Chapter 4: Encounter with a Middle School Classmate
As Lawrence’s class teacher, Jasmine knew his family background and his relationship with Lucy. She had always looked after him. After learning what had happened that night, she grew worried and called. “Um…” Hearing her voice, Lawrence understood why Jasmine was calling, but for a moment he didn’t know what to say. “Lawrence, listen to me,” Jasmine said gently. “You can always find another job if you lose one, or another girlfriend if one leaves. Don’t do anything foolish. You’re still young, with a bright future. Stay home tonight. Rest well. Tomorrow will be better.” Her words were warm which made Lawrence feel unexpectedly moved. “Don’t worry, Teacher Jasmine. I really am fine,” he said softly. How could he not be fine? He had just learned he was heir to the world’s most powerful family and had ten million dollars as pocket money. Life couldn’t look brighter. “That’s good. Then I won’t disturb you. Sleep early,” Jasmine replied. “Okay. Good night, Miss Jasmine.” “Good night.” They hung up. Lawrence set the phone aside, lay on his bed, and drifted into sleep staring at the ceiling. The next morning, his phone rang again. Groggy and unrested, he picked it up to see his roommate, Ralph Hugo. “Ralph? Why so early?” Lawrence muttered with a yawn. “Didn’t you check the group chat yesterday? Today’s Ms. Jasmine’s birthday. Everyone’s already here for the celebration. Only you, Lucy, and Michael aren’t here yet,” Ralp’s voice said, sounding puzzled. Lawrence smacked his forehead. How could he have forgotten Jasmine’s birthday? She had graduated only recently with her master’s and was close in age to her students, which made her more like a friend than a teacher. She treated Lawrence even better than most, always keeping an eye on him because of his situation. Whenever the school had benefits to hand out, she thought of him first. She had gone to his part-time jobs in person to make sure he wasn’t being cheated. Sometimes, she even worried about his nutrition and cooked extra meals for him. If not for the difference in gender, she might have invited him to live with her so she could take proper care of him. To Lawrence, Jasmine wasn’t just a teacher—she was more like family, an older sister who gave him the warmth of home. But after the whirlwind of betrayal, heartbreak, and sudden wealth the night before, he had completely forgotten the occasion, let alone checked group messages. Since it was Jasmine’s birthday, he decided he should buy her a proper gift. He had money now, after all. “Ralph, help me ask for leave in class. Say I’ve got something important, don't worry I will buy you a cupcake as a form of payment,” Lawrence said, and hung up before Ralph could reply. After a quick wash, he headed straight to Cesar Mall. Half an hour later, he stepped out of the taxi, staring up at the glittering complex with awe. He had never dreamed he would be shopping there. Cesar Mall was the largest in Light City, a hub for the world’s top luxury brands. Only the city’s wealthiest frequented it. If he was buying a gift for Jasmine, he couldn’t pick anything shabby. This was the place. Inside, as he considered what to buy, Lucy’s betrayal resurfaced in his mind—she had left him for a handbag. So, a handbag it would be. Women never seemed able to resist them, especially luxury ones. Decision made, he walked straight to Dior brand side. The boutique was bright, lavish, and filled with the hum of wealthy shoppers. “Hello, sir. How may I help you?” a salesperson greeted warmly at first, but her smile faltered when she noticed Lawrence’s simple, street-market clothes. Though still polite outwardly, her eyes gave her away as it was filled with disdain. 'Another broke kid,' she thought. 'Here to look, not to buy. What a waste of time.' Dior attracted plenty of gawkers who came just to admire what they couldn’t afford, and in her mind, Lawrence was no different. Lawrence ignored her look. He was used to it. Calmly, he said, “I want to see the bags. Could you recommend something?” It was his first time in Dior. Faced with rows of items, he didn’t know how to choose. The salesperson’s expression soured when she heard his words. With a roll of her eyes, she pointed lazily toward the display. “They’re all there. Look for yourself. Just don’t touch anything. If you break it, you won’t be able to pay for it.” "What the hell do you mean I should look by myself? Is that how you treat customers?" Lawrence’s brow furrowed, as he respond to her. Feeling slightly pissed. "What do you...," the woman’s demeanor suddenly flipped completely as she halt her words and hurriedly past him toward the entrance, her face full of flattery. “Mr. Dylan, welcome! What will you be buying today? And is this your girlfriend? She’s gorgeous!” Lawrence turned, catching sight of a tall mature man walking in with an attractive woman on his arm. She clung to him tightly, pressing her chest against him as they entered. Dylan Walker smiled, feeling please at Mary's flattering. “Mary, this is my girlfriend, Karen Cooper. We were passing by, so I thought I’d bring her in to pick a bag, you know it's been long I come for shopping.” "Indeed, once in a while. Shopping helps calm the mind." Mary respond back with a light formal smile on her face. To her this is a big fish, as the commission from him will definitely be awesome. Lawrence’s eyes narrowed as he looked at the woman who looked familiar. After a moment, he remembered. “You’re Karen, from Higher High School?” he asked. Karen turned toward him, surprised at someone recognising her. Her expression flickered with recognition before settling into colder one. “Lawrence? Why are you here?” she exclaimed, not with joy at meeting an old classmate, but with disdain.Latest Chapter

---Girls' Team — Mei LingMei Ling walked to the podium with the confidence of someone who'd never doubted herself once."Health tech. Specifically, remote monitoring devices for elderly patients living alone."She clicked a remote. Data filled the screen."Aging population. Rising healthcare costs. Families desperate for peace of mind. The market exists and it's growing."She continued. "Year one: develop prototype, partner with one assisted living facility for testing. Year two: refine product, file patents, begin direct-to-consumer sales in one region. Year three: expand regionally, pursue insurance partnerships. By year five, insurance companies subsidize the devices because they reduce emergency room visits. By year ten, the company is standard equipment in homes across the country."She looked at the judges."The risk is regulation. Healthcare is heavily controlled. But the reward is a company that solves a real problem—and problems that don't go away make companies that don't

"The boys' team."---The boys' side stayed calm this time. Lucas pumped his fist silently. Wei nodded once. Peng exhaled. Lawrence met Sophia's eyes across the stage. She didn't look away.On the girls' side, Mei Ling's hands were shaking. Not with fear. With frustration.Sophia touched her arm. "One round left. We can still win this."Mei Ling nodded slowly. But her jaw was tight.---Professor Zhang raised his hand. "Final round will begin after a fifteen-minute break. The topic will be revealed then."The hall erupted in conversation.Isabella stood, stretching. Ralph was already running toward the stage to congratulate his friends. In his office, Albert leaned back in his chair. Two rounds. Both won by the boys. But the girls aren't done yet.The final round will decide everything. The fifteen-minute break felt like fifteen seconds.Students flooded the aisles, grabbing snacks, arguing about the debates, placing ridiculous bets. Ralph somehow acquired a bag of chips and was alrea

He walked to center stage slowly. Not nervous. Just... deliberate. When he reached the podium, he didn't touch his notes. He turned to face the audience directly."Fang just made the most intelligent argument of this round."A few people blinked. That wasn't how these things usually started."She's right. It's a loop. A trap. And arguing about which part matters most can become a distraction." He paused. "But here's the thing about traps."He looked at the girls' side."They're not magic. They're built by someone. Maintained by someone. Someone benefits from the trap continuing."Silence."Citizens don't build corrupt systems. Corrupt leaders do. Citizens don't design oppressive institutions. Leaders do. Citizens don't create laws that protect the powerful at the expense of everyone else. Leaders do."He let that land."Yes, citizens have to show up. Yes, systems have to function. But before any of that happens, someone has to decide whether the loop continues or ends. And that someon

Audience...Ralph was on his feet before he realized it. "THAT'S MY BOY! THAT'S MY FRIEND! LUCAS! LAWRENCE! WOOOO!"Someone behind him couldn't help but yell, "Sit down, bro!"They were watching the same matches alright? No need to shout like it's some football game.Ralph immediately sat. But he kept clapping... Loudly. Obnoxiously. Proudly.Meanwhile, Isabella watched Lawrence. He wasn't celebrating or celebrating his win, it was as if it was just another casual stroll for him which made her blush for unknown reason. That's the real competitor, she thought. The ones who don't stop to enjoy the win.Nearby, a group of boys were already arguing about whether the judges got it right. A girl shouted back at them. The hall buzzed with post-debate energy.---Albert's Office...The screen flickered with the live feed.Albert hadn't moved during the announcement. His expression remained exactly the same—calm, observing, unreadable. But when the camera panned across the boys' team and ling

Jia stood for the girls. "My opponent's Scandinavian argument is a classic misuse of data. Those countries have strong social safety nets that allow people to follow preferences—but those preferences are still shaped by generations of cultural messaging. You can't separate 'free choice' from 'what society taught you to want.' True equality means examining why those gaps exist, not just accepting them as natural."Lucas stood for the boys, visibly nervous but pushing through. "Okay, but—but if we keep moving the goalposts, when do we declare victory? If it's never enough, then 'achievable' becomes a religious statement, not a practical one."Fang stood, quiet but precise. "Victory isn't a finish line. It's a direction. The question isn't 'have we arrived.' It's 'are we moving forward.' And we are. That's why it's achievable."Peng stood. "Moving forward indefinitely assumes infinite progress. Resources are finite. Attention is finite. Political will is finite. At some point, diminishin
Chapter 249: Round One
The hall fell silent as the judge broke the seal on the first envelope.Professor Zhang himself stepped forward to read it. His voice carried through the speakers, calm and weighty."Round One. Debate format. Affirmative side: the girls' team. Negative side: the boys' team."He paused, letting the weight settle."The motion is as follows: 'Is true gender equality realistically achievable in modern society, or will inherent differences always create different outcomes?'"Murmurs rippled through the audience. This wasn't a simple topic. This was the kind of question that could go anywhere."Each team has ten minutes to prepare. No outside resources. No phones. Just your minds."The countdown clock appeared on the projector screen.10:00.---Nine Minutes RemainingOn the girls' side, Sophia leaned toward Mei Ling immediately. "We need structure. Opening statement, three core arguments, rebuttal points."Mei Ling nodded, already scribbling on her notepad. "I'll handle statistical framing
