Locked

With a racing heart, Jack kept his eyes fixed on Carrie's computer screen, the flickering light casting an eerie glow across his tense features. The file transfer progressed painstakingly slowly, each passing percentage feeling like an eternity as the sound of approaching footsteps echoed through the corridor outside.

“You sure you locked the door last night?” a voice pierced through the air, clear and distinct. Jack's breath caught in his throat as he recognized the voice, his mind racing to come up with a plan.

He strained to hear the response, his senses heightened to the point of overload. The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the faint hum of the computer and the pounding of Jack's own heart.

“Okay, I’ll check your office for you,” the voice finally replied, the words carrying a sense of urgency that sent a shiver down Jack's spine.

As the progress bar on the monitor inched closer to completion, Jack's fingers trembled slightly as he reached for the flash drive.
