For a full ten seconds, silence filled the room—nothing but the steady rhythm of their breathing. Jaden stood firm, arms crossed, his expression unreadable. Morganna met his gaze, chin lifted, eyes flashing with defiance. Neither blinked.

It was a silent war of willpower, and neither seemed willing to lose.

Finally, Jaden sighed. The corner of his mouth twitched in reluctant amusement. “Fine. You asked for it. Don’t come crying to me when you regret it.”

Morganna’s pulse quickened. The way he said it—calm, almost warning—made her chest tighten a little. But her pride wouldn’t let her back down. With a faint smirk, she folded her arms and said, “I’m not afraid. It’s not like you’re some bad guy.”

Jaden gave her a long look, the kind that said you have no idea what you’re talking about. He almost laughed.

Minutes later, the two left Winter Hall. Jaden climbed into the driver’s seat of his old Volkswagen Polo while Morganna slipped into the passenger side, adjusting her hair like she was

Jaden’s eyes were like shards of ice. His calm voice cut through the tense air.“That elderly man you beat up earlier…” he said, each word measured, deliberate. “That was my father-in-law.”The words hit Bigi and his men like a punch to the gut. For a second, no one moved. Then murmurs rippled through the crowd.“What?”“His father-in-law?”“Wait, that old man they attacked near the Roden?”Bigi’s jaw tightened. His face darkened as he exchanged glances with his crew. A mixture of disbelief and unease flickered in his eyes before anger quickly took over.“So that’s what this is,” he growled, his lips curling into a sneer. “You came looking for trouble.”He spat on the ground and roared, “Hounds, get him! We’ll avenge Terrier!”The men roared in unison, fueled by rage and embarrassment.Wolfhound was the first to move, charging with a dagger gripped tight. “I’ll gut you open!” he bellowed as he lunged straight for Jaden’s torso. The crowd gasped and stumbled back in panic. Bigi gave a sharp nod, signaling his men to help Terrier up so they could leave. Two of them stepped forward, each grabbing one of Terrier’s arms, but the moment they tried to lift him, Terrier screamed in agony. Sweat poured down his pale face as he twisted in pain.“Stop! Don’t move me!” he cried out, voice trembling. “My leg… my leg’s broken!”Bigi frowned and crouched slightly beside him. “Terrier, that’s enough,” he hissed under his breath. “They already paid. Cut the act before you ruin it.”But Terrier’s face told a different story — the kind of pain no acting could fake. His teeth chattered uncontrollably, and his lips quivered as he stammered, “I’m not… I’m not acting! My leg’s really broken!”Bigi’s expression shifted instantly. “What?”Terrier clenched his fists, his eyes burning with rage and humiliation as he pointed weakly at Jaden. “It was him! That bastard kicked me earlier, and now… now my leg’s busted!”“What?” The word burst from Bigi and his men almost in unison.O

Morganna’s face turned as white as a sheet. The crowd that had been ready to speak up for Jaden went dead silent once they saw how aggressive and unreasonable Bigi and his gang were.Bigi’s men loomed like vultures, blocking the street and glaring at anyone who so much as opened their mouth. The tension in the air was thick enough to choke on.Jaden’s lips curved into a faint smirk. His voice was calm, almost bored. “So, how do you suggest we settle this?”Bigi cracked his neck and pointed at Terrier, who was still rolling on the ground clutching his leg and howling in pain. “You ran over my friend and broke his leg. But I’m a fair man.” He raised two fingers. “Two thousand will do.”He grinned, showing a row of yellowed teeth. “Pay us the two thousand, and I’ll walk away. But if you dare pay less…” His grin vanished. “We’ll go with the old rule — an eye for an eye. You break my man’s leg, we break yours.”Gasps and murmurs rippled through the crowd.“Two thousand?” someone whispered.

Jaden and Morganna stared at each other for a beat, then at the circle of men. It smelled like a setup. Scammers, or worse. Before they could even open their doors, the group closed in with quick, confident steps. Faces tight, eyes hard. No hesitance. No fear.A huge man with dark skin and a square jaw slammed his fist against the passenger window so hard the glass jumped. “Get off the car! What the hell kind of driving is that? You hit my buddy!” he barked.Jaden and Morganna climbed out slowly. Jaden counted seven men, including the one who had been sprawled on the asphalt. Recognition hit him cold. These were the same men who had beaten Vane. These were The Hounds. The white-haired man on the ground was Terrier. The man who’d smashed the window introduced himself by the way he moved: Bigi. The Devs had walked into their trap and into Jaden’s headlights.Jaden kept his hands visible, palms open, voice level. “You say I hit your buddy. Where is he hurt?”Terrier began to blubber, voi

Done checking the older man’s injuries, Jaden finally lifted his head and said grimly, “His nose is probably broken, and he’s got bruises all over. We need to get him to the hospital immediately.”Vane’s jaw tightened, rage flooding his face. He grabbed Jaden’s arm with trembling fingers, his voice rough with humiliation. “Jaden, being beaten like this in front of my own home—it’s unacceptable! Find those bastards who did this to me and make them pay!”Jaden’s eyes flickered with calm restraint. Before he could speak, Selena stepped forward, her tone edged with reason. “Dad, Ironvale City’s massive. How could Jaden possibly track down a few random thugs in a city this big?”Nora let out a tired sigh and nodded. “She’s right. We can file a police report, but they won’t care about a street assault like this. They’ll probably shelve it by morning.”Vane’s shoulders slumped, the helplessness in his eyes turning to bitterness. “So that’s it? I’m just supposed to accept this humiliation and

Pointing toward his father-in-law, Jaden suggested calmly, “How about Dad? He studied business management and was the general manager at Helix group for years. He’s got the credentials and the experience. I’m sure he’ll be able to handle it.”Vane’s heart leaped in his chest at those words. You know me that well, kid? How did you figure I still had that fire in me?A flicker of pride and excitement flashed across his eyes, though he quickly masked it with a modest chuckle. When he turned to his daughter, his tone wavered between hesitation and hope. “I’m not that old yet, so I wouldn’t mind having something to do,” he admitted. “But a factory manager? That’s no small role. I’m not sure I’ll be able to handle that kind of pressure anymore.”Nora stepped in, her tone warm and encouraging. “Why don’t you let your father give it a try? He’s always been good at managing people.”A small laugh escaped Selena’s lips. “As his daughter, of course I believe Dad can do it,” she said proudly. “It
