Chapter 6

Jimmy walked out of the hotel and booked a cab to the shopping district. Sabastein and Jeffrey were waiting for him there.

The whole ride, his thoughts kept jumping between Mirabel and the woman who called herself his mother. He couldn't decide which one hurt more.

When the cab stopped, he saw his friends standing at the corner of a street full of luxury shops. Both of them rushed toward him as soon as they saw his face.

"Jimmy, your face!" Sabastein said. "Those animals really did this to you?"

"The video has been going around the campus group chat all morning," Jeffrey said angrily. "Everybody has seen it."

"Mirabel sent it herself," Sabastein added. "I swear, I wanted to go to Justin's house and break his jaw."

Jeffrey clenched his fists. "I never liked that girl, Jimmy. Not for one single day."

"I kept quiet because you loved her," he continued. "You treated her like she was your whole world."

Jimmy lowered his head. "I know," he said softly. "I was a fool."

"You weren't a fool," Sabastein said. "You were just loyal to someone who didn't deserve it."

Jimmy wanted to say something, but his phone started to ring. He looked at the screen, and his heart skipped.

It was the same blank caller ID from last night. He stepped away from his friends and answered.

"Jimmy, my son," Diana said warmly. "Did you sleep well?"

"Not really," Jimmy replied. "It was a long night."

"I called because I need something from you," she said. "Tonight is the birthday party of your school's chancellor."

"For months, he has been sending me invitations," she continued. "He has begged me to be the special guest of honor."

"I ignored every single one," she said. "But now that my son is back in my life, I want you to go in my place."

"Me?" Jimmy asked. "Why would you send me?"

"Because I want everyone to know that you are my son," Diana said firmly. "I want them to see who you are."

Jimmy's heart pounded. Nobody had ever been proud to call him theirs.

"Why is the chancellor so desperate to have you there?" he asked. "He is a very important man in this city."

Diana laughed. "Because my presence alone will help him and his friends secure contracts worth billions of dollars."

"I don't have to do anything," she said. "Just showing up is enough for them to brag about those deals."

Jimmy was stunned. His mother was really that powerful.

"There is something else," Diana said. "You have the right to order any car of your choice from Luxury Autos."

"Luxury Autos?" Jimmy asked. "The biggest car dealership in the city?"

"I own that company," she said. "I own many others, and they will all be yours when we meet."

Jimmy almost dropped the phone. His head spun, because if she was this successful, why did she leave him at an orphanage?

That question had followed him his whole life. He couldn't hold it in anymore.

He walked away from his friends a bit. He wiped his sweaty palm on his hoodie, and his thumb accidentally pressed the speaker button.

"Who are you, really?" he asked.

There was a soft smile in her voice. "I knew you would ask," she said.

"I'm big in every way you can imagine," Diana said. "But you don't need to stress your brain about it."

"Soon, maybe even tomorrow, we will meet," she continued. "Then you will learn everything you need to know."

"Why did you leave me?" Jimmy asked. His voice cracked.

The line went quiet for a moment. He heard her take a deep, shaky breath.

"Everything has a reason, my son," she said. "I promise you will hear it from my own mouth."

"For now, I just want you to focus on yourself," she added. "Heal from all the pain you suffered while I was away."

Jimmy wiped a tear from his eye before it fell. He had waited 21 years for someone to say those words.

"Since you will represent me," Diana said, "you will be treated with the utmost respect. Even the elite guests will treat you like royalty."

Jimmy frowned. He didn't know that any elite guests would attend.

He knew the chancellor was big, because he led the number one school in the city. But he had never imagined that anyone more important would show up.

"Who are the top elite guests that will be there?" he asked out of curiosity.

Diana laughed lightly. "Gabriel Osborne, Silvia Cannon, Taylor Henson, Norma Regard, and Hannah Sweedy," she said casually.

Jimmy's mouth opened on its own. He knew every one of those names.

But what shocked him more was how she said them. She spoke as if they were her subordinates.

"Wait," he said. "Let me make sure I heard right."

"Gabriel Osborne, the governor of the state?" he asked. "Silvia Cannon, the mayor of this city?"

"Taylor Henson, the richest man in the city? Norma Regard, the minister of education, who is also the president's special envoy to the party?"

"And Hannah Sweedy, the biggest influencer in the city, with over 35 million followers?"

"Yes, those are the ones," Diana said, laughing. "But they are nothing compared to me."

"As a matter of fact, they are all subordinates of my subordinates."

Jimmy's jaw dropped. He couldn't believe what he had just heard.

He had read many rags-to-riches stories to escape reality. In those stories, the poor hero always rose to rule over the powerful.

If his mother was telling the truth, that would be his life. The chancellor and every elite guest would be his subordinates too.

Jimmy wanted to scream with joy, but he held it in. His mother could hear his excited breathing over the phone.

"I have already told all of them that my son will represent me," she said. "Once you announce yourself, they will bow to you."

Jimmy smiled broadly. His poor, powerless identity was finally gone, and he would walk in tonight as the son of Diana Levruff.

"I am the son of Diana Levruff," he whispered happily to himself.

"Don't get too worked up," Diana said, laughing. "You haven't seen anything yet compared to what I have prepared for you."

"Oh, and one more thing," she added. "All the elites will bring their children, and some of their daughters may interest you."

"None of them will dare to refuse you once they know who you are. They will beg for your attention."

The line went quiet, and Jimmy thought the call had ended. He didn't even check the screen.

A new girl could be exactly what he needed right now. Especially if it would punish Mirabel.

He jumped and danced a little right there on the sidewalk. For the first time in his life, he felt like the luckiest man alive.

Tonight was going to be mind-blowing. Everyone who looked down on him would see him in a new light.

Justin's family was nothing compared to those elites. When Justin saw them bowing to Jimmy, he would cry.

And Mirabel thought he was useless and dumped him. She would cry when the daughters of those elites begged for his attention.

"Jimmy?" a voice said behind him. He froze.

He turned around slowly. Sabastein and Jeffrey were standing there with wide eyes.

They had been behind him for a while. The phone's speaker was still on, and they had heard everything.

Nobody said a word. All three boys just stared at each other, waiting for an explanation.

After a minute of awkward silence, Jeffrey finally spoke. He stepped closer to Jimmy.

"Did you just say you're the son of Diana Levruff?" he asked. "Who is she?"

"Is that your lost mother?" Sabastein asked. "The one who left you at the orphanage as a baby?"

Jimmy slowly nodded. His friends rushed forward and hugged him tightly.

For the first time in a long while, Jimmy felt like he truly belonged to a family. But he was also worried, because his identity had been exposed before he was ready.

"Why didn't you tell us you found her?" Jeffrey asked.

"You know we helped you search the web for years," Sabastein said. "I'm just glad you finally found her."

Jimmy rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm sorry," he said. "She only called me last night, and I'm still trying to process everything."

"Thank you both for helping me all those years," he added. "I promise I will repay you in full."

The boys laughed and said they had to celebrate. Jeffrey leaned toward Sabastein and whispered.

"At least this will take his mind off Mirabel," he said.

They laughed, and Jimmy just smiled. He knew Jeffrey was right.

"So, is your mother some secret billionaire?" Sabastein joked. "Has she come back to change your life like in those rags-to-riches stories?"

"Maybe she is," Jeffrey added, grinning. "Maybe you're a prince."

Jimmy smiled. "I don't know yet," he said. "I'll find out when we meet."

"But for now, she sent me $20,000,000 just for my clean-up."

"I thought you won that money from betting," Jeffrey said. "Why did you lie?"

"I'm sorry," Jimmy said. "I didn't know how to explain it."

Their eyes widened in shock. $20,000,000 was a huge amount for any of them, but most especially for Jimmy, whose whole financial history didn't even add up to $300,000.

They jumped and celebrated with him, truly happy. After a while, they started giving him advice.

"Put 70 to 90 percent of it into investments," Sabastein suggested. "Crypto, stocks, real estate, or small startups."

"Or keep it in a trust fund like ours until we graduate next year," he added.

"Don't get carried away by the money," Jeffrey warned. "And don't chase revenge against Mirabel and Justin just because you have cash now."

"Plan your life carefully," he said.

Jimmy knew the advice came from a place of love. Sabastein and Jeffrey weren't just his friends; they were his orphan brothers.

They had lost their parents when they were 10 and 8. Their parents weren't mega rich like Justin's, but they left the boys over $50,000,000.

They could only access it after they graduated. That was why they advised Jimmy so carefully.

Jimmy touched their shoulders. "Thank you for looking after me all these years," he said.

"Now it's my turn to take care of you. If things go well with my mother, you two will never lack anything again."

The boys thanked him, but they advised him again. Jimmy shook his head.

"This money is for my clean-up before meeting my mother," he said. "It's not for investing."

"Who knows what she has in store for me? For now, I want to spend it on my Day Ones."

The boys still had reservations. They had watched Jimmy suffer for too many years to see him throw away that much money.

"What if this is some one-time luck?" Sabastein asked. "Spend a little until you meet her, then decide."

"Think about it, Jimmy," Jeffrey added. "You're not 100% sure about this woman yet."

Just as the argument continued, a voice came from the phone in Jimmy's hand. "Hello, boys..."

They all froze. Jimmy checked the screen, and his eyes went wide.

The call had never ended. His mother had patiently listened to everything.

Her voice was shaking, and she sounded emotional.

"Jeffrey, Sabastein," Diana said. "Thank you for everything you did for my son while I was away."

"And thank you for your wise counsel," she added. "But don't worry about the $20,000,000, because there is more where that came from."

"Go ahead and spend it freely," she said.

"Are you sure, ma'am?" the boys asked at the same time.

Diana laughed. "You will know who I am soon, and you will realize that this money is only a drop in the ocean."

Jimmy just smiled while the brothers jumped for joy.

"Oh, and I will send some gifts to your location shortly," Diana added.

The boys thanked her again, and the call finally ended.

Jimmy knew his friends were right to be careful. But after the last 2 days, he needed this.

Finally, they agreed to go on a spending spree. They would buy clothes first and cars later.

They had to turn up big at the party tonight. They had to show Mirabel that it was her loss and not Jimmy's.

The three of them marched toward the biggest clothing store on the street. It was so expensive that even the mannequins looked rich.

They walked with no worry, fear, or care. Their time had finally come, and nobody would oppress them again.

Or so they thought.

Just as they reached the entrance, security guards and staff rushed forward. Three huge bouncers charged through the door.

They pushed the boys out of the way like a trailer was coming through. The boys stumbled and fell to the ground.

A sudden buzz filled the air. Then a chant began: "Mr. Billionaire! Mr. Billionaire!"

The boys scrambled back to their feet. They looked up and saw a man walking in like he owned the place.

Everyone was chanting for him and calling him "Mr. Billionaire." Staff members bowed deeply as he passed.

The boys quietly stood aside. After he passed, they dusted off their clothes and followed him in.

Nobody apologized to them. Not the security guards, not the staff.

The boys didn't complain, even though it hurt that they were treated without any regard. Jimmy was the most hurt of all.

He couldn't stand being oppressed anymore, now that he was no longer a nobody. If his mother was who she said she was, what would she do to this Mr. Billionaire?

His friends saw the anger on his face. "Please, let it go," Jeffrey whispered.

Jimmy sighed and nodded. Together, they walked into the store.
