Chapter 8: The First Move
By the next morning, the entire school was in chaos. The rumor mill had been circling all around the university creating a more tense atmosphere. Every hallway, every classroom, every corner of Northvale University buzzed with speculation. Was Tessa really dating Adrian Carter? Was this some kind of prank? Or—worse—was Adrian manipulating her? The more absurd the rumors became, the more I enjoyed watching them spread. The one thing I loved about all of this was the fact that I could put Nathan back in his place and of course make Sophia jealous. Nathan was barely holding it together. His usual cocky smirk was gone, replaced by a permanent scowl. Every time he caught me with Sophia, his fingers twitched like he wanted to throw a punch. Sophia, on the other hand, was clearly struggling with regret. She hadn’t spoken to me since yesterday, but I noticed the way she hesitated before passing by, the way her gaze lingered on me as if she wanted to say something but couldn’t find the words. I wasn’t interested. I had bigger plans. And today was the day to set them in motion. [ The Fire Starts ] Lunchtime at the cafeteria was more than just a break—it was an event. Social status was determined by where you sat, who you sat with, and who wasn’t invited. Nathan's table was the throne of the school’s elite. The center of power. And today, I planned to dismantle it. I walked into the cafeteria with Tessa, casually holding a cup of coffee she had insisted on buying for me. It was a small gesture, but it spoke volumes. Nathan's table noticed immediately. The second we stepped inside, I saw his group tense. Tessa sat beside him, looking uneasy. The others whispered among themselves, eyes flicking between me and Tessa. I let them sweat for a moment before making my move. Instead of taking our usual seats, Tessa and I walked straight toward Nathan's table. Gasps rippled through the cafeteria. Nathan's grip on his fork tightened. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I smirked. “Sitting down.” Without waiting for an invitation, I pulled out a chair and sat across from Nathan. Tessa did the same, acting as if nothing was out of the ordinary. The tension at the table was suffocating. Sophia swallowed hard. “Adrian… are you sure you’re in the right place?” Tessa raised an eyebrow. “Why wouldn’t he be?” Nathan's fingers curled into a fist on the table. “He doesn’t belong here.” I leaned back, sipping my coffee. “And who decides that? You?” Nathan's jaw clenched. “Yeah. Me.” Tessa laughed, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “Wow, Nathan. I had no idea you were in charge of seating arrangements. Should I call the administration and confirm that?” Nathan's face turned red. He was fuming, but he couldn’t lash out. Not here. Not in front of the entire cafeteria. I glanced around, making sure I had everyone’s attention before delivering my next blow. “You know, Nathan,” I said, voice dripping with amusement, “for someone who keeps saying I don’t matter, you seem really bothered by me.” A few people at the table exchanged looks. Nathan exhaled sharply. “You’re just using Tessa to get attention.” Tessa snorted. “Please. If anything, I’m using him. He’s far more interesting than you ever were.” A ripple of laughter spread through the cafeteria. Nathan's ears turned red. Sophia shifted uncomfortably. “Tessa, you don’t mean that…” Tessa tilted her head. “Don’t I?” Nathan slammed his hand on the table. “Enough.” Silence fell over the cafeteria. Nathan's gaze locked onto mine, his voice low and dangerous. “I don’t know what game you’re playing, Hayes, but it’s going to end badly for you.” I smiled, completely unbothered. “We’ll see about that.” [ The Breaking Point ] After lunch, I headed toward the library with Tessa, enjoying the fact that Nathan’s anger was barely under control. He was cracking, and I was only getting started. But I didn’t expect what happened next. As soon as I stepped outside, a hand grabbed my arm and yanked me back. I barely had time to react before Nathan shoved me against the wall. “You think you’re smart, don’t you?” he hissed, his face inches from mine. “You think you can just walk into my world and take over?” I met his glare with a smirk. “Looks like I already have.” His eyes flashed with fury. “Stay the hell away from Sophia.” I laughed. “Or what? You’ll throw a tantrum?” Nathan's grip tightened on my shirt. “I don’t care what kind of stunt you’re pulling—I will ruin you.” I leaned in slightly, lowering my voice. “You mean like how I’m ruining you?” His fist clenched. For a moment, I thought he was actually going to hit me. But then he released me and stepped back. “This isn’t over,” he muttered before storming away. I dusted off my jacket, watching him go. He was losing control. And I was just getting started.

Chapter 119“If you know what is good for you, then you are going to stay out of my way!” I said with anger. “Wow!” Jack said, laughing as he walked out of the darkness, and he stood. “Don't you think you are supposed to be afraid? You ought to beg me and pray that I don't kill you.” I laughed as I cracked some bones around my neck. “Don't you think it is supposed to be the other way round?” I said, walking back towards him. “You watch as Nathan's bullet robbed Park of his life. I am only sad that Nathan won't be here to see you die as I kill you slowly.” I said with venom in my voice. Jack didn’t flinch. His coat fluttered slightly as he rested on a part of a tree. “I figured you'd say something melodramatic like that,” he replied coolly, tilting his head as if he were trying to read me. “The problem is, Adrian, you still think this is about Park.”“What the hell did you do, Jack?” I hissed, circling slightly.Jack’s smile never dropped. “I opened the door. Chapter 118The moon had risen higher now, casting pale silver over the thick canopy of the forest. My breath clouded the air as I stood perfectly still, hidden in shadow. I need to make sure I was able to give Ren and Marcus a head start. I glanced back a few times, making sure they were long gone. The silence didn’t last.Crack.The first mercenary stepped through a patch of ferns, sweeping his rifle in a slow arc. He wore the same cybernetic mask, glowing red eyes scanning for movement. Behind him, two more figures fanned out, silent and deliberate—wolves hunting their prey. But they weren't ready for me.My hands curled into fists. The bones in my knuckles cracked audibly, my skin tightening as the heat flared beneath it. I’d suppressed it for so long. The thing inside me. The one Jack said made me a monster. Chapter 117The air was thick with tension. I didn’t move. I just stared at him, the image of his smug, composed face made me want to give him a dirty slap. A part of me wanted to laugh at the absurdity of it all. A deal? After everything?I stepped closer, just slightly, enough to make his fingers twitch. He was trying to play calm, but I could see it—the subtle flicker of nerves behind his eyes.“You think I came all the way here just to talk?” I said, voice low and calculative. “After what you did to those kids? After what you did to Park? And you stand there with your legs crossed like some fucking priest asking me to repent?”Jack sighed, almost bored. “You’re too emotional, Adrian. That’s always been your flaw. It makes you reckless.”“No,” I said quietly, “it makes me dangerous.”Behind me, a floorboard creaked—the signal. Marcus was in position. Ren would be watching us through the back window, ready to move the second things went sideways.Jack leaned back in his chair, fol

Chapter 116The air was heavy and static as I stood at the edge of the woods, staring down at the flickering coordinates on my phone screen. Juno had marked it with a red dot, bold and pulsating—almost as if the location itself was alive, waiting for me.Nathan’s base. At least that was what I thought to myself. Finally,It felt surreal. We had been running after a goose chase for weeks, dead ends, and decoys meant to throw us off his trail. But this… this felt real. Too real. The kind of reality that didn’t let you walk away unchanged.Behind me, Ren and Marcus stood in tense silence. I knew they didn’t have to come—but they did anyway. Despite everything I’d said, everything I’d become, they still followed me into the hell hole. “ Does he know you are here?” I asked, looking at Ren. “ Who? Leo?” Ren replied and I nodded. “ He owes us too, Adrian. You are not the only one who wants to see his head on a spike.”I didn't say anything but felt the weight on my shoulder. I didn't have

Chapter 115Everything was happening so fast and it almost looked like the students were not buying their usuals anymore. The school environment was back to the way it was. No smoking around the corridor and they were not passing contraband either. “ Do you think Nathan is dumb?” I heard a voice behind me and I turned. “ Do you think he is going to use the school to run his business when the news is going viral about what happened?" Marcus said, looking at me. “ If you are trying to get to him then you need to think outside the box. Think of what you are going to do if you are him.” Ren added. I looked at both of them and said nothing. But the truth was, they were right. Juno just received a message of their movements and I cannot but wonder where their base was. It was quite easy with Milrada but tracking Nathan had been tough. Tougher than I expected of course. “ When are you going to come back?” Ren asked, staring at me. “ Come back?” I flashed a set of angry eyes at him. “ Le

Chapter 114“You shouldn't do that again.” Juno’s words caught me immediately when I got in. I looked back with an angry face. “Are you barking orders into my face?” I asked with my eyebrows arched. “I need to know where you are and keep you safe at all times. You are at risk when you go out on your own.” Juno said again. “At risk? Have you forgotten what I can do? Do I need to remind you that I alone took down Milrada and her business?” I said with anger. “Let me ask you again, Juno. Are you here to give me orders?” The room was thick with tension as we both stared at ourselves. “Why don't you both loosen up?” Juliet's voice broke the tension between us both. “Do I need to remind you that we have a bigger problem than to fight among ourselves?” She said, "Set the table." The aroma of the food she cooked caught my throat as I looked past Juno. “Why are you still here?” I asked, staring at Juliet, who was busy arranging the tables. “Is that a way of saying thank you?” she said back
