At 6PM my phone buzzed on a roof in Elko.

I was on the roof of House 13. Tar paper hot enough to burn through my boots. Below me, twelve houses with lights on, gray bricks in basements humming from dirt. White oak stages inside, kids reading, air purifiers humming. Mike's crew was cleaning up, Luis coiling extension cords, Jamal sweeping white oak dust into a pile to save because white oak is $12k a load and we don't waste $12k.

Sloane texted: "Don't look at I*******m."

He pans to pool house covered with white sheet. Under white sheet, you can see corner of interior sheetrock, green, outside. Same mistake that made it fall down. They didn't fix it, they covered it with sheet and string lights.

Comments flying: "Yesss queen!" "Welcome home Vivian!" "Elko who?" "Real builders back!"

Mike climbed up the ladder onto roof next to me, sweating, saw live over my shoulder. He didn't say anything for 20 seconds, just watched Vivian toast.

Mike: "Jack, I told you don't do it in the trailer. I said don't."

Luis climbed up second ladder, saw: "Boss, they didn't invite us. You sold 15% of your dirt but they didn't invite you. They didn't even thank you."

Jamal climbed up, dust mask around neck: "Boss, that green internal sheetrock outside, same as the pool house that fell down. They are building again the same way."

Sloane climbed up from below, phone in hand, face red. "Jack, they blocked me from live after I commented 'That pool house still has interior sheetrock outside under sheet.' Blocked. Your sister blocked."

Margaret climbed up last, blazer off, t-shirt battery, she had the AC fixed in the trailer finally, came to tell me the AC was fixed, but saw the live instead.

Margaret: "Jack, bad business I told you. You paid nine hundred million for leverage, you gave away three point two million just to be nice. Nice is how you got robbed the first time. Now they are doing a housewarming with Hendrick's catering one hundred forty-five dollars a head, forty people, five thousand eight hundred dollars, from what money? Your money. The Condo money you gave them."

On live, Vivian now in the kitchen, now catering staff plating salmon: "This is where we always ate as family, Jack loved this kitchen, so cozy, so... humble."

Chase in the living room: "Company back, we are hiring, DMs open, no more twenty-two an hour laborer, real builder pay."

I didn't close it. I watched because Dad's workshop foundation was under that white sheet with string lights. They tore down the workshop, I rebuilt footprint with Mike, now they put catering table on the footprint.

Vivian raises glass: "To second chances! To family! To Hawthorne Custom Homes!" Everyone raises glass.

At 6:15 PM Elko time, batteries hummed in twelve basements. Same time as House 11 first brick yesterday. Same time Ms. Carter's son in House 11 read Dog Man on the white oak stage.

At 6:15 PM Greenwich time, they cut cake. Cake says HAWTHORNE IS BACK in navy icing.

Mike: "Jack, you thought being nice would make you un-clouded. Then you gave away house and company to be nice. Now you clouded again."

Luis: "Boss, what we do tomorrow?"

I closed live at 6:18 PM, forty-seven hundred viewers, they ended live to eat salmon.

Below, twelve houses lights on, kids on stages reading, stages that don't fall, because Mike said sixteen inches on center, exterior sheetrock only, real zip tape.

Above, forty-seven hundred people watched housewarming of the house I bought and gave away, and they didn't invite the crew who hired them to build twelve houses that don't fall down when they were broke.

I said: "Tomorrow, we visit to understand why they did that. Attorney Brown will go with us inca.se they do anything out of line."

Brown on speaker from Stamford, sweatpants, heard everything because Sloane called him: "Jack, clause is there, page four, operating agreement and deed, thirty days, I wrote it for this exact party, I knew they'd throw a party."

Margaret: "AC fixed in the trailer, by the way."

We sat on the roof of House 13, 104 degrees even at 6 PM, box fan now in trailer below actually working, twelve houses lights on, one big house in Greenwich lights on with catering and string lights over fallen pool house covered with white sheet, #HawthorneIsBack.

Two signatures at 8 AM, one housewarming at 6 PM, zero invites to Elko, forty-seven hundred viewers, one white sheet covering same mistake that made the pool house fall down.
