Kai’s POV

“Congratulations to the students who placed among the winners today.”

A cheer explodes through the arena. I’m standing alone as Aelia left after that little charade I played with Orin. A hand grabs my shoulder from behind, I turn and see Jafser. “You did it!”

I stare, mumbling. “Thank you.”

The instructor continues. “Although we have only one spectacular team, groups with two points and above have earned an additional privilege.”

“A privilege?” someone whispers.

The arena immediately becomes quieter as everyone stares questioningly.

The instructor smiles knowingly. “For the next three days, these students will participate in a controlled dungeon expedition.”

Before I can make sense of what he said, the arena explodes again, much louder this time.

I stare at Jafser as he jumps around excitedly. What in the hell is going on?

He looks at me, noticing my confusion. “What? Don’t tell me you don’t know what he means?”

“If I did, I’m certain you would see it on my face.”

His eyes widen dramatically. “You really don’t know?”

I stare silently, and he suddenly grabs my shoulders. “We’re going into a dungeon!”

“I heard him.”

“No. You heard the words. You don’t understand what they mean.”

I push his hand away. “Then explain.”

He lowers his voice like he’s about to tell me a royal secret. “A dungeon expedition involves magical cores, artifacts, the actual ones, not the replica junk they show us in class. Ranking points that actually matter. Real combat experience against real monsters instead of controlled training dummies that flinch when you sneeze at them.”

I don’t know how I feel about that last one. I just one four points against controlled dummy monsters. “Okay…”

“And…” he drops his voice again. “Three days in a private house. Away from dorm curfew. Away from professors eyes. Away from supervision.”

He wiggles his brows like I’m supposed to understand what he means. “Okay cool, but I still don’t understand why everyone’s this excited.”

He looks at me like I’ve grown a second head.

“Man, you’re hopeless.”

“Why?”

“You want me to spell it out? Three days. Boys and girls. Private house,” he practically yells.

“So?”

He lowers his voice even further. “Soooo, enough time for you and Aelia to spend together.” He bursts out laughing foolishly like he just said something interesting.

I stare. “So an assignment is given but you’re thinking about girls?”

“I’m thinking about…opportunities.”

I shake my head, laughing softly. A few students around laugh until the instructor’s voice cuts through again with one final announcement.

“The academy will provide accommodation near the dungeon entrance. Your meals and equipment will be supplied as usual. And You are expected to follow every instruction given by your assigned leader.”

Jafser looks around. “Who is our assigned leader?” He looks back at me, eyes picking up a glint. “Oh, maybe it’ll be you.”

“Are you kidding?” Someone speaks from behind. “No matter how impressive he is, he is still a D-level mage. Something he probably got through luck.”

I throw the speaker a sharp look and he cowers quickly but continues. “We’ll have higher level majes in each group, surely that position is reserved for them.”

“You never can tell, Damon. The instructor may surprise all of us,” Jafser jokes and we all laugh again until someone clears his throat behind us. I turn and see Orin standing there.

About time. I expected him to come punch me sooner. Jafser’s eyes widen suddenly as if he has seen a ghost.

“What is it, Jafser?” I ask urgently. He doesn’t say anything but instead uses his eyes to direct me to something. That’s when I see it. The leadership badge pasted on Orin’s chest.

“Team four,” he yells, calling the group members together. Our eyes meet for a second and he just smirks before looking at the group. “I’ve been appointed team leader.”

A few students clap. Jafser is about to do same but looks at me and stops which I hate. I’m not stopping anyone from doing what they like. “Congratulations,” I say flatly.

He smiles. “Thank you.”

I must confess it’s an easy, warm smile. The kind I don’t expect from someone like him.

He looks at me. “Look, I know we’ve had our differences.” He says it loudly enough for everyone to hear. “But we’re teammates now and I want this expedition to go smoothly. For all of us. Okay?”

I study him, trying to catch what game he’s playing. Not too long ago, he looked red when I held his girl but now he’s smiling and throwing peaceful talks at me? Hmm.

“Fine,” I say.

“Great,” he follows, then he steps closer and claps me once on the shoulder like we’re old friends. I don’t give any reaction.

He turns toward the others. “We leave in one hour. Make sure you have everything you need. The academy will provide the expedition equipment, but bring anything personal you might need for three days.”

The group starts talking amongst themselves while I keep watching Orin. Jafser leans toward me as soon as Orin turns his back.

“That was weirdly civil.”

“Yeah, tell me about it.”

“Do you think he means any of it?”

I lock my jaw. “Whether he means it or not has nothing to do with me. As long as he respects himself on this trip, we’ll have no issues.”

Jafser’s brows raise. And to my surprise, he doesn’t immediately make a joke. That is a sign.

“I guess you’re right. I mean it’s not like he’ll sabotage the team he’s leading. Right?”

I don’t answer.

We leave within the hour—all seven of us towards our destination. The Harlen dungeon house they called it.

Jafser has spent the entire walk telling me l about the kinds of artifacts he hopes to find.

I barely hear him but I don’t think he cares at all.

Finally, the house comes into view but I don’t see the dungeon. “Where is the dungeon?”

“Behind the house, silly. You don’t expect them to keep it out front, do you?”

“Of course not.”

Okay, that was a silly question, I admit.

The house is much larger than I expected.

It’s a Three stores building with Dark stone walls that automatically makes you know something terrifying is probably lurking around.

“That’s our house?” Jafser asks.

Orin nods. “And I’m sure we’re all going to have fun inside it.” He smiles and stops beside me. Although I don’t remember inviting him.

“I know this is your first time, Kai. If you need anything, let me know.”

I really want to call him out on his bullshit but then, I’ll be the problematic new student who refuses to let things go.

“Thanks,” I say quietly.

“You’re quiet.”

“I’m always quiet.”

He laughs. “True.” He pauses briefly then continues. “I mean it, though. About starting clean.”

I look at him. “Yeah I get. Three days is a long time to hold a grudge in such close quarters.”

“Exactly.” He puts his hand out for a shake and I take it. We finally get inside the house that seems to grow larger the deeper we go and students start trying to pick the perfect room.

I glance at Aelia and realize I haven’t seen her since that incident. Is she now avoiding me?Silly girl.

“Race you upstairs.” Jafser comes out of nowhere, interrupting my moment. “No.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re going to lose.”

He grins. “Just say you’re scared to lose.”

I smirk, about to take the challenge when Orin claps his hands, drawing everyone’s attention. “Please confirm your gears are correct and complete, and don’t forget the briefing later in the evening.”

A few students groan.

“Yeah, yeah. For now, go get settled in and rest. We’ve got three days to make this count.” He looks towards me briefly, then smiles.

Everyone starts moving again and arguments continue over rooms. I try to look out for the silly girl until Jafser grabs my sleeve. “You ready? Let’s go.” He doesn’t even wait for my answer and just starts pulling me toward the boy’s side of the house.

“We need to choose our rooms before someone steals the good ones.”

“What’s a good room?”

“One far away from Orin.”

His answer makes me look back at Orin who’s still just directing everyone with a smiley face. However, I can’t help the strange feeling that something feels out of place. Something about this expedition might go wrong.

Kai’s POVWe step onto our own arena where five creatures are already waiting in cages. The instructor raises his hand—a sign that we should be ready. .“Stay behind me,” I say to her before I can stop myself.“Absolutely not.” Her reply catches me off guard. I throw her a look. “I’m only looking out for you.”“And I don’t remember asking.”I scoff and look away. “Fine. Do whatever you want.” I draw my weapon.“Yeah, you too. And try not to die.”“Maybe you should tell that to the monster. I don’t know if you missed it, but it’s me whoever everyone is scared of, not the monster.” I tighten my grip on my sword. She rolls her eyes. “Proud much.”The bell rings and we charge at the release creature. I barely blink before she gets to him and slash through him swiftly. A flash of blue magic shoots into its chest and It stumbles backward.I’m so surprised that I take a moment to marvel at her, but she doesn’t stop. “Are you planning to fight,” she looks over her shoulder, “or just stand t

  • Making Partners

Aelia’s POVThe instructor drops a stack of papers onto his desk. “You know the drill, Partners, now.”Everyone scatters around, searching for their favorite persons to partner up with. The academy has no problemswith you working with a friend as long as you bring results. “I chose her first.”“No, I did. She’s my friend.”I quietly watch as they argue amongst themselves. Then I turn toward him. He’s still sitting alone. Nobody has approached him and they won’t. Yes, they want to be connected to him but for something like this, they’re too uncertain and terrified of him to choose him as a partner. Void magic? What if they try to attack a monster and their partner swallows their magic instead. “Kai,” the instructor calls. “You need a partner.”He doesn’t even look up. “No. I’ll work alone.”“You can’t. Everyone gets a partner because the assignment requires it.”He locks his jaw and looks around the room but he quickly sees it’s useless. Everyone is physically hiding from him.He t

  • The Tables Have Turned

Kai's POV: As early as the next day, I’m already summoned to the teachers office. “Kai Blackwell, do you know why you’re here today?”I look at them. “Yes. I used the void magic.”The headmaster seems to flinch. “And do you know it is considered a forbidden magic?”“Not to the best of my knowledge. I haven’t been studying well, that's why I’ve been failing.” It’s a lie but that’s what they get. The man looks amused for a moment. “Okay. You do know it is considered impossible too?”“So I’ve heard.”“So how did a failing student manage to do that?”“I don’t know, sir. It just happened to me. I have no control over what magic comes out of me.”His eyes darken at me. “Fine. You may leave.”As I walk to class, I notice a change in the hallway. Unlike when I first came when they all had something to laugh about, it is quieter now.“That’s him,” one whispers. “Wait, the student-mage with the void power?”“Yes. He absorbed a D-Rank spell.”“That’s impossible.”“I saw it. The fire literall

  • THE ANNUAL CONTEST

Kai’s POVI walk into the arena of their annual contest, every part of me filled with venom for those people that threw me down there. Someone points to me, “He’s alive. How is that possible?” Every eyes settle on me with shock, including Orin and his goons. I’m not surprised by their reaction. Even me, I’m still surprised by how I got out. All I did was touch the lock and it opened. Vazaroth told me to lock after. One thing is certain, if he wanted to leave, he would have. Orin and his goons laugh as they walk towards me?“You’re alive? I thought the dungeon would kill you for sure,” one says.“He probably crawled out,” another adds.Unlike them, Orin doesn’t look the least bit calm. He follows me until I stop in front of the registration board.“What are you doing here?” I can sense some kind of nervousness from him. He really didn’t expect me to make it out alive. He left me for dead. I don’t answer him and just pick up the marker to write my name.“Are you deaf? I said what do y

  • Vazaroth, the demon god.

Kai’s POVI clutch my chest, unable to breathe. Those eyes, I know them. I’ve seen them before. It wasn’t in person but in books and paintings. My heart pounds harder.“No…”The creature gives me a small smile. “You know who I am?”My mouth goes dry. I want to get up and run but I know it’s useless. My legs are basically paralyzed from shock. “No. That’s impossible.”Its smile disappears. “Impossible? Why is that?”I shake my head. “You’re not supposed to be here.”It lets out a quiet laugh, the sound echoing throughout the dungeon. “Where did they tell you they kept me?”I don’t answer but I know what he means because I know who he is. The horns, the black skin covered with binding markings, the huge wings folded behind his back and the chains wrapped around his body. There is no mistaking it.He’s Vazaroth, the demon god. The first and most powerful ruler of the demons. Everyone in the kingdom knows about him and his long list of crimes.Eight hundred years ago, he had supposedly
