CHAPTER 10: The Heiress
last update2026-09-16 04:50:24

Villa Azure had a rule.

No one entered before 7 AM without an appointment. Not even billionaires. Arthur Blackwood made the rule. Michael Sterling enforced it.

Isabella Sterling broke it at 6:58 AM.

Trenton was in the gym, not the mansion gym — the small one Arthur built behind the garage, with a single punching bag and a cracked mirror. He was in a black Dior t-shirt, black shorts, barefoot, his 6'4 ebony athletic frame soaked, doing slow Blackwood Fist forms his mother taught him at six. Quiet. No music. Just breathing and knuckles stopping one inch from the bag.

The door opened.

"Your form is wrong," a woman said, British accent, American edge.

Trenton didn't turn. "My mother taught me this at six. It's not wrong. You're early."

Isabella Sterling, 20, walked in like she owned every room she entered because, in a way, she did. Michael Sterling's daughter. Blonde, not dyed, long, tied back. 5'9, white sneakers, no makeup, Harvard MBA sweatshirt she had actually earned, black leggings. She didn't look like Vanessa. She didn't want to be looked at. She wanted to be listened to.

"Your elbow is two degrees high. On the third strike, you leave your ribs open. My father taught me to watch that. He learned it from Arthur," she said, and picked up a towel, tossed it to him.

Trenton caught it, finally turned, dark brown eyes meeting hers. Extremely handsome meeting extremely confident.

"You are Michael's daughter," he said.

"Isabella. I was in London closing the Geneva accounts you didn't know you owned. Dad called me at 2 AM. Said you have a falcon problem and a Claire problem. I can fix one. The other will fix itself."

She handed him a black folder. Inside — wire confirmations. Forty percent of Sullivan Biotech, bought at market price, 8:45 AM yesterday, from twelve scared small shareholders after Leon bought 19%. Convergence Group Holdings. $9.2 billion.

"I did it from the plane," she said. "You said 'buy at market price, don't scare Claire.' So I did. Claire still has 49%. Leon has 19%. You have 40%. Together you have 89%. He loses."

Trenton wiped his face, his Richard Mille RM 52-01 catching the early light.

"You bought a company from a plane in Tom Ford pajamas?"

"White Dior pajamas," she said, deadpan. "And I don't wear pajamas to close nine-billion-dollar deals. I wear Tom Ford, like you. Dad said you stopped wearing rags."

"I did," Trenton said.

"Good. Rags were performance art. This — " she gestured at his Dior shirt, his gym, his house — "is business. Leon Shepherd doesn't fear rags. He fears men who look like you do right now and still do push-ups at 6 AM."

That was the first time Trenton understood what kind of woman Isabella was.

Not a regretter like Vanessa Cole. Not pure like Sophia Reed. Not ice like Claire Sullivan.

She was an heiress who understood empire.

At 8:30 AM, the Maybach arrived to take him to Century City. Isabella got in the front seat without being asked.

"I am your assistant now," she said. "Officially. Convergence. Dad signed. Unofficially, I'm here so Claire Sullivan doesn't think you bought her company to enslave her. She will think that. Ice Queens always do."

Trenton sat in the back, black Tom Ford suit, white shirt, no tie, diamond chain tucked, $2 black coffee from the campus cart in his hand even though Villa Azure had a $20,000 espresso machine.

"I didn't buy it to enslave her," he said. "I bought it to protect it. Arthur's will says marry her within a year. Falcon's Creed wants her dead to get to me. Leon wants her company to get to me. I want her alive."

Isabella looked at him in the rearview.

"Then tell her that. Not with flowers. With a boardroom. Ice Queens don't hear 'I love you.' They hear 'I bought back your father's company at market price and put it in your name.'"

Sullivan Biotech tower, 23rd floor, 9:15 AM.

Claire was already there, waiting. Not in Chanel. Not in sneakers either. In between — white Oxford, black pantsuit jacket off, sleeves rolled, hair down, ice-blue eyes tired, no glasses today. She had been there since 5 AM, trying to call Patel, who had sold 32% for $50 million.

When Trenton walked in with Isabella, her face changed.

It wasn't jealousy like Vanessa's. It was calculation. Cold, instant.

"Who is she?" Claire said, voice flat, porcelain beautiful, but with an edge.

Isabella stepped forward, hand out. "Isabella Sterling. Michael Sterling's daughter. MBA. I closed the 40% purchase last night. I manage Geneva for Convergence."

Claire didn't shake her hand. She looked at Trenton.

"You brought an heiress to my board meeting to replace me?" she said quietly.

"No," Trenton said, calm, his large ebony hand taking Claire's small pale one, his Tom Ford suit close to her Oxford shirt. "I brought an heiress to help you keep your board. Because Leon will bring three men with falcon tattoos and a lawyer who will say you sold cheap. You need someone who knows how Geneva buys."

Claire's ice-blue eyes flicked to Isabella, then back to Trenton, then to his hand holding hers.

"You stopped wearing rags," she whispered, the same thing she said yesterday.

"I stopped needing to prove I could be poor," he said, so only she heard. "Today you needed a CEO, not a bottle picker. So I wore Tom Ford. Tomorrow, if you need a student, I will wear Dior and sit on grass with you."

For three seconds, Claire's Ice Queen mask cracked. She squeezed his hand.

"She sits far," she whispered, looking at Isabella.

"She sits far," Trenton promised.

Boardroom, 9:30 AM.

Leon Shepherd was already in Claire's chair, silver hair perfect, white tuxedo jacket at 9 AM, cruel handsome. Next to him, Victor Kane, fired yesterday, falcon tattoo covered with a gold watch, and Patel, sweating.

And next to them, two men in black vests, left wrists exposed — black falcon tattoos, wings spread. Falcon's Creed. Founded 1995 by Arthur to protect his banks, betrayed him, hunted him till his death on Venice Beach.

Leon smiled when he saw Trenton. Then he saw Isabella.

"Ah, Sterling's little girl. Michael sends his daughter to do a man's job now?"

Isabella didn't flinch. She sat far, as promised, opened her laptop, and said, loud enough for all ten directors:

"Mr. Shepherd, at 8:45 AM yesterday, Convergence Group Holdings, represented by me, purchased 40% of Sullivan Biotech at $9.2B market price from twelve shareholders. Filings attached. SEC approved 8:46 AM. With Miss Sullivan's 49%, you are now a 19% minority with no board rights. Also, Mr. Patel, selling 32% worth $9.6B for $50M is not a sale. It's securities fraud. FBI is downstairs."

The room went silent.

Patel fainted. Literally.

Leon Shepherd's smile vanished.

Trenton hadn't said a word yet. He just stood behind Claire's chair, in Tom Ford, his Richard Mille catching light, holding $2 coffee, letting Isabella do what heiresses do.

Then he spoke, quiet, deep.

"Uncle Leon, you tried to poison Arthur. You tried to poison me at your gala. You sent a man with a bird on his wrist to watch me at school. Now you wear a white tuxedo to my fiancée's boardroom at 9:30 AM. That's not power. That's costume. Get out of her father's chair."

Security — Arthur's old private guard, not building security — entered. Six men, silent.

They escorted Leon, Victor, Patel, and the two falcon men out. Victor's gold watch slipped. Black falcon tattoo exposed. Gasps.

When the door closed, Claire sat down in her father's chair, her chair, and exhaled.

Isabella closed her laptop. "Seventy percent combined. Company safe. You are welcome, Ice Queen."

Claire looked at her, then at Trenton, then said something no one expected.

"Thank you," she said to Isabella. "And... stay close next time. Not far."

Isabella smiled, real this time. "I will. Someone needs to make sure he doesn't wear rags to the next war."

Trenton sat between them, in Tom Ford, $2 coffee still warm, and realized — this was his empire now. Not just money. Women who fought for him, not with him.

Outside, Leon Shepherd in the elevator, watched by 200 employees, called Kade Falcon.

"Kill him on campus," he hissed. "On camera. Let his little heiress watch."
