"Eric, I-is that Uncle Jim?"

Eric nodded with a smile, making his sister widen her eyes in surprise.

“Sir, should we bury him or throw him into the sea?”

Eric stared at the large suitcase, his jaw tightening. “No,” he finally answered.

Everyone fell silent, waiting for him to continue. Meanwhile, Elise felt a little relieved that Eric had no intention of killing their uncle.

Truthfully, Elise didn’t care about Jim at all; in fact, she agreed that her life would be much better if he were dead. But she didn’t want Eric to become a murderer, especially if it would bring him trouble in the future.

“This bastard can’t die just yet. The pain he’s feeling is still far from enough! Now, take this suitcase downstairs. Get him out of it, but leave him wrapped in the sack.”

“And then, Sir?” Kevin quickly responded, dreading the idea of having to deal with Jim any longer.

“Dump him in front of Harris Heaven. Peyton needs to hear about his drained bank account!”

Kevin and Evelyn exchanged glances before smirking. They knew this was going to be fun. In unison, they answered, “Understood, Sir.”

Eric watched as his two subordinates carried away his despicable uncle. After this, your lives will take a turn! he thought in satisfaction.

“I didn’t expect things to turn out this way. Everything ended well,” Elise said, still staring at the elevator that swallowed Jim.

“No, Elise. This is just the beginning. The beginning of our uncle and aunt’s downfall. As for us, I promise you, we will never suffer again.”

Elise hugged her brother, overwhelmed with emotion. Not long ago, she felt like there was nothing to hope for in life, but Eric had come to save her. “Thank you so much.”

Eric led Elise into room 199. They would resume celebrating her birthday, which had been interrupted by Jim’s screams.

She blew out the candles and cut the cake after making her wish. With teary eyes, she handed the first slice to Eric.

“What did you wish for?” Eric asked while enjoying his piece.

“There are two things, but I won’t tell you.” She chuckled.

“Tell me. I insist.” Eric laughed loudly.

Elise fell silent, her gaze drifting as if lost in thought.

“Elise.”

She smiled. “First, I wish to continue my studies abroad. I don’t know, Eric, but the terrible things that happened… they won’t just disappear from my mind, even if Uncle Jim is out of the picture. I want to breathe the air of another country.”

She looked at Eric. “I know it’s an impossible wish. But if I can’t study, I’d be happy just working abroad.”

“Granted!” Eric declared.

Elise frowned, then laughed again, sure that Eric was just trying to cheer her up.

“You will study abroad, Elise,” Eric said, completely serious.

Elise burst into laughter. “Don’t look at me like that. It’s fine, Eric. It’s just a dream. You don’t have to make it come true.”

She held his hand. “Just getting away from Uncle Jim is already a huge blessing. Thank you for everything.”

Eric squeezed her hand tighter. “But I will make it happen.”

Elise’s eyes widened. She knew Eric meant it.

“I’ll pay for everything. Tonight, you’ll decide which university you want to attend. Tomorrow, you’re leaving.”

Elise tried to process his words, thinking back to everything that had happened. Then, she realized something. “How did you suddenly get so much money?”

Eric swallowed, trying to appear calm. He had explained many things to Elise before, but not about the System that had chosen him as its Host.

“Um… I won the lottery.”

“The lottery?”

“Yes!” Eric grinned awkwardly.

“How much?”

Eric glanced upward, then to the side. “Um, a lot. So much that I struggle to even spell the number.” He patted Elise’s hand. “What matters is, it’s enough for us to live comfortably. Very comfortably.”

Elise couldn’t hold back her happiness. It felt like a dream. She had no idea Eric had even entered a lottery—let alone won!

“I thought the people helping us were just your friends, cosplaying as your subordinates. And that one of them was some rich guy who owned this hotel. So, you hire three people to help you doing all of this using the money you won?”

Eric nodded.

“Thank goodness. I feel better knowing you have professionals protecting you.”

“So, what’s your second wish?”

Elise’s expression softened. She shook her head as if trying to push away a painful thought. “I wished for your recovery.”

Eric’s heart pounded. With everything that had happened, he had momentarily forgotten about his illness. He reassured her, “I regret that I can’t fulfill your second wish right away. But—”

Eric paused as Elise suddenly broke into sobs.

“Hey, don’t worry. Now I have enough money for the surgery,” Eric said cheerfully.

“But still, surgery doesn’t guarantee a cure.”

Elise vividly remembered what the doctor had said. Without immediate surgery, Eric had less than two months to live. But even with the operation, his chances of survival were less than 35%. If he made it five years post-surgery, it would already be considered a miracle.

The thought of losing Eric—of being truly alone—made Elise sad.

“I’ll do my best to recover. Elise, I won’t leave you alone.”

Just as Eric said that, an unbearable pain struck his head.

“Eric, what’s wrong?” Elise grabbed his shoulders, panicking.

This wasn’t the first time. He had suffered sudden, excruciating headaches before. The more intense the pain, the more critical his condition. A month ago, the doctor had urged him to undergo surgery to remove the tumor in his brain.

Elise wept as she watched Eric clutch his head tightly. She couldn’t imagine how much pain he was in—he could barely make a sound.

Her breathing grew erratic as she remembered that Eric had only been taking painkillers to manage his suffering. And even those were limited because they were expensive.

Now, Eric didn’t have any left. It had been nearly a week since his supply ran out. The little money he had saved was instead used to buy Elise a birthday cake—with help from a sympathetic cashier.

“Wait here, I’ll buy you some medicine.” Elise suddenly remembered the money Peyton had given her back at the brothel.

But just as she was about to leave, Eric grabbed her hand and shook his head, still unable to speak.

Eric realized this pain was worse than ever before, as if a boulder was crushing his skull—no, even worse than that. He couldn’t describe it, but one thing became clear: he wasn’t sure if he would survive this time.

And if these were his last moments, he wanted Elise by his side.

“Eric!!” Elise screamed as he lost consciousness, collapsing onto the bed.

Elise’s face was stricken with panic. She quickly checked his pulse and breathing. Relief flooded her when she found he was still alive.

“I’ll find help,” she muttered before rushing out of the room.

As she ran, Elise whispered a silent prayer—perhaps the first truly earnest one she had ever made.

“Wherever You are, God, please save my brother. Take anything from me in return—any punishment You choose. I’m ready. Just let him live.”

The final test was rowing. But that one would be held tomorrow.Eric had just finished showering when he realized something odd — the locker room was unusually quiet. Before he went in to wash up, the place had been full of participants.“Maybe they all went home or are talking with the coaches outside,” he muttered, toweling off his body.He opened his locker to grab a T-shirt. After putting it on, he collected the rest of his belongings. He planned to go straight home — to his old house — and finally get some rest. It had been a long time. But just as Eric turned around, he froze.Chloe was suddenly there. She had appeared out of nowhere like a ghost, making him flinch instinctively.“Sorry—sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.” Chloe reached out, wanting to touch his arm to calm him down, but Eric’s body shifted back instantly, rejecting her approach.“What do you want?”That tone. Sharp and cold enough to pierce through her chest. Chloe came here with good intentions, yet Eric trea

During the final physical test — the pull-up challenge — Eric shone brighter than ever. While others struggled to complete thirty reps, pausing every few seconds to catch their breath, Eric powered through the entire set without stopping once. His movements were steady, effortless, and precise, as if his body had been built for this.By the end of it, he had secured first place overall across all physical tests — far ahead of the second and third ranks. The seniors, committee members, and fellow participants all approached him with congratulations and admiration. Everyone except Daniel, who stood off to the side, holding back tears. Deep down, Daniel knew his chance of passing was gone.Eric greeted each congratulatory handshake with calm warmth and a polite smile. But the moment Richard Brown stepped forward, that smile vanished. His eyes sharpened instantly, cold and cutting.“Hey, what’s your problem?” Richard frowned. “Did I do something to you? Say something wrong?”He was clearl

After all participants finished the running test, the committee announced a fifteen-minute break before moving on to the next stage: a 500-meter swimming test. The swimming test was held at the man-made river inside the campus, not far from the rowing club’s basecamp—a twenty-meter-wide canal stretching a hundred meters long, its water clear and calm. This was where the rowing club members usually trained every afternoon. Along the canal’s edge stood rows of leafy trees and a modest grandstand for spectators.“Alright, listen up!” the head coach shouted from a small podium. “You’ll swim five full laps—total distance, five hundred meters! You can use any stroke you like, as long as it doesn’t endanger other participants. Your completion time will determine your score!”This time, many of the participants looked more confident. For a rower, swimming wasn’t just a skill—it was survival. They trained on water, not asphalt, and five hundred meters was nothing to fear. Those who hadn’t perf

The first physical test had just ended, but the air around the field was far from calm. Heavy breaths filled the space; some participants gulped down mineral water as if their lives depended on it. But the coach wasn’t planning to give them much rest.“Next test, five laps around the field! One lap is four hundred meters—so that’s a total of two kilometers. You’ll be divided into five sessions, ten people each!”The announcement drew a mix of cheers and nervous faces. Two kilometers wasn’t a short distance—especially after thirty push-ups.The coach called the first group. “Session one, get ready at the starting line!”The whistle blew. The runners shot forward, some burning too much energy right at the start. The field was surrounded by a three-meter-wide track, its white lane lines cutting sharply through the green turf. At the edge, staff members clutched stopwatches, their eyes fixed on the digital board showing live lap times.Three laps went by fast. Among them, a tall student w

The training field at the university’s rowing club basecamp stretched wide and flawlessly maintained. Its surface wasn’t just ordinary dirt—it was covered with a soft synthetic layer designed to minimize injuries, allowing athletes to push their limits without fear. All of it, of course, was made possible by the Turner family’s generous funding, which had transformed this place into one of the most advanced athletic facilities on campus. On the eastern side, rows of sleek rowing boats rested neatly atop a wooden dock, their polished hulls gleaming under the late-afternoon sunlight. The faint scent of river water mixed with the moist breeze, creating a refreshing yet adrenaline-pumping atmosphere. To the west stood a large, glass-walled building—the main basecamp structure and the heart of the club’s operations. Inside, coaches and committee members discussed details while holding tablets and stopwatches, closely monitoring the list of participants displayed on a massive digital screen

In the midst of tense silence, Daniel—who had already gotten back on his feet—walked over to Chloe to make his complaint.“Eric’s gone mad,” he said dramatically. “He’s jealous because I passed the administrative screening and he didn’t. He ambushed me on my way to the next test just to mess me up. He kicked me—hard—trying to injure me so I wouldn’t perform well in the physical exam. He’s completely lost his mind.”Eric’s lips curled slightly at one corner as he listened to Daniel’s ridiculous lie. He didn’t bother denying it.Meanwhile, Chloe turned toward Daniel, her sharp gaze stabbing right through him. Her jaw tightened; she was visibly angry.Daniel, noticing her expression darken, immediately shifted into his next act—pretending to look nervous and intimidated.“Miss Turner, I’m not lying,” Daniel said, voice trembling just enough to sound pitiful. “That’s exactly what happened. Eric isn’t as decent as you think he is. He’s eaten up by jealousy. Every time he sees someone doing
