Blondie turned to Ethan, who was still sitting in his booth chewing a piece of toast. "Hey, pretty boy. This doesn't concern you. Get up and walk out before you get hurt."

Ethan set down his toast. He wiped his mouth with a napkin. He stood up slowly from the booth, and as Blondie reached out to shove him toward the door, Ethan caught his wrist mid air.

He squeezed. Rotated. The bone snapped with a crack that echoed through the silent diner like a branch breaking in a frozen forest.

Ethan burned the body to ashes with a concentrated burst of Dragon Force. The wind carried the remains into the trees, and within moments there was nothing left of Master Garrett but scorched earth and the smell of something foul.He turned to Natasha. She was on the ground, her body curled inward, her skin flushed so deep it looked like she was burning from the inside out.Her breathing came in short, desperate bursts, and her consciousness was flickering in and out like a candle in a storm. The red powder had overwhelmed every defense she had, and even her combat discipline, the iron will that had kept her fighting long past the point where most people would have collapsed, was crumbling.Ethan knelt beside her and placed both hands on her shoulders, channeling Dragon Force into her bloodstream to neutralize the chemical agent. The moment his energy entered her body, something went wrong. The Resentful Dragon Force inside his core surged with a violence that nearly knocked him off h

  • CHAPTER 126

Below, Garrett cornered Natasha against a cluster of boulders. The red powder had taken full hold of her body. Her skin was flushed deep crimson, her breathing came in shallow, ragged bursts, and her combat effectiveness was collapsing faster than she could compensate. She was still fighting, still throwing strikes that would have killed a normal man, but the precision was gone and Garrett knew it."You stupid girl." Garrett wiped blood from his lip and smiled with the patience of a man who had already won. "Did you really think you could steal from The Sanctum? You're a dog chasing a car. Even if you caught it, what were you going to do with it?"Natasha's hand dropped to the dagger at her hip. Her fingers closed around the handle and she drew it not toward Garrett, but toward her own throat. Her eyes were steady. She was not bluffing."She'd rather die than be taken," the Spirit observed quietly. "That tells you everything about what The Sanctum does to prisoners."Ethan stepped out

  • CHAPTER 125

Ethan dropped from the Griffin compound wall and hit the ground running. The spiritual mark that Master Garrett had planted on his shoulder earlier that day was long gone, burned off within seconds of contact. But the Spirit had done something far more useful with those seconds. He had copied the signature."Got him," the Spirit said, his voice focused and locked in like a hunting dog on a scent. "Northwest. Moving fast. About four miles out and climbing."How strong is the signal?"Clear as a bell. Old man left his fingerprints all over your meridians when he touched you. Sloppy. Arrogant. The kind of mistake people make when they think they're the smartest person in the room."Ethan moved through the city like smoke, leaping between rooftops and cutting through alleys at a speed that would have blurred him to any camera that tried to catch his shape. The signature pulled him north, past the commercial district, past the residential towers, toward the old parks on Crestwood's outer e

  • CHAPTER 124

Ethan reached into the Dragon Soul Void Cauldron through his spatial storage and produced three small pills. He knelt beside the old woman first and placed one between her cracked lips. The effect was instant. The color returned to her face, her breathing steadied, and the parasite dissolved inside her body like salt in water. He gave the second to Lawrence, who gasped with relief as the agony vanished from his chest in a single wave. Then he stood over Gloria. She was on the floor, the Heart Devourer chewing through her cardiac tissue, her face contorted with agony and terror. Her eyes found his, and in that moment she remembered exactly what he had told her at the front door hours ago.Don't regret this. She regretted it now with every fiber of her being.Ethan held the pill between two fingers and looked down at her. "What did I tell you at the door, Gloria?""Please." Her voice was barely a whisper, broken and raw. "Please save me."He dropped the pill. Gloria caught it with tremb

  • CHAPTER 123

Gloria lunged forward. "You ungrateful cockroach! You bottom feeding worm! You would kill your own mother for money? I'll have you thrown in prison so deep they'll forget your name!"Lance's hand came up fast. The slap caught Gloria across the face with enough force to spin her sideways, and she hit the floor hard, her cheek already swelling red.She lay there with her palm pressed against her face, staring up at her youngest brother with an expression of total incomprehension.Gloria Griffin, the woman who had bulldozed every person in this family for decades, could not process what had just happened to her."I told you to sit down." Lance's hand was still raised."Lance, stop this!" The old woman tried to push herself upright, tears streaming down the deep lines of her face. "I love all my children equally. I have always loved you. Please, my boy, please stop.""Love." Lance pulled a small bone whistle from his jacket pocket. It was no bigger than his pinky finger, carved from somet

  • CHAPTER 122

The sound of Master Garrett crashing through the broken window had barely faded when Lance Griffin's face changed. The nervous, fidgeting youngest brother who had spent weeks playing the role of concerned family member peeled away like dead skin, and what sat underneath was something cold and patient and full of poison. He walked into his mother's bedroom without knocking and found Lawrence still holding the iron ring in his trembling fist, Gloria half awake in the bedside chair, and their mother lying pale against the pillows."Give me the ring, Lawrence." Lance's voice was flat and calm, the kind of calm that does not come from peace but from a decision made a long time ago.Lawrence turned slowly. "What are you talking about?""The ring. The headship. The shares. Everything you took from me because you happened to crawl out of her first." Lance pointed at their mother without looking at her. His lip curled with something that had been rotting inside him for years."Lance, sit down.
