Elko, Nevada is not what people think Nevada is. It's dust, mountains that look blue at noon and purple at 6 PM, a wind that never stops, and a kind of quiet that makes your ears ring. Air smells like hot rocks and diesel and sage if it rains, which it almost never does. The sun is white, not yellow. At 102 degrees, your boots stick to asphalt.

This wasn't my first time. My first was when my father died. Now I'm back with a crew, $600M in the bank, and with Vivian and Chase, who had never been here and never wanted to be here.

Vivian used to wear to Greenwich Country Club to complain about taxes, now wearing it in a double-wide trailer where the AC barely works and blows hot air half the time. She now owns her condo in Old Greenwich free and clear because I made Margaret forgive the mortgage.

Chase, sunburn from Miami gone, company gone, trucks gone, excavator gone, sold for $100k to Juniper Ridge Holdings LLC to a lawyer in suite 204 with no name on door. Banned 2 years in Greenwich, Stamford, Darien for pool house that fell down and for interior sheetrock outside that was on my 10-slide carousel that got 22M views. Uber deactivated after rider recognized him as "pool house guy." Now laborer, $22 an hour, shovel, hard hat that says TRAINEE in black marker. In a desert where there is no Country Club, just an orange flag that says HAWTHORNE HOLDINGS LLC - DO NOT ENTER.

Juniper Ridge Battery yard: double-wide trailer office, two new trucks with AC that works, a tent with a press that makes 30 kWh batteries from our dirt, pressed here now, humming low, and a stack of white oak from Oregon under a tarp, $12k shipping per load, Margaret pays from $600M.

Margaret Chen, navy blazer in 102 degrees, no sweat, because she came from Tesla where she ran battery supply and left because she was tired of cars that need lithium but don't build houses: "Jack, welcome back to your dirt. We have extraction permit next week, but workers in Elko motel with bedbugs, $200 a night, 40 workers, 40 families, they need houses now. Then 50 teachers. $280k each, off-grid, battery from our dirt, white oak stage for kids who like to read, like you did in Bronx for Leo."

We start. First house in Nevada, Hawthorne House 5 overall if you count Ridgewood and Bronx, 1 in this desert, for Carlos Mendez, battery worker from Juniper Ridge, wife Elena, kids 6 and 9, living in Motel 6 Elko with bedbugs, kid bitten 20 times, needs a house.

Mike, Luis, Jamal, Tommy Jr., Sloane, me; we frame at 102 degrees, white oak, 16 on the center. Exterior sheetrock, Real Zip tape, real rain screen, real waterproofing, because we don't build houses that fall down. Battery in basement, 30 kWh, first brick pressed in Elko from our dirt, humming.

Vivian in office, double-wide, desk, QuickBooks open, fan blowing hot, phone rings; lumber yard Oregon. First invoice, white oak load, $12,000. She enters $1,200. Decimal wrong.

Margaret walks over, looks at screen, doesn't yell like Vivian used to yell at me when I ate in kitchen: "Vivian, decimal, $12k not $1.2k, fix it. This is $12k of real wood for real house, not $40 fake stamp you bought online."

Vivian fixes, hands shaking, cries.

Outside, Chase with shovel. Mike: "Chase, trench for battery should be 3 feet deep, 100 feet long, straight, 16 on center line. you dig, you don't use excavator today, you use shovel, so you learn what rock feels like."

Chase digs, hits caliche at 1 foot, rock hard, blister in 20 minutes, sits on edge of trench, hard hat TRAINEE tilted.

Luis: "Chase, hold the shovel like a shovel not like tennis racket. Like this." Shows him. Chase tries again.

Day in Elko, sun doesn't set until 8:30 PM, so we work until 8 PM, lights from our battery already humming even before house done, because we test the battery at 5 PM.

Walls up, roof up, battery humming, lights on at 6:15 PM, no NV Energy, just our dirt. No gas, no Con Ed, just lithium from 4,000 acres that Dad bought for $8,000 cash drunk in a bar.

Carlos family walks in, motel bags in hands, kid with bedbug bites, wife Elena cries, hand over mouth, because last week motel smelled like chemicals and this house smells like white oak, and air purifier humming from battery, medical grade, because Carlos said kid has asthma, like Leo in Bronx.

Kid runs to small white oak stage in bedroom, 3 feet by 4 feet, low, built from scrap by Tommy Jr., because Sloane told us "kids who like to read need stage," and sits and reads Dog Man, same book Leo read in Bronx.

Vivian watches from the office and smiles.

Second house, for a teacher in Elko Elementary, Ms. Johnson, single mom, motel to house, same story as Bronx, same story as Queens, same story everywhere because everywhere there are teachers whose kids can't breathe and workers sleeping with bedbugs.

Chase helps Mike frame kid's stage, small, 3x4, white oak scrap, and Mike says, "Chase, you are learning, this stage is straight, yesterday your trench was straight after you hit rock, tomorrow you can run big saw, but you don't hit your thumb like Sloane did first time, you measure twice."

Chase: "Mike, I never built stage before, I built pool house that fell down, I used interior sheetrock."

Mike: "We all saw the video, 2M views, pool house falling, now build the stage that doesn't fall down, for the kid who likes to read, and maybe the kid won't remember your pool house fell down, he will remember the stage didn't fall down."

By 10 houses up in desert, 10 houses with lights on, no NV Energy, just our dirt humming low, 10 families out of motel bedbugs, kids on white oak stages reading, air purifiers humming, batteries humming, white oak smell, not chemicals.

Vivian in office finally balances QuickBooks, orders 20 more white oak loads correctly, $240k, enters right, and for first time in 12 years she orders something that isn't for a house that falls down.

Chase in yard, blister healed, hard hat TRAINEE, trench for House 11, straight, 16 on center, exterior sheetrock and Zip tape.

And me, on roof of House 10, looking at 4,000 acres I first saw when dad died. Dust that is $2.1T but also just dust where Dad said "maybe you will build something here when I'm gone that isn't stupid".

Brown flies in with DOE loan approval, $200M, because title clear now, Tesla and Ford calling Margaret because she owns 15% and can sell.

We have cash to build 100 houses now. House 11 for battery worker going up tomorrow, then 12, then 13, 100 houses in 100 days, 50 for workers, 50 for teachers, $280k each, off-grid, white oak stage.

  • New Money, No Need

Tuesday 7:30 AM, we were already on our way to Greenwich to visit Vivian and Chase and ask what really made them to forget us. My crew were already advising that I file to revoke the house and Company, but I had a better plan.Me, Mike, Luis, Jamal, Tommy Jr., Sloane, with dusty boots from Elko roofs, jeans, $22 t-shirts, hard hats in the truck bed, HAWTHORNE in Sharpie. We wanted to ask one question: why housewarming without inviting Jack?We parked on Round Hill Road by 8:45 AM on tuesday. The Big house lights were on. Two new F-150s $72k each in the driveway. White sheet still over the pool house hole. Catering trash bag still by the garage, Hendrick's.I had told Brown "Brown, don't file yet, maybe they were just excited, maybe they forgot to invite, maybe nice works." Brown said "Jack, page 4 clause, thirty-day clawback, I wrote it for this exact party." I said "Don't file yet."So no revocation yet. No Sheriff, no email. Just house and company given away on Monday, housewarming

At 6PM my phone buzzed on a roof in Elko.I was on the roof of House 13. Tar paper hot enough to burn through my boots. Below me, twelve houses with lights on, gray bricks in basements humming from dirt. White oak stages inside, kids reading, air purifiers humming. Mike's crew was cleaning up, Luis coiling extension cords, Jamal sweeping white oak dust into a pile to save because white oak is $12k a load and we don't waste $12k.Sloane texted: "Don't look at Instagram."When Sloane says don't look at Instagram, you have to look at Instagram.Vivian Hawthorne is live. • Two Signatures

The double-wide in Elko has no AC at 8 AM. It died at 2 AM. Inside it's 104 degrees and the box fan just moves hot air around. The whiteboard says 12 HOUSES - LIGHTS ON, 88 TO GO and someone wrote underneath in black marker: DON'T SELL TO TESLA YET.At 1:20 AM last night I wired $900M to buy everything. At 1:21 AM I owned 100% of Dad's $8,000 dirt again, plus the big house on Round Hill Road where I ate in the kitchen for 15 years, plus Hawthorne Custom Homes LLC that built a pool house with interior sheetrock outside and got 2M views when it fell down, plus two trucks that failed inspection. At 1:22 AM I knew I didn't want any of it except the dirt and the press. At 8 AM I put two real deeds on the folding table in the dead-AC trailer. Real Greenwich Town Hall stamps, Tuesday stamps, when town hall is open.Mike, Luis, Jamal, Tommy Jr., Sloane, Margaret; all standing around table, all sweating.Margaret: "Jack, don't. Bad business. You just paid $900M for leverage. You sell the big h

  • The Buyback

We have 10 houses up now with lights on, and batteries trucked from Reno at $4k diesel each. We had already pressed first lithium brick in Elko from our own 4,000 acres and put it in House 11 for Ms. Carter. That video is what changes everything. Sloane sent it to DOE, Margaret sent it to Tesla and Ford.At 8 PM that night, after House 11 lights on, Margaret gets a call on speaker in trailer office, we all hear, Vivian, Chase, Mike, Luis, Jamal, Tommy Jr., me: Tesla: "Margaret, we saw on-site press video, DOE forwarded, you pressed in Elko and powered house same day, closed loop, no Reno trucking. We want 100 tons next month, $50M cash."Ford: 10 minutes later, same speaker: "We saw video, we want 100 tons too, $50M, can you do it?"$100M cash waiting for 200 tons of dirt, which is 200 holes 4x4x4 on 4,000 acres, nothing.Margaret looks at me: "Jack, $100M is $100M, you have $600M cash from selling your 15%, plus $200M DOE loan Brown got after I cleared lien in Greenwich Country Club
