Hamilton was pissed off because Roman dared to bid for the ring.

“You’re being so confident because you have Miss Annabel seated beside you. Trying to take advantage of her will not work at this auction. You seem to be unaware of the rules, and that could get you in trouble.” He said to Roman.

“Don’t act like you’re concerned for my well being.” Roman scoffed at Hamilton.

“And he’s well aware of the rule that no one can pay on behalf of another person once they bid on an item. The person who pays must be the same person who bids. I gave him the list of rules before we came.” Annabel said with a smirk as she looked in Hamilton’s direction.

“And does he know what will happen to him when he fails to pay for the item with such a high bid?” Hamilton asked.

He didn’t get a response to his question because the auctioneer began to speak again.

“Two hundred million, going once. Going twice,”

“Two hundred and ten million.” Hamilton said as he raised his bidding pad.

He immediately put his hand down to hide the fact that his hands were shaking after bidding such a high amount. He would have to sell almost all his properties to be able to pay for the ring. But he just couldn’t swallow his pride and let Roman win. He expected Roman to back down, instead Roman raised his bidding pad,

“Two hundred and twenty million dollars.”

There was another moment of whispering, and murmurs among the guests.

“He’s going to get himself killed.”

‘Do you remember the incident that happened last time? I heard that when someone refused to pay for an item, the owner of the auction house sent some men to beat them up.”

“He’s foolish for trying to start trouble here.”

“Why does he even want the ring? What is so important about it?”

Roman pretended not to hear any of the gossip floating around.

“Two hundred and twenty five million!” Hamilton spoke up to bid higher.

“Two hundred and forty million.” Roman responded.

Haylee began to get anxious. She fidgeted in her seat as she looked between Roman and Hamilton. She believed Hamilton could pay for the ring, but that Roman was putting his life in danger, so she spoke up.

“Roman, stop this foolishness at once!”

“And who do you think you are to give me orders?” He asked sternly.

Haylee’s eyes widened. Roman had never spoken to her in this manner before, and she didn’t really know how to handle it. He always used to be so sweet to her. But not anymore. She was the one who divorced him after all.

“I’m trying to help you. Don’t act so impulsively. If you’re doing this to try and impress me, then it won’t work. Just stop.” She said and Roman chuckled.

“My world no longer revolves around you, Haylee. Why would I do this to impress you?” He asked and she flushed out of embarassment for saying that out loud.

“That black card you have is fake. You’ll just get yourself in trouble if you try to use it. The consequence on you wouldbe severe. Just give up now while you can still back out.” She pleaded with him but he just scoffed.

“You don’t need to worry about me.” Roman responded and turned way from her.

Haylee felt hurt that Roman dismissed her so callously in the presence of so many guests. Meanwhile, Hamilton was gloating. He decided to further humiliate Roman more by raising the bid and making him look more foolish.

“Two hundred and fifty million dollars!” Hamilton said.

He was more confident now, even though he would have to take out loans in order to pay for the high bid without going bankrupt. No one else was willing to bid for the ring at such a high amount.

Besides, Hamilton was sure that if he got the ring for such a high amount, it would attract the attention of the owner of the auction house. He heard the owner was very powerful and very influential.

If he could get in the owner’s good graces, that would mean more connections for his business. He would be able to get more profotable contracts that would replace all the money he spent on the ring.

“He doesn’t even realise that he’s making a fool of himself. If only I could show him how much you have in your black card, then he’ll realise how stupid he is for even thinking he can outbid you.” Annabel said to Roman and shook her head at Hamilton’s petty behaviour.

She knew he didn’t have enough money to pay so high for the ring. As a senior director at the most sought after bank, she had an idea of the range of wealth of each guest that had an account at the Prime Royale bank.

“I’ve gotten tired of haggling with him. It’s time to end this.” Roman said and raised his biddling pad.

“Four hundred million dollars.”

That was almost double the price Hamilton had bid. Sweat began to roll down Hamilton’s forehead, and he began to bite his fingernails out of anxiety.

He didn’t want to lose face, but he had never even handled such an amount of money in his life. If he bid higher now, he knew he wouldn’t be able to pay, but he refused to lose to Roman. He tried to raise his bidding pad, but Roman beat him to it.

“Five hundred million dollars for the ring.”

  • She Refused To Team

As they had initially discussed, Roman's legal team had reached out to Annabel's own legal team. The call from Roman's lawyer reached Victor that mid morning. Martin had placed the call himself.“Good day, Mr Hosè,” he started smoothly with a professional tone, “I am calling from the Averne Company. I am one of Mr Averne's legal representatives. I have called to inform you that we would like to propose a collaborative approach, given as our teams are aligned in goal and burden. A united front may serve both clients — and this case — better.”There was a long pause on the other end of the line. Then, “Let me get in touch with my client, and get back to you,” Victor replied. “Thank you very much.” Victor immediately phoned Annabel. “Annabel, I just received a call from a legal representative of Mr Averne's, saying that they would like to join us in this case,” Victor said immediately Annabel picked up the phone. “No. I want nothing to do with them.” Annabel said flatly. “What if th

Kade had indeed called Martin as Roman ordered, to tell him about Lara being fired. Martin in turn called Roman and they arrived at the decision to further interrogate Lara and get more information out of her, should they need it. The interrogation was to take place the very next day. The interrogation was to take place in the boardroom. Already seated around the long table were Roman, Martin, and other lawyers in the team. Lara stood right at the center of the table. She hadn’t sat down, even though there was a chair there for her. She was fidgeting and stealing glances at Roman every few seconds. He had not spoken since she entered, and she knew how angry he was. It was the silver haired lawyer in their midst that started. Martin took his phone, put it on and pressed record.“Miss Morell,” the man started as he flipped open the small leather notebook in front of him, “You’ve already admitted to breaching internal protocols. But now we need specifics. Who approached you? What did

  • Fired And Disgraced

The next morning, Roman arrived at his office way earlier than usual. He didn’t greet anyone in the hallway or even nod at the receptionist as he usually did. He went straight to his office, shut the door, and told his assistant not to let anyone in unless he called for them. Ten minutes later, he called for someone."Get Lara Morell up here. Now.""Yes, sir." The assistant said immediately. Lara was sitting silently and shamefully at her desk when she got a call that the CEO wanted to see her. Immediately she heard the word 'CEO,' she knew she was in deep trouble. She got up and made her way to the last floor where Roman's office was situated. When she finally entered the office some five minutes later, her steps were very slow and had no confidence in them. She carried her tablet as support for her idle hands, but didn’t open it. Roman was behind his desk, staring at something on his screen. He didn’t look up immediately. "Sit." He ordered. She obeyed and sat down. A long silenc

  • The Easy Part

Annabel received the call from Victor early the next morning just as she woke up. Victor's voice on the other end was steady even though it was very early in the morning, which meant that he had been working the whole night."The injunction held," he said, skipping the pleasantries. "The court accepted our pre-filing position, and there will be no movement from their side to counter it, so we have that advantage now."Annabel nodded. "That's very good. What about the lawsuit?""Yes, about that... the final copy is ready. I have organized all the documentation, exhibits, and testimonial references. I will get them court stamped right after this call, and then when the judge approves the service, we can go live."Annabel sighed. "How long will this take?""Seventy two hours max," Victor said. There was a long pause. Then Annabel said, "Okay. Let’s do it."Victor let another bout of silence settle between them for a breath before he continued. "This means you’ll be public again. Once th

  • Cut Off

Victor Hosè arrived at Freya's apartment only a few minutes after noon. Annabel was already waiting near the entrance for him by the time he came. She greeted him with a kiss on his cheek and let him in. Freya had offered to stay in the kitchen to give them space, but Annabel had asked her to stay nearby. After all, everything they were about to discuss had been a joint effort.Victor was a tall man in his mid-forties. He was dressed in a gray suit, and had a quiet kind of authority that didn’t ask for attention. He was the type of man who commanded respect without making a sound, and Annabel trusted him because of it.He paused at the doorway, looked around the apartment, and then at her.“You’re thinner,” he noted without judgment.“long story.” she replied as she let him in.He nodded once, dropped his briefcase on the small table, and unbuttoned his jacket. “Let’s get started.”They sat together in the living room — Annabel and Victor sat on the couch, while Freya sat on the armre

Freya left Janice’s house just after seven the next morning. A taxi waited for her at the curb, while Janice stood and watched her go at the front door in her robe, and a cup of coffee in her hand.“You will keep in touch, won’t you?” she asked with a smile that did not reach her eyes.Freya nodded, forcing a matching smile. “Of course.”Janice leaned in and kissed Freya on the cheek before she went to the taxi. “You’ve grown so much, Freya. I’m glad you came back.”Freya said nothing. She smiled again and nodded. She got into the taxi, gave the driver the address to her apartment, and stared out through the window as the engine came to life and drove them away. When she arrived at her place, she was surprised to find the door already slightly open.
