The Winslow family’s living room turned icy, as if it had become a battlefield. Only anger and bitterness radiated from the guest’s eyes. Dean Donovan sat calmly in the chair across from them, a thin smile playing on his lips, his gaze sharp and calculating.
“I still can’t wrap my head around it,” Dean said as he fiddled with his watch, his tone light but cutting. “The heir of a family as big as the Winslows… beaten black and blue over some college girl. Embarrassing, isn’t it?”
Helena shot to her feet, her face tense. “Dean, that’s enough! You’ve gone too far—”
“Helena,” Leonard cut her off swiftly, his voice cold and sharp, “let me handle this.”
Kai sat on the long sofa, his body still aching, his face bruised and swollen. He said nothing, simply keeping his head lowered, letting the conversation swirl around him.
Dean chuckled softly before continuing. “You know, Uncle? The family’s stock is already wavering ever since that little gossip spread. And it hasn’t even been an hour! Some kids at campus filmed Kai being rejected in public, and the video is everywhere now. Investors are starting to doubt—if your son can’t even protect his own dignity, how’s he supposed to protect the family business?”
The air grew heavy. Leonard clenched his fist against the table. “Watch your mouth, Dean. Don’t think I don’t know what you’ve been doing behind the scenes.”
Dean shrugged, feigning innocence. “I’m only stating facts, Uncle. And here’s another fact… people out there trust my moves more. They say I’d make a far better successor than Kai. Besides, I already warned you not to recklessly teach this weakling about the family’s hidden identity. He’s just not sharp enough, Uncle.”
Helena gasped, her eyes widening. “You’re insane! Kai is the only heir! Don’t you dare speak so carelessly!”
Kai slowly lifted his head. His face was cold, but his eyes glinted dangerously. “Let him, Mom. I want to see just how far he’ll go.”
Dean smirked. “Finally, Kai speaks. I thought you’d keep hiding behind that blank stare of yours.” He leaned forward, his voice lowering but his words sharper. “Think about it. You’ve been living like some ordinary student, working part-time at a cheap café, ridiculed as the loser on campus. Meanwhile, I’ve been learning how to control markets, how to play politics in boardrooms. I’ve been preparing myself to inherit. And you? You’ve been preparing your face to be laughed at.”
“Are you done?” Kai asked, his voice calm—almost too calm.
Dean paused for a second, a little taken aback, before giving a short laugh. “So you do have some bite. But words won’t change the truth.”
Leonard slammed his hand on the table, the sound cracking through the room. Everyone fell silent. “Dean! Don’t forget your place. You’re a guest in this house.”
Dean turned to his uncle with a mocking smile. “Yes, a guest. But a guest who might soon be respected more by the investors than the host himself.”
Helena nearly broke into tears, trembling with anger, while Kai stared straight at Dean. Then, in a flat tone, he said, “If you think you’re more worthy, then prove it. But don’t expect me to hand anything over to you.”
Silence. Kai’s words shifted the entire atmosphere, making the room unbearably heavy.
Dean tilted his head, eyes glinting with scorn. “Good. I like it. Finally, a bit of fire in the veins of this pathetic boy.” He rose from his seat. “But I think we should talk privately. There’s something a little more… personal.”
Leonard moved to object, but Kai cut in first. “Fine. I don’t mind.”
They stepped out of the living room, heading for the wide balcony on the second floor. The New York night air was sharp against their skin, the city lights blazing beneath them. Kai leaned against the railing, while Dean lit a cigarette beside him.
“Catherine.” Dean dropped the name casually, and Kai snapped his head toward him.
Dean smirked, exhaling smoke. “Ah, so that’s still an open wound. I thought maybe you’d gone numb.”
“What do you want?” Kai’s voice was flat.
Dean leaned closer, lowering his voice, each word striking like a blade. “You think Catherine’s just some ordinary girl? No. She’s been part of the game for a long time. And guess who’s been behind it all?”
Kai’s brow furrowed. “Don’t you dare drag her into your schemes.”
Dean chuckled. “My schemes? Kai, the world is filthier than you imagine. Catherine was the first woman I ever fell for. And you think I’d just sit back and watch her with you? That closeness she built with you—you really thought it was genuine? She was buying time, Kai. Time to destroy you, to make you look like a clown in front of everyone.”
Kai clenched his fists so tightly his nails dug into his palms. “Whatever she is, she has nothing to do with our family’s war.”
“Tch.” Dean locked eyes with him, unblinking. “You really think so? Do you even know who her new boyfriend is? Everything’s part of the plan. And now, the world believes you’re a loser. Meanwhile me? All I have to do is step in and show them Donovan is the better choice over Winslow.”
Kai’s breath came faster, though his face remained composed.
Dean clapped him on the shoulder, grinning cruelly. “You should be thanking Catherine. Without her, I wouldn’t have had the chance to bring you down so fast.”
Kai turned, his eyes sharper than Dean had ever seen. “If everything you’ve said is true… then I’ll make sure you regret ever touching my life.”
Dean froze for half a second, then burst into laughter. “At last! That’s the Kai I want to see. But remember this: threats mean nothing without power.”
Kai stepped away, gazing out over the glittering city. His voice was low, but filled with iron resolve. “Power can be learned. But my dignity… will never be surrendered again.”
Dean was silent for a moment, then crushed his cigarette against the railing. His smile was faint, but his eyes blazed. “Alright, Kai. The game has just begun. Let’s see if you can survive.”
Kai gave no reply. The night wind howled around them, carrying a silence heavy with tension.

Morning sunlight pierced through the sheer curtains of Catherine’s bedroom, painting the room with a golden glow. The air was still chilly, but what jolted Kai awake wasn’t the cold—it was the alien heaviness in his body, the pounding ache in his skull, as if a hammer had struck him repeatedly. With effort, he forced his eyes open. And froze. He was lying on a wide bed draped in crisp white sheets, his upper body bare, the covers tangled loosely around his waist. Every muscle in him stiffened when he realized someone was beside him—Catherine, wrapped in a silk nightgown, her hair cascading down her shoulders, smiling faintly as she clutched the blanket.Kai shot upright, his breathing ragged. “What… what the hell happened last night?!”Catherine languidly brushed her hair back with her fingers, her gaze lingering on him with dangerous amusement. “You don’t remember? You were so… passionate, Kai. You begged me not to resist you. And so…” Her lips curved into a sly smile. “We finally le

The night grew deeper at the Leonard family’s mourning house. White candles on the main altar flickered weakly, as if grieving alongside those left behind. The scent of incense clung to the air, mingling with the fragrance of lilies carefully arranged beside the large portrait of Mr. Leonard. His warm smile, now frozen in the frame, had become nothing but a memory; his breath was truly gone from this world.Kai sat in the chair closest to the altar. His face was pale, his eyes swollen red from holding back tears for too long. Since afternoon, mourners had come and gone, offering their last respects. Now, the mansion had grown quiet. Distant relatives had already left, leaving only a few servants lingering at a respectful distance.Kai stared at his father’s portrait for what felt like hours. His trembling hand reached out, clutching at empty air.Father… I never even got to say I’m sorry one last time. How am I supposed to face all of this alone? The front door creaked open softly. Th

Tables lay overturned, glass shattered across the floor, and every gaze was locked on the two young men facing each other.Kai, chest heaving, glared at Zac who staggered on unsteady legs. A thin stream of blood trickled from Zac’s forehead where it had slammed against the corner of the bar table. Catherine crouched beside him, panic flashing in her eyes, though her glare toward Kai burned with hatred.“You… you dare fight me?!” Zac roared, trying to rise, though his knees buckled beneath him.Kai clenched his fists, holding himself back. “I told you. Don’t touch me again. Don’t lay a filthy hand on anyone else either.”A few patrons jeered, while others had already pulled out their phones to record. The noise only made Zac’s face turn a deeper shade of red.“Who the hell do you think you are, nerd?!” Zac spat blood and saliva onto the floor. “You’re nothing but a spoiled brat who happened to be born rich. Without your family’s name, you’re no one!”The words hit, but this time Kai di

The night air bit into his skin as Kai stepped out of the hospital. Neon lights flickered along the busy street, reflecting off car windows, but everything blurred before his eyes. Richard’s words, Dean’s sly smile, Zac’s cutting tone—they all still echoed in his head.Kai pressed his temples. It felt like his skull was stuffed with voices, each one fighting to be louder.“A puppet.”“A laughingstock.”“You can’t even control yourself.”His heart pounded hard, cold sweat coating his palms.“I need air…” he muttered, barely audible. He wandered aimlessly until a small neon sign caught his eye: Bar & Grill. The place didn’t look too crowded, soft music spilling from inside. Kai pushed the door open, hoping at least one drink might quiet the storm in his mind. The bar was dim, filled with the smell of alcohol and a faint haze of smoke. Kai slipped into a corner seat and ordered a soda with lemon—not because he didn’t want something stronger, but because his body already felt too unsteady

The cold hospital corridor turned into a battlefield the moment the emergency boardroom door opened. A long table was covered with files, laptops glowing, and stern faces surrounding it. Every pair of eyes shifted toward Kai as he walked in, stiff and tense.“He’s here.” One of the directors spoke flatly.Kai squared his shoulders, forcing himself not to show hesitation.Richard rose to his feet, a crooked smile on his face. “At last. The hidden heir shows up in the middle of the storm.”Kai stared straight ahead, silent.“Sit down.” Dean’s voice cut in, warm and soothing, as if to calm the room. “We’re all here for the company.”Kai pulled out a chair and sat, his heartbeat pounding in his ears.A bespectacled man—one of the senior directors—cleared his throat. “Mr. Leonard’s condition remains critical. The company needs certainty. If he cannot return, we must decide who will lead.”“That’s obvious.” Richard leaned back in his chair. “I’m the most experienced one here. I’ve been mana

The harsh hospital lights stung his eyes. The white floor gleamed, and the sharp smell of antiseptic filled the air. Kai walked quickly, almost running, chasing the gurney that carried his father’s body. The squeak of wheels mixed with the frantic shouts of nurses.“Dad!” Kai cried, his voice breaking. His hand managed to grasp Leonard’s arm for a fleeting moment before the emergency room doors slammed shut.“Please wait outside.” The doctor’s voice was firm, and then the doors closed completely.Kai froze, his breath ragged, his hands trembling. The world felt as if it had collapsed. Just minutes ago, his father had been standing tall on stage, speaking with a commanding voice. Now…Kai dug his fingers into his hair. Was this my fault? If I had fought harder against that announcement… would he still have collapsed like this?“Oh my God, Kai?”The voice snapped him back. He turned. Catherine stood at the end of the hallway, her dark blue gown striking against the stark white walls. Be
