The grand ballroom of the Grand Hyatt was blindingly bright. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling and casting sharp light on the city’s most powerful people. Tonight was the 70th birthday of Edward Sterling, the patriarch of the Sterling family. Men in tailored suits and women in diamonds filled the room, laughing and sipping expensive wine.

In the corner of this magnificent room stood Adrian Veyron.

He did not fit in. While everyone else wore clothes that cost more than a car, Adrian wore a cheap black suit from a local mall. His tall and athletic frame made the suit look decent, but it could not hide the cheap fabric. His gray eyes were calm, watching the crowd without any envy. On his left wrist, he wore a scratched, old mechanical watch. It was his father’s watch—the only thing he had left of his family's past.

"Look at him," a sharp voice whispered nearby. "The stray dog of the Sterling family."

"I still don’t understand why Edward let his daughter marry a former delivery guy," another voice replied with a chuckle. "He is just an embarrassment."

Adrian heard them clearly, but his face did not change. He was used to it. For three years, he had been married to Elena Sterling. For three years, he had been the family's punching bag.

"Adrian, go get more red wine from the cellar," Vivian Sterling, his mother-in-law, suddenly commanded. She stepped into his line of sight, her face covered in thick makeup and her eyes full of disgust. "The guests are waiting. Don't just stand there like a statue. You are ruining the view."

"Yes, Mother," Adrian said quietly.

He turned and walked toward the kitchen. As he passed the main table, he saw Elena. She looked breathtakingly beautiful in her dark blue evening gown. Her long black hair fell perfectly over her shoulders. But her face was as cold as ice. She was talking to a business partner, completely ignoring Adrian’s existence.

"She doesn't even want to look at me," Adrian thought, a faint bitter smile touching his lips. "Well, I can't blame her. She was forced into this marriage by her grandfather's old promise before he passed away. To her, I am just a mistake."

Adrian walked down the long corridor to the VIP wine cellar. He picked up three bottles of vintage Bordeaux, each costing thousands of dollars. As he carried them back toward the ballroom, he ran into Raymond Sterling, Elena’s older brother and the current CEO of the Sterling Group.

Raymond was already drunk. His tie was loose, and his face was red. He was holding an empty glass, walking unsteadily. Behind him was Chloe, his younger sister, who was holding her phone, live-streaming the party to her thousands of followers.

"Oh, look who it is! The family servant!" Raymond laughed loudly, blocking Adrian’s path.

"Raymond, let me pass. The guests are waiting for the wine," Adrian said calmly.

"Don't use that tone with me, loser," Raymond snapped, his eyes flashing with sudden anger. "You think because you married my sister, you are equal to us? You are nothing! Your father was a failure who died of stress, and your mother is a dying burden in a hospital bed!"

Adrian’s grip on the wine bottles tightened. His knuckles turned white. He could tolerate insults directed at himself, but hearing his parents mocked made a cold fire burn in his chest.

"Move, Raymond," Adrian said, his voice dropping a few octaves, becoming dangerously deep.

Raymond flinched slightly at the sudden change in Adrian's eyes, but his pride took over. "What did you say? You dare order me around?"

Suddenly, Raymond stepped forward and grabbed Adrian’s shoulder, intending to push him. But because he was drunk, Raymond tripped over his own shiny leather shoes. He staggered backward, his arms flailing wildly. In his panic, he struck the tray Adrian was holding.

The three expensive bottles of wine flew through the air and crashed heavily onto the marble floor.

Smash!

The deep red liquid exploded everywhere, splashing across the floor, onto Adrian’s cheap trousers, and directly onto Raymond’s white silk shirt and expensive Italian shoes.

"Ah! My shirt!" Raymond screamed.

Chloe gasped loudly, her phone screen shaking. "Oh my god! Adrian just attacked Raymond!"

The loud crash silenced the nearby ballroom. Dozens of heads turned toward the corridor. Edward Sterling, the patriarch, walked out with a dark, furious expression on his face.

"What is going on here?" Edward’s voice boomed with absolute authority.

Raymond immediately fell to the floor, pretending to be in pain, pointing a shaking finger at Adrian. "Father! Adrian did it! I just asked him to be careful with the wine, but he got angry and threw the bottles at me! Look at my clothes! He did this on purpose to ruin your birthday!"

Vivian rushed forward, gasping in horror. "Oh my god, Raymond! Are you hurt? Edward, look at this! This animal is trying to destroy our family's reputation in front of all our guests!"

Adrian stood amidst the broken glass and red stains. He looked at Raymond, then at the gathering crowd. He knew no one would believe him.

"Grandfather, I didn't push him. Raymond tripped," Adrian said, his voice steady, looking directly into Edward’s cold eyes.

"Shut up!" Edward roared. The old man’s face was twisted in rage. "A man without money has no right to speak in this house. You are nothing but trouble, Adrian!"

Later that afternoon, as new transport manifests were distributed to the drivers, a modest silver sedan pulled up outside the main gate of Northwind Logistics.Elena Sterling stepped out of the car. She wore a simple charcoal blouse and trousers, her long black hair tied neatly behind her. Her face looked tired, but her eyes were filled with quiet determination as she carried a leather folder containing her company's legal documents. After seeing Northwind’s heavy trucks haul her silk cargo to the harbor yesterday, Elena had been unable to sleep. She needed to know who was behind Northwind's sudden transformation and why this rising giant had chosen to help her small, struggling firm.As she walked into the clean main lobby of the office building, Director Thomas met her with a mug of black coffee."Miss Elena Sterling?" Thomas asked politely, stepping forward. "What brings the daughter of the Sterling family to our quiet harbor?"Elena bowed her head slightly with genuine respect, con

By nine o'clock the next morning, the sun shone brightly over Pier 14. The lingering storm clouds had passed, revealing a clean, blue sky.Inside the large conference room on the ground floor of Northwind Logistics, twenty men sat around a long wooden table. They were the senior truck drivers, warehouse supervisors, and maintenance chiefs of Sector 109—men whose hands were calloused from decades of hard work.At the head of the table sat Adrian Veyron. He wore a clean dark suit, and on his right index finger, the dark iron Sovereign Ring gleamed softly under the lights. Beside him stood Lawyer Winston, holding his mahogany cane, while Director Thomas sat to his right with a stack of financial documents. The room was completely quiet. The veteran workers looked at Adrian with a mixture of curiosity and deep respect, having heard how he brought the arrogant Sterling family to their knees."Gentlemen," Adrian began, his voice quiet, clear, and commanding immediate attention. "For three ye

The rain over Pier 14 grew heavier as midnight approached, turning the ground near the main iron gate into a sea of cold mud.Outside the fence, Raymond Sterling stood under a small umbrella bought from a nearby gas station. His expensive leather shoes were completely ruined, soaked through with muddy water. His loose jaw bandage hung near his chin, and his arms trembled as he gripped a heavy black briefcase containing two hundred thousand dollars in cash. For three long hours, Raymond stood outside the gate in the cold rain. Every time he tried to shout at the booth, the two dock workers inside simply turned up their radio, ignoring him."Open the gate!" Raymond screamed, his voice hoarse from the wind. "I am Raymond Sterling, CEO of the Sterling Group! I have your money!"Finally, the heavy iron gate clicked open with a loud metallic groan.Director Thomas stepped out, wearing a thick raincoat over his faded blue uniform. He carried an old flashlight, casting a bright beam across Ra

While Northwind’s heavy trucks hauled Elena's cargo through the western district, a different scene unfolded at the central city plaza. The construction site of the Sterling Group’s flagship project lay silent.Dozens of towering cranes stood frozen against the sky. Heavy concrete mixers sat parked along the perimeter, the wet cement inside slowly hardening into rock. Over fifty hired workers sat on crates near the gate, arguing loudly with the site foreman.Inside the temporary site office, the air was hot and suffocating.Raymond Sterling slammed both fists onto the plastic table, knocking over architectural plans. His face was red, his eyes bloodshot, and his jaw bandage was soaked with sweat."What do you mean they refuse to pour the foundation?!" Raymond roared at his chief site engineer. "I paid your crew three days ago!""You paid our base wages, CEO Raymond!" the engineer shouted back, wiping grease from his forehead. "You didn't pay the material transport fees! The cement fact

  • 14. The Quiet Current

The afternoon sun hung low over the western mill district, casting long shadows across the old brick walls. Unlike the busy financial center with its tall towers, this area relied on real, hard work. Rows of heavy looms hummed inside the factories, turning raw cotton into finished cloth.A modest building near the edge of the district bore a wooden sign reading Veyron & Sterling Garments.Inside the small office, Elena stood before a wooden packing table with her sleeves rolled up. Her hair was tied back in a loose knot, and her face looked pale with fatigue. For three days, she had worked fourteen-hour shifts to run her independent clothing line after leaving her brother’s chaotic office.Beside her, Chloe sat on a metal stool, staring miserably at a stack of unpaid bills. Dark circles showed under her eyes where heavy makeup used to be."Elena," Chloe muttered, her voice whining softly. "The fabric supplier just called again. If our trucks don't collect the silk by five o'clock toda

The morning sun broke through the sea clouds over Pier 14, casting a cold light across Northwind Logistics. The previous night's storm had cleared, leaving behind the fresh scent of saltwater and damp concrete.Inside the harbor office, the quiet atmosphere of the past three years vanished completely. The front desk phones rang endlessly. Local drivers and port contractors called to verify the morning news, as regional manager Haryo Prasetyo had just been arrested for corporate bribery.Upstairs in the director’s office, Adrian stood near the window with his hand resting in his pocket. He gently brushed his thumb against his father’s old watch. Outside, four heavy Northwind trucks rolled smoothly out of the main gate with steady engines.Behind him, Director Thomas hung up the landline with trembling hands. "The port authority officially released the hold on our remaining trucks," Thomas reported, holding a stack of delivery manifests. "Ironclad's local accounts are frozen, and their r
