Praying a game

Everyone looked in the direction of who spoke, at most expecting that perhaps a big shot might have walked in while they were so engrossed with the event, but to their surprise, who they saw was Ethan.

Ethan? The worthless junk dared to even stand up on his chair and bid such an amount? Was he perhaps nuts, or had he lost his mind already? What the heck was this?

“Did Axel tell him to speak up, or what?” Logan thought to himself as it didn’t make sense that Ethan would sanely stand up to bid on such an item from his pocket when he was worth only a few bucks, down to nothing.

But right after the thought crossed his mind, a mischievous smile followed. The reason was that, due to the laws of the auction set by Orion Asher, the bidder and the payer must be the same person. That meant you would have to pay for the item you bided and not get someone else to come to your rescue.

Since Ethan was bidding for this item, he had to be the one to pay for it. It seems he didn’t know of this rule; that was why he was busy putting on airs.

“Hahaha, you have dug your grave.” Logan thought to himself, smirking.

Since that was the case, it was time to pay him back in his own coin. Since he thought he could be smug, Logan thought about turning it into a game to teach him a lesson.

“Two hundred and ten million.” He suddenly yelled, and all attention was diverted back to him again. Logan then looked at Ethan, beckoning him to fall for the trap, and it seemed to be working.

“Two hundred and twenty million.” Ethan remained unfazed by all this. He didn’t care if Logan was playing a game just to lure him in; all he wanted was that ring, and he was going to get it.

As for the crowd, they gasped again. There had been rumors of someone unable to pay for an item after bidding so high. He had been physically punished and banished from such an event.

Not only did he face public disgrace, but he was hospitalized for a long time for breaking the rules, yet it seems another dummy was about to throw himself into the hook too.

Unable to hold it in anymore, Amelia stood up and walked toward Ethan. She leaned over and whispered into his ear.

“Do you think the black card you stole can help you out here? I suggest you leave at once and not cause trouble, or else you will end up in the worst predicament ever.”

Ethan looked at her and smiled. “I didn’t ask you to worry about me. You can go back to your seat and stop being a busybody”

“Huh?” Amelia was caught off guard by his response, and it made her fume in anger, but instead of fighting it out with him, she walked back to her seat. When the time comes, he would be exposed. Since he liked being stupid, there was no need to save him.

On the other hand, Axel looked at her and chuckled lightly. Ethan's response to her was precisely what she wanted to hear, and for that, she was impressed.

The auction continued.

“Two hundred and fifty million.” Logan raised the bid again. This had gone far above the maximum amount, but who cares? Ethan was claiming he had money, right? Soon, one of them would be left in the mud, and Logan was confident that it wouldn’t be him.

“Two hundred and seventy million,” Ethan spoke right after, causing the crowd to frown. They had branded him a fool already. The higher he bided, the higher the punishment, yet he didn’t look like he would relent anytime soon.

“Three hundred million.” Logan raised the price again. At this point, he had also exceeded his limit, but he didn’t care. He intended to keep goading Ethan to keep increasing the price just so he could withdraw at the last moment and let him win.

It was just a pretense so Ethan could fall into public humiliation and be punished severely later on by the time he couldn’t afford to pay the price.

“Such a fool.” Axel looked at Logan and said dejectedly. It was already obvious what he was trying to do, but he would be a fool to think he could win against Ethan. Does he know how much was on his card? If he did, he might be too shocked to say anything for years.

As for Ethan, he looked at Logan, and the frown on his face deepened. Just when the crowd thought he was on the verge of backing down, his next words made the hall turn silent.

“Five hundred million dollars.” Ethan stood proudly as he uttered the words.

What? Five hundred million dollars for a ring? At this point, everyone was just too shocked that they had to hold on to something to be able to keep their stamina on the floor.

That was like five times the minimum bidding price, yet this man called it out like it was nothing? What in the world was this?

Amelia was horrified. This man indeed had a death wish. He had gone mad already. She knew him more than anyone here. He had almost no worth. He was worth just a few bucks, which he earned from the bar, yet he had the balls to show off here?

Meanwhile, Logan was now happy that Ethan had fallen into the trap, and thus, it was time for him to back out.

“Anyone else?” The MC had a grim expression on his face as he never thought things would go this way. Every auction, there used to be a competition, but this one was the first that had such a staggering price.

He looked around, especially at Logan, to see if he would still show interest, but he didn’t.

“Five hundred million, going once, going twice…the vintage ring has been sold to the gentleman there.” The MC said loudly as he pointed at Ethan.

Everyone’s face became solemn. So that was it? This would be when Ethan would be punished, right? Besides, he deserved it.

No one showed pity toward him or looked like they cared, since he brought it upon himself after all.

Logan smiled, and to get to the bottom of the matter, he stepped forward and spoke.

“Sir, since the item has been won over by Mr. Ethan here. I believe it’s time for payment, and mind you, the bidder must also be the payer of the item. Can we proceed to confirm, with everyone present here, if Mr. Ethan here has the full capacity to pay for the item with his name?”

  • This isn't romance

Axel was still doing the math in her head when she realized that it was going to cost him a lot to acquire the back, not to mention the fact that they had no real reason to sell off the company. The bank had been so optimized that they had barely ever made any losses in the past half decade, so convincing them to sell would be next to impossible. It would involve probably a double payment of what the company is worth. The scale of the cost of such a decision was heavy, and it hit Axel like a delayed shockwave. For a moment, just a brief moment, her mind betrayed her. A thought slipped into her head uninvited, but it felt dangerously warm to think of, and she couldn’t stop the thought.‘Does that mean I matter that much to him?’ she thought to herself as a warm smile began to form on her face.Ava caught the shift with the side of her eyes instantly and scoffed.“Don’t read into it,” she said firmly. “This isn’t romantic.”Axel flushed. “I didn’t…”“You did,” Ava cut in, not giving Ax

  • Beautiful eyes

“Master Ethan,” Ava cleared her throat at the first chance she got, so she could remind him of the need to return home without interrupting their conversation in a disrespectful manner.“What is it?” Ethan raised his head to her.“You have work to get back to tomorrow sir,” Ava said.“You should consider rounding up here so you can be well rested for tomorrow’s activities, sir.”She didn’t want to have to use this sentence, because she didn’t want him going back to the office, at least, not for another week. With her statement just now, she had basically given him ammo to use against her when she suggested he should stay home for a while to let things cool off.But it was either that or she would be unable to get the information she wanted on the shoot out from him.Ethan looked at Axel for a moment then nodded.“I will have to leave now, Ava is right,” he said as he got up.“Thank you for taking out time to check in on me, I really appreciate it… Ethan,” she paused before saying his

  • beyond all odds

When she finished, silence settled between them again for a moment before Ethan finally cleared his throat and spoke.“I can intervene,” he said with a low but audible tone.Axel looked at him at the point like she was confused, trying to figure out where his response was coming from.Ethan sat up in his spot on the couch and spoke a little clearly.“I can intervene with whatever is going on at your place of work… if you want me to, of course,” he added that last part to assure her that there was no pressure.Axel looked up at Ava that was already looking at them at this point, still at the window, and Ethan gently held her cheek, softly directing her eyes back to him.“Don’t worry about Ava, you don’t need her permission for this,” Ethan said, knowing that if Ava gave Axel a single look, Axel will lose every inclination to say yes, so he pulled her eyes down to his to make sure her decision here was her decision fully.“No!” Axel shook her head immediately, removing his hand from her

  • Tell me about today

“Oh for God’s sake,” Ava was already getting pissed.“Step aside,” she said and pushed past Axel, forcing her way into the house before gesturing for Ethan to walk in.Ethan walked into the house with Ava following behind him immediately, leaving Axel at the door for a moment before she quickly tried to recover from her thoughts and shut the door. She shut the door and turned to watch her guests. She caught herself watching just Ethan though, but she didn’t stop herself. She managed to convince herself that it was fine because she had spent more time seeing Ava than she saw Ethan since she came to his home. She knew that that was a lie, but she held on to that lie and just kept watching him.He looked different from the last time she’d seen him, which was just earlier today, but so much had happened with her today that it felt like it had been a while since she last saw him. He looked quieter now, and from the way he had spoken to her at the door a moment ago, he was a lot less sharp

  • Self-sabotage

Axel stood in the middle of her new apartment, clad in grey pajamas as she tried hard to convince herself it felt like home.It didn’t.Ava had gone out of her way to fix the place up before she closed from work for the day.The place was clean, modern, and thoughtfully arranged, but that was just about it, nothing about it felt unique to her, or to anyone, it was all just plain and bland. At least, while at the Villa, even if it also didn’t feel like it was home, a lot of things there felt personal, like there were stories behind them. Here though, there was literally nothing. The place had neutral walls, minimal furniture, lights that were bright enough to erase shadows but she was not feeling any comforting warmth from them.Nothing here bore her imprint yet, and there was still the fact that it was all temporary, so… she couldn’t even hope to create any memories or personalize anything in here.Everything was temporary. That was the word that kept circling in her head, temporary.

  • Abandoned

The answers Ava was giving were immediate and unapologetic. It was probably the first time he could remember that she had talked to him for so long without calling him Master Ethan or any of the titles he usually would have had to repeatedly remind her not to use.For a brief moment, it made him worried that she might be seeing him in a different light, but he eventually pushed the thought aside.Ava was too loyal to let an incident like that redefine how she saw him. After a while, the conversation drifted back to Axel without friction this time.Ethan was a lot more relaxed talking about it now, and even though he knew that Ava had her personal bias towards Axel, the tension that had earlier sharpened every word was now absent.Ava explained again, but now with detail instead of rushing through it like it was some insignificant event.“Alexander Cole isn’t targeting her,” she said. “I mean, he does want her back, but not as much as he wants to lay his hands on you.”“His target is y
