While they continued to speak, the needle that John had placed pulled snapped off from the hands of Mr. Ken because they were not placed properly.

The old man fell unconscious almost immediately and began to jerk on the floor so hard that everyone in the room was grasping with so much shock.

Mabel pulled off from her father still trying to recover from the sudden shock that ran through every inch of her vines.

"Father!" Mabel even tried muttering but her words had suddenly run dry and only the ferocious beating of her heart could be heard at this instance.

She pulled frightened from the point that she was standing and walked gradually towards Doctor James who was already sweating really bad..

“Do something.“ She kept yelling at the top of her voice while John stood staring calmly.

Sweat dropped down from the side of the doctor's face while he tried to clean it off. His lips shuttered from the cold shivers that ran through his spine.

"I can do this!" He whispered ones that only him and one other person in the room would hear.

“Calm down Mabel! My skills are tested and trusted! I'm sure that this is nothing more than a minor issue that would be easily taken care of in a bit." Doctor James responded.

Walking up to Mr. Ken, they handed three needles to him and he placed them at the acupuncture point but instead of getting better, a whitish fume began to gush out from his mouth.

“Doctor James.. He is dying.“ Mabel's blood was running cold as she continued to yell out her lungs.

He stared at the old man this time not knowing what to do. He had done practically everything that he knew in his medical services.

Streams of sweat flowed down gradually from the corner of his face as he continued to stare at him, taking the needle and placing it on some other points but it only made things worse instead of getting better.

“You are only going to lead him to his early death. You have to try black toxin removal method “ John finally decided to say.

“Fool, do you realize that this is Doctor James? If he can't do anything do you think that you can?“ Tears flowed down from Mable's eyes why Ariel stood transfixed in her stare.

But he totally ignored Mabel as he continued talking to the doctor.

“Are you even listening to me?“ Mabel thundered.

“I don't think that Doctor James can do anything now. And you're practically out of options. Why don't you see if I can help?“ He shot a stare at him turning gradually towards the doctor who was already shivering out of fear.

"You fool! What do you think that you know!"

“Follow my instructions.“ John Ignored her once again and said to the doctor in a relaxed tone.

Take the first needle and place it under his arm.“ He instructed the doctor on what he was going to do to get the old man well once again and he followed every single detail of it.

“At the end, a slight gasp escaped from The lips of the old man who opened his eyes slowly.

“Thank you very much.“ The doctor appreciated cleaning off the sweat that had developed on his face.

Meanwhile, Mabel and Ariel rushed towards their father with tears in their eyes as he opened his eyes slowly.

“Father, are you okay now? “ They inquired almost at the same time.

“Yes, I am better now.“ He responded.

“I think that you guys should let him catch some breath. I only stopped the flow of the toxin and it hasn't been cured yet.“ He informed them making them get off his body

Meanwhile, Ariel turned around towards him almost immediately with a sigh of relief.

“Thanks a lot.“ She appreciated it.

“But can you tell us what is wrong with our father? “ She inquired further.

Mabel stood at the far end of the room, her face flushed with so much shame and embarrassment.

“He was poisoned.“ He noted with a frown on his face and he was not done with what he was saying.

“And that's not all… The poison is an ancient type of poison called the black poison.“ He affirmed.

“So deadly because the true cause of it can not easily be identified but I thought it had already gone extinct. Whoever brought it back.“ He paused suddenly turning around toward Helena

“Have there been any conflicts recently?“ He inquired but thinking about it for a while, she could not get anything around her head.

“Don't think too much about it.“ He finally ended.

Meanwhile, he walked towards the old man who was still lying on the bed and held his hands tightly.

Staring right into his eyes, he felt his pulse.

“It's becoming regular now.“ He affirmed.

“Sir. Did you perceive any strange but unique scent lately?“ He inquired.

Immediately he said the words, his inner mind seemed to be enlightened as his eyes brightened.

“Yes.“ The words came swiftly out from his mouth filled with so much revelation.

“You will have to tell me exactly where.“ He noted and he nodded his head.

“It was at a party a few nights ago.“ He noted but he didn't understand a single word of what he was saying.

She turned around slowly towards Ariel with his eyes beckoning on her for an explanation of what he just said.

“The joint party. But it was mainly a deliberation between our group and the previous partner, the new age business empire.“

“How powerful are they?“ He inquired and her eyes were farrowed almost immediately

She got the message that she was trying to pass across to him.

All this while, it seemed as though he had been locked off from the word of running errands for his wife's family.

“Almost at the same ranking.“ He replied.

“And any problem between you guys?“ John inquired further trying to get a grip on the story.

“They also have an eye on the city's reverse project. Could it be that they are the ones doing this?“ She thought.

She could already feel her anger rising so badly that she had to clutch her hands to control it.

“Most likely.“ He noted

A slight cough escaped from the mouth of the old man.

“I don't think that he can hold on for long. Can I get a pen and paper?“ He Inquired and without spitting a single word from her mouth, she beckoned to the guards and it was brought before him.

He wrote a list of things and handed it over to Ariel.

“I think those will be within your reach. I need them as soon as possible.“ He noted and she nodded her head.

Without a single form of hesitation, she stormed off from her seat and got off from the place.

Meanwhile, the doctor who had been standing there walked gradually towards him.

His eyes were filled with so much gratitude knowing what he had done for him.

“I appreciate it. You saved my long established career today and I owe you one in future. Don't hesitate to call me if you need any help.''He appreciated him while nodding his head.

“I know just a little about medicine.“ He noted making the doctor chuckle.

“And even with the little that you know, you were able to outsmart me with my wealth of experience.“ He smiled at him, tapping him slightly on his shoulders.

“Would you care to join me for dinner today?“ He inquired.

“As a sign of my appreciation.“

He wanted to oppose but in the end, accepted.

Soon, the door made a cracking sound and Ariel walked in with a guard holding the list of things that he had requested.

Without waiting for a single moment, he went down to work, mixing up the medicine after which he fed the old man with it.

At first, he felt unstable and thought something was moving in his stomach.

After which, he got off the bed and threw up into the bed that was right before him.

The greenish fluid that emitted a foul stink made everyone in the room hold their nostril.

“What the heck is that?“ He heard Ariel saying.

“That's the toxin from the Poison.“ He replied

JOHN'S POVThe announcement spreads through the Academy before anyone officially confirms it. That's how things work here. Rumors travel faster than notices, and by the time anything is posted officially, everyone already knows.I see it in the way instructors glance at me during training, then at Divo, then back again like they're mentally measuring the distance between us. Assistants linger near our stations longer than necessary. Conversations die when either of us enters a room, then restart in quieter, more careful tones. The tension becomes something physical, settling into my shoulders like weight I can't put down."You feel it too, right?" Thomas says during a break in training, leaning against the wall beside me. "The whole place feels like it's holding its breath.""I feel it," I confirm."How are you doing with it?" he asks."Trying not to run out of breath?" I say.He gives me a look that says he doesn't believe me. I don't push back on it because honestly, he's right not

Chapter 82JOHN'S POVThe Academy hums with quiet anticipation the next morning. I notice it the moment I step into the dining hall. Conversations pause when I approach, heads turning briefly before looking away. Then the talking resumes in softer tones, more careful than before.I grab food and sit with my team. Lawrence looks up as I settle into my seat."Morning," he says. "Slept at all?""Well enough," I lie.Maya studies my face with that direct way she has. "You look tired.""I'm fine," I say, taking a bite of bread I don't particularly want.Thomas leans in slightly. "It's not just you noticing things today. Something feels off this morning. Like everyone's waiting for something."He's right. The shift in atmosphere is subtle but very noticeable throughout breakfast. People step aside for me without meeting my eyes, creating a path that feels less like respect and more like distance. Like they're already positioning themselves away from whatever is coming."Did something happen

JOHN'S POVThe tea house sits quiet when I arrive, tucked into the eastern corner of the meditation garden just as Elder Ming described. It's a small structure, traditional in design, with paper screens and a low table inside. Steam rises faintly from a kettle already set out, two cups placed precisely across from each other.Elder Ming is already there, kneeling on a cushion with perfect posture. He looks up as I enter and gestures to the cushion opposite him."John. Thank you for coming.""Thank you for the invitation," I say, removing my shoes at the entrance before stepping inside.I settle onto the cushion, feeling awkward in the formal position. Elder Ming seems completely at ease, like he was born to sit this way.He pours tea for both of us with deliberate care. The tea flows from the pot in a smooth line, filling each cup to exactly the same level. He watches my hands as I accept the cup, observing how I hold it, whether I understand the proper etiquette.I hold it with both

Chapter 80JOHN'S POVTraining is interrupted when an instructor redirects me to a different station than the one I am assigned. I'm halfway to my designated workspace when he calls out."John, not that one. Over here."I stop and turn. He's pointing to a station in the far corner, away from where the rest of my team is setting up."I was assigned to station three," I say, checking the board where assignments are posted."Change of plans," the instructor says. His tone is casual but his eyes are firm. "Station seven needs someone. You'll work there today."I glance at station seven. The tools there are modern, unfamiliar in their design. Digital monitors, electronic diagnostic equipment, instruments that require power sources and calibration. None of the traditional tools I normally rely on are present. When I hesitate, the instructor gestures for me to move. "Is there a problem?""No," I say, because what else can I say?I walk to station seven and examine the setup more closely. Eve

JOHN'S POVThe failure of another participant spreads through the Academy before noon. I don't see it happen, but I witness the aftermath in the corridor when the person is escorted past us by two officials. The participant is a young man I recognize from the obstacle course. He'd struggled through it but finished. Now his eyes are fixed on the floor, his shoulders hunched inward like he's trying to disappear. His team stands frozen in place against the wall, watching him pass.No one steps forward. No one speaks. No one offers comfort or solidarity. The space around him empties too quickly, participants backing away like failure is contagious. Like getting too close might infect them with whatever inadequacy caused him to wash out.I stay where I am, not backing away but not approaching either. Just watching as he's led down the corridor toward the administrative building. Toward whatever process removes failed participants from the Academy. When he's out of sight, the corridor stays

JOHN'S POVI wake with a tightness in my chest that does not fade, I try shaking it off as I run through the usual morning routine but even as I move through the dorm corridors toward the trial hall, the feeling still stays, like a rock that isn't ready to move. Something about today feels different. Heavier. The air itself seems to press down, or maybe it's just me in my head. Groups gather in low clusters along the pathway, watching each other more than they speak. Conversations stop when I pass. Eyes follow my movement. I keep walking, not acknowledging the attention that my presence is drawing. I hate it. The trial hall is larger than the conference rooms we've used before. High ceilings, stone walls, rows of chairs arranged theater-style facing a central examination area. Observers are already seated - officials, family representatives, other participants waiting their turns. When I step into the room, one of the evaluators signals for me to approach. She's a woman I don't rec
