The clock hanging above the chalkboard ticked with a rhythmic, agonizing precision. Every strike against the silence sounded like a gavel deciding the fate of the students huddled over their desks.
Leon Vargas didn’t look at his own paper. He didn’t need to. The Advanced Arcane Theory exam was child’s play to him, a tedious collection of questions he’d memorized back in his freshman year. Instead, his gaze drifted to the left, where Julian sat, hunched over his mahogany desk. Julian was practically vibrating. His pen hovered over the parchment, trembling so violently that blotches of ink were already ruining his grade.
"Hey, breathe, man," Leon whispered, his voice barely audible over the scratching of pens. "You’re gonna snap the nib if you keep squeezing it like that."
Julian didn't look up. His complexion had turned a sickly, translucent shade of gray. "I can’t, Leon. I studied for weeks. I know this stuff. But look at my hand. It’s like I’m looking at a stranger’s limb."
"You’re spiraling. Just reset," Leon said, leaning back. He felt that familiar, prickling arrogance the sense that he was already ten steps ahead of everyone in this room. "If you fail this, you’re stuck in Remedial Arts for another semester. Do you really want to spend your summer staring at the same four walls?"
"Don't.. don't talk about it. Just focus on your own damn paper," Julian hissed, though his voice cracked at the end. He wiped sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand, leaving a smear of ink across his skin. "I’m choking. It’s like the room is shrinking. I can’t get the formulas to stick."
Leon watched him, feeling a sudden, strange impulse. It wasn't pity, pity was for people who didn't have the stomach to survive the Academy. It was curiosity. He looked at Julian’s neck, seeing the frantic pulse hammering against the skin like a trapped bird.
"You want me to help you?" Leon asked, his tone dropping an octave.
"What? You’re going to get us both kicked out for cheating. Shut up."
"Not cheating," Leon murmured. He closed his eyes for a split second, reaching into the space between his own ribs. He’d felt it before, that odd, cold static that lived at the base of his mind, but he’d always suppressed it, fearing it might be some kind of latent defect. Today, he didn't suppress it. He shoved it outward.
He focused on the trembling in Julian’s hands. He focused on the raw, suffocating terror radiating off his friend like heat from a radiator. He pushed his will into that space, envisioning the panic as a physical object, a knot of dark, tangled wire and squeezed.
"Leon? What the hell are you—"
Julian stopped mid-sentence. His shoulders, which had been hunched up toward his ears, suddenly dropped. His grip on the pen loosened. The frantic, erratic shaking of his hand ceased as if a ghost had reached out and held his wrist steady.
"Whoa," Julian whispered. He looked at his own hand, then looked back at Leon, his eyes wide and vacant of their previous frantic edge. "How... how did you do that?"
"Do what?" Leon asked, though he felt a sudden, sharp ache bloom behind his eyes.
"The room. The noise. The pressure. It all just... stopped," Julian said, his voice coming out unnervingly flat. "I was terrified a second ago, and now I feel like I’m sitting on a beach somewhere. I don’t even care if I fail anymore. That’s not normal, is it?"
"Just write the test, Julian," Leon muttered. A cold, hollow drain had opened up in his chest, a sensation akin to losing a quart of blood in a matter of seconds. It felt clinical, icy, and deeply unnatural.
"You’re really strange, you know that?" Julian laughed, a soft, carefree sound that didn't fit the high-stress environment of the exam hall. He picked up his pen with fluid, graceful movements. "Whatever you did, it feels like I’ve got a clear head for the first time in my life. It’s... it’s actually kind of addictive."
"Keep it down," Leon said, though he was busy staring at his own palm.
His skin looked pale, almost translucent under the harsh flickering of the overhead magical lamps. He couldn't feel his pulse. It was as if he’d traded his own internal rhythm to anchor someone else’s. The arrogance that usually fueled him was gone, replaced by a hungry, hollow void that demanded to be filled.
"You okay?" Julian asked, his eyes darting toward Leon. He was already flying through the exam, his ink flowing perfectly. "You look like you’ve seen a ghost."
"I'm fine," Leon forced out, though his tongue felt heavy. "Just stay focused. You have twenty minutes left."
"I’m finished," Julian said, leaning back and stretching his arms. He looked vibrant, invigorated, his face flush with a color that made him look like a different person. "That was easy. Actually, that was way too easy. How did you do that, Leon? What was that feeling?"
Leon didn't answer. He watched Julian, observing the way the light seemed to catch the boy's skin, the way his movements were suddenly so precise, so devoid of the human hesitation that plagued everyone else. Leon had reached into the ether of another person's psyche and ironed out the creases of their soul. It was intoxicating. It was dangerous.
It was a violation of everything the Academy taught, and yet, the power felt perfectly tailored to him.
"Leon? You spacing out?" Julian leaned in closer, his voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper. "If you can do that to people, you’re not just some high-tier student. You’re a weapon. You realize that, right? You could make anyone do anything if you could strip away their nerves like that."
"I said be quiet," Leon snapped, his voice sharp enough to make Julian pull back.
"Geez, touchy," Julian chuckled, but there was a flicker of something new in his eyes, not fear, but a dawning, frantic sort of worship. "Whatever you want, man. I owe you. Seriously."
Leon ignored him, pulling his gaze back to his own hand. He curled his fingers into a fist, feeling the slight vibration of his own aura, a dormant, jagged energy he hadn't fully realized was there until he’d poured it out into the room. It hadn't left him entirely. It was just... hiding, waiting for a catalyst.
Was it a one-time thing? he wondered.
He looked around the room. The air felt heavy, saturated with the frantic, repressed anxieties of thirty other students. He could feel it now, a dull, rhythmic thrumming against his senses, like a distant storm on the horizon. He realized he could reach out and touch it. He could reach out and silence the entire room, turn them all into mindless, frictionless puppets.
The prospect made his blood run cold, yet his skin burned with a desperate need to try again.
"Leon," Julian whispered, nudging his desk. "The proctor is looking this way. You finished?"
Leon didn't look at the proctor. He didn't look at his paper. He was staring at the space between his fingers, waiting for the cold to fade, waiting for the power to pulse again.
"Not yet," Leon breathed, his voice barely a tremor in the stillness.
He held his hand out, watching the shadows of the room dance against his skin. He wondered, with a sickening thrill, if he could take that calm away from Julian just as easily as he’d given it. Could he make someone shatter? Could he rewrite the way a person felt about their own existence?
The room felt like an open wound, and Leon was the only one holding the stitches. He curled his fingers tighter, his knuckles turning white, and felt that icy drain in his chest ripple.
I can do it again, he thought, his heart hammering against his ribs. I don’t just want to control it. I want to see how much of them I can take.
He looked at his reflection in the polished wood of his desk. He looked hungry, sharp, and terrifyingly cold. He didn't look like a student anymore. He looked like something entirely different. And as the clock ticked down to the final minute, Leon Vargas let the darkness inside him expand, ready to see exactly how much pressure the world could take before it broke.

8. Unforeseen Consequences
The silence in Leon’s room was absolute, a perfect, unbreachable sphere that had swallowed him whole. He had locked the door, slid down the cool wood until his back met the floorboards, and stared at his hands. They looked like polished marble, devoid of warmth, of sensation, of life itself. He was the architect, he had whispered to the stillness. The silence had only waited, hungry.Morning arrived not with sunlight, but with the muted, oppressive glow of the Academy’s internal lighting. Leon remained on the floor, his body a cold, unresponsive shell. The night had offered no respite, no flicker of human feeling. He had achieved the void, the chilling emptiness he’d craved. Yet, as the minutes bled into hours, a new sensation began to stir, an alien, unwelcome tremor deep within the hollow space where his heart should have been.He finally forced himself to stand, his movements stiff, robotic. The Advanced Rhetoric seminar was scheduled for mid-morning. He couldn't afford to miss it,
7. Intimate Shadows
The air in the hallway was still thick with the metallic tang of spent magic and the residual heat of a dozen panicked heartbeats. Leon stood in the center of the wreckage, the golden sigil on his wrist still pulsing with a faint, dying ember of light. The students around him remained frozen, their expressions vacant, their breathing shallow and rhythmic a synchronized chorus of the silence he had forced upon them.Putri stood a few feet away, her chest heaving slightly, her gaze darting between the slumped bodies of the rioters and the glowing brand on Leon’s arm."Leon," she whispered, the name barely escaping her lips. "Look at them. You didn't just stop the fight. You turned them into a mirror."Leon didn't look at the students. He couldn't. His gaze was anchored to his own trembling hand. The connection was receding, leaving behind a hollow, aching void that felt twice as large as it had an hour ago."I didn't want this," Leon said, his voice flat and brittle."You wanted to own
6. The First Crack
The shadows in the alcove seemed to pulse with a life of their own, coiling around Leon and Putri like smoke. The air was heavy, charged with that metallic, ozone-heavy scent that had followed him since the exam. Leon could feel the golden sigil on his wrist burning a frantic, rhythmic heat that demanded to be spent."Wait," Leon breathed, his voice tight. "Did you hear that?"Putri tilted her head, her dark eyes shimmering with an unreadable light. "Hear what, Leon? The sound of your own ambition, or the sound of the world starting to fray at the edges?"Before he could answer, a shout echoed from the main corridor, followed by the sickening thud of a fist hitting bone."Don't give me that, Kael! You think just because you’re a legacy you can step over anyone you want?"Leon pushed past Putri, stepping out into the hallway. Two students Kael, a hulking upperclassman with a reputation for casual cruelty, and a younger, frantic-looking boy, were locked in a heated standoff. Kael had th

The black feather grew warm against Leon’s palm, a rhythmic pulse of heat that seemed to synchronize with the golden sigil on his wrist. He squeezed his fingers, feeling the delicate barbs of the quill snap under the pressure. The room felt too small, the air thick with the residue of the entity’s presence. He looked at his reflection in the mirror pale, sharp-featured, and eyes that held a new, predatory clarity."I’m still here," he muttered, his voice cold. "I’m still in control."He threw the broken feather into the wastebasket and grabbed his bag. The Advanced Rhetoric seminar was in ten minutes. It was the last place he wanted to be, yet the thought of sitting still while someone else tried to command the room was suddenly intolerable.*The lecture hall was a tiered arena of mahogany and velvet. Students sat in hushed clusters, their nerves acting like a live wire running through the floorboards. At the center stood Professor Halloway, and beside him, Julian or rather, the vers
4. Whispers of Eros
The architecture of the research wing felt like the ribcage of a leviathan vast, stone-cold, and suffocatingly ancient. Leon moved with a gait that wasn't entirely his own, his boots barely making a sound on the marble floors. Beside him, Putri walked with a predatory grace, her eyes tracking the flickering golden sigil on his wrist as if it were a holy relic."You’re quiet, Leon," Putri murmured, her voice barely a ripple in the stagnant, dust-choked air of the corridor. "Usually, people start begging or asking questions when they realize their own body isn't taking orders from their brain anymore."Leon didn't look at her. His gaze was fixed forward, his focus anchored entirely on the dull, throbbing heat radiating from his skin. "I’m not begging. I’m just trying to figure out if I’m the one pulling the strings or if I’m the one being pulled.""Does it matter?" Putri stepped closer, the hem of her robes brushing against his trousers. "If the result is absolute control, if you can fi

The library doors groaned behind him, sealing with a final, heavy thud that reverberated in the hollow chamber of Leon’s chest. He didn't look back. The hallway was empty, bathed in the sickly, amber glow of dying gaslight. Every footstep Leon took felt like it belonged to a marionette, his legs moving with a terrifying, rhythmic grace that lacked the hesitation of a human gait."Just keep moving," Leon whispered, his voice sounding like dry leaves skittering across stone. "One foot in front of the other. It’s just blood sugar. It’s just exhaustion.""Are you talking to yourself, Vargas?"Leon stopped dead. Julian was leaning against a stone pillar ten feet ahead, his arms crossed over his chest. He looked different, sharper, his eyes holding a strange, predatory glitter that hadn't been there before the exam."I’m tired, Julian. That’s all," Leon said, his voice forced into a calm, melodic baritone. He felt the cold void in his chest expand, hungry for more silence."You look like yo
