Chapter 4: Encounter with a Middle School Classmate

As Lawrence’s class teacher, Jasmine knew his family background and his relationship with Lucy. She had always looked after him. After learning what had happened that night, she grew worried and called.

“Um…”

Hearing her voice, Lawrence understood why Jasmine was calling, but for a moment he didn’t know what to say.

“Lawrence, listen to me,” Jasmine said gently. “You can always find another job if you lose one, or another girlfriend if one leaves. Don’t do anything foolish. You’re still young, with a bright future. Stay home tonight. Rest well. Tomorrow will be better.”

Her words were warm which made Lawrence feel unexpectedly moved.

“Don’t worry, Teacher Jasmine. I really am fine,” he said softly.

How could he not be fine? He had just learned he was heir to the world’s most powerful family and had ten million dollars as pocket money. Life couldn’t look brighter.

“That’s good. Then I won’t disturb you. Sleep early,” Jasmine replied.

“Okay. Good night, Miss Jasmine.”

“Good night.”

They hung up. Lawrence set the phone aside, lay on his bed, and drifted into sleep staring at the ceiling.

The next morning, his phone rang again. Groggy and unrested, he picked it up to see his roommate, Ralph Hugo.

“Ralph? Why so early?” Lawrence muttered with a yawn.

“Didn’t you check the group chat yesterday? Today’s Ms. Jasmine’s birthday. Everyone’s already here for the celebration. Only you, Lucy, and Michael aren’t here yet,” Ralp’s voice said, sounding puzzled.

Lawrence smacked his forehead. How could he have forgotten Jasmine’s birthday?

She had graduated only recently with her master’s and was close in age to her students, which made her more like a friend than a teacher. She treated Lawrence even better than most, always keeping an eye on him because of his situation. Whenever the school had benefits to hand out, she thought of him first. She had gone to his part-time jobs in person to make sure he wasn’t being cheated. Sometimes, she even worried about his nutrition and cooked extra meals for him. If not for the difference in gender, she might have invited him to live with her so she could take proper care of him.

To Lawrence, Jasmine wasn’t just a teacher—she was more like family, an older sister who gave him the warmth of home.

But after the whirlwind of betrayal, heartbreak, and sudden wealth the night before, he had completely forgotten the occasion, let alone checked group messages.

Since it was Jasmine’s birthday, he decided he should buy her a proper gift. He had money now, after all.

“Ralph, help me ask for leave in class. Say I’ve got something important, don't worry I will buy you a cupcake as a form of payment,” Lawrence said, and hung up before Ralph could reply.

After a quick wash, he headed straight to Cesar Mall.

Half an hour later, he stepped out of the taxi, staring up at the glittering complex with awe. He had never dreamed he would be shopping there.

Cesar Mall was the largest in Light City, a hub for the world’s top luxury brands. Only the city’s wealthiest frequented it. If he was buying a gift for Jasmine, he couldn’t pick anything shabby. This was the place.

Inside, as he considered what to buy, Lucy’s betrayal resurfaced in his mind—she had left him for a handbag. So, a handbag it would be. Women never seemed able to resist them, especially luxury ones.

Decision made, he walked straight to Dior brand side.

The boutique was bright, lavish, and filled with the hum of wealthy shoppers.

“Hello, sir. How may I help you?” a salesperson greeted warmly at first, but her smile faltered when she noticed Lawrence’s simple, street-market clothes. Though still polite outwardly, her eyes gave her away as it was filled with disdain.

'Another broke kid,' she thought. 'Here to look, not to buy. What a waste of time.'

Dior attracted plenty of gawkers who came just to admire what they couldn’t afford, and in her mind, Lawrence was no different.

Lawrence ignored her look. He was used to it. Calmly, he said, “I want to see the bags. Could you recommend something?”

It was his first time in Dior. Faced with rows of items, he didn’t know how to choose.

The salesperson’s expression soured when she heard his words. With a roll of her eyes, she pointed lazily toward the display. “They’re all there. Look for yourself. Just don’t touch anything. If you break it, you won’t be able to pay for it.”

"What the hell do you mean I should look by myself? Is that how you treat customers?" Lawrence’s brow furrowed, as he respond to her. Feeling slightly pissed.

"What do you...," the woman’s demeanor suddenly flipped completely as she halt her words and hurriedly past him toward the entrance, her face full of flattery.

“Mr. Dylan, welcome! What will you be buying today? And is this your girlfriend? She’s gorgeous!”

Lawrence turned, catching sight of a tall mature man walking in with an attractive woman on his arm. She clung to him tightly, pressing her chest against him as they entered.

Dylan Walker smiled, feeling please at Mary's flattering. “Mary, this is my girlfriend, Karen Cooper. We were passing by, so I thought I’d bring her in to pick a bag, you know it's been long I come for shopping.”

"Indeed, once in a while. Shopping helps calm the mind." Mary respond back with a light formal smile on her face. To her this is a big fish, as the commission from him will definitely be awesome.

Lawrence’s eyes narrowed as he looked at the woman who looked familiar. After a moment, he remembered.

“You’re Karen, from Higher High School?” he asked.

Karen turned toward him, surprised at someone recognising her. Her expression flickered with recognition before settling into colder one.

“Lawrence? Why are you here?” she exclaimed, not with joy at meeting an old classmate, but with disdain.

  • Chapter 101: Is This Electricity Energy?

With a grunt of effort, Lawrence subconsciously willed the electrical current within him to surge. He felt a jolt, not painful but intensely stimulating, as the energy raced through his nervous system. His tendons seemed to tighten and his bones hummed with a sudden, sharp influx of power. His strength and agility spiked dramatically. In three explosive strides, fueled by this bio-electric boost, he closed the distance with the fleeing monster. The creature was not an idiot. Seeing the club whistling towards its head, it threw itself into a desperate, scrambling dodge. The evasion saved it from the immediate blow, but it completely destroyed its momentum to run, costing it its last chance to escape.Using the creature's stumble, Lawrence took a huge, bounding stride. He dropped the club and in one fluid motion, drew the pale blue knife from his waist. Capitalizing on the monster's off-balance state, he drove the blade into its back with every ounce of his enhanced strength. The incred

  • Chapter 100: Fighting Monsters

A cold knot of fear tightened in Lawrence’s stomach as he watched the neighboring courtyard gate swing wide open. The pack of fish-headed monsters relentlessly swung their clubs, beating the lifeless form on the ground with a rhythmic, sickening finality. He had never seen the man before, but the man’s earlier, slurred words made it clear he was another displaced soul from Lawrence’s world. And he was the complete opposite of Lawrence. Where Lawrence had been hyper-vigilant from his first moment here, this man had been recklessly oblivious, a fact that baffled Lawrence. When he woke up, didn't he see the extreme decay? Didn't he feel the wrongness in the air? Lawrence wondered. The only explanation was that the man was still severely intoxicated, mistaking this nightmare for a drunken hallucination or a bad dream. It was a fatal error. The monsters’ clubs, though less than half a meter long, had round, heavy heads that inflicted devastating damage. Under the relentless pounding from

The moment consciousness returned, a dull, throbbing ache pulsed behind his eyes. However, his muddled brain snapped into instant, chilling clarity the second he saw the ruined, water-stained ceiling above him.He sat bolt upright, his eyes frantically scanning his surroundings."Shit! I'm back in the Alternate World!"The curse escaped his lips in a horrified whisper, and he felt a desperate, sinking feeling that was dangerously close to tears. The light filtering through the broken window was a sickly, dusky gray. The floor and the lone table were thick with undisturbed dust. The Michael Jackson poster was now a faded, yellowed relic, the iconic face twisted into a ghastly semblance by decay. Countless spider webs hung like ragged veils from the walls and corners. The forgotten fruit on the table was a fuzzy, multicolored mound of mold, and the ones beneath had liquefied into a pool of black, putrid sludge. The alumi

The limousine seemed to shrink around Lawrence, the luxurious interior feeling more like a confessional booth where world-shattering secrets were being exchanged. Albert’s words hung in the air, dense and unbelievable. You are not the only one.“What do you mean?” Lawrence finally managed to whisper, his voice hoarse. “There are others?”Albert’s calm demeanor had returned, but it was now layered with a grave seriousness. “As of my last intelligence briefing, there have been over eight hundred documented cases within Freedom Country alone. Individuals who, like you, simply vanish from their beds. Some reappear minutes, hours, or days later. Some are found dead, their bodies… ravaged by things we cannot explain. And a small, distinct subset return alive, fundamentally changed.”Lawrence’s mind reeled, trying to process the scale. “Eight hundred? How… how is this not the only thing on the news? This would be a global panic!”A faint, weary smile touched Albert’s lips. “The government, y

Vivian didn't insist on the money, gracefully accepting his refusal. "Okay then. But since you were instrumental in me winning such a staggering amount, the least I can do is treat you to a meal another day. You won't refuse me that, will you?"She gave him a charming, persuasive smile. "Give me your phone number, and I will contact you when the time comes."Vivian had already been this persistent, and Lawrence felt it would be churlish to refuse a simple meal. He reluctantly recited his number for her.Ahem...Suddenly, a light, deliberate cough cut through the night air, immediately catching Lawrence's attention. When he turned to see who it was, a stiff, guilty smile slowly spread across his face. He looked like a child who had sworn to his parents he wouldn't go to the forbidden quarry, only to be caught red-handed with muddy shoes."Ah, Sir Albert! You... frequent this place...? Hehehe, that's a surprise," Lawrence said with a nervous laugh, looking at the impeccably dressed man
