Dozens of armed security drones flooded the metal platform within seconds, pointing heavy plasma cannons straight at Julian, Maya, Eleanor, and Marrow.
The bright red targeting lights painted their faces in an eerie glow, leaving zero room for escape. High above them, the massive holographic faces of the ruling council watched from the central tower with total coldness.
Julian tightened his grip on his rifle, stepping slightly in front of his sister. His muscles were already burning from the fight with Viktor, but he refused to show any sign of weakness. They had come too far and sacrificed too much to surrender now.
"Lower your weapons and kneel," a sharp metallic voice echoed from the nearest patrol drone. "Resistance is a capital offense in the upper realm."
Eleanor drew her silver dagger anyway, her boots firmly planted on the cold grating. "We did not cross over from the lower districts just to become your prisoners."
Old Man Marrow let out a rough laugh, kicking Viktor's unconscious body out of the way. "Looks like our welcome party brought extra toys."
Maya did not move an inch. Her dark eyes swept across the fleet of drones, analyzing their flight patterns, armor thickness, and communication frequencies in less than three seconds. A cold, calculating smile touched the corners of her mouth.
"They do not want to execute us," Maya said softly so only her group could hear.
Julian glanced down at her. "What do you mean? They have thousands of guns pointed right at us."
"If the council wanted us dead, the patrol drones would have fired the moment we stepped through the portal," Maya explained, her voice steady and sharp. "They broadcast our arrival across the entire sector on purpose. They want to test us, and more importantly, they want to see if we will hand over the Vance financial assets without a fight."
High above the platform, the center holographic face, a stern woman wearing a heavy golden crown, raised her hand to halt the advance of the security forces.
"You possess a sharp mind, young Malakor," the council leader said, her voice rich and powerful as it echoed across the open air. "Most lower-district scavengers would be begging for mercy by now. Instead, you stand there calculating our defenses."
"We did not come here to beg," Maya answered, stepping past Julian to face the giant projection head-on. "We came to collect what is rightfully ours. The Vance Corporation's sovereign debt across this continent belongs to us now, backed by every legal code your own system recognizes."
The council leader's eyes narrowed slightly. A murmur rippled through the golden-robed figures on the screen.
"Ownership in the upper realm is not decided by old paper ledgers or automated hacks," the council leader replied coldly. "It is decided by power. If you wish to claim the central treasury, you must pass the Trial of the Seven Gates. Survive the trials, and you earn your seat. Fail, and your names are wiped from history forever."
Julian frowned, stepping closer to his sister. "It is a trap. They just want to send us into a slaughterhouse so they do not have to pay out the debt."
"Of course it is a trap," Maya whispered back, her dark gaze burning with absolute confidence. "But it is also our only way directly into their central vault. We accept your terms."
The council leader gave a sharp nod. "Very well. The first gate opens in ten minutes. Prepare yourselves."
Before anyone else could speak, the holographic projections vanished into thin air. At the same time, the section of the metal platform beneath their feet groaned loudly and began to drop downward like a high-speed elevator, plunging them deep into the dark underbelly of the floating metropolis.
The ride was fast and brutal, the rushing wind roaring in their ears as the bright neon lights of the city disappeared above them.
When the platform finally slammed to a halt with a heavy metallic thud, they stepped out into a vast, underground chamber carved from black stone. The air here was freezing cold and smelled sharply of ozone and ancient dust.
In front of them stood a massive stone archway sealed by a thick wall of solid steel bars. Etched into the center of the metal was a glowing digital countdown timer showing nine minutes remaining.
"The first gate," Eleanor said, checking the ammo clip in her pistol as she looked around the dark, empty hall. "There are no guards here. Just us and whatever trap they built into this stone room."
Marrow walked up to the steel bars, tapping them with his iron pipe. The metal gave off a dull, heavy ring. "This is not just a door. It is a pressure lock."
Maya pulled her phone from her pocket and walked straight up to the digital timer embedded in the wall. Her fingers danced across the screen as she connected a small bypass cable to the interface port.
"They locked the transit grid behind us," Maya said, her voice completely calm despite the high stakes. "The moment we stepped off the elevator, the return path was sealed. We have to clear this trial to move forward."
Julian kept his rifle raised, scanning the dark shadows near the ceiling where massive stone statues of winged beasts looked down upon them. "How much time do we have before the gate opens?"
"Eight minutes," Maya replied, her eyes narrowing as lines of complex code scrolled rapidly across her phone. "And based on the encryption architecture, this first trial is not a puzzle. It is a combat test."
As if on cue, the stone floor beneath their feet began to tremble.
From the dark walls on both sides of the corridor, dozens of heavy stone panels slid open with a grinding roar. Heavy automated combat turrets rolled out on metal tracks, their twin barrels glowing with a bright, charging energy charge.
"Ambush!" Julian shouted, shoving Marrow to the side as the first wave of turrets opened fire with a deafening burst of plasma energy.
White-hot bolts of light scorched the stone walls, turning the air instantly thick with choking smoke and flying rock dust. Eleanor dropped to one knee, firing her pistol rapidly at the nearest turret, but her bullets bounced harmlessly off the heavy armor plating.
"Standard weapons will not scratch those shields!" Eleanor yelled over the roar of gunfire.
"They are linked to the central wall relay!" Maya called out, her fingers still flying across her phone screen while dodging a stray energy blast that melted the stone floor inches from her boots. "I need thirty seconds to hack their power loop!"
Julian stepped in front of Maya, shielding her with his body as he raised his rifle and fired an explosive round directly into the sensor lens of the closest turret. The machine sparked violently and went dead, but three more rolled out from the shadows to take its place.
The heat in the room rose rapidly, and the sound of charging plasma filled the air, leaving them with almost no cover and very little time left.
"Twenty seconds!" Maya said, her voice sharp and focused.
Julian pulled the pin on a tactical grenade from his belt, his eyes locked on the advancing wall of turrets. "Make it ten!"

The Glass Bridge
