders brought the courtyard back to life. Guards spread around the sealed entrance while two elders examined the stone panels. Their instruments produced brief flashes before going dark, and each failed attempt made the patriarch's expression more severe.

“Stop wasting energy,” he ordered. “No one touches the formation again until Master Shen arrives. Double the guard around the western wing, and report every movement to me.”

One guard bowed. “What should we do about the man who came out?”

The patriarch's eyes narrowed. “Find him. Search the grounds, the outer walls, and every road leading away from the estate. He cannot have vanished without leaving a trace.”

The patriarch turned toward me. “You will return to the main residence and remain where the guards can see you. Do not approach the western grounds again.”

“I have no reason to go there,” I answered.

His gaze stayed on me, testing whether I meant it. “You have a habit of appearing wherever trouble begins.”

“Trouble seems to find this family without my help.”

A guard lowered his eyes to hide his reaction. Grandfather Zhao did not appreciate the answer, but he had more urgent matters to handle. He dismissed me with a sharp gesture and returned to the formation.

As I crossed the courtyard, the mark beneath my wrist pulsed again. I slipped into the shadow of a stone arch and pulled back my sleeve. The first symbol had darkened, while a second line curved beneath it, forming part of the broken circle I had seen on the stranger's robe.

Can you remove it? I asked.

No.

The answer came without hesitation.

Then tell me what it is.

It is a recognition mark. It does not simply follow your energy. It tells whoever placed it that you have been identified as a possible host.

My stomach tightened. “A host for what?”

I do not know what that presence intends. The mark may allow it to locate you, even with the passage sealed.

“You bonded with me because you needed a host. Are there others searching for one?”

The entity went quiet. I waited, watching the guards move around the courtyard, but it offered no answer.

You know more than you're telling me, I thought.

There are things I cannot explain without drawing its attention. If it can hear us, every question becomes a risk.

Elder Wu intercepted me near the covered walkway. His usual calm expression had tightened, and two guards stood several steps behind him.

“The patriarch wants you examined,” he said. “You are to report to the eastern guest room. Master Shen will not be present.”

“Why not?”

“Occupied.”

“Then the patriarch can wait until he is available.”

Elder Wu's eyes cooled. “This is not a request, Ryan. The patriarch wants to know whether the stranger left anything on you.”

My wrist seemed to burn beneath the sleeve. I gave no sign that his words had struck close to the truth.

“Did he see something?”

“He saw enough to ask questions. You would be wise to cooperate.”

The eastern guest room had been prepared for an examination. A bronze basin sat on a low table beside several strips of pale paper. The instruments were similar to those Grandfather Zhao had used after the failed ritual, though these carried smaller symbols along their edges.

Elder Wu watched me take a seat. “Place your hand in the basin.”

I looked at the water. A faint powder floated across its surface, arranged in a pattern that resembled the mark beneath my skin.

“What does this test detect?”

“Unusual energy.”

“Then it will find nothing. My spiritual roots are still damaged.”

“That is what we intend to confirm.”

I lowered my hand toward the basin, allowing a small amount of ordinary spiritual energy to gather around my fingers. The powder trembled, but the water remained clear. I had barely begun when a guard entered and whispered something to Elder Wu.

The elder's expression changed. “The patriarch has ordered the test postponed. You are to remain here until further instructions.”

A quiet knock came from the side door. Crystal entered before I could answer, closing it carefully behind her.

“They told me to stay in my room,” she said, “but I have never been good at following orders that make no sense.”

“You should not be here. Your grandfather may punish you.”

“He already has. My guards were removed, and my keys were taken. If he wants to keep me under control, he should at least stop pretending it is for my safety.”

Her anger was controlled, but I could see how deeply the restrictions had unsettled her. She glanced at the empty basin, then at my covered wrist.

“What happened after the stranger came out?”

Crystal listened without interrupting. “I found another reference to Jian Luo before the archive was sealed. It was in a family document that should have been destroyed years ago. He was brought into the Zhao family. He wasn't born into it.”

“Why would they erase someone they deliberately brought here?”

“I don't know, but the document described him as a formation specialist. It said he was given authority to enter places even the elders were forbidden to visit.”

“That sounds like the seal.”

“Maybe. I can search for the missing pages, but I need access to the old records.”

“You will be watched.”

“I already am. That doesn't mean I should stop.”

I studied her face. She was no longer asking me to trust her words; she was choosing to act despite the risk. It did not erase what had happened between us, but it mattered.

“Don't confront your grandfather alone,” I said. “Find the pages quietly, and tell me if anyone follows you.”

Crystal nodded. “You do the same. Whatever that stranger saw in you, don't let the family turn it into another reason to control you.”

After she left, I remained beside the table, thinking about the passage and the stranger's warning. The entity stirred again, and I turned my attention inward.

“You said the voice recognized our bond. What does that mean?”

It means the presence did not mistake you for an ordinary cultivator. It recognized the connection between us.

“Can it reach you?”

It may be able to trace the mark. I cannot tell how much it knows.

“You have had ten thousand years to learn about powers like this. Don't tell me you know nothing.”

A wave of irritation moved through our connection. I know enough to understand that you must not let it find a way into your consciousness. The mark is not a weapon, Ryan. It is an invitation, and answering it could give that presence access to you.

“Then remove it.”

I cannot.

I clenched my hand. “If we are going to survive together, you need to stop treating me like a vessel you can keep ignorant. I am the one carrying the consequences.”

For a while, the entity said nothing. Then its presence eased, though it did not disappear.

I will tell you what I can when I understand it. But do not mistake my silence for safety.

Before I could respond, a vibration travelled through the floor. Somewhere beyond the room, a bronze instrument began ringing. The mark on my wrist answered with a sharp pulse, and the unfamiliar voice returned, clearer than before.

The first door is closed. The second is already open.

I turned toward the eastern windows. Beyond the estate walls lay Property Seven, the abandoned cultivation site where we had found the sealed chamber and the object that called my name. A cold sensation spread through my chest as the entity pressed against my thoughts.

Do not go there. Something has awakened beneath the eastern property.

The door opened, and a servant hurried inside, his face pale.

“Ryan Shaw, the guards sent to inspect Property Seven have disappeared. The caretaker's old monitoring device has started transmitting again.”

“What is it transmitting?”

The servant held out a small communication unit. Static crackled from its speaker before a voice emerged, rough and unmistakably familiar.

My own voice.

“Don't let me out.”

  • Chapter 32: The Facility They Tried to Erase

The formation record remained open on the desk long after the visitor disappeared. The line marking the abandoned facility had become clearer, and Crystal was still studying it when Grandfather Zhao ordered the estate sealed. His guards checked the corridors while Elder Wu searched the ancestral wing.“We are leaving,” Crystal said. Her grandfather turned sharply. “No one leaves this estate until I say so.”“You can seal every gate, but you cannot make the evidence disappear,” she replied. “Someone is activating the old formation, and you are more interested in keeping us here than stopping them.”Grandfather Zhao's expression hardened. “You have no idea what you are walking into.”“Then tell us.”He offered no answer. That settled it for me. If we waited for his permission, the facility might be emptied before we reached it.I folded the formation record and placed it inside my coat. The metal fragment and identification token went into separate pockets. Crystal watched me, then nodde

  • Chapter 31: The Visitor from the Sealed Passage

The footsteps stopped outside the study, and the token in my hand gave another pulse. Grandfather Zhao moved between us and the door, raising one hand as a thin layer of spiritual energy spread across his fingers. It was not the posture of a man waiting for ordinary guards. He was preparing to fight.“Stay behind me,” he ordered.Crystal glanced at the formation record she still held. “You said the estate was secure. Who are you expecting?”“Someone who should have stayed away.”I kept the token in my palm. Its warmth had grown stronger since the voice announced Zhao Tianren’s return, but the energy inside it did not feel hostile. It seemed to be responding to the presence approaching from the corridor.A middle-aged man stepped into the study wearing a plain dark coat. A small broken-circle emblem was fastened around his wrist. Three cuts crossed its surface.Grandfather Zhao’s fingers tightened.“You have no right to enter this house.”The visitor looked past him at the photograph on

  • Chapter 30: The Man in the Photograph

The demand came from the doorway, but I kept my hand on the metal case. Grandfather Zhao stood in the doorway, his expression controlled, though fear still lingered in his eyes. Crystal stood beside me, the photograph between us.“Step away from the case, Ryan.”“You can explain what is in it first.”His gaze moved to the photograph. “That belongs to the Zhao family.”“So does the truth about the people you buried.”Crystal moved closer to the desk. “Grandfather, you cannot keep ordering us out whenever we find something you do not want us to see.”He looked at her with open displeasure, but she held her ground. For three years, I had watched her weigh every word against the cost of disobedience. That hesitation no longer controlled her.I lifted the photograph. “You stood with Jian Luo and another specialist. Who was the third man, and why does this warning say Zhao Tianren must not reach the host?”The patriarch said nothing before shutting the door.“Zhao Tianren was involved in the

  • Chapter 29: The Secret the Patriarch Buried

The warning in Grandfather Zhao’s voice stopped me before I could touch the metal plate again. The old man had ruled the Zhao family for years, yet the fear on his face had been real. Whatever name lay beneath the damaged letters carried more weight than the stolen page.Crystal stood beside me, watching him guardedly. Elder Wu waited near the doorway, his eyes returning to the plate.“You know who the buried person is,” I said.Grandfather Zhao looked at the guards. “Everyone else, leave us.”Elder Wu hesitated. The patriarch gave him a sharp glance, and he led the guards out. Crystal remained where she was.“I said everyone,” Grandfather Zhao told her.“And I heard you,” she replied. “I’m staying.”The patriarch finally looked away, deciding to let her remain.“You have already involved yourself in matters you do not understand,” he said.“I understand that our family tried to sacrifice my husband,” Crystal answered. “I understand that records were altered and people disappeared. • Chapter 28: The Intruder in the Forbidden Archive

The archive doors stood open when Crystal and I reached the eastern wing, though the guards stationed outside had been ordered to keep them locked until Grandfather Zhao arrived. One of them lay against the wall with blood running from his temple, while the other had collapsed beside the entrance, his fingers still wrapped around the handle of his weapon. Neither appeared dead, but whoever had entered had made certain they would not raise an alarm. Crystal hurried to the nearest guard and checked his breathing. “He’s alive. They struck him hard enough to keep him down, but they didn’t try to kill him.” “That means they wanted time, not bodies,” I said, studying the open doorway. The lock and metal plate were undamaged. Whoever entered had not forced the door; the archive had accepted them. Crystal rose and examined the plate. Her expression tightened as she brushed dust from a narrow groove beneath the family crest. “This is an old access channel. They stopped using it years ago.”

  • CHAPTER 27: THE NAME ON THE BURIAL REGISTER

The patriarch's final words remained between us. The person we buried years ago may not be dead. I watched Grandfather Zhao turn toward the staircase, but I had no intention of letting him end the conversation with another warning. “Who was buried?” I asked. “And why would that person's return frighten you?” He stopped without turning. “You have already disturbed something you do not understand. Your concern should be getting these injured men to safety, not digging through matters that were settled long ago.” “Your family decided my life was worth less than a ritual. You don't get to tell me which questions I can ask.” Crystal stepped beside me. “He's right. You cannot keep demanding obedience while hiding the truth about the people your traditions have harmed.” Grandfather Zhao looked at her with open displeasure. “You have forgotten your place.” “No,” she replied. “I am finally questioning the place you gave me.” The captain shifted against the wall, drawing our attention.
