Chapter 7

Sophia's grip tightened on Ethan's arm as the lobby hummed with quiet office traffic around them, every passing employee slowing their steps to glance at the confrontation unfolding beside the elevator.

"Let go of my arm, Sophia," Ethan said, voice low but firm enough that it carried.

"Not until you stop this ridiculous performance," she said, jaw locked tight. "I know exactly what this is about. You want money. So let's stop the little act and talk numbers like adults."

"I already told you I don't want a single dollar from you."

"Right," Sophia let out a short laugh, sharp and ugly as breaking glass. "The devoted little househusband who cooked my meals and folded my laundry for two straight years suddenly wants to walk away with nothing at all? Nobody is that noble, Ethan. You're playing hard to get so I'll double whatever you think I owe you."

Ethan pulled his arm free and stepped back, putting the full width of the hallway between them. The humiliation sat hot and heavy in his chest because he knew she wasn't even trying to be cruel on purpose. She genuinely believed that money was the only thing a man like him could ever want from a woman like her, and nothing he had done across two whole years of marriage had ever changed that picture in her head.

"You think everyone around you is a beggar waiting for scraps to fall off your table," Ethan said, voice rougher than he intended. "I gave you everything I had, Sophia, not because I wanted your money, but because I was stupid enough to think it meant something to you. It didn't. I don't need your money, I don't need your house, and I sure as hell don't need your permission to walk out of this marriage."

Nicole, who had been watching the whole scene with her arms folded and a grin spread wide across her face, let out a low whistle of genuine delight. "My, my," she said, tilting her head toward Sophia. "When did this one grow a spine? I've watched you walk all over him for two years straight and he never once barked back at you. This is genuinely fascinating."

"Stay out of this, Nicole," Sophia warned, her voice cold enough to freeze the air between them.

"I'm just saying," Nicole raised both palms innocently, still grinning like she was watching the best show of the year. "It's refreshing to see somebody finally tell you no right to your face. Most people around you are too scared to even sneeze without your permission first."

Nicole leaned closer to Ethan, her expression turning playful and warm. "By the way, you should know that Sophia nearly fainted this morning. Stomach ulcer flaring up again. She could barely stand at the car before I caught her arm."

"Nicole!" Sophia's voice cracked like a whip, her eyes flashing a look of pure fury that could have cut glass clean in half.

Nicole shrugged, completely unbothered. "What? He should know these things."

Something old stirred in Ethan for just a moment, a reflex buried so deep in his bones it moved before he could think, the instinct to worry about Sophia's health the way he always had, to rush home and cook her porridge and sit beside her bed all night watching the color come back to her face. But he pushed it down before it could take root anywhere. That version of him was dead. That version of him had died alone in a hospital room while this woman signed another man's name on a marriage license two hours away.

"Maybe you should call your doctor friend," Ethan said, meeting her eyes evenly. "I'm sure he'd love to take care of you."

Sophia's face went tight as a drum skin. "Come home, Ethan. I mean it."

"Why? So I can cook your dinner and wash your dishes and sit there like a house dog waiting by the door while you spend every evening thinking about somebody else?" Ethan shook his head slowly. "I used to make you gifts with my own hands, Sophia. I used to spend hours in that kitchen because I thought if I just loved you hard enough, cooked long enough, waited patiently enough, one day you'd feel something real for me. And you looked at every single thing I did and saw nothing but a servant earning his keep."

"That's because you were earning your keep," Sophia said, her voice gone cold and precise as a scalpel. "Where did you live? My house. What did you drive? My car. What did you eat? Food I paid for. So don't stand there playing some wounded prince when every last thing you had in this marriage came from my wallet, and you know it."

The words hit like stones thrown at close range. Ethan felt them land one by one and forced himself to stay standing in the quiet afterward, swallowing every reply that tasted like begging.

"Marrying you was the worst thing that ever happened to me," Ethan said, his voice steady even as something burned hot behind his eyes.

"Then leave," Sophia snapped. "But don't pretend you'll survive a week out there without everything I provided for you. And I want every gift I ever gave you returned. Every watch, every jacket, every pair of shoes. Since you're so eager to stand on your own two feet, you can do it barefoot for all I care."

"You think I packed my bags to make room for your gifts?" Ethan almost smiled at how completely she had missed the point. "I packed because I'm leaving you, Sophia. For good."

"Packed your bags to make room for some replacement woman, more like it," she hissed, then turned on her heel, her coat snapping behind her like a flag in a storm, and walked out of the lobby without another word or backward glance.

Ethan stood there watching her disappear through the glass doors, his chest still burning with everything he'd swallowed, then reached over and pressed the elevator button. The doors slid open immediately.

She's not upset because she's losing me, he thought, stepping inside. She's upset because I made her truth real by saying it out loud, and she'd rather pretend the whole world doesn't see what she really wants.

"Well," Nicole said from behind him, her voice bright with amusement as she caught the closing elevator door with one manicured hand and slipped inside. "That was the most entertainment I've had all week. Maybe all month."

"Glad I could help," Ethan said without looking at her.

"I'm serious though," Nicole said, leaning against the elevator wall with her arms crossed, studying him with open interest. "If this divorce actually goes through, you should give me a call sometime. I could use a man with that kind of fire in him." Her smile was warm and inviting in a way that would have been flattering if Ethan didn't already know exactly what kind of woman she was underneath all that charm.

Not a chance, he thought, keeping his face perfectly neutral. Out of the frying pan and straight into the volcano. Different kind of trouble but trouble all the same.

His polite silence was interrupted when the elevator stopped one floor down and the secretary from the front desk leaned in, whispering something urgently into Nicole's ear. Nicole's eyebrows shot up in genuine surprise, and she turned to look at Ethan with an expression that told him everything he needed to know before a single word was spoken.

The secretary had told her exactly why he had really come to this building today.

His job interview, his attempt at building a fresh start far away from Sophia's shadow, had just been exposed right inside Sophia's own social circle, and Ethan felt whatever advantage he'd been carefully building crumble quietly beneath his feet.

Chapter 10Whatever Kyle expected to hear from the other end of that phone call, it was not what came next.Sophia's voice cut through the speaker sharp and clear enough that Ethan could hear every single word standing three feet away, and Kyle's face began changing in real time, the charming mask crumbling like wet paper in the rain."Let me be very clear with you," Sophia said, her tone flat and final as a closing door. "I don't know what makes you think you're qualified to work at my company. You have no degree worth mentioning, no work experience that amounts to anything real, and the fact that you called my personal number directly instead of going through proper channels tells me everything I'll ever need to know about your sense of professionalism. You have the manners of a stray cat walking into someone's kitchen and expecting to be fed."Kyle's mouth opened but nothing came out. His hand tightened around the phone until his knuckles turned bone white."And let me add somethin

Chapter 9"No," Ethan said. The single word dropped into the dining room like a stone thrown into still water. Gerald's fork froze halfway to his mouth. The aunt's carefully painted smile cracked at the edges. Even Kyle looked up from his phone screen, surprised enough to stop scrolling for the first time all evening."What did you just say to me?" Gerald's voice went low and dangerous, the same tone he had used when Ethan was a boy and had broken something expensive."I said no," Ethan repeated, calm and steady as a man who had already survived the worst this family could do to him once before. "I'm not calling Sophia tonight to beg for investment money on your behalf. I'm not using my marriage as your personal bank account anymore."Gerald's fist hit the table hard enough to rattle every glass on the surface. "You ungrateful little animal," he snarled, his face flushing dark red. "I raised you, I fed you, I put clothes on your back when you had nothing, and this is how you repay me?

Chapter 8Ethan didn't wait to hear what Nicole would say next. The moment the elevator reached the ground floor he was through the doors and across the lobby before she could call after him. Outside, he swung his leg over his motorcycle, the one he had bought with his own savings long before Sophia's money ever touched his life, and pulled out of the parking lot without looking back. His phone buzzed halfway across the bridge. Gerald Cole's name on the screen."Your aunt's here for dinner," his father said, voice flat and clipped as always. "I expect you at the table by seven.""Fine," Ethan said, and hung up before his father could tack on conditions. He didn't go home right away. Instead he drove east until the streets turned quiet and tree lined, all the way to the cemetery on the outskirts of the city where his mother lay buried under a simple gray stone. He knelt in the grass and pulled a few weeds from around the base of it, smoothing the dirt carefully with his hands."You tol

Chapter 6Sophia had always run herself ragged at the office, skipping meals, drinking coffee instead of water, and her stomach had paid the price for years because of it. Ethan remembered how his cooking used to settle her ulcers back when he still bothered trying to help her. He doubted that mattered anymore. She had someone else now to bring her soup when her stomach turned sour, someone with a far prettier face than his own.Ryan left early that morning for an unexpected work call, apologizing twice before he rushed out the door, leaving Ethan alone to get ready for the interview by himself. He studied his reflection in the mirror for a moment, adjusting his collar carefully. Not the ethereal, magazine cover look of Sophia's precious doctor, but a solid, handsome face all the same, one that had simply been buried under years of exhaustion and neglect. The address Ryan sent him led to a glass skyscraper downtown, and something about the lobby tugged at Ethan's memory the moment he

They sat in Ryan's living room that evening, two beers sweating on the coffee table between them, and Ryan kept circling back to the same question like a dog worrying at an old bone."I still don't get it," Ryan said, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. "You loved her, man. Really loved her. I watched you turn yourself inside out for that woman for two straight years. What changed?""She was in love with someone else before we even married," Ethan said. "Some doctor her family never approved of. I finally understood that, really understood it deep down, and something in me just stopped caring what happens to her.""That's disgusting," Ryan said, jaw tight with real anger on his behalf. "She let you build a whole life around her while carrying someone else in her heart the entire time. That's not a marriage, that's a leash with a wedding ring attached to it.""Maybe," Ethan said, staring at the beer in his hands. "I loved her once. I won't pretend I didn't. But I'm done pouri
