"Looking for a snack, beggar? Or is the academy finally feeding the trash to the trash?"

All of Alex's attempts to hide from the crowd in the academy market by placing a hoodie over his head failed as he was quickly spotted by another group of arrogant student elites.

Julian’s voice dripped with so much arrogance and irritation as he walked towards the stall that Alex stood.

He stood at the center of the path, flanked by three other noble students who looked like they’d never seen a day of hard work in their lives.

Julian’s nose wrinkled, his fingers twitching as he adjusted the expensive silk of his robes.

He stared at the blackened, shriveled "Rotten Shadow Fruit" sitting on the back-alley stall with a look of pure physical pain.

Alex didn't look up. He kept his hood low, his fingers hovering over the fruit. "I’m just buying what you’re too stupid to use, Julian. Go back to the main square. I’m sure there’s a mirror somewhere missing your face."

The noble students behind Julian gasped, their faces turning into masks of shock. Julian’s upper lip curled, revealing teeth that were too white and too perfect.

"You’ve got a lot of nerve for someone whose father smells like horse piss," Julian spat. He reached over and swiped a cluster of Bone-Ash Weeds from the vendor’s table, tossing them into a puddle of muddy runoff at Alex’s feet.

"Since you like garbage so much, have some more. My beast wouldn't even walk on these, but they suit a family of stable-shovels perfectly. Go on. Pick them up."

The group erupted in rhythmic, mocking laughter.

Julian stepped forward, his heavy leather boot coming down right on top of the shriveled weeds, grinding them into the muck.

Alex grunted, his nails digging into his palms but he kept his cool.

"Oops," Julian whispered, leaning in so close that Alex could smell the expensive floral wine on his breath.

"My foot slipped. But a dog like you doesn't mind a little dirt, right? Scrub it off. Maybe you’ll find a copper coin in the mud if you dig deep enough."

Alex’s hands clenched into fists inside his sleeves. He felt the heat of humiliation rising up his neck, a familiar fire that had burned in him since he was a child.

He watched Julian’s boot twist, destroying the very thing the System had identified as a "Divine Catalyst."

Stupid, arrogant bastards, Alex thought. He didn't let the anger show on his face. He kept his expression as flat as a stone.

"Are you done?" Alex asked, his voice deathly quiet. "Or do you need to piss on the floor to mark your territory too?"

Julian’s eyes flashed with a dangerous light. He raised a hand as if to strike, but one of his friends grabbed his arm. "Not here, Julian. The supervisor is just a block away. Let the trash rot in his own pile."

Julian pulled his arm away, sneering. "Fine. Enjoy your lunch, beggar. Make sure you get every bit of that mud. It’s the closest thing to a beast-resource you’ll ever touch."

The group walked away, their silk capes fluttering like the wings of vultures. Alex waited until their footsteps faded before he knelt in the mud.

He ignored the stares of the other shoppers. He dug his fingers into the cold, wet earth, pulling out the mangled remains of the Bone-Ash Weeds.

[Item Detected: Ancient Bone-Ash (Mangled)]

[Purity: 98%] [System Note: The physical structure is damaged, but the essence is intact. The fools have essentially pre-crushed the materials for you. Initializing extraction...]

Alex let out a short, sharp snicker. Julian had thought they were humiliating when they were actually giving him what he needed.

Alex stuffed the mud-caked weeds and the rotten fruit into his bag, his heart hammering a steady, predatory rhythm. They were feeding their beasts expensive, flashy sugar that did nothing but make them look pretty. He was holding the raw, ugly power of evolution.

Back in the cold, leaky shed that served as his room, Alex didn't bother lighting a candle.

He sat on the dirt floor, spreading the "trash" out in front of him.

The mutt sat in the corner, its ribs still visible, and its hairless skin shivering in the draft. It watched Alex with eyes that seemed to grow deeper, darker, as if it understood the stakes.

"It’s now or never," Alex whispered. He followed the glowing blue blueprints that only he could see, crushing the Shadow Fruit and the Bone-Ash into a thick paste.

"If this kills you, I’m right behind you. They

won't let me live through the week anyway."

The dog didn't hesitate. It lapped up the bitter, dark paste with a hunger that was almost frightening.

Almost instantly, the temperature in the shed dropped. A low hum started to vibrate through the floorboards, a sound so deep it felt like it was coming from the center of the earth.

Black smoke began to leak from the dog’s skin, mixed together with a faint glow.

Alex sat against the door, his hands gripped around his knees. He didn't blink. He watched the shadows dance and swirl around the beast, listening to the sound of bones cracking and shifting.

Every time the dog let out a low, muffled groan, Alex felt a sympathetic ache in his own chest.

The silence in the arena didn't last. It was soon, replaced by a wave of frantic whispers and nervous laughter. No one wanted to believe what they had just seen. A scholarship student from the slums had just sent the academy’s golden boy through a stone pillar with a single punch wad an impossible reality to picture. It was impossible. It was a glitch in the universe."He slipped!" someone shouted from the upper tiers. "Did you see that? Chris must have lost his footing right when he swung. The scavenger just got lucky and caught him off balance!""Exactly," Julian added, his voice trembling as he clutched his bandaged jaw. "Chris has been training day and night. He hasn’t even eaten properly for three days to sharpen his senses. He’s exhausted! That’s the only reason that piece of filth stayed on his feet."The lie caught fire instantly. It was a comforting blanket that the noble students wrapped themselves in. They couldn't afford a reality where Alex was stronger. They mocked

The grouping arena was a sea of noise, but it was a one-sided sound. Thousands of students were shouting Chris’s name, their voices merging into a low, rhythmic chant that vibrated through the stone floor. To them, this wasn't a duel; it was a public execution. They wanted to see the "scavenger" put back in his place. They wanted to see the dirt stay in the dirt."You really should have just taken the apology and run," Liora said, her voice cutting through the noise as she stood near Alex in the preparation area. She looked at him with that same complicated expression—disgust mixed with a flickering, unwanted curiosity. "By accepting this, you’ve given him a legal reason to break you. Don't look at me for help when you’re being carried out on a stretcher."Alex didn't look at her. He was busy adjusting the straps of his basic-issue battle suit. It was a worn, gray thing made of reinforced leather and cheap fiber, meant to dampen blows during training. Compared to the shimmering, go

The tension in the grouping arena was so thick hearing Chris say these words.Dark arts in the tamers world were utterly forbidden and mostly disgraceful.Liora, the girl from Greduant who had spent the night in Alex’s room, stood a few paces away. Her eyes were fixed on Alex, but they weren't filled with the gratitude he might have expected from a roommate. Instead, her face was twisted in deep, disgust. "Dark arts?" Liora whispered, her voice carrying just enough to reach the surrounding students. She looked at Julian, who was still nursing his bandaged jaw and trembling whenever the Shadow Stalker moved. "I knew you were a lowly commoner, but to use forbidden soul-shrinking techniques to win a fight? That isn't just disgraceful, it’s criminal. My academy would have had your head for such a stunt."Alex turned his head slightly, giving her a look that was more bored than defensive. "You’ve been here for less than twenty-four hours and you already think you’re a judge? I won that

Alex could sense the heat of her disdain pulsing off from her words.“Is this the low techniques poor pervs like you pull of lately?” She sneered, bringing Alex back to reality. He could feel the metallic taste of irritation on his tongue. Another high and mighty horse who thought they could trample on anyone that they come across.“Don't you have a wide mouth for someone that's is trespassing into another person's room?” Alex raised his key cards, revealing the room number that was written on it.The girl, whose name was Liora, moved off from the bed with practiced grace."I see," she whispered, her voice suddenly turning sharp as glass. “So you want me to believe that in some way, this is also your room? You perv?”“You must have searched for my status, and then come up with a forced proximity plan. But what do you think, that we're living in novels? You sickly poor bastard?”Alex frowned, his brow furrowing in genuine confusion and a tat miss of irritation"Searched? I don't even

  • Chapter 6

Julian stood in the center of the training yard, his arm still frozen in a pointing gesture. He looked like a statue of a fool. The crowd was so silent that the distant sound of a bird felt like a thunderclap. His Flame Lion—the pride of the Hummer family, an S-tier beast that was supposed to be invincible—was gone. It had tucked its tail and run like a beaten street cur, leaving a trail of melting frost on the stone floor."Lion? Flare? Get back here!" Julian finally croaked, his voice cracking. He reached into his belt and pulled out a handful of high-grade fire crystals, the kind that cost more than a year of Alex’s tuition. "I have your favorite treats! Come back!"But the only response he got was a silent defiance that echoed his defeat.Julian’s face went from pale to a ghostly white. He turned toward the shadows where his beast had vanished, then back to Alex. The arrogance that usually sat on his face like a crown had been shattered into a thousand pieces. He knew the impl

The laughter stopped instantly. The silence that followed was heavy and cold. Kael’s face turned an ugly, dark purple, the veins in his neck bulging like snakes."What did you say to me?" Kael hissed. The Flame Lion sensed its master’s rage and let out a low, bone-shaking growl. The air around the beast began to shimmer with heat."I said you’re a servant in fancy clothes," Alex said, stepping closer. He dropped the rag into the dust. "If you want your beast cleaned, do it yourself. I’m busy."Kael’s eyes went wide with fury. "You’re dead. You think because you awakened a stray dog that you’re a tamer? I’ll have my lion rip your throat out and the teachers will call it an 'accident during training'."Kael pointed a finger at Alex. "Lion! Teach this beggar his place! Bite off his hand!"The Flame Lion roared, a sound that made the weaker students cover their ears. It lunged forward, its flaming claws extended, aiming directly for Alex’s head."You've got hands, Julian," Alex said, his
