Creak!
The cranking sound of a wheelchair resounded in a pathway as a young man in his late twenties wheeled himself toward his wife's room to meet her. As his hand reached for the doorknob and was about to pull it, he heard a furious roar. “Let me guess, you are leaving again, aren't you? Is that what you have come to tell me? Huh? August reed! Tell me! Is that what you came to tell me?” Caroline, his wife who was drowned in her never-ending thoughts, upon noticing it was him, bellowed with red eyes. “Yes, I have to go, Caroline. But I promise I won't take long,” August replied as he went ahead to push the door open and wheeled in. Hearing this, Caroline was more furious. The frown on her face deepened, and she looked around looking for something she could use to vent her anger on him. Just then, she caught a glimpse of a glass cup beside her and without thinking twice, she grabbed it and hurled it at him. Ever since she married August, her life had never been the same. She was molested, disdained, and even looked down upon by her peers. Even her family didn't take her seriously anymore and thus the business she was handling was facing a serious backlash. The Winston family had always valued men to be controlling family business and thus, had been biased upon the females. Caroline has been the most hardworking among all, but to suppress her and abolish her rise to power, she was manipulated by Ms Winston, her grandmother to get married to August and become just a regular housewife instead of competing with her brother. Now she was tied to this man, all he had to do was make things worse for her. Though she wasn't angry at him for her grandmother's unfairness, she just couldn't ignore the part where tens of thousands of dollars had been missing from her account on every day he was absent for over three years now. It was just too much for her to take in. Bang! The teacup smashed August’s leg while its contents spilled on his leg. A burning sensation coursed through his leg and he winced a little. His eyes looked unto his legs and his memories drifted to the past. Three years ago, while he was still in the military, he went to war and fought some decisive battles but eventually, he was ambushed by some rigorous enemies who were out to take his life. Though he came out victorious, it cost him a lot and that was why both his legs were disabled. Ever since, he had been having it worse. Everything that he owned before was lost- his unimaginable strength, his identity, and even himself. It felt like his life now revolved around the wheelchair he was in, and he felt useless and hopeless not until the day Caroline married him. He felt hope surge inside him and ever since, he had loved to the moon, but it seemed his feeling wasn't reciprocated. Perhaps his disabled legs made him have a lesser value to her. On the other hand, Caroline shivered a little after seeing what she had done. Her anger took hold of her, and she did what she wasn't supposed to. The guilt in her chest became a giant boulder weighing her down, but after she thought about what he had cost her just for marrying him, anger surged inside her again. At once, she stood up from the bed and stomped her way towards him. “Tell me, where have you been going to for three years now? “Every single day in each month, tell me where, and how you make use of my hard-earned money. Because of you, my life has been messed up. “My brother mocked me and called me a weak woman. Tell me, where and what do you use the money for?” Caroline was beet red as emotions were going haywire inside her. Staring at her, August nibbled his lips tightly. It wasn't like he couldn't tell her, but it was supposed to be a secret in the meantime. When the time was right, he was going to explain everything in detail to her. “Caroline, please, don't be sad. I promise I'll tell you when the time is right.” He said with a pleading gaze, but this made her fumed in anger. To her, she felt he was lying, and even with how she was bawling her eyes out, crying, it didn't appear like he had any sympathy for her. All she could see was a cold-hearted cripple man who was hiding something from her. If he loved her, he wouldn't let her cry this miserably before spilling the beans. “You! You are going to tell me all of it today, or I will kill you!” She couldn't hold it any longer. Even though she didn't mean her words, she only wanted him to give it all out. Quickly she reached for his neck and started pressing it, but August could tell she wasn't putting pressure so she wouldn’t harm him. She wasn't a ruthless person and he could tell. After all, she was the same person whom he fell in love with. Seeing he wasn't still giving in, she pulled off and changed tactics. “Caroline, listen to me please,” August said again in a bid to console her, but she didn't look like she would hear anything from him apart from an explanation for where he always went. “It seems you are not going to talk, huh?” She took a few steps back and sighed. Then, she began to rack her head up for anything, and in the end, she could only think of one thing that would be the best thing for the both of them. Wiping off the dry patches of tears on her face, she tuned in to look at him, forming a straight face. “We are getting a divorce!”

“A divorce?” August repeated the words as he clenched his fist tightly. Though he could see she was trying to intimidate him into giving out what she wanted to hear but then, in no circumstances was he ready to part ways with her. “I still love you. I won't agree to the divorce.” He said with a straight face, and she was forced to look at him. “Is that so? Then tell me the truth, or do you want to be forced to say it? Remember no one gives a damn about you and if you keep pushing me to the wall, you will hate it!” She said in a threatening tone. Although divorcing him wouldn't be that easy, not because she wasn't willing but because her grandmother who forced the marriage upon her just to subdue her wouldn’t want the divorce to go through. “It's better if you don't know. Moreover, it isn't like it will be beneficial to you.” August said helplessly. “So it's true, huh?” She suddenly said, and her hand flew to her mouth. Inhaling deeply, August clutched the edge of his wheelchair and tried to lift himself. Perhaps if he was able to reach where Caroline was and hug her to console her, then she might stop crying. That was what he thought, but it didn't seem like his legs agreed to it. The more he tried, the harder it was for him but he kept trying. Caroline, who was crying looked up to see this, and a smirk curled up on her sorrowful face. “What are you planning to do? Get up with those condemned legs? “You are helpless already so I see no reason why you'll want to waste your energy. Have you forgotten you wanted to leave before? Just save that energy for your mistress. I'm sure she will need it.” Caroline rebuked coldly and even chuckled to her heart of contempt. However, August ignored her and kept on trying to get up. He was determined to prove her wrong, but first, his legs had to agree to it. He kept pushing. His teeth gritted as he cursed at his weakness. He used to be a fearsome man, som

“Shut up! How dare you? Are you in the right state of your mind at all? Or has your brain turned into dust? How dare you talk to your brother like that?” Ms Winston retorted furiously with knitted lines on her forehead. How dare she talk like that when she was just a housewife? She was supposed to be at home taking care of her crippled husband and thus was supposed to hand over the company at once, yet, she was seemingly stubborn. It seemed she had to be taught a thorough lesson. Seeing she was siding with him as expected, Mark felt more thrilled. Seeing who emerged, everyone was shocked to the bones. August reed in the flesh? And shockingly he was walking on two feet? There was nothing but emotions stirring inside him and now that he could finally walk again, of course, he would stand by her side and make sure she was never bullied. “August?” Caroline muttered in shock. Not long ago, she left him at home, still seated on the will chair so what in the world was going on? After August and his wife left the villa, he led her into the car and drove off to their house. All along, Caroline didn’t say anything nor could she bring herself to be harsh to him anymore. He was no longer the cripple but someone strong who had just defended her from her family who wanted to take over everything she painstakingly built. In thirty minutes, they arrived home. Once again August led her to her room and tucked her under the sheet. She hadn’t been getting enough sleep ever since and tomorrow she would be busier, it would be better if she got enough rest lest she get dark circles around her eyes. “Take some rest okay? We will go to your company tomorrow, and you will handle things,” August said as he wrapped the sheet around her and also kissed her forehead. He was about to go when she grabbed his hand. He twirled his head only to find her eyes that had emotion in them. Furthermore, he knew she wanted to apologize and thanked him for defending her, but he didn’t thin

The next morning arrived. Caroline was a bit hesitant about going to the company as she thought that her brother might be there waiting for her, lest he humiliate her and mock her just like he always did. But August was there to give her an assurance saying with him, no one would be able to lay hands on her. His sudden change was something she was new to, but then this was the kind of man she liked. Someone who would stand by her decision and never let anyone bully her. Having this in mind, she proceeded to get dressed into a fine suit. Her professional aura was surged, and so was her work mood. Already, August was outside waiting for her, so as she came out, he smiled. “You look beautiful.” He complimented while her face flushed red. The situation became awkward to her, and she didn’t know if she was to go forward or backward. “I’ll get the car ready. Let’s go.” August chuckled as he pulled out the key walking off to the exit. “Be a good boy and open your mouth so I can empty this venom inside.” The man in suit turned towards August grinning as he spoke, taking him like a fool and someone who would easily be forced to do something out of fear. All fifteen men gathered stepped forward and were facing him. There was no way he would dare to say he wouldn't do as he was told.“Be fast. We staked a lot of money on you. Or do you want us to pin you on the floor and feed the poison to you by force?” Another man asked while the others began to chuckle.“I'll give you a chance. There was no news from David about Sniper or if he was spotted around.Caroline was safe and sound and so was he. He wasn't facing any trouble at all. Meanwhile, after August got out of the company, he waited for a while for David to join him before they started driving away, heading to Apex Corporation. August's attention was somewhat divided, half was focused on the road while the other was on David.“What's wrong? Talk to me.” He asked, curiosity getting the best of him.“I don't know who did this but August I don't think it's safe for you to keep being in this city or anywhere around Caroline,” David said, panicking.August didn't know what made him say such a thing but if he were to guess, he would say there was something or a danger that was coming and hanging around Caroline would put her at risk. He looked at the ladies conversing and spoke.“Don't sign this contract Caroline.” He said, causing everyone to turn in his direction wondering why he would say such a thing. It was already a good thing that they were getting more deals, but he was out to destroy it or what?
