Daniel read the message for the third time, hoping he had misunderstood it. The words had not changed. Someone knew he had found Samuel Adeyemi's notebook, and that person was determined to stop him from meeting the missing witness. He looked across the living room at Michael, who had come to the apartment shortly after Daniel's call.

"Someone must be watching us," Daniel said. "They knew what we found in Samuel's office, and they know about tomorrow's meeting."

Michael adjusted his glasses and studied the screen. "Then Samuel may be in greater danger than we thought. And we cannot assume the railway station is safe."

"Then we cancel."

"If Samuel is the only person who can explain what happened to your grandfather's original documents, cancelling gives our enemies more time to find him. We must go, but carefully."

Daniel walked to the window. People were returning from work, and the streetlights were coming on. Everything outside looked normal, yet he could no longer trust it. A man who had spent his life counting coins had become the target of people who controlled billions. He thought of his grandfather's letter: Trust evidence more than promises. Right now he had neither.

"What if Victor is behind all of this?"

"We do not have enough evidence to accuse him," Michael said. "The receptionist saw him visit Samuel, and the notebook has his initials. That is all. If we accuse him without proof, he may destroy evidence and turn the company against you."

"Then I will get proof before he knows what I am doing."

Michael nodded slowly. "That is the right attitude. But do not confuse courage with carelessness."

Amara came in carrying three cups of tea. She had heard enough to know the situation was more serious than Daniel had admitted. "Is this about the man who called you?"

Daniel hesitated. He had wanted to keep her away from danger, but he was beginning to see that hiding the truth would only make things worse. "Yes. Samuel Adeyemi says he knows what my grandfather left behind. He wants to meet me tomorrow at six, at the old railway station."

Amara put the cups down. "And you are going?"

"I have to."

"What if the message was a warning that they mean to hurt you?"

"Then I will be careful."

She looked at Michael, hoping he would talk Daniel out of it, but the lawyer stayed silent. She sat beside her husband.

"I know I have not always supported you the way I should. I let my family and Adrian make me doubt you, and I am sorry. But I cannot stand by and watch you walk into danger."

For months Daniel had felt he was fighting alone in his marriage. Her words did not erase the pain, but they reminded him that the marriage might still be saved.

"I do not want you involved," he said gently.

"You do not get to decide that for me. Whatever happens to you happens to me too. If someone is threatening you, I deserve the truth."

Michael cleared his throat. "She is right about one thing. We need to know whom we can trust. Until we understand how information is leaking, tomorrow's meeting stays between the three of us."

"Then I will tell no one," Amara said. "Not even my mother."

Daniel almost smiled. A week ago, that promise would have been impossible.

Michael laid out the plan. He would arrive an hour early and watch the entrances. Daniel would go in at six, and if anything felt wrong, he would walk out. Amara would stay home with her phone close. Michael told Daniel to save the threatening message and not reply to it, and said he would contact a security professional he trusted, without revealing the meeting.

That night Daniel barely slept. Each time he closed his eyes, he saw the photograph of his grandfather beside Victor on the day the family was told he had died. Had Victor known his brother was alive? Had he helped hide the truth, or simply waited for the chance to take the empire? He thought of Samuel's frightened voice on the phone and wondered how long a man could hide from people who seemed to know every move.

Shortly after midnight, his phone vibrated. An unknown number: Your grandfather trusted the wrong person, and now you are making the same mistake. Stay away from Samuel.

Before he could take a screenshot, a second message arrived: Ask Michael what happened to the last lawyer who tried to expose Victor.

Daniel's mouth went dry. Michael had left the apartment only hours ago. Why would a stranger tell him to question the one man helping him? Was it a lie meant to split them, or a warning he should have heard sooner?

A cold feeling settled in his stomach. He called Michael, but nobody answered. He tried again and heard only a recording saying the number was unavailable. He pulled on his jacket and was about to order a taxi when the phone rang. It was Michael.

"Listen carefully," the lawyer said in a low voice. He spoke too fast, like a man walking while he talked. "Someone has been following me since I left your apartment. I lost the car, but I have found something that changes everything."

"What?"

"Samuel is not the first person connected to your grandfather's affairs to disappear. A lawyer named Peter Lawson vanished shortly before your grandfather was officially declared dead."

Daniel gripped the phone. "Was Victor involved?"

"I do not know yet. But I found Peter's old case file, and it mentions the blue ledger. I believe the ledger holds the proof we need."

"Where is it?"

"According to the file, Samuel was not the one keeping it. He was supposed to deliver it to someone else."

"Who?"

Michael paused. Daniel heard a door slam somewhere behind him. "I have to go," Michael whispered. "Someone has found me."

The line went dead. Daniel called again and again, but there was no answer. Then a final message appeared, from Michael's own number: Do not go to the railway station tomorrow. Samuel is not the only person waiting for you.

Daniel read it several times. He could not tell whether Michael had sent it as a warning or whether someone else now held his phone. He thought of Amara asleep in the next room. Whatever he chose, she would be part of it. He sat on the edge of the bed with the phone in his hand and counted the hours until six.

One thing was certain. The meeting had become far more dangerous than he had imagined, and somewhere in the city, someone who knew the truth about his grandfather was waiting for Daniel's next move.

  • The Woman Who Should Be Dead

Daniel stood motionless in the living room, staring at his phone as if the woman might call back if he waited long enough. Her voice had sounded weak but familiar, and her words refused to leave his mind. Amara watched him with growing concern."What happened? Who called?"He slowly lowered the phone. "She said her name was Grace. She said she knew what happened to my grandfather. When I asked who she was, she said she was the person he believed was dead."Amara covered her mouth. "Do you think it was your mother?""I do not know what to think anymore."Daniel had spent years accepting that his mother was gone. He remembered the day his relatives gathered around him and explained that he would never see her again. He remembered crying until he fell asleep, and his grandfather holding him and promising he would always be protected. Now every memory seemed to hold a question he had never thought to ask.Michael arrived within half an hour. He studied the number and tried calling it, but

  • The Secret About His Mother

Daniel stared at Samuel as if he had spoken another language. His mother had died when he was a child, and he had lived for years with the memory of losing her. Now Samuel was saying she had been trusted with a secret that could change everything he believed about his family."What do you mean my mother had the ledger?" he demanded. "She died years ago. How could my grandfather have given her anything?"Samuel gripped his arm. "I know how this sounds. But your mother knew more about the Okafor family than you were ever told. Your grandfather trusted her because she was the only person who questioned his decisions without wanting anything from his wealth."Before Daniel could ask more, the two men from the black car came closer. One was tall and broad-shouldered. The other had a scar running from his left cheek to the edge of his jaw."Mr Adeyemi," the tall man called, "you have caused enough trouble. Come with us and nobody needs to get hurt."Samuel stepped behind Daniel. "Do not lis

  • Adrian's Hidden Connection

Daniel could hardly believe what he was seeing. The name on Zara's document was clear. Adrian Cole, the wealthy man who had insulted him and tried to turn Amara against him, was tied to the suspicious transactions at the Okafor Group."Could this be a trap?" Daniel asked Michael as they left the café. "Adrian may have placed his name there to make us suspect him.""That is possible," Michael replied. "We must verify the records before drawing conclusions. I do remember hearing that Adrian's family did business with your uncle years ago, but I never knew it went beyond ordinary dealings."Daniel stopped at the kerb. "Why would Adrian want money from my grandfather's company when his family is already wealthy?""People with money often want more, especially when they think they will not be caught. But we should not assume greed is his only reason."Daniel put the document inside his jacket. He had meant to spend the day preparing for Samuel, but Zara had changed everything. If Adrian wa

  • The Man Behind The Ledger

Daniel did not sleep for the rest of the night. He sat on the edge of his bed with the phone in his hand, rereading the last message from Michael's number. He had no way of knowing whether the lawyer was safe or whether someone else held his phone. Every minute made him more anxious, but he knew that rushing into the street without a plan could deliver him straight to his enemies. At six in the morning he called again. The phone rang several times before a man answered."Who is this?" Daniel demanded. After a pause, a familiar voice replied. "Daniel, it is me."Relief washed over him. "Michael, where have you been? I thought something had happened to you.""Something nearly did. I was followed last night and had to switch off my phone and hide. I am using another line now. Tell me, did you receive a message from my number?""Yes. It told me not to go to the railway station."Michael was silent for a moment. "I did not send it."Daniel heard him breathe out. "Someone does not want you

  • The Missing Witness

Daniel stood beside the dining table with the phoneagainst his ear. The witness to his grandfather's final will had been missing for three days, and the document that could name that person had been stolen. He could no longer believe in coincidence."Michael, do you know who the witness is?""I know the name, but I must check it against the original records first. Your grandfather had me keep some details confidential until the inheritance process began, and the missing document held information that is not in the ordinary copy of the will.""Why did you not tell me earlier?""Because I only learned this evening that the witness was missing. The number on file had been disconnected, and nobody at the person's former office knows where they have gone."Daniel walked to the window. The street was quiet, and most of the neighbouring lights had gone out. He wondered whether the sender of the threatening message was watching his apartment. "Send me the name as soon as you confirm it.""I
